I got a free mystery plant from the nursery and it’s the ponytail palm! I got 7 plants out of one pot 👍🏾 It’s actually not a palm, it’s a succulent from Mexico.

Ponytail Palm (Beaucarnea recurvata) is native to the state of Veracruz Mexico but is also a popular ornamental plant, Despite the name, it is not a palm but is in the same family as Agaves and Yuccas. I have one that I got as a seedling that is now about 10 inches tall. I'm not sure how large the one at the greenhouse is but it's well over my head - probably about 10 feet tall. This is a closeup of the expanded caudex which is a distinguishing feature of this plant.

For weeks, I would walk past this little buggar in the grocery store. I wanted it sooooo bad.. but I was broke. It sucks having to adult. But my patience paid off! She is miiiiine!

They were already in the box an extra day because of bank holiday Monday, so I didn’t want them cooped up any longer (and it’s way harder to go pick up a parcel from a depot when you don’t drive!). I love them!! I think this is going to be my last #plantmail for a while as I’m about to quit my job to follow my dreams and need to tighten the heck out of the ££ belt, but it’s a good ‘un! The #watermelonpeperomia got a little smooshed at the bottom underneath the terracotta pots (eek - maybe not the best packing strategy!), and the #fishbonecactus is riding the struggle bus a little bit, but overall, I’m very happy! For the price and speed of shipping, I’m a happy plant lady. Look at the growth structure of this ponytail palm (Beaucarnea recurvata): the stem has been growing uncut for many years so there is just a single growth point (📷 2). Compare this to the usual way of cultivating a ponytail palm - a thick trunk that had been cut, which gives rise to multiple growth points at the stump and thinner leaves.
