Lan Qiren had spent his wild youth drinking tea designed to forestall fertility every day with the sort of rigid obedience usually associated with the Lan sect rules, but that didn’t mean he didn’t sometimes…worry.

“But really,” Nie Mingjue said, chin on his hand and shit-eating grin on his face. “How many of the current generation’s parents were you fucking around the time they were conceived?”

“Please stop asking about that,” Lan Qiren said dispiritedly. He didn’t expect the request to be successful: Nie Mingjue, being the child of the one person that Lan Qiren – and everyone else in the cultivation world other than his father, for that matter – had never met, was the only one who could ask these sorts of questions without any concern whatsoever, and therefore, naturally, he did.

“But really. I mean, I know Huaisang’s not yours, he’s too much like Father, but I know you were sleeping with my father and Second Mother around the right time –”

Nie Mingjue had walked in on them one time. It’d been awful.

(Mostly because Lao Nie had reacted by saying, “Qiren, you’re a teacher, you explain what threesomes are!” and then running away without even bothering to put on his clothing, while the second Madame Nie had somehow managed to vanish by the time Lan Qiren had turned around; he hadn’t even seen her leave, though he’d almost gotten a sense of the grin she must have had before she’d disappeared somehow still lingering behind.)

“– and of course everyone knows about Cangse Sanren and you. She was your longest running lover, wasn’t she?”

“She used to be, but then she died,” Lan Qiren said. “It’s probably Sect Leader Wen these days.”

“Of course it is.”

“…I really don’t mind stopping. I mean, if it’s awkward for you.”

“No, no, it’s fine.”

“I mean, he murdered your father. He’s planning to take over the world. I probably should stop.”

“No need, no need! I’ve already sworn a blood feud over the murder, you’re opposing the conquest, to my mind that covers all the relevant bits. Anyway, you know my father. He’s probably in favor of you continuing sexing up Wen Ruohan, murder or no murder.”

That did seem rather like something Lao Nie would do.

Lan Qiren wasn’t sure of anything. He pinched his brow and regretted, regretted, regretted. The wedding night wine served in the Nightless City had been delicious, but it wasn’t worth this conversation. “We have nothing in common.”

Nie Mingjue cackled.

“All right, then,” he said enthusiastically. “If we’re using that standard: which of your students do you see something of yourself in…?”

This post got me thinking about how no one has an happy ending. wwx's unresolved past relationships and traumas are already stated. But nhs too, after 13 years of plotting, how does he feel? He has lost both jgy and lxc and is, imo, still haunted by his brother' memory. Poor jl has a lot to deal with! Not to mention his unstable position at Lanling, he now is trying to forgive people who have hurt him. And he is 13 years old. Lxc is in seclusion. jc has now to rearrange his life again, after heartbreaking truths were revealed (in the worst way,for his already present issues). Lsz! What do you do with him? His mother sect was destroyed also by the sect where he grew up. He is a Lan, but he is also a Wen. wn! He is traveling with his beloved lost nephew! He was dead (kinda) for 13 years, how do you deal with being still alive (kinda), while your beloved sister isn't anymore?? jgy and nmj are imprisoned in the coffin together.

Chapter 2! As before, there’s nothing here that’s new to anyone who’s kept up with the story during WIP Wednesdays, but I hope y’all enjoy it all the same ♥

[Ch. 1]

Something fragile and hopeful flutters in Jingyi’s chest to be addressed by name, to be asked to return instead of told to go, for once. He chances a glance up at Lan-xiansheng to make sure it’s alright; the Grandmaster is just watching him with a thoughtful expression, so Jingyi steps around him again to approach where Hanguang-Jun is sitting in the grass. As he nears, he sees that the lump in his lap isn’t a wrinkle in his snow-white robes, but is instead one of the rabbits, curled up and munching on a piece of lettuce.

“Gently,” Hanguang-Jun cautions. His voice still hasn’t changed, nor has the expression on his face, but it’s not quite so scary this time now that he’s sitting down. Jingyi watches him pet the rabbit’s back a few times before he withdraws his hand and gestures as if to ask him to try. He glances again at Lan-xiansheng, waiting for him to say that this is also inappropriate, but…but Hanguang-Jun is doing it, so it can’t be all that bad. Jingyi sets his buckets down again to walk as carefully as he can to where he can kneel in front of Hanguang-Jun and his rabbit.

Jingyi stretches out one hand and doesn’t even dare to breathe as he gently pats the bunny’s rounded little back a few times, just enough to feel its soft fur tickling his fingers.

“Good,” Hanguang-Jun praises. Jingyi feels like he can take on the world. ‘Good’. Someone told him he was good! And not just any ‘someone’, but Hanguang-Jun!!

Jingyi can’t keep the smile off his face as he tries the same petting motion Hanguang-Jun had used only to discover - “It’s so soft!” It comes out breathless and full of wonder; he’s never felt something so soft in all his life, and it’s warm and small and alive and he loves it.

“Mn.”

“Wangji,” Lan-xiansheng says with a gruff cough just as Jingyi settles in a little more firmly, eager to continue petting his new favorite creature in the entire world. “Jingyi must return to his task.”

Right. His punishment. Jingyi’s smile fades and he pulls his hand back with palpable reluctance.

“What is the punishment?” Hanguang-Jun asks, still cold and cool only it’s beginning to feel almost soothing rather than threatening. It’s nice to hear someone speak without judgment, without irritation, without sounding like they wish he’d just disappear already.

“Carrying water,” Jingyi replies. He ducks his head, too ashamed of himself now to even think about meeting Hanguang-Jun’s eyes. “I disrupted class.”

“How?”

Jingyi shuffles his knees a bit and peeks a sideways glance up at Lan-xiansheng, who just makes a gesture like, ‘Well go on then’. He isn’t quite sure why he thought Lan-xiansheng might let him off easy.

“I fidgeted,” Jingyi confesses, conscious not to use all the words to describe it that adults don’t like. “Then I had to stand at the back for less disrupting, but then I started walking around so I got in trouble anyway.”

“Mn.” Jingyi braces himself for another reprimand, but after a long pause all Hanguang-Jun says is a neutral, “Do you do this often?”

Jingyi fidgets again, sneaks a look around for some sort of escape route. But there are bunnies everywhere that he doesn’t want to scare, and Lan-xiansheng blocking the path. And Hanguang-Jun is looking at him like he’s willing to wait until curfew to hear the answer. His usual reply of ‘I don’t know’ is a lump in his throat that he can’t give a voice to. His lips tremble briefly as he contemplates letting the easy lie slip free, but instead he tells the truth.

“I don’t understand what they teach!” It’s humiliating to admit and his cheeks and eyes burn with it, but he soldiers on. “And then I can’t ask for help because it’s interrupting, and then I can’t think about the lesson because I don’t know what they’re saying, and then I have to move my body because my brain isn’t working, and then I get in trouble for moving around!”

“Mn. That is frustrating,” Hanguang-Jun says softly and Jingyi nearly cries in relief. Because yes! It’s frustrating!!

“If I walk around I feel better! But I can’t walk in class, and I get in trouble if I don’t go to class – I never know what to do to be good.” It would seem more tears are incoming whether Jingyi wants them to or not – his eyes well up with a fresh round and his hands clench into fists on his knees as he fights against the urge to continue voicing his hurts. After all, there’s answering Hanguang-Jun’s questions even if the answers are bad, and then there’s demanding to know why he didn’t want to adopt him and not Lan Yuan.

Even he knows not to ask that question.

“It can be difficult to follow the rules,” Hanguang-Jun replies, his calm acceptance a balm to Jingyi’s aching chest. “You are not a bad child.”

“The aunties say I am.”

