About last night - 2011 Alvaro Palacios Les Terrasses Velles Vinyes Priorat. Terrasses is sourced from many of the region’s steepest and oldest vineyards—many of them north-facing to avoid the intense afternoon sun.

A 50-50 blend of Garnacha and Cariñena, the 2011 is in a spot for immediate enjoyment with velvety tannins, port like aromatics and wonderful integration of stewed red cherry, cola and herbal licorice notes. Outstanding for an entry level Priorat that shows its ability to age.

This weekend, I had the amazing pleasure to meet with and share a glass of wine with a great friend and current beverage manager at Jaleo in DC, Ramón Testa-Soto. The very unique wine: Mas Martinet Els Escurçons 2018 100% Grenache from the village of Gratallops in Priorat, Spain. Elegant and fresh, showing bright fruit and pronounced mineral quality. Fermented in amphorae, only 3,465 bottles, 40 magnums and some larger formats were bottled in November 2019…. Still young! Outro BELÍSSIMO vinho degustado no último final de semana com os amigos! 🇪🇸 Este é o magnífico “Salmos 2016” da @FamiliaTorres1870 @FamiliaTorresWines — um vinhaço da DOCa Priorat, na Catalunha (nordeste da Espanha) — corte de Cariñena, Garnacha e Syrah com maturação em barricas de carvalho francês por 14 meses. 🍷 Na taça, cor rubi de média intensidade. Aroma de frutas vermelhas maduras, um leve floral, ervas aromáticas, alcaçuz, madeira discreta e um toque terroso. Na boca tem corpo médio, acidez média+ e taninos médios+, de excelente qualidade. Persistência moderada. 📝 Que espetáculo! Vinho potente e estruturado, com fruta gostosa e muito frescor. Todo equilibrado e sem arestas! Priorat area. Camp de Tarragona, Catalonia.

Priorat is a rural area located in the prelitoral mountain range. Most of its economy depends on agriculture, mostly on the vineyards and hazelnut fields, followed by olive and almond tree fields. The vineyards produce the grapes used to make wine with the DOQ (Qualified Protected Denomination of Origin) Priorat, which nowadays are sold around the world.

The villages pictured in this post are Torroja, Poboleda, Porrera, Gratallops and Escaladei.
