This is actually an amazing step forward, meaning potentially less dissections of partially developed chicks (killing them in the process). Science needs animals for research but even by being able to cut the number of needlessly killed chicks by a small amount is a good step forward in my book. Imaging through the shell is time consuming and costly- with this technique (actually developed first in 2014) imaging can be achieved in situ, without terminating the embryo or developing chicks at multiple stages to track growth and changes.
