Do you see them? All of the? There are 5...FIVE artichokes on this plant. Yes, the plant we’ve already taken 4 from. I started it from seed last year, but I don’t recall it producing and I wasn’t confident it would overwinter, but overwinter it did. I’ve never had an artichoke plant produce so much. So... two questions: 1) does this mean we are in for a hard winter? Yes or No 2) how do you eat your artichoke? Are you ready for this? It’s going to send shivers down every gardeners spine. We’ve had our first frost. I know, it’s only August. I know. The other morning we noticed it was 36° at 7am. I had the briefest of “OH NO FROST!” thoughts, but reasoned with myself that it’s not even the middle of August, so for sure it hadn’t dipped down much lower. Boy, was I wrong! We went out to water and notice our squash plants have been damaged by frost. Even some of our bean plants have been touched. We’re not even to the middle of August yet!!! Oh, and by Sunday, our daytime temps are supposed to be nearing 100°. I give up! Darn microclimates! #squash #frostonthepumpkin #from30to100 #fromseedtotable #microclimate #growyourown #martitimegarden #pnwgardener #pnwhomestead #letsgarden #pnwlife #growyourownfood #igiveup #growingfromseed #shareexploreinspire https://www.instagram.com/p/CD4x_iegn0J/?igshid=1rrrt43p5n93g

What do hula hoops and brassicas have to do with one another? We buy $1 hula hoops from the @dollartree, cut them, insert dowels into each end and place them in the garden to create small caterpillar tunnels to protect our brassicas from cabbage moths and later frosts. The cover we use is a spun fabric that allows for watering and air flow but provides protection from insects and frost. #catepilartunnel #hoophouse #protection #reemay #fallgarden #brassica #cabbage #colecrop #fromseedtotable #growyourown #martitimegarden #pnwgardener #pnwhomestead #letsgarden #pnwlife #growyourownfood #gardengoals #growingfromseed #shareexploreinspire #ruinedmanicure https://www.instagram.com/p/CD4wLmLAoA8/?igshid=1389l7i2e43wm

We had a bumper crop of strawberries this year. Now that they are done producing fruit, they have begun to set runners. They produce “runners” or “stolons” as a way of propagating themselves. At the end of last season, I didn’t do you anything with the bed they were in, so they ended up taking over half of it, which turned out to be a good thing. In fact, I’m going to let them take over the rest of the bed in anticipation of an even larger crop next year. Each plant sends out multiple runners, so I’m going to see if I can get some runners to establish themselves in pots do I can share them with a friend. #strawberry #strawberries #clone #stolon #runner #fromseedtotable #growyourown #pnwgarden #pnw #garden #homestead #pnwhomestead #letsgarden #howdoesyourgardengrow #pnwlife #getgrowing #growyourown #growyourownfood #gardengoals #gardening #seeds #growingfromseed #playinginthedirt #alittledirtdonthurt #shareexploreinspire https://www.instagram.com/p/CC1JuP4g0Tx/?igshid=1rc9gjbb171rz

Our first artichoke harvest! As much as we love them, we rarely buy them at the market. They are just too pricey. I started our plants, by seed, LAST year and though we did get a couple of artichokes, they never grew to a harvestable size. Living in the Pacific Northwest, in growing zone 7B, the ability to overwinter artichokes is fairly slim. We decided to plant them (there were two) on the backside of the greenhouse, facing south to get the most sun possible, and closest to the greenhouse heater that gets turned on in January when we begin starting our seeds. Of the two we planted, only one survived...and it’s thriving!! There are two more artichokes on it AND now that we’ve harvest our first ones, I read there is a chance the plant might put off a couple more! Oh the joy! To garden really is an exercise of hope and faith. I plan on starting a few more plants and will try to overwinter them either in the greenhouse or close to it for a greater harvest next year. Do you like artichokes? What is your favorite way to eat them? #artichoke #fromseedtotable #growyourown #pnwgarden #pnw #garden #homestead #pnwhomestead #letsgarden #howdoesyourgardengrow #pnwlife #getgrowing #growyourown #growyourownfood #gardengoals #gardening #seeds #growingfromseed #playinginthedirt #alittledirtdonthurt #shareexploreinspire #mayo #hope #faith https://www.instagram.com/p/CC1FXyug7Wc/?igshid=1hoqhyxftqqx

