Enemies in love
Tumblr media
Warnings: If you had already checked out the first two, you know what to expect war, blood, swords, death, but still, you've been warned again.
Tumblr media
If there was something the Shang family could do was to hold a grudge. You were the fourth generation since the Han family had usurped the throne from yours, in a war that left your family scarred forever, and left the magic users to hide themselves in fear of what could the new King do to them. Or at least they usually hid, as they got ready to war every few months for the next rebellion at hands of your family. You were also getting ready for it, but instead, it was the very first time you got to war. The purple and black clothing characteristic of your family was draped around your body, looking foreign to you who up until then had never wore them in military uniforms, only in dresses, as you were still a child, and a girl, so you couldn't wear the black pants and purple shirts the young boys wore.
But with your cape around your shoulders, and the militar uniform fitting right into you like you were meant to wear it. Yours didn't have medals as your siblings and cousins, who were older and fought more rebellions. But one day you would have them, one day those inherited medals would belong to you, or so you thought. For now you were content with being able to be by your family's side, fighting next to both peasants and your family, everyone coming together to finally get the Han dynasty down, and let people practice magic freely, without being punished or looked differently just because they had the gift of magic.
With your sword sheathed, you mounted your horse to battle, being right behind your family, in the multitude of the army wearing purple and black. The battle found you far too soon, as three days pass far too quickly when you know they might be your last. The first blood in your hands catch you by surprise, making you numb as shock seeps through your body, and for a few seconds you only become a machine invented for war, like a catapult could be.
Even though you knew wars came to kill or be killed, the concept of it is only real once you get the upper hand of someone and they end up dead by your sword. You're not sure how did you get to one of the many doors of the castle, neither how did you end up leading at least five warriors with you, but you do and you find yourself fighting at said door, but one of their people ends up stabbing their own kind on the back. Turns out, Sehun was not their kind, but had magic on his own, and the only way he could keep his family alive was becoming a warrior for the Han dynasty.
He didn't join you in your quest to kill the royals, as he still had to make it seem like he was on their side, but he had told you the fastest way to get to the throne room, and how many people were on the path. Six people reduced to only one by the time you got to the throne room, and there were more than five people inside the room, making your odds go down considerably. Though you didn't care, you had both magic and a sword, so you would be able to bring them down.
And you did, just as you expected, but the prince could only look at you in disgust from "cheating in duel" as she would say about using magic in a fight. But it wasn't until you got to the first steps of the throne that you did really see each other's faces. And when you saw her face, you knew right there you didn't want to kill the prince, and even if you were trying to usurp the throne, deep down she didn't want to kill you either. How could she, if even seeing your face made her question evil and kindness? How could evil have the face of an angel? Why did you have to try to kill her?
You were questioning yourself too, as you should want to kill her, after all she was part of the problem, they still oppressed those who had magic, yet you couldn't help but think that she was the most beautiful being in the kingdom, and you would gladly spend hours admiring her beauty. Yet, the show must go on, and you have to go on and fight with her, but maybe...
No, she was the first one to jump into action, not her father, and even less her mother, so you would have to fight her, even if you didn't want to.
But fighting wasn't that bad, you found out, as you had her close, and you could admire her from close. You could see from this close all her moles, how her deep brown eyes focused on you, and how she would subtly react to everything, and how would she grunt from exhaustion after a long while with both of you fighting, and no one wanting to give up, but neither wanting to give a fatal blow to the other. You knew that if you won, you would have to kill her, as you were there to do so, and also kill her parents, which you could do, but never harm a pretty face like hers. But you didn't want to die either, not when you were so close of getting what you want, what the people deserve, so you power through, trying your best to defend yourself, as you didn't want to hit her and risk her to be harmed.
It all came to an abrupt end when she had you against the wall with her sword on your throat. You're not sure how it happened, probably because you were daydreaming, or maybe a weak point you would have to train on, you're not sure, but suddenly she has your sword tossed to the side, and her family is long gone from the room, and you can see the end of your days coming, only if you allow it to happen. You touch her bicep, and by the firmness of it you guess she trained in swordfighting just as much as you did, so you weren't actually holding back but really fighting. Yet it doesn't matter, as you debilitate her arm holding the sword, which lowers each time more until you're free from her grasp.
She looks at you with fury, and almost like a second nature you chuckle, smirking as you see her raising the sword with the other, but you quickly take the blade from her.
"Did you think it'd be so easy, Prince Han? I am a witch, and no mortal can defeat me." You tell her, knowing that it was a lie, you could bleed and die like anyone else, your powers didn't prevent you from doing so, but she didn't know.
"I guess I will die trying then."
You wanted both to make that pretty face bleed and also want her to live, to live enough to make this part of your life, just to see her over and over again until your last breath.
"Well, if that's your wish..." You said tossing the sword to the side. "I'll give you a headstart, take your sword or throw you best hit."
Of course, Handong knew you still had the advantage of magic, so you could still easily win, yet she decided to take on the challenge. Strangely enough, you decided to not use magic, just took punches and gave your own, until you two were bruised and bloody. Yet, you took her two wrists with a hand, smirking at her in a way she was beginning to hate, and you looked at her in the eyes.
