Another gouache landscape with just a bit of underpainting showing through, this time @winsorandnewton Gamboge, a lovely yellow-orange color very similar to the Indian Yellow that I would use for oil paintings. One last painting from the gouache workshop I took with @terrymiura. He really deserves all the credit on this one, because he sat down and fixed that big rock outcropping on the left for me. I was trying to treat it as one shape but also give it some variety and texture, but it ended up being a mess of choppy brushstrokes. He sat down and unified the whole thing, basically by dry-brushing over it with sort of a mid-range value. These are always the trickiest areas—those big expanses of rock or grass or pavement that need to look like something without being excessively detailed. So good to get back into gouache. Did I overdo it with the hot pink? That was the underpainting for the land, and honestly it looked so fabulous I hardly wanted to cover it up at all. How do we feel about flashy underpaintings in landscapes? I used to always do oil paintings on black gesso, with a screaming cadmium red underpainting, and I loved the drama when that showed through. But is it too much? Anyway, this is a view from above Little Creek Cove on the beautiful Oregon coast.
