MWW Artwork of the Day (8/25/22) Jean-Étienne Liotard (Swiss, 1702–1789) The Chocolate Girl (c. 1744-45) Pastel on parchment, 82.5 x 52.5 cm. Gemäldegalerie, Dresden
Liotard first trained as a miniature painter in Geneva, where he mastered the extraordinary fineness of application that was to be the hallmark of his pastel style. The summit of Liotard's virtuosity as a pastellist is in the "Chocolate Girl." Here the medium challenges the power of oil paint. Smooth as velvet in surface, and with its own bloom, pastel is made to simulate a gamut of textures and dazzling effects -- of which the most brilliant is the glass of water on the tray the girl is holding. This masterpiece of the artist was highly praised by the contemporaries for the perfect technique in use of the pastel.
More of this artist's work appears in this MWW gallery/album: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.455655484539826&type=3

started looking into portraits of Anne Boleyn again and okay, VERY intrigued by the overpainted woman discovered by xray in the serpent portrait of Elizabeth I. just feels like there's a very good chance that that IS a contemporary portrait of Anne!!! It's hard to make out the full features since they're partially obscured by the overpainted portrait, but she has this like knowing enigmatic look in her eye, and a(n unfashionably) wider mouth, which Anne was described as having (and often not showing up in portriature, like the notorious NPG 668 has the fashionable rosebud mouth). Ofc, it may beg the question of, if contemporary portraits of Anne were destroyed, how did this one survive into Elizabeth's queendom to be painted over... but oh, how intriguing

I started this piece in May and meant to share it for pride month in June, but alas lmao. On the other hand, it’s never too late to wish a fellow a happy gender and sexuality! JDG, you’re doing amazing sweetie.
Pledge on my Patreon to see a version of this with, like, resolution and shit lmao. (link in about page)
[image description: a realistic charcoal portrait on bristol of Jack Dylan Grazer photographed on a red upholstered chair. In the drawing Jack is smiling, looking up to the viewer’s left, and holding his hands up by his face. He has curly highlighted hair and is wearing a chain necklace and a paisley shirt. The strokes of the drawing are bold and dark. /end ID]

But we are unbelievably ignorant concerning what goes on in our country – to say nothing of what goes on in the rest of the world. – and appear to have become too timid to question what we are told.  Our failure to trust one another deeply enough to be able to talk to one another has become so great that people with these questions in their hearts do not speak them; our opulence is so pervasive that people who are afraid to lose whatever they think they have persuade themselves of the truth of a lie, and help disseminate it; and God help the innocent here, that man or woman who simply wants to  love, and be loved.

This was probably on of the easiest sessions I’ve had in a long time. It was a whole vibe, the photos just seemed to keep coming, one after another. @therealej86 was definitely made for this, I think he is just getting started! • • • #jefw1f #jefjanis #EthanTate #cleveland #cle #explorecreateinspire #streetportrait #portriature #portrait #portrait_perfection #portrait_vision #portrait_mood #pursuitofportraits #postthepeople #myfujifilmlegacy #fujifilmx_us #fujifilm_xseries #fujifilm_northamerica #fujifeed #fujiframez #bw_society #bw_addiction #bw_perfect #bw_captures #gameoftones #colorlove #fujicolor #bnw_demand #artlife #lifestylephotography (at Flats) https://www.instagram.com/p/CU9yNSyAxa7/?utm_medium=tumblr

MWW Artwork of the Day (8/1/22) Sir Joshua Reynolds (British, 1723–1792) Mrs. Abington as Miss Prue in "Love for Love" by William Congreve (1771) Oil on canvas, 76.8 x 63.8 cm. Yale Center for British Art, New Haven CT (Paul Mellon Collection)
The actress Frances (Fanny) Barton, better known as Mrs. Abington, was one of the most popular stars of the London stage.  In this portrait, Reynolds (an admirer) portrays Mrs. Abington in one of her most successful roles, that of the young ingénue Miss Prue in William Congreve’s somewhat dated 1694 comedy “Love for Love”. Showing her in character (and adopting what was then taken to be a suggestive, or at least unrefined, pose —- unthinkable for a lady —- and exploiting as a strategically positioned fascinator the Hepplewhite chairback upon which she rests her arms), the work is both a portrait of unusual directness and candor, her thumb coyly hovering on the lower lip, and a “historical” picture, whose associations went beyond the subject's likeness, which Horace Walpole thought “easy and very like”.
Reynolds is one of the featured artists in this MWW gallery/album: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1755008291271199&type=3

I usually do not draw people who are smiling, much less showing teeth, because
✨ Drawing is Hard ✨
But, it is never the wrong time to try something new.