"Are you going to surrender, prince? Or are you going to keep fighting?" You questioned her, infuriating her further.
"I had a sword against your throat, you shall be the one surrendering." She spat with fury.
But you almost didn't hear her, as you were looking at her bloody lower lip, wanting nothing more than to kiss her. It was amazing how she could be so stunningly beautiful even like that, and it seemed like she was the one who possessed magic, as you seemed bewitched by her beauty.
"Is that the Prince's desire? For me to surrender?" You asked with mocking surprise. "But surrendering means I will be imprisoned... So I won't ever surrender, I'll fight until the throne is mine."
You couldn't stop yourself from pressing the wound on her lip, dirtying your thumb with her blood, yet you made a vertical line over your own lips, claiming her as yours. It was no magic, but it was deep rooted in your culture for lovers to do that, as a signal that they wouldn't kiss no other lips than their lovers, and in a way, it might be even more serious than marriage. But no, you didn't do it in that way, you perverted your own culture to claim stake in a woman that would be married off to someone else as an alliance, you were claiming as yours to the very same girl you should be killing, all for a strange whim your heart had upon seeing her. For her, that signal was a threat, a threat of one day dying at your hands, but she never knew when.
You let her go, deciding that it was enough for the time being, that if you kept yourself there, you would have to either kiss her or kill her, and you weren't ready for either, so you grabbed her sword and pointed at her, as if you were about to go against her once again.
"But I shall grant you mercy this time."
With that, you turned into smoke, deep black smoke like the corridors of the castle when the night crept in, with no moonlight at sight, and the smoke moved quickly, leaving Handong alone, who only took the sword you left, looking at the design so different to the ones they always used on the kingdom. She weighed it, seeing how it was lighter than hers, and while she moved it around she realized that it was probably better than hers, yet she was the one who won. The prince chuckled, thinking that it was just a warning, but decided to keep the sword to remember her first battle, thinking that in the rush you had mistaken it by yours, or quickly grabbed the nearest sword.
But you were riding home, catching onto the retreating army, with people cheering you for being close to killing the royals, even if you didn't succeed.
What neither of you expected was for either of you to not be able to take the other out of your heads. It didn't matter that you were trying to kill her, and either that she would have killed you if it came to it, as dueling was like dancing with swords, and you danced with the enemy, not wanting anything more than to get the next opportunity where you would be able to do it again.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
A snarl pulls at your upper lip as as grimace at your reflection.
"I assume you have words, my lady ?" your handmaid inquires from your side, hands clasped respectfully behind her back.
You grunt once as I raise a single finger to point at my perked up, suffocating, breats.
"Is this necessary ? It leaves absolutely nothing to the imagination and," my sharp gaze cuts to the handmaid, and instantly her haze drops to the ground. "Last time I checked, I was to be a princess, not a whore."
There's a stiffle of laughter from the doorway, and you watch as your oldest sister gestures for the handmaid to leave. As if she couldn't leave fast enough, she all but scurries away with the kind of haste she could've used earlier with bringing your tea.
"You're very mean to her, you know." Dong chirps, sauntering in with poised grace. Unlike yourself, she, was made for this life of ballgowns and pleasantries.
You were made for a sword and armor.
"It's not like she likes me all that much anyway, sister," you glare at the low neckline of your dress one more time before turning your full attention to her. "Or have you forgotten the many times she's purposely dropped my food and drinks on me."
A knowing smile pulls at lips, and she nods slowly, but says nothing further on the topic. Dong comes to stand before me, placing her gentle hands on your tense shoulders.
"The war is over, sister. We've won, thanks to you who led our men. Now, it is time to lay down your sword, and place that crown on your head that you so rightfully deserve." Her gaze is soft, but her tone fierce.
"It was not meant to be me-"
"But it is you, sister."
A cloak of silence settles over the two of you, your mind not able to find the words to explain how wrong this whole situation is. One of your sisters should be the  ones to marry first, they're fit for royalty. You, are not.
A knock at your open door echoes painfully loud through my room, and my gaze shifts to see the rest of my siblings standing in waiting.
"Are you ready, sister ?" Xiaojun inquires, swallowing hard as he stares at you. He's the only one who hates this idea as much as you do, because it means no longer sharing a home with his twin, his best friend.
You make to deny, but Dong doesn't allow it. "She is."
Your gaze flits back to her intense ones, and you let out a breath.
"Because you are Han Y/N, Duke Han's fierce and mighty last born. You, are ready for anything."
You take a staggering breath, willing your knees to quite their shaking as if meeting seven men is more frightening than going into battle with thousands of them at your command.
With one arm through your brother's, you other hand clasping your older sister's, Xiaoting's, tightly, you lift chin and straighten your posture.
Just like Dong told you, because you are the woman who led men into battle, and if anyone should be afraid, it's the seven that are waiting for you in the next room.
Nodding once, the guards pull open the double doors to one of the many ballrooms that sit in your home. Eyes forward, you do your best to not meet any one of their scrutinizing gazes as you walk, opting to just state at a family painting that hangs on the opposite wall, standing at seven tall.
