Now that I have access to good quality pictures of The Coinless #1, I believe I can give it a proper review~

SO LET'S GET STARTED!!

I'm gonna start with saying the art here was fucking gorgeous. And I’m not gonna cover the basic points, too many people already have. Just lil things that held MY attention, knowing all the plot twists and spoilers~

Does this mean Drakkon DID have public executions in the street??

Bulk/Kim crumbs!!! Bulk is such a Simp man. OHHH

and and and— he tells Skull everything. Every part of his day. And I think skull hears, Skull understands.

This might get a little out of order now, but

It’s so sad the way she sits here bundled up like this. It also melts my heart. And she misses Zack So MUCH. And the guilt is swallowing her whole.

Like i said, the art was GORGEOUS. Drakkon was annoying as fuck. I needed to punch him in every single shot he was in.

This feels like a potential redemption arc for him, and I don’t LIKE IT. I don’t like redemption arcs. 99.9% of them. They’re almost never done right.

Also the fact that all of the characters not explicitly mentioned are all zombies now saddens me beyond explanation. It somehow kills scope for fanfiction to me?

But on the bright side, Bulk’s development is some of the best of the BEST. He’s the glue that’s holding the team together, he’s also the guy who thought he’d never get this, the underdog, the guy who thinks he doesn’t deserve any of this, and yet, and yet in every interaction of the team, he shines through. He’s the one who’s holding them all together, even though his own world— aka skull— is collapsing.

and i hope we get more development for him.

And please please PLEASE can we have everyone turn back to normal when this shit ends?! These people need a goddamn break.

Power Rangers Unlimited The Coinless #1

That was great! I enjoyed that a lot! Kiya separating herself from Drakkon was fun. Just seeing this universe again was nice. The team’s dynamic was great. The zombies were fun. Reminded me of Will Smith’s I am Legend (the book is better btw). Yeah, this was just a really great, overall story. I can’t wait to see where they pop up next. The only thing I didn’t like was Kim’s “death”. It’s clear she isn’t dead. It just feels like an unneeded fake out. Otherwise perfect!

So remember Drakkon?  Tommy Oliver if he sucked?  The only thing that kept the Power Rangers side of the main series interesting?  Well he’s back!!!!  He’s back and making new friends (Kiya, who wants to kill him) and reuniting with old friends (the Coinless Rangers, who want to kill him) to fight against Dark Specter, who wants to kill all of them.  Let’s see what wacky shenanigans they get up to in Power Rangers Unlimited: The Coinless!

- remember what i said about this book having old woman yuri?  yeah.

- not to be weird but I totally get Drakkon’s smile rn.  I would also be super happy if Scorpina was on top of me about to murder me

- MURDER WIFE [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE FROM THE SITCOM AUDIENCE]

- you ever get saved from street execution by your ex-wife and immediately start nagging her.  he’s such an asshole

- THREATENING LETHAL VIOLENCE JUST REUNION WITH YOUR EX THINGS!!!!!!!!!!!

- ignoring how he sucks this is our first confirmation that the events of DND were important to this book (Dark Specter refers to this as the first world he conquered, so I guess the idea is it’s because he was summoned through the Deadlock opening) though Evil Andros isn’t mentioned or referenced in any way.  So I don’t know if he’ll be important later or if he’ll just be quietly written off as having been killed by this point

- Kiya just doesn’t have the headspace to even try and figure out the weird anti-divorce dynamic being laid out in front of her and I don’t blame her.  Finster-5 gets more points for literally not even listening to them (he’s been dealing with them for over a decade) 

- "keep zombie loved one hidden as a way to keep them safe and possibly get through to them even though it’ll inevitably come back to bite you in the ass” is an inherently gay trope

- Honestly, between the White powers being unable to be split and Drakkon refusing to give up the Green coin, this is more respect for Tommy’s powers and more analysis of Tommy’s feelings towards them than the main series have done..................since Necessary Evil 

