(That I take Power Rangers very seriously as an inspiration, that's what. Also that while I took character/world-building inspiration from multiple sci-fi /fantasy franchises- including Daybreak, Pacific Rim, Six of Crows, and Power Rangers R.P.M.- if you don't think that some of the biggest character inspirations aren't Ziggy Grover and Scott Truman you can think again.)

I’m not Native, I haven’t watched Power Rangers in ages, and I’ve never read the comics, so someone who is ACTUALLY Native/indigenous should DEFINITELY make up their own opinion and we should listen to THAT person more than my late night ramblings and if someone had actually said or written something about it please please please point me into that direction because I do honestly want to know

The entire situation between Tommy Oliver being Indigenous is kind of Messed Up in a number of different ways for multiple reasons (JDF (Tommy´s actor) isn’t indigenous, his brother is not indigenous, he’s the Red Ranger at the time, I’m pretty sure there were a couple stereotypes involved, etc. etc.)

but I really do think it’s interesting and brings attention to the issue of the kids of indigenous people and people of color being adopted out to usually white families in order to divest them of their cultural heritage. Historically the US had been VERY interested in cultural genocide and what better way than by separating an orphan from his heritage? Idk I did my grade 12 English project on Native American Boarding Schools which were fucked to put it mildly. But like if Tommy, the younger brother was sent away to be adopted by a white family while the older brother David was kept on the reservation having been deemed “too old” or “too Native” it’s some fucked up shit and also probably a violation of the ICWA

They could probably use this for a sequel to the 2017 MMPR movie. What’s the point of being “dark” and “angsty” if we´re not also criticizing the government, colonization, and creating an identity crisis at the same time? Especially when people are looking to overturn indigenous nations authority over their own children

the portrayal is at least positive even if it’s really not respectful either way we can definitely do better idk just had some thoughts

Now that the Devil May Cry series is without Hideaki Itsuno, here are my hopes for a potential DMC6

I know this might be repetitive, but I seriously wanna see Dante's human and demon halves in physical form

This can add onto the previous point but I also wanna see Dante PISSED. No jokes or anything to soften the blow, just make him absolutely berserk

I also wanna see Vergil finally let the consequences of his actions sink in and we get to see him be truly, genuinely vulnerable

Bring back Lucia

Give Trish and Lady more gameplay but also more screentime together

Give Kyrie screentime

Give the female characters proper writing and respect

And as for what I hope to see for the series going forward overall:

A spinoff prequel game where we get to play as Sparda prior to it all

More crossovers with other series. The ones I want most specifically are: Playstation All-Stars 2 (can they PLEEAASE make a sequel to PSASBR?), Shin Megami Tensei (They did it once and it would be cool if they did it again and weaved it into their continuity), and Power Rangers (I am literally not fucking joking about this; It's one of those things that looks like it can't make sense but then you realize that it makes PERFECT sense)

And if DMC6 is a failure, make a sequel to DmC: Devil May Cry. If DMC6 is a success, make the sequel anyways, just market it as a spinoff

Kaiju Week in Review (December 10-16, 2023)

Suit actor Kenpachiro Satsuma, who originated the roles of Gigan and Hedorah and played Godzilla in all of the Heisei films, passed away on Saturday at the age of 76. A serious performer paired with a serious Godzilla, he approached the role with near-religious reverence. Asked to give advice to Godzilla's next actor following the completion of Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, he said, "Be Godzilla. Don't do anything else. Write books about playing Godzilla, talk to reporters about playing Godzilla, but don't do anything else. Just be Godzilla." His second stint as the character, Godzilla vs. Biollante, is my favorite movie of all time, and it's pretty staggering how many of its key people are gone now. Rest in peace.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters finally brought Godzilla into the present-day storyline—and finally let him enter Japanese waters in the flashbacks to 1955. (The only other time he's done this in the Monsterverse is in the debatably-canon Godzilla: Awakening.) I enjoyed the flashbacks a lot more than the main story this time, as the latter is just piling on the Ominous Pronouncements while withholding details to a degree that seems unrealistic from a Watsonian perspective. Give me a well-acted, doomed love triangle any day.

Comic book sales data is nigh-impossible to find these days, but 2022's Godzilla vs. the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers must have made bank, since it's getting a sequel! Writer Cullen Bunn and colorist Andrew Dalhouse are back, with Baldemar Rivas now handling the art. First issue's coming in April. The logline:

Worlds collide a second time as everyone’s favorite kaiju meets up with Earth’s mightiest warriors once again to take on the most fearsome monsters from both sides of the multiverse, with Rita Repulsa egging them on! This one has it all: SpaceGodzilla! Clawhammer! Tentacreep! But what exactly does Rita intend to do with their collective might, and how have her mysterious new allies, Astronema and the Alliance of Evil, given her added reach across worlds? The Power Rangers are on a mission to find out, but first…all roads lead back to Godzilla!

I recognize some of the proper nouns in there, at least!

Godzilla Minus One added even more North American theaters (from 2,540 to 2,622), but with stiffer competition in the form of Wonka, it fell to fourth with $5 million. That gets it over $30 million here; we'll see how much of a boost it gets from the holidays. The film is piling up accolades from regional critic groups, as well as a nomination at the Critics Choice Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.

I'm also making my way through all the videos Toho put on YouTube when I was desperately dodging spoilers, so look forward to more Minus One gifs and screenshots.

One more trailer for the Kaiju No. 8 anime, which is, for whatever reason, going to stream worldwide via X/Twitter. (Maybe they saw that users there already upload entire movies and decided to get ahead of the curve?) Don't worry, it'll be on Crunchyroll too.

= Obviously Selena's new Evil Yellow suit is a big talking point right now and it's easy to see why - it's a great design! Way better than Zedd Ranger's in the main series lol - I think because it actually blends together Zedd's features into a Ranger suit more than how Zedd Ranger just......looks like an alternate Zedd design. Monster Finster is pretty good too, though I think Finster-5 is still my favorite alternate Finster the comics have introduced (which is surprisingly many, at this point)

= I love that Kim murders and I love that this book canonically makes it like. a thing. an impulse. a tendency. that she has. That her husband and her daughter have to actively tell her not to murder. My precious freak

= Understated aspect of this series is that it really understands Tommy more than a lot of comics do

= Sometimes a family is a 45-year-old mother, a 21-year-old daughter, and a 23-year-old displaced father who just got out of a 22-year stasis. Age gap Tomberly is a flavor of Tomberly I did not expect to get but I'm here for it (and NOT insanely jealous of Tommy, no.)

= and also Olivia gets pink!!!!! This was one of the biggest surprises of the issue considering how hyped up Green Olivia was, but honestly I like it a lot. I like how she's had her hand in both of her parents' powers. And make note of Kim's wardrobe.........I have a hunch about something.

= tfw your anguish for your lost mother is so loud it attracts the sequel

= so yeah! This is VERY out of nowhere and I can't imagine who it could be. There's not a lot of side character female characters in MMPR that would be brought in, much less ones that would know Zordon - honestly, my first thought was DULCEA. But I have no idea what the deal is with her rights and how she's allowed to be used...so it's kind of a crack theory at this point

= Wouldn't it be funny if she was Zordon's daughter though. Or Ninjor's daughter. The Return: Everyone Gets a Daughter