As you stand, you can feel all their gazes inspecting, noting down my every feature, flaw. You make sure to settle a minuscule glare in your eyes, because if they think they can treat anything less than a noble lady, they'll be very sorry.
This process should be anything but slow, and yet, with how closet they analyze me, it feels as if an eternity passes until their steward speaks.
"The princes will now make their choices." the older man speaks, his silver hair glinting in the sunlight that hits through the floor to ceiling windows.
Yippee.
The youngest steps forward, his white hair styled to perfection with a few lose strands left out for the purpose of adding to his beauty – because although younger than you, he is beautiful, and you cannot deny that.
But Quanrui is as arrogant as he is stunning.
"Your beauty is not to the standard I expected, Lady Y/N," you feel Xiaojun stiffen beside you, and you have to dig your nails into his sleeve before he lunges and gets you all into major trouble.
"Therefore, I decline you, Lady Y/N of Duke Han."
Thank God, he's too young and is better off marrying his own goddamn reflection.
Quanrui steps back, his incredibly sharp eyes giving you one last once over before refocusing on Xiaoting beside you. Ha, good luck with that one kid.
The fourth borns step forward simultaneously, twins, but their features couldn't be more different. Chenle you don't know all that well, but one thing is for sure, he has absolutely no desire in what you have to offer.
He'd much prefer someone with a...yeah.
But that is not your secret to tell.
Hence why it's no suprise when he steps back after reciting Quanrui's last words. Renjun seems to have a bored expression on his face.
"A place beside me is not fit for a warrior such as yourself, Lady Y/N. Nor is our home truly," he sighs, clearly uninterested in this whole situation. "But alas, my father disagrees. However, I decline you, Lady Y/N of Duke Han."
He steps back, and you fight back a scoff. As if he could handle a woman like you anyway.
Your gaze flicks to the much taller prince, his body lean and shoulders broad. His gaze is anything but full of distaste. You're taken aback most of all by him. Minghao is silent as he simply steps back, not even showing a hint of respect towards you.
This time you're unable to fight back a glare, and Minghao meets yours with a dark one of his own.
Although the line is coming to an end, the worry practically radiates off of Dong as she stands beside Xiaoting. You understand why, because logically Minghao was your last chance. The next two brothers are older, and would have no interest in a younger woman like yourself – and even though you couldn't care less if you return with no betrothed, you know your father would be disappointed, and Dong fears the limit his patience will continue for you.
You realise in this moment how being declined by all the sons of the High Kingdom could effect your family. You'd be left with a disappointed father, possible bankruptcy because the Duke grows old and there's only so much burdens Dong can carry as the eldest. This house can and will crumble if it doesn't recieve aid from the richest. You've been chosen as the offering, and as degrading as it may feel, your peoples lives depend on being chosen.
With that knowledge, you raise your chin once more, standing just a little taller than before.
One can hope.
"I decline you, Lady Y/N of Duke Han."
But that hope cracks with Kun's words as he steps back, joining his younger brothers. He's the only one to grant you a respectful nod, and for that, you offer him one in return.
Lastly is...
Your gaze travels from the gleaming tips of his boots, up his towering stature, his chest broad and shoulders seeming ever so mighty. The eldest son carries himself with the kind of natural confidence every man dreams of possessing, and in your eyes, it is his beauty, that is unmatched.
But Junhui won't choose you, it's highly unlikely. He's the most quiet, barely ever seen roaming outside of castle walls, and has never, ever been spotted with a woman on his arm. Some say he's a cold man incapable of love. Others say there's just no one worthy enough of being at his side.
However, you are not a woman of stories, but one of reality.
His eyes are unreadable as they stare into yours, not daring to violate your figure as his younger brothers had done. In fact, if you recall correctly, he's not looked anywhere but your eyes this whole time. Does that mean he's interested ? Or is he just being polite ?
For Christs sake, put me out of my misery already and say you decline-
"I accept you, Lady Y/N of Duke Han," Jun strides over with more grace than your whole entire being holds.
Your breath catches in pure shock, an unfamiliar spark jolting in the hand he takes into his own, traveling like wildfire up your arm, before raking down your spine. His touch is gentle, soft, but nothing could compare to the tenderness of his lips that kiss the back of your hand; and the whole time, his gaze never leaves yours.
"I make my choice, and it is you, Lady Y/N."

The ballad of the purple dragon and the blue lion (The purple Dragon part 2)
Tumblr media
TW: war, swords, blood, someone almost dying (I tried to make it as light as possible, but you know, sometimes is not possible)
Tumblr media
Of the many things you asked her to do, Handong had been able to only do one, which was not forgetting you. You were all over her head, thinking about those days she spent with you, and somehow her heart wouldn't stop beating at the memories.
It was the third day of her being captive, and you had taken the shackles on her feet, inviting her for a walk around the castle. It was then when she realized where she was, in the keep of the dragon, one of the vacant castles ever since the times of the war with the old tyrant. Yet, it seemed like it was full of life, even more lively than her own castle.