- ZACK/KIM IN THESE COMICS AGAIN?!????!??  IT’S A GODDAMN MIRACLE

- yes it sucks that Zack had to be the one sacrificed here but at least it’s giving him more narrative and emotional importance than he has in ages

- and heyyyyy we got a little explanation of where the fuck the Triceratops coin has been these past few Coinless stories!  Trini had it and refused to let anyone else take it in order to keep Billy close to her.  Simple, but effective

- CAN YOU TWO JUST...........................I DON’T EVEN KNOW.  KNOCK IT OFF

- you know I didn’t think you could make Drakkon and Slayer’s dynamic even funnier but turns out what you had to do was add a bloodthirsty daughter who really wants to kill her horrible new dad 

- oh.........i hoped you would be dead, tbh 

- remember how I said in my one ask Drakkon and Slayer get pissed if the other gets hurt by someone else?  yeah.  

- and yeah.  This one wins though for being probably the funniest sequences of panels in the book.  Just casually stopping the fifth attempted murder of your ex that day 

- AND YEAH.  this one is just insane though

- oh look it’s the sequence that made me want to chew through my walls at five am on a Wednesday morning

- HE’S SO FUCKING PISSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  this scene was described to me as “he said ‘it’s all yours’ to Dark Specter but apparently he meant everything except Kim” and i just GHRHGHRHGHRGHRHRH

so yeah obviously I hate that Slayer was captured and is more than likely going to end up possessed this entire event BUT looking at it from a story perspective 

a) Slayer’s too popular and too crucial to the Coinless World for her to be killed off.  She’ll be back

b) If they’re going where I think they’re going with Drakkon’s development here taking out Slayer is the way to do it.  That page in particular was very clearly setting up that this is meant to hit him personally and possibly be the moment where he finally “wakes up” in a sense

Think this will be easier if I move through the characters involved, rather than the plot as a whole, because...reasons.