“What aunties?” Lan-xiansheng asks suddenly, his voice harsh after Hanguang-Jun’s soft voice that feels like a blanket but for his ears.

“In the children’s home.”

“Do you spend your time outside of classes with the others there?” Lan-xiansheng continues probing. Jingyi scrubs at his eyes again and lifts his head to look at him, brows furrowed in confusion.

“Yes, Lan-xiansheng.”

“Why do you not return home?”

Jingyi fights a new wave of tears – he knows they don’t want him, but why do they have to be so mean about it now? Why do they have to make him say it out loud? It feels like a new punishment, an even worse one, and Jingyi can’t help but snap a little as he replies, “It is my home!”

For a moment there’s nothing but the sound of the wind in the treetops and some quiet munching from the bunny nearest him chewing up a tiny clump of grass. Jingyi tries to hold the rest of it in but now that he’s opened the door just a little crack, the rest of the emotions that feel too big to hold come spilling out without his permission.

“The aunties are the only ones who want to have me but they don’t like it when I’m noisy or feel like I need to move so they give me chores to keep me away from them and they always say that I’m too much so I guess that’s why no one picked me when they picked everyone else to take home with them so I live there like the rest of the kids without their parents. But they’re different, their parents come see them sometimes or talk to them with letters but mine are gone forever so I can’t talk to them, not even when I feel really sad and – and-“

“Jingyi.” Hanguang-Jun’s voice cuts through his quickly-rising sobs so Jingyi stops talking long enough to suck in a few deep breaths. He watches Hanguang-Jun gently remove the rabbit from his lap to return it to the grass and then hold one arm out slightly to the side. He glances at his empty hand and waits for something to happen, and when nothing does he panics, worried that he’s supposed to be doing something and he’s not. He’s going to upset Hanguang-Jun. He doesn’t know what Hanguang-Jun wants from him and he’s going to disappoint him just like he does everyone else. He hears it all the time, it’s adults’ favorite thing to say to him besides “stop it”. He doesn’t want to hear it from Hanguang-Jun too.

“Shufu, may I have an hour to help Jingyi?”

Help? Jingyi’s eyes widen and he hurries up to his feet, scrubbing at his eyes harshly enough to make his skin sting.

“Ah – Hanguang-Jun! It’s okay, I’m fine, I don’t need help with anything!” An image flashes in his mind of Hanguang-Jun being reduced to carrying his water buckets for him because he was too weak to do it himself and he mentally flinches away from the thought as if it burned him. “I can carry the water myself! I have to do it all the time, I’m strong, it’s-“

“I will return in an hour,” Lan-xiansheng says and just like that he’s gone again. Jingyi’s protests die on his tongue and he shuffles his weight from foot to foot, unsure of what comes next.

“Hanguang-Jun..?”

“I will not punish you,” Hanguang-Jun says quietly. “Would you like a hug?”

A…hug? Jingyi’s mind goes utterly blank, nothing in it save the imagined weight and warmth of someone wrapping their arms tightly around him, pressing him close and letting him curl in. He sleeps like that sometimes, on his stomach with his face squished into his bed and his arms curled up between his chest and the mattress. It almost feels the same, if he’s sleepy enough. Now he walks forward until he can tentatively lean out far enough to wrap his arms around Hanguang-Jun’s neck – only to find himself gently maneuvered right into his lap to be squeezed tightly enough that it makes him want to cry all over again.

It feels even better than his vague memories of being held by his parents. Hanguang-Jun is warm and sturdy and Jingyi tentatively burrows in closer, all anger at the man forgotten in the onslaught of pleasant sensations buzzing under Jingyi’s skin.

“It is not a sin to be different,” Hanguang-Jun tells him when his sniffling has slowed down and he’s feeling pleasantly floaty, still cradled in Hanguang-Jun’s lap. Surrounded by soft white silk and the warmth of Hanguang-Jun’s arms, it’s difficult to remember why he was upset in the first place. “Your mind works in a way that makes it difficult to sit and learn like other children do. This does not make you a bad child.”

Jingyi sniffles and scrubs his sleeve under his drippy nose despite knowing the rule to stay neat and clean, and he thinks to himself that he must still be a bad child since he breaks so many rules even when he knows them. But he doesn’t want to contradict Hanguang-Jun, doesn’t want to argue in case it means he’ll stop getting his hug, so he just nods and says nothing instead. Saying nothing is usually safer, especially in situations he hasn’t ever had to be in before.

Hanguang-Jun stays silent after that, and Jingyi falls asleep to the sound of quiet breathing and wind and rustling grass, the occasional creak of bamboo, the soft thumping of the rabbits hopping around them. It’s peaceful, and Jingyi dreams that this is his life, not Lan Yuan’s. He dreams that he gets to be the one with such a kind father, with rabbits for friends, with reassurance whenever he needs it that he’s good, that he can do good things. It’s a wonderful dream, and when Jingyi is shaken gently awake he feels something empty open up in his chest to have lost it.

Lan-xiansheng is back for him, so Jingyi clambers out of Hanguang-Jun’s lap to offer him a bow, unable to quite meet the man’s eyes. “This humble disciple thanks Hanguang-Jun,” he mumbles, cheeks and ears and eyes burning. This time he leaves with Lan-xiansheng, buckets in hand and his head still down as he trails along behind. They return to the main complex, down out of the back hills Jingyi hadn’t really needed to go to in the first place for his assignment. Lan-xiansheng stops long enough for him to squat by a stream and fill his buckets as far as he can; they’re heavy on the way back, and some water sloshes out over the rims as he walks, but they make it back to the Yashi without too much incident.

Jingyi places the buckets carefully where they go, and then kneels in front of Lan-xiansheng’s desk to hear the next part of his punishment. For all that Hanguang-Jun had said he’s not a bad child, everyone else who knows him better knows that’s not true – including Lan-xiansheng, who’s still the one actually in charge of his discipline. It's impossible that there isn't more coming after that display, and he'll take it just like he's taken all the rest of it.

Fairy tale-ish AU where the Cloud Recesses arc still happens, but LWJ is widely known to be suffering some kind of stone heart curse that prevents him from Feelings. The Lan have tried everything, but their precious second jade cannot be thawed. They can't even identify the curse. It's tragic. And very Lan. He's probably acquired some ridiculous honorific about it because *slaps LWJ* you can fit so many titles in this bad boy.

Then WWX shows up, runs into LWJ, and like... this guy... is hilarious?

Like, WWX is immediately Fascinated by this guy that everyone keeps saying is a tragically frigid perfect upright Lan. Because the guy is clearly full of quiet simmering rage (okay mostly just annoyance) and deeply, deeply bitchy. He's fun to provoke. He gets all of WWX's literary puns. He's got this hilarious deadpan humor that... like... how is no one else seeing this?

Novel WWX was hooked pretty early, but with the mystery of this curse that no one can explain, WWX fixates hard and picks up on a lot of what he otherwise would've missed.

He tries a million different curse breaking techniques. Works on it in class and has less time to bother LQR with shenanigans. Drags LWJ to the library to research, instead of being dragged there to copy lines.

He talks to LWJ instead of provoking him (he still provokes him). Notices LWJ is sad. awkward. speaks like his friends are all books. Gives him the benefit of the doubt, at first, because the poor guy's cursed.

WWX asks what kind of curse it is: no one knows. They can't even find a curse mark. No purification ritual has ever worked.

What do they think it is? For a long while, it was thought to be a curse from his mother, and that she hadn't wanted to deal with such a fussy child. When did they tell him that? Around the time when he was taken from her, just after uncle told him that his crying was unacceptably disruptive. Being disruptive meant he would miss his monthly visit. (LWJ has no idea why this is all spilling out of him. He says it all with what he thinks is a blank face, so it's not like he's making a scene. WWX hears the bitter humor in his phrasing, the sadness in his thousands-yard stare. He shares what he can remember about his own parents.)