"See? It's not that hard to be around you when you're not trying to rip my throat apart. You're actually even a good companion." You had told her, carrying a small teasing smirk that made her heart skip a bit. "I guess I can say I've been able to tame the beast."
"Says the one who kidnapped a prince." Handong couldn't help but fight back, scoffing at the laugh you let out.
"You're always a fighter... I like that."
She couldn't help but blush at that, as if you were there telling her those words. She knew she had some kind of feelings for you, some that she was willing to ignore as you were always trying to usurp the throne. Handong could say she hated you more than she liked you, but after that week she spent with you, she wasn't so sure anymore. She was used to seeing you so much as a rival that she didn't know how to see you anymore, now that you had revealed your intentions.
It was true, her family wasn't particularly kind to magic users, after all, they saw them as dark magic waiting the right time to explode. But you didn't use dark magic on her after you caught her, if something, you saw people coming for her when someone got sick, or when their crops were suddenly dead, or if a witch couldn't control their powers. Of course, there were some who searched for hexes and poison, but it was all part of the same.
"There is no such thing as dark or light magic, magic doesn't work by the mundane laws of moral. Magic is magic, and each witch decides what do they do with their gift." You had explained her one night muttering a small enchantment before a pot was brought by magic. "Look at those flowers, they're pretty, ye?" Another muttering went by, and the plant suddenly started to die. "See? That is magic." You muttered once again, and the plant came back to life "And that's magic too. Both from the same magic, but with different uses."
She hadn't been able to understand it then, but only now, having known you more, was that she understood what you were trying to tell her. And the more she read the book you gave her, the more she understood why you and her became enemies on the first place.
The Shang dynasty went back to even before the kingdom was born, and they had been on the throne from the first time it had ever been a throne to sit on, even to the point of marrying some well respected families she knew now, even marrying people from her own dynasty... Those who had been banned from the family from different reasons, those who weren't talked about in books, and neither were there any stories about them. And it all came to a part of history she thought she knew well.
A hundred and fifty eight years ago, the King Shang Baoqiang, was slain during a protest of noble houses who were against the magic they possessed. They deemed them too dangerous, as they were too powerful, so he and his family were murdered... Or so they thought. The truth was that the two youngest children got out of the castle with some servants, and only the oldest decided to stay to fight. From the two youngest, the family blood kept running, as they married and had children, and those children had children. Y/N was none other than the youngest child of the blood of the youngest son of the dead king, a king Handong was taught to hate.
She was taught that his real name was Wang Baoqiang had gone mad with power, that his magic made him too powerful, so he became a tyrant. The books Handong had read said that there was no heir of him, that anyone who claimed to be his family was only using it as a pretext to start a war. But you never spoke about your royal blood. Not even once on those ten years you spent trying to get the throne, you had even mentioned it... She barely even knew your name, she had only learned two days ago that you were Shang Y/N, and even less time happened since she learned that your family was the one supposed to be on the throne. She had spent so much time praising his grandfather and his great grandfather for freeing the kingdom of the tyranny, that she never even questioned herself it was like they said.
Of course, now the revolts made sense, and how the witches all over the kingdom went against them without a second thought. Maybe she should've thought about it a bit more, and then she would've realized that there had to be a reason for it. But she couldn't do anything about the past, but of course, she could change the future.
Or she would be, some day, when the gates weren't closed and the guards weren't on high alert all the time. After all, her being kidnapped had been a huge scare for the king and queen, as Handong was the only heir they had. Even though she should feel the safest inside the castle, she felt like she was safer in the middle of nowhere with you by her side. Maybe it was the looming threat of your family coming for hers, or maybe the fact that knowing you were one of the most powerful witches in the world, you would be able to protect her at any cost, no matter what she was facing against.
But you wouldn't be able to do so, as your parents had caught up on your intentions, so you were thrown in dungeon of the very same castle you grew up, tied up with chains that clawed to your skin, now full of bruises and cuts. But it wasn't the worse part, you knew that any physical pain inflicted was only a child's game, but that pain was the only one you couldn't hide, so it was the one they used mostly. Of course, there were times where your brain was used as a toy, and multiple spells were used on you, with the worst one being those where you saw Handong dead on the throne, and her blood was pooling in it, and around.
You remember seeing her for the first time at sixteen, on the throne room, young as you were, but never showing fear. You were also a rookie contending the crown, you were just someone else on the troops led by your father and your older siblings, but you were the only one able to get close to overthrow the Han dynasty, the one who has gotten the closest ever since your great grandfather had died. You two had fought against each other for the first time there, or you did the best to fight, as you were in a trance thanks to her beauty. Maybe it was your biggest flaw, and the reason you had never wanted to push through the whole overthrowing the Han dynasty, as there would probably be no other chance to see her again, and you lived for those moments, even if most of the time swords were on each other's throats and spells were casted against her. At the end of the day, with the both of you full of bruises, you turn yourself into a crow and escape from the castle, happy to have seen her once again, and happy to accept a defeat just to try once again. And you had tried many times since then, as your family saw that you were the only one who has been so close to getting the throne back. You had been trying for ten years, or what your family called trying, as you only saw it as an opportunity to see her again.
