Dream Of The Private Eye Series, cyanotype on graph paper. • Cyanotype (sa-YAN-no-type) is a photographic printing process invented in 1842 by Sir John Herschel—three years after the birth of photography. Its telltale characteristic is the heavenly blue color—a result of a chemical reaction when cyanotype is exposed to ultraviolet light. The process involves brushing the photo-sensitive emulsion onto paper (or surface of choice) and letting it dry in a dark place. The emulsion is a mixture of two chemicals, ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide, dissolved in distilled water. One year ago this month (just before life came to a screaming halt) I started taking large format film photographs of the teachers and administrators at the South Shore Art Center. A personal project and also a way for me to bring attention to the center where I am on the board of directors, teach a little bit and am trying to develop a film and darkroom program. The SSAC took a major hit in 2020, and the darkroom program is on the back-burner, but the center is hanging in there and slowly opening back up. (virtual and safe in-person studio classes) .