The current theory is a love curse; they've been introducing him to eligible young women for the last few years, to see if they could break it. (Because he's Paying Attention and LWJ's face does a Thing, WWX adds super gay to his mental list of LWJ's attributes.)

"Lan Zhan... u know ur not cursed right."

Turns out, and no one's surprised here (somehow everyone but WWX is surprised here) this so-called curse is just the cumulative effect of the Lan repeatedly traumatizing and isolating this kid in various ways more or less since birth.

Maybe it's a complete surprise. Maybe LWJ had some inkling. Maybe he knew, but couldn't find the words to explain to anyone. Maybe he's like "yeah no shit but it made them leave me alone."

So yeah I've been having a lot of Feelings about how WWX is just utterly delighted by LWJ. Not despite his personality, not trying to fix him--he's just a dork who's head over heels for his gorgeous bitchy husband who talks like a book.

I was the requester for #1.

I am sure that part of the story that Wei Wuxian and Lan Q had to travel, and that was when it was discovered that Wei Wuxian had no core, and Lan Q was annoyed he never said anything and the Lan Clan had a technique to restore a core that was lost/melted as the core melting clan was known.

3. Hi! I’m searching for a fiction on AO3 where Wei Wuxian is a Rogue cultivator, he founds Lan Wangji floating in a river/lake and saves him. Wangji don’t remember anything due to the trauma he has suffered and his core is damaged altogether. He had a severe injury on his back but when he recovers he starts to travel with Wei Wuxian, not knowing his brother is searching for him. Because of his poor health issues he breakdown with a fever in the middle of a hunt, far from everything, during this time Lan Wangji loses consciousness, Wei Ying is visited by a strange fox spirit, really creepy whom he made a pact with to save Lan Wangji life's. In the history, Wei Ying has an uncle that reach both of them to advise something, Lan Wangji discorver to be a really powerfull fox spirit, i think they call him Huxia or something like this, Wei Ying "dies" by the venom of a fierce corpse (most like become one of them) and is ressurected by the Jade Emperor himself, the Demon subdue palace is actually a palace and Wangji's mother was the previous Huxia.

4. Hi, could you please help me find a wangxian fic? I apologize for the inconvenience, especially because i don’t remember much of the plot except select few parts of it and i dont remember if it was a thread on twitter or on ao3.

The scenes i do remember are as followed: Prior to this scene, wangxian might have had an argument or were avoiding each other because i dont think they had spoken to each other in a while. The scene i remember is WWX going to JYL’s place where everyone is gathered for a get together, wwx dotes over JL, going on about how he’s the favorite uncle. When he enters the living room, he sees LWJ on the couch, and sitting next to him is JZX half brother MXY talking to him. He thinks they are sitting a little too close and he gets a bit jealous but doesn’t say anything. I’m not sure if I remember it right, but i think people or mainly nhs kept saying how MXY resembles WWX, worsening the situation. Wangxian and their whole eye contact happens and everyone in the room is tense because of their interaction or lack their of. WWX suddenly goes to the bathroom, leaning into the sink…waiting and LWJ follows him in. They end up reconciling.

Thats all I remember, I know its not much, and i have been struggling as well because of it going through my bookmarks on ao3 and twitter. I’m hoping someone remembers this part as well and can mention the fic. Thank you!

But there was a scene where wrh manages to get wq married to lwj as a second wife, and wwx felt like he failed the Jiang-Lan alliance. And there was a big confrontation between wq and wwx, where she tells him the reason for the marriage was to save her family. And lwj might have been ill or cursed and wearing a mask (not sure).

7. Looking for help finding the name of this fic on ao3 I’m have trouble hunting it back down. Burial mounds settlement days canon divergence.

Essentially the premise is that the people living in Yiling often see Wei Ying taking care of and teaching A-Yuan by the river and a woman one day who was also there to wash her clothes asked him to look after her son while she was busy. This snowballed into Wei Ying basically running a little informal school out of Yiling where he teaches and just looks after any child that is brought there, including orphans and prostitute’s children which is kinda illegal. Lan Zhan knows and regularly visits. If the children show aptitude for cultivation they usually get sent to the Lan or (later in the story) the Jiang. The rest of the Wens kinda accidentally become a part of the Yiling community so much so that they all move out of the burial mounds and into the town proper. Because they’ve all left the mounds and disconnected pretty hard from the cultivation community they don’t even realize that the Jin’s sent people to attack the mounds. They found no one and declared to the world that they had slayed the rest of the wen dogs alongside Wei Wuxian. Jiang Cheng only finds out his brother is alive because he’s been informed that a small school in the Jiang territory hasn’t been paying taxes and when he goes to investigate finds Wei Ying safe and sound. @coffeehousefanfics

But it’s the one where wwx takes a curse from some ghost in order for her to move on. It’s a curse where he can’t see or feel anyone that feels “strongly” about him. He assumes the juniors all either hate or fear him and I forgot what he assumed lwj. They say to break the curse he has to accept the others’ feelings. So he tried to accept the fact that jin ling hated him although jin ling did not mean what he said and was confused at how wwx reacted. I think lan jinyi was the one who figured out wwx couldn’t see them because he launched at him as if he was going to attack him and wwx didn’t flinch. In the end he starts seeing and feeling impressions of them until he can see them in full again. Please help? I’ve been through my history and bookmarks and all open tabs of ao3. No such luck.

I saw a fic where Madam Lan lives because she faked her death and ran away, then she comes back post-canon - she's trying to "rescue" Wwx because she thinks Lwj is just like his father - and the twin jades forgive her without even a second thought. BUT WHAT IF she came back and they didn’t forgive her for leaving them behind? Yes, they understand why she did that, but how can they forgive her for not taking them too when Lxc was the one who had to raise his younger brother because their father never bothered with it and Lqr was a poor excuse of a father figure? When they needed her and she wasn't there, just like their father? And how dare she come back after 3 decades just to basically accuse Lwj of being like his father without any proof? They understand why she did what she did, but she's now nothing but a stranger to them, and they want nothing to do with her.

I like this. All I can think of is LWJ silently crying when he realizes that she chose to leave and that she thinks he's a monster who abuses his husband. LXC, who has been holding back the entire conversation, loses his shit when he sees his baby brothers tears and rips her a new one unleashing decades of repressed emotions.

Ok, so it took me a while to think this over, because there’s a lot here, and then talking it over with @demoiselledefortune I realized there’s even more than I thought! (still thinking about the genderswap jc one)

Also, poor, poor LWJ. 🙁 (LQR doesn't bear thinking about. That poor, poor man. I don't talk about LQR under the cut because it's too sad for me to contemplate.)

1) So the thing is, this isn’t a noticeably better accidental killing for WWX, because while the Lans may be less the powerhouse than the Jins, JGS will definitely try and use LXC’s death to turn against WWX. And it’s going to be stupidly easy, because LXC was a sect leader and the sworn brother of his son.

(I assume LXC was there because he was invited to JL’s 100 days ceremony and his passing there was a coincidence, while in canon he was already at Jinlintai. So maybe JZX is still in Jinlintai here, the confrontation happening earlier and thus before JZX departed; or JZX is here as well as he was in canon, and LXC was the one running late - in which case, JZX is alive and a witness and might speak up on WWX’s behalf at least to his wife and his BIL, at least to tell them that it seemed an accident. This turns out not to have much of an impact on the grand scale of things OR on JYL and JC’s understanding of what happened, bc they already trust WWX so much, but it does have an impact on JZX’s view of the world and himself. This is less about WWX than it is about politics in general and his father in specific. In that version he’s much more in-the-middle of things, much more aware of being personally dismissed. In that version there’s a chance he and JYL go live in LP.)