Maybe that was the reason you kept her for a week, because you knew it was going to be the last time you saw her, as one of you would die by the third moon, and you could only hope it was you. It was clear as glass that if they didn't succeed it was because of what you did, so you would be punished for that failure. You were happy though, as you would have a few days, maybe weeks, if they were imprisoned, until your death. Yet, by the time they left, a strange sense of despair took you over... What if they succeed?
They got into the castle with help, a young guard who had magic helped them, no resistance, no war... Until they needed distraction. The troops attacked while the Shang family was already inside, and the guards scrambled around thinking the enemy was trying to get in, only a few staying with the royal family. It was a matter of time until they got them right where they wanted it.
It didn't matter, in the end, because they had left you thinking you'd be dead sooner or later, as they weren't planning on ever coming back to the castle you were in, if you were honest, you didn't even know how you broke free, the only thing you knew was that you were driven by the need to protect Handong, which you would do. You got to the castle only hours after they did, and you're not sure how you did it, as you were badly injured, but you were back, carrying the sword Handong had carried two weeks ago to get you killed, or to defend herself, you weren't sure. Getting inside the castle was easy, as war was raging both outside and inside, and finding both families was easier, knowing they would be on the throne room. But inside the room, you were about to watch Handong's execution, if it wasn't because you could be faster than that.
Handong was sure her fate was sealed. She was sure she was going to die, and she wouldn't see you again, and she wouldn't get to see you and tell you that she only now realized that she had fallen for you even if she shouldn't, because she was supposed to hate you. She was sure that you would've laughed if you knew, you would've told her that because you had told her that your family was going to try to kill her, it didn't mean that you had feelings for her too. At one moment, she had accepted her death, but the next second... Smoke, and someone suddenly starting to form from that smoke while the sound of a sword clattering was heard.
"I didn't think you'd be giving up so easily, prince. Now pick up your goddamned sword and start fighting back" You said while everyone looked at her without being able to believe it.
Of course, seeing you out of all people, bruised and fighting for her, was a shock even for your family, who wasn't expecting to even see you out of the castle, and you all used that against them. You were still outnumbered, as your whole family has gone that day for the war, and they were quite the number, but you were able to give them some time until the guards, alerted by the sight of you, went into the throne room. Fighting with both magic and swords, you were able to help to reduce their numbers greatly, and while you weren't happy to do that to your family, you knew they would kill you if they had the chance, so you fought back. You fought back, until you had the still alive family on their knees, begging for mercy as they were caught by the royal guards, who's first reaction after the battle was over was to also get you on your knees so you could get shackles on your hands.
"Let her go" Handong was quick to tell the guards, earning a look from everyone. "She fought with us, I think she's redeemed by that, she had the blood of her family on her hands."
Still, the guards didn't move, thinking that she might be under the effects of some spell.
"My daughter has talked, let her go." The queen spoke, earning a nod and your shackles being removed. But not content with that, the queen walked to you, making you close your eyes waiting for something bad to happen to you, but she only smiled at you. "All your crimes will be forgiven, you are given a chance to start again. You choose if we will have to see each other again like this, or if you will do a change for good."
You opened your eyes to look at her, then you looked at Handong, and finally looked down. You knew that you could still fight for what was rightfully yours, but seeing the blood spilled, and knowing that you caused it for years... Maybe it was time to retire.
"I only seek to keep the family castle, we won't be seeing each other again, your majesty." You said before being let go by the guards.
"Actually I... I have a preposition to make, to Y/N. I wish to speak alone with her."
Everyone looked at her, both surprised and confused, yet she didn't care about it, as she grabbed your hand and walked away from everyone as if they weren't in the middle of war. But war was subsiding, there was no war inside the castle, and all the injured man was taken to the infirmary and death people was being taken to the crypts. But you and her found your way to the library, where she made you sit down.
"I think an alliance would be the best we can do. If it's not you, someone else will be leading the rebellions, and blood will be shed even if we are not part of it." She quickly said, looking for the book you gave her. "You are the Queen the rebels want, and I am the Queen other people want, so we should come to a middle ground to ensure this won't happen again."
"Then, go ahead and make a proposal, I am open to accept anything." You said, knowing that her words were true.
"Marry you. By that both the old Shang dynasty and the Han dynasty will be united, bringing both sides to peace. I know that it would be also counterproductive, as we wouldn't be able to have a heir, but we can sort that out, I just think that-"
"Is this the way you have to tell me you're in love with me, Prince Han?" You asked in a teasing tone, wondering if you should accept and pretend to not be in love with her just for the sake of playing with her, or if you should just tell her how you feel. "I'll accept your proposal, whatever it's the case. Under one condition, though."
She watched you get up from your seat, and walk to her, with her hands still on the book.
"And what might be that condition?" Handong asked, not being able to hide the trembling on her voice.
"That you'll love me until the day we die."

