It’s often said that ‘you can’t be what you cannot see’ so I understand just how important it is to get up, dress up, show up and truly engage.

We accomplished yet another goal this past weekend. My daughter/COO Jade and I found more courage and accepted the challenge to operate a concession @javitscenter in the #nrf2023 Expo Hall for 3 full days.

Yup, I know it’s not like we haven’t had the opportunity to serve on a global stage but it was a new venue, with new folks, new rules and new challenges for Jade, our young staff and me as well.

Serving up our #smoothies, #fruit cups and #açaí bowls to individuals invested in all things #retailtech from all over the world was extraordinary.

And I know our staff, made up of young adults, some high school and collegiate scholars, were excited to be in the venue too because they got to interact, ask questions, learn more, pick up swag and enjoy the convention. I know being on-site broadened their horizons and opened their minds to possibilities.

So on this #thankfulthursday , I am overwhelmed with pride and gratitude to each and everyone that supported @thenourishspot between Jan 15-17.

I thank my friend @claudiasanchezmahedy for seeing me. i thank @foodfleet and the @nrf for choosing me & @thenourishspot .

Now even I am #furtherinspired about the future because the more I am exposed, the more we grow and expand our territory!

✨‘When I was a kid the only other woman I saw with facial hair were circus and sideshow acts, I felt like a freak, I was made to feel like I was less of a girl or not even a girl because of it. . . I started sharing my journey with hirsutism because if one young girl saw my posts and got something positive out of it, it would be worth it to expose myself in that way. We have to be the people we needed when we were younger. . . I was diagnosed when I was around 10 years old. I was having severe lower abdominal pain during my periods, I was even passing out from how badly it hurt. I started developing body hair shortly after. . . The opinions of others and myself were extremely influenced by the beauty standards of the 90s. It was hard to deal with. . . I will sometimes still remove my leg hair. But it’s been a year since the last time I’ve done that. It’s been about five years since I’ve shaved my under arms. . . My face I shave pretty regularly. Living in rural Appalachia means I have to sort of conform to work in the public, unfortunately. I love myself. I know that my hair is not a thing that determines my beauty, ability, or worth. Morning. ⁣ I mean how is it Monday again?⁣ I was supposed to have a weekend off social media. ⁣ I mean I did. A little. I didn’t endlessly scroll or post. ⁣ However I did dip in and out just to check on friends. ⁣ And I’ve seen that the last week or so has taken its toll of on a few people. People I follow. The last 18 months have been the most challenging months of my life and I say this with complete transparency, there were times when I thought I had hit rock bottom and questioned my ability to keep picking myself up. Despite every hurdle I have overcome each and remained positive and resilient and I have achieved some unbelievably incredible things in this same period; I have successfully launched my own business. I have designed, built & launched my own website. I overcame a huge insecurity for me and went back to school. I studied for and passed my Level 2 Group Exercise to Music Fitness Qualification with flying colours. I have been nominated and even shortlisted for a number of prestigious awards. I placed 3rd in the 75th Anniversary year of Miss Great Britain and I am returning in September in an attempt to take home the title of Ms Great Britain 2021. I have continued with my philanthropic work throughout the period to raise money and awareness for several charitable causes such as Cancer Research UK and Alex's Wish. These wins have kept me focussed and driven and allowed me to channel my grief into positivity. My mother taught me to remain resilient and tenacious in the face of adversity and to never give up on my dreams and goals. All I have ever wanted was to positively change people's lives, or to make enough of an impact to help them achieve success in their own right. Helping other people succeed is one of life's simplest jobs. Empowering and inspiring others is free and yet it has immense potential to change people's lives. That is what being a role model is. It is using your platform to uplift others and evoke positive change. This award encompasses this opportunity wholly and to even be nominated fills me with pride. This week we have taken a look at Empowering LGBT Women, a theme we coordinated around PRIDE festivities.

We chose Barbara Gittings because she was one of the earliest advocates of LGBT rights. Her voice was heard long before people were even comfortable to “come out” and she is considered the motherof LGBT Civil Rights.
