The Canopy: Michelin headquarter's renovated reception area

Implanted on the Carmes site of Clermont-Ferrand since the company’s inception in the late 19th century, Michelin’s Canopy acquired its status as the company's headquarters in the 2000s. The project, delivered in 2021, and carried out in partnership between Encore Heureux Architectes, Construire, and Base, aims to embody the image of the group in a welcoming, unique, and cohesive space while inserting itself in an emblematic public square. The headquarters’ innovative new reception area symbolizes Michelin’s reinvention, conceived to face 21st-century challenges head-on; a design and operation that were conceptualized from a circular economy perspective, mindful of environmental impacts.

“For 130 years, Michelin has reinvented itself time and time again to adapt to its environment. Today, the company is proud to inaugurate its renovated headquarters reception area,” explains Florent Menegaux, President of the Michelin Group. “The historic manufacturing headquarters - the very same place in which our small rubber bullet company was founded in 1889 - needed a new setting to project Michelin into the future.”

A new identity

To respond to Michelin’s wish of renewing itself without erasing its past, the project’s committed position is to offer an extension of the current headquarters over two levels. The extension is provided with an energetic new façade that seeks to appreciate its historic structure. The new project connects the current buildings, while simultaneously embodying a reception area and the group’s main entrance. It also acts as a permeable interface between the company’s private spaces and the public square, the latter of which was also renovated in a development plan conducted by the city and Michelin Group. From outline to delivery, the conception of the architectural program, and the project’s design, unfolded within the remit of an architectural consulting period. This method of continuous presence and on-site follow-up allowed for a greater understanding of the group’s identity while introducing a mindful practice that recognized the residents’ needs and adapted the program accordingly.

A simple and fundamental idea permeated the overall project suggested by Encore Heureux: “Bringing a potential vision to life for such an emblematic company was a challenge. The headquarters’ future could only be decided upon in collaboration with the company and within the company itself," explains Nicola Delon, founding partner of Encore Heureux. “This idea went hand in hand through an architectural consulting period with a studio set up at the heart of the company. Dialogue and workshops with Michelin teams truly became a cornerstone of the design process behind the transformative headquarters program."

A multi-faceted and inventive program

The main challenge the project addressed was that of connecting heterogeneous spaces between themselves in a consistent union intended to receive thousands of visitors daily. The tropical glasshouse, initiated by Edouard Michelin on the plaza in the early 2000s, held an uncertain future; it was preserved in the architectural program and integrated into the visitor’s experience. The glasshouse features the logo, acting as a symbol of the group’s values of transparency and openness towards the city and the world.

Also Read: Easy Guide To Choose A Color Palette For Your Space The tree-lined plaza extends to the edges of Carmes square, provided with furniture, greenery, and water displays to ensure freshness in the summertime. The Carmes site, historically reserved for Michelin employees, now offers public access. It features versatile exhibition spaces, a store, the glasshouse museum, and the welcoming Café Equateur. Working areas are adapted to new jobs and more collaborative working methods, and the order of the architectural program evolves to lead visitors from the public area to the company’s private spaces.

A design anchored in contemporary challenges

The Canopy is more than a reception building. Its structure responds to two primary challenges: transparency and proximity on the one hand, and a low carbon footprint on the other. The choice of transparency is embodied by the vast glass façade, sheltered from the sun by the wooden awnings that cover its 160-meter length, which provides the new headquarters with its unique identity. Curves are prevalent in architectural design and furniture, mirroring those of Michelin’s tires. Consumption of cement was extremely limited, in favour of sustainably-sourced, repurposed, and local materials. Particular attention was attached to the local area, and thus an overwhelming majority of companies that worked on the construction are local. The use of regional materials was a common goal that aimed to implement simple constructive principles without compromising the site’s industrial nature, such as the use of steel for the structure, or the decision to make the grid and frames visible.

English plastic recycling plants make clean diesel and naphtha

Clean Planet Energy[1] is going to build ten advanced factories in England, where plastic waste that is difficult to recycle will be converted into clean diesel for trucks and machines and circular naphtha to make new plastic.

The first of these so-called ecoPlants is already under construction in Teesside[2], in North East England. To finance that plant and the next nine, the company has entered into a joint venture with private equity firm Crossroads Real Estate[3]. In total, an investment of GBP 400 million is required.

75 percent less diesel emissions

With the construction of the recycling plants, the companies want to tackle the plastic waste crisis together. The ecoPlants process non-recyclable and difficult-to-recycle plastic waste that would otherwise be landfilled, something that is prohibited in the Netherlands but still happens in England. Each factory can process 20,000 tons of plastic waste per year. This is converted into ultra-low sulphur fuels that can replace fossil diesel for trucks or heavy machinery. That can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 75 percent compared to using traditional diesel, the companies say.