Besides the Jins, there’s also NMJ, who is a big fan of his sworn brothers not getting killed and of not shielding people from the consequences of their actions. Just putting it out there where we can see it. On the other hand, they’re not LXC’s most direct family. LWJ and the Lans are, so NMJ lets LWJ take point.

(There's a version of this prompt where NMJ qi-deviates when he hears about LXC's death. In that timeline should WWX get killed NHS' plans never feature bringing him back.)

2) Know for whom LXC dying instead of JZX changes things a lot, though? WQ and WN. When they decide to surrender themselves, they go to Cloud Recesses, not Jinlintai. LWJ and his sect I feel wouldn't punish WQ for LXC’s death. She wasn't there.

(WN, otoh, is very done for. There is no way GSL pulls a Jin to keep him around. He's a fierce corpse and the one who killed their sect leader at that. They execute him/lay his soul to rest. There's no further desacration of WN and that's probably the bitterest comfort WQ could hope for. WQ does try to shield WN when she realizes the Lans aren't planning on executing her, but she doesn't get that.)

WQ would easily get a promise of safety from LWJ for at least A-Yuan, probably Granny, maybe the others - on the sterner end of the scale for the adult cultivators. This is somewhat dependent on what JGS (and NMJ) are clamoring for but JGS wants the Stygian Seal more than he does the Wens and NMJ would be satisfied with the Lans supervising the fate of the Wen remnants. Besides, the most high-profile of the Wen remnants is WQ and she just surrendered herself. WN would say WWX isn’t responsible for LXC’s death, it was a freak resentful energy accident–

3) I think what LWJ does demand about WWX is... that WWX be given over to Gusu Lan. They can lock him up. And purify him of the resentful energy.

LWJ is in a frankly abysmal mental space - it’s only because his cultivation is so orthodox that he doesn't qi deviate. It’s all tearing him up, LXC’s death because of the guy LWJ has a crush on, LWJ’s want for WWX and LWJ’s wish that he could (imitate his father) bring someone back to CR and lock them up and LWJ suddenly being in the horrendous situation where he is imitating his father. The memory of the kiss is now a nightmare. It was always a mixed memory (how shameful, to lose control of himself thus - to take advantage of the one he loved - to lack even the courage to simply ask, either for the kiss, or at least for forgiveness) but now it makes him retch.

It's all twisted in the fact that LXC is dead, because of WWX. There can be nothing between LWJ and WWX now. Simply wishing there could be would be the worst betrayal.

(LWJ remembers the days of their youth, LXC’s delight and gentle teasing at LWJ’s inexplicable liking of WWX. The Water Abyss. And now LXC is dead, because of the boy he was so happy LWJ wanted for a friend. LXC always wanted LWJ to have friends, something akin to his own friendship with NMJ.)

0) (the Problem. The Problem is that I cannot see WWX staying in the Cloud Recesses if he's imprisoned there. If he wouldn't rather die at first, he will afterwards. LWJ thinks of his mother. If WWX dies LWJ would enter seclusion like his father once did. This isn’t something LWJ tells himself consciously.)

4) JC and JYL visit WWX in the Cloud Recesses while he's imprisoned there. JC hates LWJ for it, but I think he's self-aware enough to think “what if it had been Jiejie.” It’s hard to hate LWJ wholeheartedly.

5) WQ is in Cloud Recesses, too. She’ll never live outside the Cloud Recesses again, but it could have been far worse. She’s allowed time with A-Yuan (she is not in forced seclusion and neither is she A-Yuan’s mother but LWJ cannot let himself see them together, or else he starts to think of how she isn’t allowed to raise her kin herself.)

When it comes out *pretty damn early* that WWX doesn’t have a core, she’s the one who implies WZL got him.

(JC is in LWJ’s office clamoring, begging for WWX to be released into the care of YMJ in a hot minute after he finds out - which takes at least one or two visits, because no-one wrote to tell him, and it takes him asking a question about how getting WWX rid of resentful energy and not letting go when the answer’s too cagey to his taste for him to know. If it were just LWJ– but LWJ has elders. plus there’s also LXC’s sworn brothers to contend with; LWJ isn’t thinking of that, and JC will think of it later, after LWJ has refused to return WWX to YMJ.) JC is so so so angry at everyone involved - WWX for *lying to him*, why didn’t you *tell me*, I would have *helped* - WQ for hiding it from him AND not telling him when she told the Lans (to which she retorts that she isn’t exactly allowed a free correspondence. Hmph. Okay. JC allows that. WQ has negative scruples about lying to him about the core rn.) - LWJ for keeping WWX a prisoner here even though WWX is, is, WWX isn’t a cultivator anymore he’s a normal person let YMJ watch over him, let JC - even JYL for having something else in her life that she loves, that isn’t WWX locked up in another sect.

WQ is also the one who sees when WWX is seriously at risk of his life just fading away, and this time she tells JC: if WWX doesn’t get out, he will die.

The fic ends with WQ and JC breaking WWX out of the Cloud Recesses (it’s implied LWJ is looking the other way). WQ stays in CR, of course, but JC is taking WWX to Lotus Pier. There’s no plan for “later”.

I just want a fic where Lan Sizhui gets anxiety the first time Wei Wuxian gets sick, because poor golden core means he overestimated himself and what he could do that winter and got a cold lmao, they just wanna isolate him so he doesn’t spread anything around, the healers say they’ll have him fixed up in a few days. But LSZ doesn’t understand why he’s being told he can’t see Xian-Gege right now??? He wants to talk to him and curl up against his side and try to help heal him?? Let him see his dad?? Lan Wangji is allowed in, so now he’s pouting, when the other juniors (the terror juniors, Jin Ling and Ouyang Zizhen and Lan Jingyi, of course) find him sulking in the bunny field with a couple rabbits in his lap and glaring at a tree.

This startles all of them, LSZ rarely glares at people, and there’s no one around even, who’s he got to be mad at rn??? They ask him and he sadly tells them he’s not being allowed in the healing halls right now. They all take offense at him not being allowed to see his dads, and immediately hatch a buuuuunch of hairbrained schemes to get him in to see his dads.

Eventually, after many many failures and rule copying, Lan Qiren finds them trying to sneak into a window and sighs so hard his soul leaves for a moment, and tells them they can see WWX, but they have to wash their hands and not disturb him. LQR is slowly warming up to the brat by way of his grandkid being absolutely adoring of him, and also the fact that the worst thing the man does these days is being shameless and wandering around with rabbits in his robes.

So. That’s how WWX woke up, almost filled healed, with a little radish on his tummy (curled up around his side so LSZ can put his head on WWX nice stomach) and JL pouting cause he has to hold the bunny basket (yes, they brought the rabbits with them, obviously, that was half the reason they kept getting told to go away) and OYZZ and LJY arguing about a book on the other side. He hasn’t felt this loved while being sick in a long time, if ever. And that’s saying something cause LWJ has barely left his side either, and now he’s petting both LSZ and WWX’s hair and giving them affection blinks of love. WWX is spoiled.

writer's block prompt - LQR comes off as so strict as a teacher because in his youth, he slept with half the cultivation world in a whirlwind year before events with his brother made him settle down, and he is struggling not to ask his misbehaving students if they kiss their father, who he has also kissed, with that mouth.

“Teacher Lan, is it true that the Lan sect has a journeyman stage in your disciple training?” Nie Huaisang asked, his eyes wide and innocent.