Drakkon: Still has delusions of grandeur, even while walking through the overgrown Angel Grove, with literally nobody around, flaunting his God Complex while also whispering things to himself with Kiya barely ten feet away from him at any given time. Also, there are implications that he believes that if Rita gets to him, he'll be put under her obedience spell again--which seems to be the one thing he's really afraid of? Is still grossly intrigued and focused on both Kim AND Jason, with that stupid pseudo-flirting and that stupid grin on his face. Also, he apparently WOULD have volunteered his White Tiger coin for the diffuser, but NEVER his Green? Bonus info: the White Light can't be diffused/split, which is why there also weren't any white sentries. Kiya: Kinda wants to help these people that have been turned into Lava-Zombies under the thrall of Dark Specter, and the survivors that got on her good side by attacking Drakkon first thing, but... Spent the entire time wanting to kill Drakkon, trying to hurt Drakkon, thinking about what would come next. And the first thing she did when powered up WAS try and kill him. Zack: Snagged by the legions of infected, possibly trying to save Kim as a last ditch effort to save them all. The only named Lava-Zombie, and possibly the defacto leader of the infected as he is the only one that seems able to form comprehensible phrases, mega-grow, and exude a strangely non-sinister aura even while on the attack. Scorpina: Got to attack and knock-around Drakkon on first contact after trying to dismiss some zombies that were mobbing on Drakkon and Kiya after a long walk out of the wilderness because Drakkon doesn't have very good aim with the Master Arc. She jokes with Trini now, and her Ranger Color is Black (lovely call back to Adam) with HORNS and a CAPE. Also, she and Trini hug~ Trini: Definitely flirted with Scorpina somewhere in the opening. Possibly had a deterioration in her relationship with Kim after Zack was lost to Dark Specter and it was revealed that Trini STILL had Billy's Coin and never told anyone. She would have added it to their arsenal and Finster-5's new diffuser voluntarily, but Drakkon wasn't patient and took the choice away from her. Jason: Returned to Angel Grove to live in the highest tower while the other survivors hid in the bunker beneath. Complete with shotguns and medication and MASSIVE, MASSIVE PTSD. He got one good shot in with Drakkon when he walked through the door. I'm a little sad that his mental health is so bad that he kept that fucking Prison Suit and the recobbled Power Coins inside of it, but there are implications that he'll have more to do later. And he kept that stupid fucking beard. Kimberly: Kept shooting at Drakkon, but also saving his neck from everyone else. Got him to bleed, unlike everyone else, though. Is suffering terrible extra guilt from losing Zack and everyone else, but is still also in leader mode from her time on the throne. Did not appreciate being called 'mine' or 'Ranger Slayer' but Drakkon, but still saved him as well as everyone else at the sacrifice of herself to the lava-zombies--mainly zombie Zack saying words that probably hurt her more than the inevitable transformation. Was gentle and understanding with Kiya, which is no surprise. Bulk: NEW RED RANGER for the charts! He's so big and so pretty and so humble when it came to receiving it from Jason--it comes with a cape, too; and that lovely knight type armor along his limbs~ Unfortunately, since shit went down with things that haven't been actually well outlined because of mystery mongering from the writers, it is very obvious he's become the heart that keeps everyone's spirits alive, which is maybe why he didn't let anyone know he was keeping lava-zombie Skull entombed in the sub-basement. I personally think Kim would have helped with the burden since it seems like they're still as close as they were in the Ranger Slayer one-shot... but, then, she and the other ladies didn't seem to hesitate in killing other zombies, so he had his reasons. Also I found it something to really look forward to in that he seems to be the only one that does not care how close Drakkon is to him physically. Like, at all. It was a little bit like he was brushing off the yapping of a small dog instead of a warlord with all of his power returned. Skull: *takes a deep breath in; lets it out* There is no safe place in canon for this man. It's worse than Hunter from Owl House at this point. At least that poor bastard wasn't implied to be burning on the inside, completely without personal will for YEARS (because there is also an implied time-skip going on here throughout), bound in chains by his bestfriend like some Walking Dead plotline, and then thrown around and asked "why he couldn't fight Him" by said bestfriend when he got loose because Dark Specter WILLED IT. Even Zack got more dignity, being able to walk around in the presence of nature healing and covering old battle wounds in the city. Can we give this man a fucking BREAK some time this century, please??