The Purple Dragon (1/2)

Being a prince on her kingdom wasn't easy at all for Handong. People doubted her because she was a woman, and because she was still unmarried, which meant there were no heirs in the foreseeable future. But she wasn't in a hurry to be betrothed to someone else, she didn't even care about not having children, she had bigger things on her hands. She had wars, diplomacy with other kingdoms, having to catch dark witches before they tried to do something again, as well as pleasing the peasants and the nobility alike. But most importantly, she had to catch you.
"I do think you should pay more attention to the idea of marrying, Prince Dong. Even more if you go on witch hunting, which is dangerous, and when you go to war, that is also dangerous." Her counselor, the countess Yubin, tried once again to advise, after Handong received another proposal.
"I appreciate the concern but... I'm still young, I want to marry someone because I love them, someone who doesn't see me like a pawn on a game for power." Handong answered, still walking to the throne room.
"Well, you're a prince, and I am profusely sorry if this hurts you, but your whole existence has always been a game for power." Yubin said before sighing. "Listen, don't say yes if you don't want to, but please at least consider it, you're not getting any younger, and the crown needs a heir, and also needs someone by your side, someone who can take care of the kingdom if something happened to you."
She decided to listen this once, just because she was going once again to try to catch you, and Yubin didn't like it when Handong did so. But she needed to catch you, the kingdom wouldn't ever be safe if you kept wandering around freely. You were the strongest witch she had ever encountered, and the worst intentioned too, you wanted nothing but the crown, and you would not stop until you had it... Or you were locked away for good. In some way, she admired your determination, as she had seen the many tricks you had pulled from your neverending magic, and she had seen you almost get what you wanted, only for you to be stopped by Handong herself. If you were good, the prince wouldn't even hesitate to get you in the highest rank of her army, as you seemed to be so clever, but for some reason, you seemed to hate her and her kingdom.
A shame, Handong thought, with your beauty and your abilities, you could be high in the nobility, yet you only wanted the crown. Too bad, as she was the next in line, and her parents were still alive, so you would have to kill her and her parents in case you ever usurped the crown, just to make sure people would think it twice before revolting.
It was dawn when she got out of the palace, with no guards or anything that would get her too much attention, but even without the golden crown on her head, the royal crest etched to her attire, the jewelry and eccentricities of her royal clothes, the stolen red uniform of the castle guard stood on its own, and her face was enough to be recognized everywhere, even if she wasn’t mounting her white horse as she always did when she was seen in public.
She was supposed to go to the borders of the kingdom, close to the shores of the sea, where the dead forest marked the beginning of the wasteland. She had never seen past it, she had never even been close to that, but she had to get to the cave you were, and the only way to do that was to go to the one place inside the kingdom she has never been.
Handong had traveled for two days through towns and cities alike, doing her best to go unnoticed, and she was sure she did, or at least those people were kind enough to not say a thing, she knew she was loved by her kingdom, so they wouldn't do anything to harm her. She went to almost empty places, and even empty ones, not caring if those places weren't as comfortable as others, she had been through worst in wars. The travel was going to end, however, once she captured you, or killed you, whatever you would prefer upon your encounter.
Yet, the journey to the cave was suddenly stopped, as a snake had appeared on the road, and the horse threw her from the saddle before running off somewhere. It could've been a true disaster, if it wasn't because a girl had held her. Handong looked up at her saviour, just to see a girl with long black hair and bangs, with wide eyes starting at her in curiosity, reminding her of the duchess Yoohyeon.
"My lady, what are you doing here? This is no place for a princess to wander around. That path leads to the cave of the dark witch." The mysterious woman said.
Handong looked at her, thinking that said girl was a peasant by her clothes, and her untamed hair. Yet she didn't smell, so she wondered how much of a peasant she was.
"I am on a quest to get the dark witch, I recently caught word of her living on the cave, so I am going..." It was only then that she realized that she lost everything when her horse ran away. "Or I was, I have nothing now. No sword, no gold, no horse... How will I get there? Or go back to the castle?" Handong lamented, getting back on her feet.
"You shall not worry, the village is close to the road, I will buy a sword for you, or get to write a letter to the castle, if that is better to you." The woman said, starting to walk through a small path surrounded by trees. "Come on, prince Han, we better get out of the road, we don't want to risk ourselves with vandals or the dark witch."
"What's your name, kind lady? I shall reward you for your help." Handong said as she followed the woman, happy to find someone so kind in a moment of need.
"Hyunjung, my lady. And there is no bigger reward that seeing you safe, for the kingdom had not seen better days since the Han dynasty was on the throne." The girl said, but Handong never saw how Hyunjung's face turned sour at those words.
"Very well, Hyunjung, I will reward you even if you refuse to receive it. I know it's not easy for peasants to have money, yet you're even offering to get a sword."
Hyunjung chuckled, but the prince didn't didn't understand why, neither had tried to understand. It sounded like one of those chuckles people have when she had something set on her mind, so she ignored it.
"My lady, I think it would be better if you rest for a while until I get everything set for you to go back on your quest, don't you think?" Hyunjung asked, turning to look at the royal behind her.
Handong was about to say no, that she needed to get there before you were informed you were searching for her, but she was suddenly feeling tired, as if all the weight of traveling and not sleeping well had suddenly appeared on her shoulders, making her unable to continue even if she wanted to.
