"I try not to speak of my time at the Cog under the care of the Functionist Council much. It is over and done with, and I have survived it. But in my reluctance to speak... I am concerned that I sometimes give off the wrong impression, or that I minimize myself and my experiences.

I will be blunt, here.

I am afraid of dogs because I am afraid of Four of Twelve.

The Moderator-- this was Four's title-- kept a trio of hunting dogs, which he spoiled handsomely and trained for absolute obedience. Their names were Ariel, Dion, and Nitro Zeus, each larger and more vicious than the last. Ariel was an Iaconian Spirz, Dion an Altihexan Pointguard, and Nitro was-- honestly, I do not think Nitro had an official make and model. He was a custom piece, designed to Four's exacting specifications, and powered by one of the photonic shards pried out of me during the early days of the Cold Construction project. He was huge, and fast, and brutal.

There were other mechanimals. Mecha who took the shape of beasts, as well, who either worked for Four or were made to bend the knee. But the dogs were his favorites.

I always knew when Four was coming to see me because I would hear the dogs, first.

And when I ran-- before I learned not to run--

It was trivial, really, to him, to set the dogs on me. A click, a whistle, whatever. It became a game, a diversion, to set me loose in the halls and-- and see how long I could hold out. The others would only intervene if it caused them inconvenience.

Even when I learned to heel at the tap of his cane... Always, the threat hung overhead.

The memory of teeth. Of pain.

So, I do not hate dogs. I am sad for what has been made of them, and of me. I am little more than a bitch myself, after all."