Shattered Grid in the Powerverse

This Drakkon comes from a dark future timeline from Universe 18 (same as 9 only Tommy survived Drakkon’s attempt on his life) Three Phases Phase 1- One day Billy and Lewis are working in the command center when an alternate version of the Boom Rangers teleports in. Tommy is still with them. They were forced to teleport to escape Drakkon. The MMPR rangers are called in and they swap info. Drakkon and an army of Sentries arrive in the city. Lewis calls some friends and the Morphing Masters Rangers (MMPR), Boom Rangers, Lewis, Rail Warriors, Shinobi Strike, Beast Might, Shooting Star Squadron Rangers all arrive to help. The ranger teams face off against the Sentries to keep them from attacking the civilians while the MMPR and Boom Rangers and Lewis fight Drakkon and his backup. The Psycho Rangers (RBYBPG) The Psychos are defeated and grow into two giants (RBYBP merged and Green’s monster form) The Morphing Master Megazord and DrillRex Megazord are called in to fight them. After beating the merged Psycho they split into five monster forms. The sixth Rangers join the fight in their megazords (Construction Rail Megazord, Rodeo Megazord, TriBeast Megazord, Starlight Megazord) When Green is defeated he threatens to explode sending radiation all over the city but Lewis contains it using the power of the Solar Streak Megazord. Drakkon is soon forced to withdraw with his army but not before threatening to return for his revenge. Phase 2- Drakkon manages to steal morphers from every team (MMPR- Ninja Steel) and combines them into his own gaining nearly unlimited power. He returns to the PV and demands a rematch with Lewis who he blames for his previous loss. Lewis and Cody (PR 4Z) answer the call but not before Cody calls some friends. After a quick battle in which Drakkon wipes the floor with the two he puts up a mystic barrier to have an one on one battle with Lewis which ends with him stabbing and impaling him. At that moment the Riders arrive (Deca through Hybrid) They shatter the barrier and rescue Lewis taking turns using medical powers to heal and stabilize him while the others distract Drakkon by negating his powers (Mystic Force vs Mystic, Time force/Turbo vs Racer etc) Once Lewis is stable they all switch to their final forms and battle Drakkon. As they do the Morphing Grid finishes healing Lewis temporarily super charging him allowing him to throw a blast of power at Drakkon distracting him allowing the Riders to unleash a series of finishing moves forcing Drakkon to demorph. As he prepares to morph again Racer steals his coin and gives it to Lewis who breaks it. Drakkon falls back to his world where Finster 5 reveals that because of all the time he spent morphed his body internalized most of the power meaning that all Finster has to do is create a new coin and he can morph again. Back at the command center Billy and Cody throw the broken coin into the grid where the power is absorbed and spread out. Phase 3- Drakkon has his forces find and bring him the corpse of Prince Dex who did not survive his battle with Dreggon’s forces. Using his belt he gains the power of a Rider in addition to his own powers. He returns to the Powerverse to gain his revenge. Again he is confronted by Lewis and Cody however this time the Grid itself joins them. Outraged and disgusted by his desecration of the powers, turning what once brought life into a bringer of death the Grid shatters his new belt and zaps him with bolts stripping away his stolen powers until he has nothing left but his original Green powers. Lewis and Cody wipe the floor with him demorphing him. The Grid strips away his final power before making sure he can never morph again before returning him to his world where he is put on trial and executed for crimes against humanity. Weeks later the MMPR rangers, Lewis, and Cody travel to the world of the coinless to see how things are going. They meet Trini who at this point is the only ranger left (Slayer had left to atone for her actions by traveling the multiverse). They realize that the Zeo Crystal is still hidden on the moon in this timeline and bring it to Earth. The energy from it summons Trey from Triforia who splits it into five sub crystals and one larger crystal. The five sub crystals are used to create a new team of Power Rangers, Power Rangers Zeo. And the remaining crystal is used as a power source for the rebuilding planet. Using the Super Zeo Zords this new team defends a world coming back from the brink. It’s Morphing Time! Zeo Ranger Power! Trini- Zeo Ranger V Red! Rocky- Zeo Ranger IV Green! Kat- Zeo Ranger III Blue! Adam- Zeo Ranger II Yellow! Aisha- Zeo Ranger I Pink! Trey- Gold Ranger A new team of Rangers rises from the ashes to protect the world from Finster 5 and any who seek to take advantage of the chaos. Months later Kimberly returns, truly free from Drakkon’s hold she seeks out Ninjor’s temple to find redemption. There she trains with his spirit eventually becoming a warrior mage tasked with protecting all that is good. (Think Dulcea) Powerverse

So, I have gotten the PR Unlimited: The Coinless, and while I do intend to review it properly, there is one very important thing running through my head on loop.

The Differences Between the World of the Coinless Bulk and Skull:

World of the Coinless Bulk, whose star has been steadily rising through the years:

As opposed to the world of the Coinless Skull...who is heading in the exact opposite direction...

Like...they say any character development is good character development, and I LOVE THESE BOYS. These two have been my favorites for such a long time, and now they’ve gotten much more than one would expect to see them in; in more ways than one. And I’m so happy for Bulk. Seeing him wear a Ranger suit in a situation that is NOT played as a joke, or an incident where he gets to do some good and gets it taken away from him without so much as a ‘Thank you,’ because Zordon’s being a dick and Alpha can’t FATHOM of defying the big blue head and telling literally ANY of the teenagers that KNOW them--!! OHHHH, I just got goosebumps and even covered my face like I was five years old again!! If this thing goes on like I think it’s going to, then he is going to do SO great, I’m gonna be even more proud of him. 

