Bird of the Week: The African Harrier-Hawk! 🪶
The African Harrier-Hawk (Polyboroides typus) is a raptor that can be found in rainforest areas of western Africa. They are opportunists by nature, and will feed on insects, small mammals, other birds’ eggs, and small reptiles.
A unique feature of the African Harrier-Hawk is its flexibility as a hunter. They can be observed clinging and hanging from branches, cliffs and nests, allowing themselves to reach hard to access prey and raid nests.
African Harrier-Hawks are members of the genus Polyboroides, harrier-hawks. There is one other known species in this genus: the Madagascar Harrier-Hawk.

IT HAPPENED AGAIN!! Just as I was making coffee...the local African Harrier Hawk / Gymnogene was circling over the garden! 🦅 Parden the zoomed/blurry shot, poor chap was getting mobbed by Pied Crows, Hadeda Ibises, Fork-tailed Drongos, & Red-winged Starlings...until it rode the thermals higher up & over, out of sight. #africanharrierhawk #gymnogene #hawk #raptor #birdsofprey #birds #birding #nevernotbirding #birdingfromhome #birdtherapy #Polyboroides #accipiter #inflight #birdwatching #birds #birdsofsouthafrica #birdphotography #wildlifephotography #naturephotography (at Plettenberg Bay, Western Cape) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBv0u9cAHne/?igshid=1bnu3fbn38r2r

Flew over my house about half an hour ago. Grabbed my camera and ran out, got a few shots before it went out of sight.

African Harrier Hawk (Polyboroides typus)
The African harrier hawk is one of only two birds of prey that has double-jointed knees. It uses these joints to hunt animals in cracks and holes in cliffsides and trees. One of its favored foods is the sociable weaver (Geranospiza caerulescen), which creates massive nests with other members of its species. Nom nom nom.
