HEAVY SOUND FESTIVAL POPERINGE (BELGIUM 1985)
Crossfire was a Belgian heavy metal band from Aalst formed way back in 1981. They performed and were part of the third edition of the notorious but also legendary HEAVY SOUND FESTIVAL POPERINGE / BELGIUM ‘85.
In 1984, during the second edition of the festival, some drunken german slayerfans got into a local graveyard and ruined some of the gravetombs and messed around with dead remains and corpses. Let me state, that officially the real thruth about what happend that infamous night never was revealed. The damage happend. Who was to blame for all of this, we will never know. The damage was done and things were never gonna be the same after that night. Because all of this, the festival got canceled and the good intensions and name of the festival were ruined. At that time Poperinge was the "bay area" of Europe, between 1982 and 1985 they all came here... Metallica, Slayer, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Motörhead, Twisted Sister, UFO, Pretty Maids, Lee Aaron, Tokyo Blade, Warlock... the list go’s on. During it’s highlight, the festival lured more than 8000 metalheads from across the world! One mentioned political pressure and locals damaging their own properties to blame the metalheads. This only fueled the legendary status of the festival.
Tumblr media
30 years later, in 2013, Valerie Fresnais and daughter Kim Verkindt revived the festival. It was organized at the “Youth Center De Kouter” in Poperinge (Flanders/Belgium). Bands included: Alpha Tiger, Amulet, Grim Reaper, Iron Curtain, Maniac Forces, Speedbreaker and Tokyo Blade. 350 people showed up the first year, not much, but the metalflame was burning again and the word was spread. In 2015 there was a second edition of the revived festival, featuring bands like Skull Fist, Sacral Rage, Ambush, Fist, Ostrogoth, Raven and headliner The Rods. ±400 people showed up that year, again not much but the interest was growing. In 2016 they took a sabbatical, but in 2017 they were back with the third installment featuring bands like Stereo Nasty, Frenzy, Axxion, Leather Leone, Traitor’s Gate, Rock Goddess, Trance Mission and Praying Mantis. As for now, no news on a fourth installment... but i’m sure Valerie and co. will be back! Stay tuned for more \m/