"Oh, prince, look at you, you are unable to carry on like that... Let's get you to my home, you can rest there while I take care of what you shall need." Hyunjung said after not earning a response, looking at the dazed out expression of the prince, as if she was about to pass out of pure exhaustion.
Hyunjung's house was small, almost too small even for a single person, and as it was custom for girls to live with their family until they were married, Handong could only feel pity by the ones living there. As she went in, and saw the kitchen connected to the main room, and two doors at the other side of where she was standing, she realized the house was truly small, and felt guilty of having such a huge castle all to herself, her parents, and thousands of rooms only used when other kings and queens went for diplomacy reasons.
"It is not much, but it is what we can afford. Please go rest to the chambers, or use the bathroom if you will, I'll make you a tea, I'm sure it will help for the soreness of the fall." Hyunjung said while she got to the pile of logs that was the oven.
Handong didn't say anything, but decided to go lay on the bed. She supposed no one was there, if Hyunjung offered it. She found herself laying on the bed not long after, restless despite feeling like she could fall asleep on any second, but even if she tried and closed her eyes, she was unable to sleep, watching Hyunjung get inside the room a few minutes later, with the hot tea on a mug.
"My apologies for the..." The black haired girl grimaced, trying to find the right words. "The prince deserves the best, but you might understand that I was not expec-"
"It's okay, you couldn't know." Handong answered, sitting properly so she could drink de beverage, not thinking about the strange taste it had.
She heard the girl beside her talking to her, but Handong slowly stopped making sense of the words, feeling like she was underwater, and nothing was making sense anymore. Once she finished the tea, the prince searched for Hyunjung's eyes, trying to ask for help as she didn't trusted her own body.
But Hyunjung only put a tender hand on her cheek, as if she was a mother comforting her child. Only when the girl's eyes turned purple was that Handong understood that she was in danger. Purple was the color of your eyes.
"Go to sleep, prince."
Handong woke up from the effects of the potion hours later, with the sun completely set, only the lights of candles illuminating a place that wasn't the small house anymore, but a castle. A few meters in front of her, with a knife and an apple in hand, Hyunjung was sitting on a chair, far too concentrated on cutting the apple, as if she didn't care Handong would ever wake up.
The prince moved then, trying to get to the traitor, only to find that she was chained to the wall by both hands. It was then when Hyunjung looked up, hearing the sound of the shackles move.
"I was starting to think you wouldn't come back to your senses, I should really start labelling my potions. Have you slept well, prince?" Hyunjung asked, getting up from her seat while still cutting the apple. "Do you want a bite? Apples on this part of the kingdom are the best."
"Do you work for the dark witch?" Handong questioned, still trying to get herself free.
"Ah, right, Hyunjung." She said leaving the apple on the chair she had been sitting, before looking at Handong while raising a hand to her own face, muttering something in a language the prince couldn't understand. She moved the hand away, and it was then when a cloud of smoke surrounded Hyunjung just for a second, showing the dark witch herself once the smoke went away. "I am the dark witch, actually."
"Y/N" Handong said surprised.
"The one and only." You answered, sitting back on the chair, going back to the apple, eating a slice of it. "Did you really think I wouldn't know you were coming? Prince Han, you're starting to underestimate me... And look how far it got you."
She hates that you're right, that she should have known better, you had gotten almost too close to see your plans come to fruition, but she had gotten too cozy on the fact that she could win each time you two were fighting, she had forgotten that it was inside the castle, where you were a visitor. But she also forgot her ability to fight back the more she looked at you, now that you weren't Hyunjung. You were dressed in black and purple dress, and a cape wrapped around one of your shoulders; you looked more like royalty, as you always showed yourself when you were claiming the throne.
You were always a sight to see, in Handong's eyes, the most beautiful woman on the kingdom, even with that hint of madness on your eyes that made you look dangerous, yet so alluring... And she was forgetting what was she doing here.
"Let me out! Don't be a coward and fight!" Handong demanded, which made you raise an eyebrow, finding funny to see her like that.
"You wanted to get into the place I supposedly live to kill me, and I am a coward when I retaliate." You chuckled, getting up from your place on the chair once more just to get closer to her, with the knife twirling on her hand. You quickly trapped her between your body and the wall, putting the knife against her throat. "I could kill you right now, I could use you to get to the King and have him handing me over the kingdom... But I will let you go, when you get more tame."
You moved away from her, with her finally breathing after holding her breath for a few seconds. You smirked before turning around, grabbing the chair and moving a hand, all candles being blown out by some unknown force.
"Good night, prince Han." Was the only thing Handong could hear before the night took over the room.
She couldn't sleep that night, neither could the whole week she spent there, barely sleeping, barely eating, barely drinking. And it wasn't because of you, as you had been nothing but good to her, but it was that what worried her, as she was expecting you to do some trick, but you didn't. You gave her her own chamber, of course closing it each night so she wouldn't escape, and you fed her, bathed her, and even gave her new clothes, clothes that would fit her, but it all made her more suspicious.
And it wasn't until one dinner, while the sun was setting, that she asked about it.