Have you filled out our seedling interest form? Are you wondering when they might be ready? We’ve had a few set backs this season: A bad batch of seeds, a critter eating seeds we planted, and I even managed to kill off a whole tray of brassicas by not watching the weather. Since we typically don’t start planting our gardens until well after Mother’s Day (at least in our neck of the woods), I’m not too worried. However, this does mean that we will have limits quantities available. Our first plant sale is tentatively scheduled for, Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17. This is subject to change. We will post what we have available and the prices a few days before. If you are planning on buying plants from us, we encourage you to bring a box or container to keep your plants safe on the way home. To keep everyone safe, we are encouraging everyone to practice appropriate social distancing. We will be excepting CASH ONLY this year, so please make sure to bring exact change. Thank you so much for your support. If you have any questions please send us a message. #buylocal #shopsmallbusiness #supportlocal #pnwgardening #pnwhomestead #swwashington #springhassprung #spring2020 https://www.instagram.com/p/B_6Q2aBAM9P/?igshid=1s15ra5xosyce

After getting a lot of requests for it last year, we are going to attempt to get some of our bees to produce cut comb honey... sort of. . First, for those of you who don’t know, cut comb honey is produced by cutting the honeycomb (the hexagonal-shaped cells the bees form with beeswax and store their raw honey and pollen in) free from its frame and dividing the comb into smaller, usually square pieces which are then packaged for consumption. . Wait?! That means people are eating BEESWAX with their honey - ewww!! That can’t be legal, ethical or healthy!!! . Actually, not only is it totally safe (in moderation) but people have been doing it for thousands... THOUSANDS of years! The wax gives the honey a different texture, more body and not to worry, it is nothing like biting into a candle! . This year, we’ve purchased the “Hogg Halfcomb honeycomb kit”. This kit allows the bees to make “halfcomb” rather than full, two-sided honeycomb, in individual containers, meaning it’s not quite so messy for us. . We hope to have some amazing honey products to share with you soon! #Honeybees #Honey #HogGHalfComb #CutComeHoney #AlwaysLearning #PacificNorthwest #PNWBeekeeper #PNWHomesteader #WashingtonHomesteader #ApiaryLifeForMe

Sea of Turquoise, yellows and red - looks like we’ve agreed on the color scheme for the canning kitchen. Do you think it’s “vintage” enough? Now we have to decide on painted floors, epoxy or something else’s. I’m leaning toward epoxy for the cleanability. #canningkitchen #vintage #foodpreservation #foodinjars #canninglife #mistymeadows #homesteadlife #pnwhomesteader

Few days ago we cooked up some flank steak that had been taking up room in the freezer. Some of it was made into a delicious fajita dinner and the rest went into the freeze dryer. It took about 36 hours to freeze dry; part of that was because we were also freeze drying chicken fettuccine alfredo (see the last pic) but after it was dry, we packed it into small jars and will be using it in breakfast potatoes, soups and other dishes that need just a little bit of protein. We love our harvest right freeze dryer. It gives us the ability of really, really long term food storage. When you preserve food by canning, it’s good for 2 to 5 years. When you preserve food by freeze drying, it can last up to 25 years! AND Freeze drying maintains 97% of the nutrients - you can’t say the same with canning. It really gives us a sense of security knowing that should something happen: crop failure, financial and government collapse, zombie apocalypse… we will still be able to feed our family, and maybe even help some of those around us. Not to mention the ability both canning and freeze drying gives us to put together a very quick meal on days we are just absolutely exhausted. I know you’ve had those kind of days too. #FoodPreservation #Canning #Freezedrying #PNW #PNWHomesteader #WashingtonStateHomesteadee #MountRainier #CanningVsFreezedrying #ZombieApocalypse @harvest_right @ballcanning

Daisy...and all of us here @mistymeadowshomestead are sure tired of this rain. We take the dogs out to go potty and they stop at the edge of the porch and look back at us like we are CRAZY, cuz they are going to hold it, thank you very much, except Daisy is still a puppy and ... I’m tired of the rain and wiping up puddles of pee. 😑 #RainWillMakeOurGardenHappy #RainMakesThingsGrow #RainRainGoAway #INeedSomeSunshine #MyJointsTellMeIt’sGoingToRainAgainTomorrow #MountRainier #PNW #PNWGardener #PNWHomesteader #WashingtonStateHomesteader #HomesteadersOfIG #PetsMakeLifeBetter
