Just to add on to the main point a bit more, I did a ppt on this for a PowerPointparty and went way too deep. Currently scientists accept weather a dinosaur is a "bird" or a "reptile" depends mainly on the hip structure. As we saw above when they separated from "crocodiles" and "birds" yhe hip structure changed to accommodate and upright position. Remember also that dinosaurs similar in bone structure to alligators did exist and were considered "dinosaurs" based on timelines of existence. Also Cornelius Linnaeus who basically created our current classification system was a narcissist who dropped out of school to grow plants. (Which like same, but he had no training in any of this and based it only on physical characteristics in the present and not evolution or common ancestors (partly bc it wasn't invented yet, partly bc when it was invented he was off on an island "discovering" plants that the native people already knew about and naming them after himself.) The one good thing he did was standardized names for things so everyone knew what life form was being talked about (sadly he chose Latin as the basis for that...)

Anywho so then Darwin came along, and created his theory of evolution, which like...yeah that makes sense that common ancestors share traits and evolve into differnt things. (Remember the finches) but everyone was like ...nah we got a system... and Darwin was like...uhhhhh no, not really... like yes you use the same principles but it's more complicated then that. And now we have modern DNA technology, so most things, as long as they aren't too old, we can categorize using a mixture of both ways. But yeah, taxonomy and classonamy are weird.

Tl;dr: dinosaur =bird or reptile depending on hips. Cornelius linnaeus didn't know what he was talking about and now we are stuck with a stupid classification system. Darwin is superior, DNA testing is even more superior.