Lan Qiren’s eye twitched, Do not tell lies warring with You know exactly what you’re doing by asking that, you impertinent brat in his head, but in the end the first was a rule and the latter merely a complaint, so he sighed and said, “Yes, that’s true. Generally, our sect members will go out for a year to gain experience in the world before returning home and deciding on what they want to do.”

“Wow, that’s so interesting,” Nie Huaisang enthused, and even the other students looked interested now. “Are you still bound by your sect rules during that year? Or do you get to just go completely wild?”

“We are naturally bound by our sect rules at all times,” Lan Qiren said, wincing. “But it is admittedly quite common for young men and women to – choose to violate some of them, during that year, and to take the penalty in punishments later on instead.”

“Did you violate any rules, Teacher?” Wei Wuxian asked, like a dog catching a scent – provided that that scent was trouble. “During your year off?”

“…I was not an exception to the rule.”

Wei Wuxian looked delighted with the realization, while Jiang Cheng appeared to be questioning the basic facts of his own existence – the poor boy probably had never thought of Lan Qiren as human enough to violate a rule, and the idea of someone violating rules on purpose with the intention of repenting later had probably not occurred to him. Well, that was fine; a bit of rebellion would do the boy some good, even if only in letting out some steam before he completely lost his mind in the face of his parents’ impossible demands.

“What rule did you violate, Teacher?” Wei Wuxian asked, eyes dancing, somehow missing the way that Lan Wangji closed his eyes and very firmly started to ignore everything that was happening around him. He’d seen this scene, or variants thereof, before – it wasn’t Nie Huaisang’s first time in Lan Qiren’s classes. “Let me guess: did you wake up a half-hour late? Did you wear four adornments on your waist? Oooh, no, maybe you slouched while sitting one time –”

“I slept with your parents,” Lan Qiren said, long-suffering, and Wei Wuxian choked on his own breath. “Yes, both of them. At once, in a few instances, but also separately.”

Nie Huaisang, that brat, cackled.

“You didn’t really,” Jiang Cheng said, bravely trying to defend his brother in all but blood. “Teacher Lan, don’t joke around with Wei Wuxian like that…”

“I slept with yours, too,” Lan Qiren informed him, and Jiang Cheng’s face turned green. “If you don’t believe me, you can ask them yourself.”

Nie Huaisang was by now howling with laughter.

“An essay on Speak meagerly, I know,” he interrupted, wiping his eyes. “Just like last year. This never gets old!”

“Wait,” Wei Wuxian said, eyes narrowing. “You’ve done this before?”

Nie Huaisang gave him a pitying look.

Jin Zixuan made a strangled sound and covered his face with his hands.

Ah, well. A little bit of teenage trauma was probably good for him. For all of them, really. Maybe now they’d listen to him when he explained why the rules were so important…

The cold spring scene - An important part of Wangxian's developing feelings for each other

The cold spring scene when WX are adorable teens is just such an interesting spa date interaction between the pair. WWX is a big tease and poor LWJ just can't seem to escape him! I actually think more praise needs to be given towards LWJ here... He keeps his cool quite well considering the circumstances. Although the scene is quite short and sweet - it still has a lot of details hidden just under the water surface.

After recently re-reading the ongoing MDSZ manhua, I noticed quite a few bits from the novel are missing. One scene in particular, is the one I am going to analyse here. I was quite surprised to see this was not included, even if it 'needed' censoring for whatever bullshit 'reason' - it still could have been included somehow surely?!

To me, this scene and the punishment scene prior to this, are actually quite an important part of the CR arc and a fundamental building block of WXs budding friendship/relationship. It shows their true characters to each other and the reader. LWJ punished himself alongside WWX because he is in essence, fair and just - even if WWX pulled him out of the CR grounds! We also see the utter horror WWX has at realising that LWJ has taken his words so seriously and is going to punish himself also. WWX tries to stop this happening, because he's kind and caring - he doesn't want LWJ to get hurt or punished, especially for something he caused. So to omit this and the cold spring scene, where WWX is very sincere and somewhat in awe of LWJ, is quite sad in my opinion.

So let's take a look at the scene in question. I have to say, one thing that always stands out to me is that WWX doesn't visit the cold spring until night-time. WWX was dragged out of bed very early in the morning, apparently 'before daylight even appeared'. After the beating, JC is carrying WWX away and they bump into LXC, who informs WWX there is a way for him to heal in a few short hours. WWX was beaten quite badly, and very swollen - yet he didn't go to the cold spring until much later. There were no lessons, because LQR was still away in Qinghe - so I find it a bit odd he waited all day before seeing to his injuries.

Chapter 18

It was night-time, at the cold spring of the Cloud Recesses. Lan WangJi’s eyes were closed as he relaxed in the ice-cold water. Suddenly, a voice rang beside his ears, “Lan Zhan.”

“...”

Lan WangJi’s eyes sprang open. Sure enough, Wei WuXian was lying on his stomach, above the blue stones beside the cold spring, tilting his head and smiling at him.

WWX has snuck up on LWJ while he is mediating in the spring. We don't know how long he's been there, but he's lying down on the rocks watching LWJ. Personally, I think it's safe to assume WWX was probably thinking similar thoughts to what he did when he saw LWJ in the cold spring in his second life. Blinded by his looks, but convincing himself he's not - as he's done so many times. We already know he finds him attractive from the amount of time he's said so since coming to the Cloud Recesses - so it's probably not too far off! The fact WWX lay on the ground in quite an alluring pose, just adds to the teasing tone he loves to use with LWJ.

At some point, probably after a long while of marveling at how beautiful LWJ looks WWX calls out to LWJ near his ear, which is quite a seductive way to make himself known. When LWJ opens his eyes, he sees WWX lying on the ground smiling at him with his head tilted. Interestingly enough, the head tilt is in a number of translations I have read as well. A head tilt is a subconscious facial cue that not only shows you are interested, but it also shows you are being submissive. Because it exposes a vulnerable part of the body, it's a sign that you are comfortable being vulnerable around the person you are talking to. Ironically, it's nonverbal communication that means 'I trust you not to bite harm me' - and considering LWJ's penchant for biting later in the novel, it's quite amusing. It's something females tend to do with someone they like. It's also often used in literature to convey flirtation and interest as well. So it's very interesting to see WWX adopting this stance in front of LWJ.

Lan WangJi blurted out, “How did you come in?!” Wei WuXian slowly crawled up, and spoke as he took off his sash belt, “ZeWu-Jun told me to come in.” Lan WangJi, “What are you doing?”

Wei WuXian kicked off his boots while leaving piles of clothing all over the ground, “I already stripped, so what do you think I’m here for? I heard that your sect’s cold spring can cure injuries aside from helping with one’s cultivation. So, your brother told me to come here and bathe with you. Except, it’s really not nice of you to come here to heal alone. Eep! It really is cold. Brr…”

I find this next bit quiet interesting. WWX slowly crawls up and proceeds to take his clothes off - which is a little provocative. He could have taken his clothes off before drawing attention to himself - but he didn't. He waited for LWJ to turn around and stripped in front of him. I know he's probably very used to be naked in front of the other male disciples back at his sect when they bathe and change. But it's the way he does it here that just seems more deliberate and teasing. Especially after speaking next to LWJ's ear and slowly crawling up before undressing. It's a good job LWJ's waist-deep in cold water if you ask me.

I also find it interesting that LXC told him to come and bathe with LWJ specifically. Perhaps to set up a spa date help mend their budding friendship after the joint punishment they received at LWJ's behest. LXC does seem to fancy himself as a bit of a mediator at times, and even used a similar approach to try and help clear up animosity between JGY and NMJ later in the novel. At least this one was more successful I guess! This could also be the reason WWX doesn't go to the cold spring until night-time as well.

