Christopher Hitchens(13 April 1949-15 December 2011). I had the pleasure of photographing him on 5 or 6 occasions. All for Vanity Fair. Controversial and extraordinarily charming, Christopher was a prolific British-American author, political journalist and literary critic. ‘Hitch’ is recognized as a public intellectual and was a staple of talk shows and the lecture circuits. He was a columnist and literary critic for media outlets such as Vanity Fair, The Atlantic and The Nation among others. It’s been 10 years since his death. He died of esophageal cancer at 62. “In whatever kind of ‘race’ life may be, I have very abruptly become a finalist”, Christopher wrote in Vanity Fair. I was honored to have some of my portraits grace the covers of two books he wrote: The Trial of Henry Kissinger (2001) and Letters to a Young Contrarian (2001). The attached image is from our first session in Washington DC in 2001. Hard to believe this photo is almost 20 years old. I shot it while I was in school at @drexelphotography and had just discovered my love for the view camera. I definitely get nostalgic for this camera but who has time to be nostalgic. NERD ALERT: This image was made with my own 4x5 kit that I found in a classified ad in the newspapers that included... Cambo/calumet 4x5 camera, Caltar 65mm, 90mm, and 210mm. In celebration of St. Patrick’s Day I thought to bring forth the Irish-American writer and educator FRANK MCCOURT (1930-2009)from my archive. Raised mostly in Limerick, Ireland in dire conditions during and after the Great Depression, he saved up enough money to board a boat to New York City. He eventually became an English teacher at 4 or 5 different Manhattan and Brooklyn high schools, most notably at Stuyvesant High School in lower Manhattan. I was commissioned to take his portrait by Newsweek in 1997, the year he won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography for his memoir Angela’s Ashes. He wrote the book just after he retired from teaching high school and it brought him unexpected critical and financial success. Throwback Portrait of Michael Eric Dyson at his home. Photographed on a 4 by 5 Crown Graphic from 1947 on Polaroid Type 55. Beautiful tones, wish they’d bring it back. And wish I had brought an assistant to develop the negatives😅.. After each photo you had to peel apart the print and negative parts of the Polaroid and give the negative a Sodium-Sulfite bath. It’s as fun as it sounds.