"I told you, I have no plan to kill you," you explained while you were feeding her with pork. "But I will only talk when the time is right."
"Will there ever be a good time?" She asked, afraid of what could happen if she asked the wrong question. After all, she still had shackles on her wrists.
But you looked at her with the same fear she had asked, as if you were suddenly realizing something crucial.
"You're right... I've been keeping you all this time for nothing, you didn't try to do anything since the beginning. I guess I've kinda grown fond of company, even if it's the company of usurpers." You said, and your tone showed the whirlwind of emotions inside. "I won't dely it any longer then." You said leaving the food on its tray.
She looked at you, for the first time not feeling anger, and she realized she had never felt anger once in the seven days she had been there, which worried her just as it worried you to discover that you didn't hate her company when she wasn't trying to kill you.
"Your family is illegitimate to the throne. It belongs rightfully to another dynasty, the Shang dynasty... My family. We've been trying for a long time to get back on the throne, a throne that saw everyone as equals, those with magic and those who don't posseses it, which is the reason why the kingdom has seen better times. Less revolts, less dark magic, less chaos... But it doesn't matter." You started, quickly getting up from your seat, and walking to the shelves far into the dining room. "My family is planning an assassination, you and your family death by the end of the third moon, but I know you and your parents are innocent, you three had been fed lies, as so had been for a century. I wish no death, not yours at least. The only way to prevent it is to prepare you and your family. Prevent everyone if needed." You explained, and even though Handong wasn't sure on trusting you, the urgency on your voice made her think that you were probably being honest. "I know you don't believe me, but the records have been passed in my family, records we had to steal in fear of being burned."
You took a book from the shelf and put it on the table in front of her. The words on the cover were erased, so Handong wouldn't be able to tell what was inside until she opened it.
"I don't want this war any more than you, even if I did kill your people, I had only been seeking freedom to be able to use the gift I've been given from the gods above. Now that I know the truth, I only want you to know the truth and save yourself."
You grabbed her shackles and unlocked them, allowing her to be finally free. She could kill you right there, or run, you didn't know, yet you trusted her, and there was something about you trusting her that made her heart skip a beat from it. You put a hand on her cheek as you had done that day on the town, and she saw your eyes glow purple once again, even though the pain they showed. She knew what was was coming, and she wanted to stop you, though your words went faster than she could have stopped you.
"Go to sleep, prince."
The next day, she woke up at the sound of troops, people getting inside the castle, to the chamber you had given to her, and before she could process anything, the commander Siyeon bursted through the doors.
"Oh thank Gods you're fine, that peasant hadn't lied." Siyeon sighed in happiness. "Let's go, prince, we have to get back to the castle as soon as possible, we don't want to encounter dark witches, and we've been lucky enough to not encounter any."
Handong quickly got up, finding the book you had given her the night before, and held onto it.
"The peasant? Who was the peasant?" Handong asked, confused. How could a peasant know all this time know she was with the dark witch and not do anything? Was she working with the dark witch? What was going on?
"A beautiful girl, Hyunjung was her name... You should have seen her, prince, she looked a lot like Yoohyeon."
Oh
"We shall go, commander, let's not keep ourselves entertained." Handong said, not wanting to mull on those feelings she had at the mention of you. "Plus you have someone waiting at home, I don't think you need the word spreading around that you are seeing other girls."
Siyeon laughed but didn't say anything else, something Handong was grateful for.
Outside, a convoy of horses and a small, modest carriage was waiting for her, and all Handong needed was a look at the commander so she would start explaining.
"The convoy was patrolling, after you didn't come back, your parents sent for everyone to search for you. And the carriage is the best we could get for you when we were notified of you being here." Siyeon said, earning a nod from Handong.
"It's okay, let's go, I don't want to worry my parents any more than they are."
The commander opened the door, and Handong got inside the carriage. It wasn't comfortable as she was used to, but it didn't matter anymore, she was going home, and it was a that mattered. Yet a part of her felt heavy while looking at the old, ruined castle, with black banners with a purple dragon on it, torn apart by the gods knew what. The color purple reminded her of you, and it made her feel even worse, as if she shouldn't be leaving, as if she should be by your side. And that thought immediately drawn her back to the book on her hands, which she opened, finding a note on the first page.
Find the truth, save yourself, don't forget me. -Y/N

Oh, great start, you get me rambling about the Prince Handong au!
So, the Director's cut from this is not exactly about a certain part of it, but more about the first part as it came to be. My original inspiration for that, mostly the kidnapping part and how did the reader get Handong was based on an episode of something I watched as a kid, called Merlin, where the villain (Which I also used as inspiration for the character of the reader) does something similar to the Queen on a chapter where I decided to ignore canon and believe they'd end up together instead.
But the more I advanced on it, I realized that the problem with them both could end with one of them killed if the reader didn't have a good reason to do it (and when I say a good reason, I mean the reader is trying to do good in the wrong way) so I didn't quite ditched the idea of a villain, but more like, the end of the enmity between them. Of course there is a draft in process where I focus more in them as villains, on how they do end up wanting to both kiss each other and kill each other, but it's barely started.