“Do not move!” As he spoke, he extended an arm, and put his hand on Wei WuXian’s shoulder. Wei WuXian instantly felt a surge of warmth coming from where their bodies connected. Feeling better, he couldn’t help but to shift closer over there. Lan WangJi was wary of this, “What?” Wei WuXian replied in an innocent tone, “Nothing. It seems like your side is warmer.” Lan WangJi firmly kept his arm between the two of them, maintaining the distance. He sternly declared, “It is not."

I always find this part quite funny, as the adorable 'I do not have physical contact with others' LWJ was just pushed to the point he touched WWXs bare shoulder. LWJ refused to hold onto WWXs hand while saving him from the waterborne abyss, but now he's resorted to physical contact in order to keep WWX away from him - because he's shy. Personally I think the surge of warmth could have a double meaning here. Yes, the water is freezing and of course body warmth would cause this reaction. But considering how WWX subconsciously feels about LWJ, and the chemistry that has been there since they first met - it could also be a reaction to being touched by someone he is evidently attracted to. After the physical contact, WWX continues to gravitate towards LWJ, as he so often does. WWX claims he wants to get closer to him because LWJ's side seems warmer, apparently.

Wei WuXian wanted to get closer to Lan WangJi so that it was more convenient for him to flatter the other. Even though he couldn’t go over and was given the cold shoulder, he wasn’t angered at all. He glanced at Lan WangJi’s palms and shoulder. The bruises were still there, meaning that Lan WangJi really wasn’t here to heal. Wei WuXian spoke sincerely, “Lan Zhan, I admire you so much. You really did punish yourself as well, without treating yourself any better. I don’t have anything else to say.”

Lan WangJi shut his eyes again, without any words. Wei WuXian spoke again, “Really, I’ve never seen someone as prim and proper as you. It’d be impossible for me to do something like this. You’re so cool.”

Lan WangJi still paid him no attention.

WWX has now given two separate reasons as to why he was trying to get closer to LWJ, while they are naked in the cold spring. As we've previously seen, WWX actively uses self deception to rationalise the feelings or actions he is not ready to understand. There are many examples of WWX doing this throughout the novel. WWX actually did something similar when he saw LWJ in the cold spring prior to the Cloud Recesses flashbacks. He tried to rationalise why he was looking at the bathing beauty. So in the above scene, WWX is trying to reason with himself and justify his need to be near LWJ at this moment in time...while they're naked.

WWX goes on to state he wouldn't be able to punish himself if he was in LWJs position - but we know from other parts of the novel that this is not true. WWX actually takes the brunt of the punishment for the other junior disciples at his sect often. Perhaps not always out of choice, but I think he'd probably do it anyway as he's very protective of people he cares about.

What WWX is really impressed with is that LWJ took the punishment alongside him, which no one has ever done before. As we later find out, he's always the one taking all the hits and punishment dished out at Lotus Pier. No one has ever really stepped in to take some of the punishment with him. The joint punishment they received is an important part of the developing relationship (and somewhat unconscious feelings) WWX has for LWJ.

WWX didn't get a reaction from his very sweet and sincere compliments, so he continues to flatter LWJ to try and elicit a response. It is just adorable how much WWX craves LWJ's attention to the point he says 'I don't have anything else to say' after being so sweet - but then continues to praise him anyway!

WWXs compliments are genuine and sincere. He really is in awe of LWJ at this moment when isn't he tbh and his comments are very sweet. But as genuine as they are, this is also a flirting technique, as I've mentioned in a previous post. Complimenting in such a way, is feminine flirting technique that is a way to appease the male ego.

After Wei WuXian stopped feeling cold, he started to swim around the cold spring.

He swum for a while, but still went near Lan WangJi, “Lan Zhan, didn’t you notice what I was doing when I talked to you?” Lan WangJi, “I do not know.” Wei WuXian, “You don’t even know about this? I was complimenting you, trying to become more casual with you.” Lan WangJi glanced at him, “What do you want to do?” Wei WuXian, “Lan Zhan, why don’t we become friends? We’re already so familiar.” Lan WangJi, “We are not.”

WWX is yet again gravitating towards LWJ. As LWJ didn't react the way WWX wanted him to, he is trying to justify his compliments. He goes on to admit he was complimenting LWJ, in order for them to become 'friends'. Which I'm sure is what he wants, but subconsciously he wants more than that and doesn't quite understand that although he likes him, it's in a slightly different way to a 'friend'.

Wei WuXian slapped the surface of the water, “Now, you’re being boring again. Really. There are lots of benefits if you become friends with me.” Lan WangJi, “For example?” Wei WuXian swam near the edge of the spring, and leaned back with his arms on the blue rocks, “I’m always really loyal towards my friends. For example, I’d definitely let you be the first person to look at new porn that I get hold of… Hey, hey, come back! It’s fine if you don’t look at them. Have you been to Yunmeng? Yunmeng is really fun. Yunmeng’s food is also good. I don’t know if it’s Gusu’s or the Cloud Recess’s problem, but the food in your sect are so bad. If you come to Lotus Pier, you can eat lots of delicious food. I can take you to pick lotus seed pods and water chestnuts. Lan Zhan, do you wanna come?” Lan WangJi, “No.”

WWX begins to tease LWJ once again, because he has seemingly rejected his advances of striking up a friendship. So he initially jokes about lending LWJ porn, which he knows he would reject. In fact, WWX might have even been trying to get LWJ to get angry here once again - as he definitely got a kick out of it (and he later admits he most certainly does!). LWJ was about to leave because of WWX's teasing, so he quickly changes the subject in order to stop him from leaving. WWX invites LWJ on a date to come and stay with him at Lotus Pier so he can show him around where he lives - which is just utterly adorable! I've already covered some of this in a previous post, so I won't cover it much further here.

I really love this scene as it's nice to see WWX able to talk to LWJ away from JCs disapproval and hostility. It's also outside of the Library Pavilion environment, where he is being punished and LWJ is even more reluctant to talk. It's interesting to see how LWJ is able to converse with him a little more than usual, over their past two interactions. Granted, LWJ didn't say much here. But it's certainly a start! As @parlerenfleurs stated in a recent post, if LWJ had been a little less guarded - I have no doubt WWX would have been enticed into kissing LWJ, if he'd been able to get closer to him.

There is very much a sense of mutual respect and admiration starting to form, alongside their chemistry and physical attraction. Over the past few interactions they have shared, WWX has noticed that LWJ is very strong, perceptive and virtuous. LWJ managed to simultaneously save WWX and the third wheel Su She, pulling them away from the waterborne abyss. In turn, showing the shocking strength of his sword and himself - which certainly impressed WWX. WWX also got to see that LWJ is extremely observant, as he was first to work out the water ghouls were luring them to a waterborne abyss. As stated above, WWX is also incredibly impressed with how virtuous LWJ is, punishing himself as well as WWX. In turn, LWJ got to see how brave and kind he is by saving Su She. He also got to see that WWX is also a skilled cultivator with a keen eye, as he spotted the water ghouls hiding under the boats when no one else did.

I really think this small but sweet scene is a lot more important than some people might think. Once you have read the rest of the novel and extra chapters, this scene becomes even more important in showing the growing feelings that they had for one another from the very beginning. The Lotus Seed Pod extra shows the reader just how much both of them were affected by this small encounter. It's been around a year since they met and they are both still thinking about WWX's invitation to come visit him. Although they are miles apart, they are both pining for each other, thinking of what was said that night at the cold spring.

