With the Pogona, like the Iguana, I see a clear example of the links that these reptile species can have with humans. In my opinion, Pogonas are also pets and very docile and intelligent. Currently there are quite a few colors besides the Red (the one in the photo) such as Nominal, Gold, Citrus, Red, Blood Red, Redgold, Sunburst, Sandfire, Blue, Snow, Zero, Witblits, Albine, Wero, Paradox, etc. .. These phases are created by genetic selection only in captivity 🦎🧡

Bearded Dragons aren't Beginner Lizards

It is WILD to me that people claim Bearded Dragons make great first reptiles and/or are super easy. While they are hardy they're definitely a more intermediate species imo. First they get BIG which means they need a big enclosure. 4x2x2' is regarded as the bare minimum for bearded dragons with 5x3x3' enclosures being pushed as the new recommended minimum. In addition to being large they're also active! They get 18"+ as adults which is big. With a 4x2x2' and even 5x3x3' enclosure they need regular outside enclosure time as even a 5x3x3 is fairly small and doesn't really allow for zoomies. Their big size also means their bites can do some serious damage. And we're recommending them as pets to young children?? Who don't have proper animal ettiquette? And beginner reptile keepers who are bound to mess up when handling them and stress them potentially to the point of biting? As adults they need to be fed daily which is rare in reptiles. And a decent chunk of work if you're making all their salads fresh. They also need extremely high basking temps of 105F+ which can be difficult to achieve depending on the bulb. They also require a high % UVB. They're a good chunk more work than most other lizards being recommended for newer keepers, able to cause significantly more harm and need a very large enclosure compared to other recommended lizards for beginners. To be clear I'm not saying NO ONE should keep bearded dragons or that they're an advanced species. I'm not even saying no one should get a bearded dragon as their first lizard. All I'm saying is people need to stop pushing them as excellent lizards for beginners because they're really not.

And yes, she was monitored just in case her hubris got the better of her ( and I needed to tug on the dandelion a bit to break it in half ). I like to give her bigger chunks to help clean her teeth and offer some mental stimulation. Be careful, though! Always monitor your beardie when offering larger chunks of food! And if you forage dandelions, make sure the area you get them from isn’t treated with chemicals!

I just got my first beardie 11 days ago. His name is Maverick based on the Top Gun movies. He's so cute so I'm making an entire post for everyone to appriteate him

Three weeks ago after his six month recheck on bloods and ultrasound found a very slight improvement in Hannibal’s liver condition but unfortunately found kidney disease. Another consequence of his adenovirus. Three weeks on a medicine help the Uric acid levels and he had a repeat blood test today. His levels are below what they have been before and is now normal “or below normal levels they mostly see” as the vet said today. But as the levels can be normal at 0. He gets to come off that medication for now. He hated it so much. As long as he looks and acts well he’ll have another recheck in 3-6 months so fingers crossed. For now it is really good news. Pogonas are very popular as pets due to their docility and beauty, but very few people know that if we tried to handle one of these lizards in the wild, we would be surprised because they are capable of displaying spikes all over their bodies, similar to those of the cacti and they wouldn't hesitate to nail them to us. If we ever visit the deserts of Australia and come across one, I would think twice before touching them! 🦎🧡
