Am I a Girl? - Poppy (LP)

Multi-media artist Poppy released her 2nd album Am I a Girl? in 2018. Allowing us to explore deeper into the image of “Poppy” from her viral videos on YouTube, that are pretty... weird.

Instrumentation - For the first 2/3 of this album, synth instruments and electronic drumming being used in unique ways create a genre of synth-wave-pop, with a sort of vaporware dance vibe to some songs too. However, toward reaching the last third of this album, a surprising twist of heavier guitars that chum, and increase in crazier drumming turn the last 3 songs into pop-metal mixes, that change in between with good transition. Also included in this album are 2 interludes, which separate the 3 themes of this album (explained further in ‘lyrics and vocals’) adding a sense of mystery and slight creepiness, with its ominous, industrial sounds.

Lyrics and vocals - This album starts with more lighthearted messages, such as fashion and fame, but after “Interlude 1″ we see a turn in messages, with more political and social ideas, such as “Time is up (Ft. Diplo)”, talking about the environment and the consequences on humanity in the future, additionally, “Am I A Girl?” track-title itself with Poppy questioning the stereotypes of gender. On the other hand, when the instrumental turns, so does the lyrics, from Poppy’s view on the world to it’s destruction!

Originality - “Am I a Girl?” covers all sorts of lyrical content very well, with a somewhat range of genres that slowly progress and do transition well. Although some chord progressions are not the most unique, they still managed to become stuck in my head.

Overall - Nothing on this album falls flat or bores the listener, and the twist at the end makes the album much more exciting.

After taking a deeper look at his Soundcloud he has stellar remixes of Broods, Future, and Dua Lipa. I’ll be excited to hear some original music from this clearly talented producer.