Like a House on Fire by KouriArashi. (oooh, I figured out how to do a thing) The Untamed. A modern-world AU non-cultivators rough 9-1-1 fusion fic. Everyone's a firefighter or a paramedic or a cop, Jiang Cheng gets a dog (and she is a Very Good Girl), Jin Zixuan discovers a new and shiny spine, Nie Mingjue just wants his people to be okay, and JGY gets an axe. It's mildly unhinged, it's excellent writing, I love it.

Imprints by Lisa_Telramor. The Untamed. A post-canon fic in which Wei Wuxian rescues a small innocent baby... whoops that's a dog. Except even if it is a dog, it is still small. And innocent. And helpless. And definitely will die if not helped. Featuring Wei Wuxian and his dog (!!!), poor mental health repair techniques, Yunmeng Bros reconciliation, and Jin Ling despairing over his uncles. This fic is so cute, I cannot even.

By Any Other Name by ShanaStoryteller. The Untamed. Wei Wuxian returns, but it's Not Right, and in a panic he retreats to Lotus Pier. Also known as that 'Wei Wuxian fucks with gender and then everything else' fic. Featuring Lan Zhan having deeply confused thoughts about his sexuality and loyalty to a dead man, Jin Ling gleefully calling Wei Wuxian 'aunt' at every opportunity, Wei Wuxian bitching about careless baby necromancers, a revision of Yi City, and Lan Xichen being So Confused All The Time.

Climbing Up That Coastal Shelf by Sour_Idealist. The Untamed. A post-canon fic in which Jin Ling realizes _no one_ is keeping an eye on Wei Wuxian. Then he learns what a self-sacrificing idiot his genius uncle is, and decides if no one else is going to claim this guy, he absolutely will because he needs all the help he can get. The Jin sect will never be the same. Featuring the return of Mianmian, So Many Family Feelings, Wei Wuxian scaring the Jin elders, poor communication skills amongst cultivators, and Jin Ling being possessive.

The Sword and the Shield by 29Pieces. Good Omens. A post S1 fic (written when there was only S1), in which Aziraphael is an absolute badass. Featuring the sort of angel where 'fear not' is the sort of reassurance one needs, and Aziraphael isn't saying that.

A Friend of Mine by CowGayKermit. Umbrella Academy. In which Klaus' buddies from Vietnam put 2 and 2 together and get 'that kid on the news is _our Klaus_ holy shit'. Featuring a ton of OCs that have been through shit and don't take kindly to anyone being mean to their brother. It's wild, I love it, I will take a million versions of this please.

Arc Tremors by MountainRose. The Avengers. An old-school post-movie fic where people move into Avengers Tower, this time because Tony failed to hide just how poorly he was doing after the Chitauri rolled through town. Featuring Giant Mutated Seafood, medical drama, everyone gets to be a little over-protective and tetchy (as a treat), and the bots being adorable. I love this era of Avengers fics, I will live here forever.

Shades of Grey Spill From My Veins (bleeding ink all over the page) by Reverie. The Untamed. One of my all-time favs, a What If WWX Grew Up In The Nie Sect fic. Seriously, this is one of my comfort fics, I love it so much, just read it.

Work Day by Saintlygames. The Watchmaker of Filigree Street. So much lovely fluff about two of my favorite boys and their daughter. Honestly, this is just the sweetest. Featuring Thaniel being too competent for his own good, Mori using his powers to spoil his husband, Six tolerating hugs as best she can, and did I mention the fluff? SO FLUFFY I COULD DIE.

There are so many more (for srs, there's at least four more Untamed I could put on here right now, without searching), but this is a good place to start!

[3ZUN wants JC but forgot an important detail]

couple #3zun wants Jiang Cheng, but they somehow mess up along the way before getting there, making poor a-cheng feel like "of course, he is taken 😔 he wouldn't like me".

Lan Xichen is the first one to take an interest in Jiang Cheng after seeing him tag along when wwx comes to hang out (or by lqr words: bother) lwj.

He just easily falls for the smart young man. There is just something about him that he really loves.

So of course he tries approaching the young man. And it goes pretty good too! Sure Jiang Cheng was a bit unsure at first why someone like Lan Xichen would ever be interested in HIM, but he slowly warms up.

Soon they even hang out just for themselves, not just because he tags along with wwx and happens to be here. Jiang Cheng is just so happy that someone seems to like him back (because of course he had a crush on him, have you seen him!?).

He also gets to meet with Jin Guangyao and Nie Mingjue.

They both wondered what Lan Xichen kept talking about when he mentioned that cute boy he met. Nie Mingjue knew he was friends with his didi, but that was it. Maybe a story here and there coming from nhs.

but it doesn't take long to understand what lxc means, jc is pretty cute, especially when you praise him and he ends up all flustered because he enjoys the praise.

The two friends were also slowly also falling for jc's charms, wanting him to themselves too.

They would have been happy with lxc getting a new boyfriend for himself, but now they actually also wanted a piece of the little cute jc. if the young man would like it, they are happy to also love him.

And like this, everything was going so well in Jiang Cheng's opinion.

He made new friends who take good care of him, He is becoming a bit more confident now that he has people who don't always pin him against wwx and his crush seems to also be interested in him!

He even thought that he should try and tell lxc about his feeling!

But then his hopes of that got crushed.

They were going to watch a movie and had decided to first grab lunch in a cafe next to the cinema. He was early but assumed he could just get them a table. But he wasn't even in when he saw through the window lxc and jgy kissing at a table, looking as though they had been there for a little while already and having a date.

He wasn't sure what to do, not feeling comfortable at the idea of interrupting whatever moment they were having right now.

He was about to back out, only to bump into someone as he was turning around. He jumped a bit, apologising, only to hear a familiar voice calling out to him. Of course, he had bumped into nmj when he tried to flee.

"Are you alright?" he asked, frowning a bit worried because of jc's reaction. "Yeah, yes, I was just unsure this was the right place" jc lied with a slightly forced smile. There went his chance to run away.

He followed nmj inside, happy to see lxc and jgy were not all over each other again, sitting down with them. The afternoon ended up being a bit awkward for him, trying to still have fun. It was not their fault that he was the one who misunderstood lxc intentions.

at the movie he took a seat next to nmj on the side, making sure to leave lxc and jgy on the other side of nmj.

he couldn't stay with them afterwards though, feeling like he needed to just be alone to tend to his broken heart.

and from there little jc felt more distant from lxc, finding reasons not to be able to hang out if everyone was here, needing some time to just throw aside his feelings ("I get it, jgy is pretty and smart, I wonder bother him with my feelings").

"I don't get it! It feels like a-cheng has been avoiding me lately?! but I don't think I did anything wrong, everything was going smoothly, I was even going to confess to him!" lxc said, laying on nmj's bed.

"Maybe something happened, when did it all start?"

"Three weeks ago? When we went to the movie I think".

jgy hummed, trying to think of what could it be.

"Well, he did look a bit troubled before going to eat" nmj mentioned when he thought about it, "He looked about to leave when I got there.

it was as if he had seen something bad, but he said he was just unsure about the place".

jgy frowned a bit, before remembering what lxc and he had been doing. They had decided to have a little date to themselves just before going, being more openly touchy than usual.

"He saw us kissing," jgy said, turning to nmj, "Why did you never tell us jc had acted weird before joining us?! We thought he had come with you, not gotten there early".

nmj looked unsure, he hadn't thought something like this had happened, he hadn't known those two had decided to go full-on PDA when they knew jc was supposed to join them.

"Don't look at me like this, why hasn't either of you told him about us then? Would have cleared any possible misunderstanding"

With this, they decided it was probably better to tell Jiang Cheng about it. Maybe he wouldn't want to join them, or even just give them a chance to lxc, but it was better to try than see him sad because of a misunderstanding.