But...it is looking more and more like, even in different dimensions, there is no scenario where Skull ISN’T going to get fucked over. Two decades in hell under Drakkon; beaten badly and then killed by Drakkon’s by hands; resurrected only to continue his stay in hell--this time under a power grabbing Scorpina--under extremely uncertain conditions. Helping try and rebuild the world after an alien invasion and the loss of the Power in any capacity, probably in a really terrible position with literally everyone on both sides of the war--and now this. What the fuck, canon? Not even the fandom does this to him.

favorite thing about them: This is largely speculation, but apparently that he has less inclination for immediate violence than his genetic source. Also the fact that his entire being is the result of Zedd and Rita being the pettiest little bitches to ever walk the galaxies. least favorite thing about them: The fact that he was available for such a SHORT amount of time and never mentioned again. favorite line: ...If we’re being truly honest, the only quotations of note I can think of come from YOU. Everything else is just...90s filler. brOTP: Well, in obvious acknowledgement of canon, him and Tommy make a lovely combination, but nothing else springs to mind. OTP: Not applicable; his is not in the right place for that, thank you. nOTP: Self-cest goes without saying. And due to your fandom contributions, him and Drakkon, Kim, and Jason.  random headcanon: While he was stuck in the Wild West, he ran aground of multiple generations of incarnations of other Rangers and their allies. Kanoi Watanabe’s second reincarnation was a doctor that came in on the railroad and took the stranger in--though his medicine practices were often hindered due to the bigotry of people that came in on the Gold Rush, Tom was quick to put that to rest. unpopular opinion: …Are there actually popular opinions about this child? song i associate with them: The Circle of Life

favorite thing about them: That he is quite possibly the softest, most charismatic Ranger that has ever been onscreen and in panel and he has never seen fit to give up on the most stubborn Red Ranger to ever exist. It is true that he gave Andros time to himself, to cool down, to do what he thought was best even though he hurt him, but Zhane is in danger of having Mary Poppins’ motto tacked to his skin. least favorite thing about them: Him dating Astronema was fucking weird. A light in the dark as their ever was one, but I think it was just the writers trying to get around the queer bashing that ran rampant at the time. favorite line: “What have you lost that I haven’t?” brOTP: Hrm. I have this strange feeling that Cassie and Ashely are his secret shadows to get his wings aloft so his can fly over to Andros and admit his gd feelings already. OTP: Somebody dig a hole and put him and Andros into it with enough food to keep them comfortable. Then toss in a how-to guide on sex and relationships and put a tarp over the hole.  nOTP: Even the IDEA of him kissing Karone post-Astronema gives me a bout of nausea. random headcanon: He misses his parents terribly, he misses them every day. But growing up with two mommies really was the best thing that could have happened to him; it cut any exposure to toxic masculine inklings off at the root and added to his need to show love and affection. unpopular opinion: For some reason, his being a Silver Ranger with no contact to any other metallic Colors feels a little bit like a cheat to me. And his possession by the Gold Omega fucker was felt more disgusting than it should have because of it. song i associate with them: They Stood Up For Love

favorite thing about them: She is a shapeshifter and she is a sarcastic little goddess that lives largely by her own terms--but she cares about people, too. least favorite thing about them: Trying to prove that she’s just as blood thirsty as the monsters she is constantly surrounded by in order to give off the impression that she is the most dangerous being in the room. favorite line: “I don’t have a stinger. That’s offensive.” brOTP: I’m actually quite fond of her and Black Sentry!Adam and their soft getting to know each other in Drakkin New Dawn (though I hated what happened to him). Also her and Coinless!Trini burying the hatchet and becoming frenemies that kiss and bang is a nice thought. OTP: Scorpina/Goldar. They fucking kissed in OG, and if that wasn’t enough that Annual comic made me FALL in love with them being in love~ nOTP: I could vaguely see her being suitable for a relationship with Sentry Adam, but I don’t like the idea of her with OG Adam.