But little a-cheng is so hard to contact these days!! He kept being busy or awkwardly finding reason when they see each other. He still couldn't really face Lxc with his feelings knowing he is together with jgy 😔 He wants to be happy for them when they hang out, not feel like crying. He wants to be a good friend!

So 3zun needs to resort to trickery to get him to talk to them! And who's better to do so than Nie Huaisang who of course would *never* trick him, right?

And so he went for dinner with nhs to this new place he wanted to try, only to be abandoned by nhs the moment they got the private room where 3zun already was.

He wanted to go, but nhs made sure he couldn't get out ("I better get a good reward for this dage!").

He had no choice but to accept to sit down, looking nervous and awkward. Not to help none of the older men were saying anything either.

"Look, I think we need to make something clear" jgy finally started as he saw no one was talking. This had jc immediately shrink in his seat, feeling like he knew where it was going.

"There's no need to worry, I get it, I got my feelings all up, but I won't push it on anyone and I am really happy to know you have someone great with you" jc started, not feeling like having that kind of conversation.

"I-I just need a little bit of time to forget it all, it was my mistake, I won't-"

"You got it all wrong!" lxc quickly said, not wanting to see him blame himself again for something he didn't do.

"But... I saw you two kissing" jc said, looking puzzled, how could he get it wrong?

"It's true that I am dating xichen-ge" jgy said, only for jc to sink in his seat again, looking confused as to what they were saying, "But I also do date ming-ge" he added.

This only had jc looking even more confused and surprised, looking at the man sitting next to him.

He had nothing against this, if they were happy that was fine!! But how was it that he got it all wrong? That he was missing nmj in his equation? now this only meant lxc had two great boyfriends he couldn't even compare with.

"lxc is head over heels for you" nmj mentioned as lxc nodded, "He also wants to date you" he then added, making it clear that lxc was still very much interested in him /right now/.

"Is this true?" jc asked when he turned back to lxc, the man giving him a smile.

"Of course, I wouldn't lie to you about this, I really wanted to date you," he said.

"At first we were happy that xichen-ge found someone new to love," jgy said, "But then me and ming-ge also ended up falling for your cute little face and your charms and wanted to start dating you"

"But we understand if you only want to date lxc" nmj mentioned, "you clearly were flirting with him, not us".

This was quite a lot for jc to take in. Not only was the guy he loved also in love with him, but he also had two other great dudes (who were also boyfriends with his crush) loving him?!? how had he attracted the attention of so many successful young men?!?

He thought about it for a moment and got a bit flustered at the idea of being loved by these three people. Could he really?

"You don't need to give us an answer right now," lxc said with a smile, "You can think about it more if you need to".

"It's also okay if you decided to only choice lxc, or no one if this doesn't suit you either" jgy added. they didn't want to make it seems like he would be forced to date them if he didn't want to.

They had dinner all together, jc being curious about how all of this was working for them. it was pretty interesting to listen to, also gave him an idea of how it worked.

By the end of the night, he had already thought about it, grabbing lxc hands as they were getting out of the restaurant. He felt like if he didn't say it right now he wouldn't later and would only doubt himself and his choice.

"I-I would like to try it out with you three... if you do want me around," he said, looking nervous.

He was taken aback when he felt strong arms hug him, looking up at a smiling lxc. "Of course, we would love to," he said.

jc couldn't help but look towards jgy and nmj once lxc let go of him, seeing jgy come for a hug too, much more gentle than lxc had been. "We already said it, we also fell for how cute you are," jgy said, before also being surprised when another pair of strong arms came to hug them both at the same time. "We will make sure to love you so much you won't want to go away anymore and you won't have any more doubt about us" nmj assured him.

jc couldn't help but feel warm at the attention and how confident they sounded in this.

Maybe he was also good enough to have such great and wonderful boyfriends too.

Activating a time travelling array hadn't been his plan but after being deposited in the past, Lan Qiren refused to sit back and watch his family and home be destroyed a second time.

This is a different tone than 'Once Can Keep a Secret', it leans into wwx dealing with tense political plays while being his brilliant self. It has 2 chapters, and it ends on a bit of a cliffhanger :V

Lqr takes the boys on their first trip to visit another clan when they're still very young. Up until then, they've never experienced anything but strict Lan rules.

Xichen is amazed by everyone and everything. Lqr keeps a very tight hold on his little handle so he doesn't run off. He reminds him again and again that just because they're not home doesn't mean they don't follow Lan rules. Be mindful of yourself.

Wangji isn't that impressed. He's too young to really know what's happening, and all the ruckus around him drains him. Lqr ends up carrying him often through their trip, Wangji's head tucked into his shoulder.

Then there's a banquet. Lqr lectures Xichen heavily on conduct and manners. You're a future sect leader. It's important to leave a good impression on everyone here. And Xichen has a look of so much determination, his little fists balled into fits. He promises he'll amaze everyone there.

"Just mind your manners. That'll be enough."

"Okay, shufu."

And little Wangji, poor little Wangji, doesn't like the crowd of the banquet or the noise of the performers. Xichen pets his head until lqr tells him Wangji will be fine. He spends the evening close to his uncle’s side being coaxed into finishing his food even when his eyes wander to the unnerving chaos around him.

The boys behave so well that when it comes to dessert, even though sweets are heavily restricted in Cloud Recesses, he permits the boys a plate of cake each.

He himself is tired and overwhelmed from looking after his nephews the past few days. Endless questions from Xichen, carrying Wangji, trying to keep both of them on their usual feeding and sleep schedules despite the travel and excitement. But he's proud. Xichen has been polite to everyone. Wangji has adjusted as well as he can--lqr appreciates that he hasn't been fussy despite his discomfort.

The server girl smiles at the boys as she puts their treats in front of them. Xichen gasps in excitement at the surprise. Lqr gives him a stern look. Xichen thanks the server.

Wangji stares at this cake and pokes the top with a curious finger, looking up at his uncle.

Mung bean cakes, lqr tells him.

Xichen takes his first bite and urges Wangji to do the same. Lqr takes a sip of tea. The evening is winding down, and he hopes Xichen won't be too excited to sleep. They have to leave in the morning, and he doesn't want a tired, grumpy 4-year-old. Maybe lqr can play a song for them to calm them down before bed. Another little treat to thank them for their behavior.

Rule #892. Always appreciate good deeds.

Next to him there's an excited squeal. Lqr looks to his nephews. Wangji, apparently having grown excited at the mild sweetness of the cake, had shoved the cake into his mouth with little decorum. Red bean paste covers his face. His hands are covered in the pastry of the cake. Little cheeks are puffed out, packed full of the treat.

Xichen laughs, greatly amused by his brother's mess. Wangji looks up at lqr with bright eyes.

Calm yourself, Huan, lqr sighs.

He should have known something would happen. He wipes Wangji’s face and hands and asks a server for an extra napkin when the one he has grows too soiled.

The banquet ends, and lqr picks up one sticky nephew and holds the hand of one excited nephew.

"Did we do good?" Xichen asks, a little bounce in his steps that lqr doesn't correct.

"Well," lqr corrects. "And yes. You did well."

I’m wanting to write a fic where JC brings his older boyfriend to meet his family and everyone keeps glaring at JFM because he’s obviously the reason JC has developed a daddy kink to cope. Just the idea of WWX furiously texting a group chat under the table coming up with more and more insane theories that this man is obviously trying to seduce YZY so he can have a mother/son threesome like that weird dream WWX had at 15. WWX’s mother is texting a different group chat under the table to annoy LQR with his fave student’s family drama. It’s very awkward and goes nuclear when JC and his boyfriend have to leave early to take care of his boyfriends kids.