200,000 tons of plastic recycled

Circular naphtha can also be made from it, the basic raw material from which the chemical industry makes plastic. By using this naphtha for new plastic, refineries no longer need to use fossil raw materials such as petroleum.

When all the factories of the joint venture will be actually built, 200,000 tons of plastic waste per year can be reused. Sites have already been designated in Lincolnshire, Gloucestershire, Lancashire and South Wales. More locations will be selected in the coming months.

2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste in UK

According to the latest data from 2021, the United Kingdom will produce more than 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste per year. Only 12 percent of household waste is recycled. More than 60 percent of waste is difficult to recycle, according to a report[4] released this month by the House of Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee (EFRA). The British Parliament is therefore considering a ban on exporting plastic waste in 2027 to reduce waste and encourage recycling. Clean Planet Energy[5] and Crossroads Real Estate[6] want to contribute to this and reduce the mountain of waste that ends up in landfills in the UK, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by offering low-carbon alternatives.

Ecological impact

David Gillerman, founder and CEO of Crossroads Real Estate, invests primarily in green opportunities and projects that have an impact. “The negative impact of plastic waste on our environment, plus the challenges we face due to excessive carbon emissions, made the joint venture with Clean Planet Energy a very compelling opportunity. With this investment, we have the opportunity to have a significant environmental and social impact in the UK,” he said.

Less waste in landfill

Bertie Stephens, group CEO of Clean Planet Energy, wants to convert and reuse even 1 million tons of non-recyclable plastic waste in the long term. “We are now contacting local authorities and private partners in the UK who could benefit from a reduction in plastic waste going to their landfill,” he says. Earlier this year, the company announced a partnership with BP to market the circular products of its ecoPlants. The new factories will also create 750 new jobs.

In her sadly unoriginal attempt to convince the general public that pandemic response equated to the genocide of some six million Jewish men, women, and children, the owner of a Nashville hat company posted a photo of herself on Instagram wearing a yellow patch similar to the Star of David with the phrase "NOT VACCINATED" on it. That owner, Gigi Gaskins of the company HatWrks, then defended the post in the kind of rant only a person of privilege could produce. In the Instagram post Gaskins wrote: "people are so outraged by my post? but are you outraged with the tyranny the world is experiencing? if you don't understand what is happening, that is on you, not me. i pay much more respect to history by standing up with the fallen than offering silence & compliance. that is the worse crime. it was then & is now. i will delete your disgust and hope you put it where it belongs."

Well, distributers of HatWrks apparently are putting the company’s products in the same circular filing system Gaskins referenced. John B. Stetson, a western apparel company, announced on social media Sunday that the brand and its distribution partners are ceasing all sales of HatWrks products.

"As a result of the offensive content and opinions shared by HatWrks in Nashville, Stetson and our distribution partners will cease the sale of all (HatWrks) products. We thank you for your continued support and patience."

The announcement followed a demonstration outside of the HatWrks store on Saturday in which protesters held a sign reading “NO NAZIS IN NASHVILLE!” Social media criticism started even earlier. Ivo Daalder, a former U.S. ambassador to NATO, tweeted on Friday: “As a young schoolgirl in Holland, my mother was forced to wear a yellow star by the Nazis to identify her as a Jew. It’s beyond grotesque to sell this evil symbol to proclaim one [is] not vaccinated. Where does this end?” Actor W Earl Brown said in his tweet on Friday: “I am ashamed to know that I’ve given these people business in the past; I’ve sent people there. This is vile and repulsive. They trumpet that they’re proud to ‘Stand Up Against Tyranny’. Well, I am proud to say GO (F--K) YOURSELF. I’ll purchase my chapeaus elsewhere.”

Gaskins, who by the way didn’t seem to mind accepting more than $92,000 in Paycheck Protection Program funding intended to aid small businesses affected by the coronavirus pandemic, posted yet another rant to the company Instagram account even after the backlash. (Disclosure: Kos Media received a Paycheck Protection Program loan.)

Gaskins said in her post that had all the markings of a person who had encountered very little actual oppression:

"your children cannot return to school unless you show your papers. you cannot return to university unless you show your papers. you cannot keep your job unless you show your papers. you cannot use public transportation unless you show your papers. you cannot enter government buildings unless you show your papers. you cannot enter private businesses unless you show your papers. you will not be allowed in banks unless you show your papers. you will not be allowed in hospitals unless you show your papers. at the least, all unvaccinated people will be segregated from society, marked & must wear a mask. what comes next ?

this has been the push, that is not fiction. much of this is happening right now. there is a historical parallel to fascism to be drawn. we can only fight back to not relive history.”

It’s funny how threatened profit losses inspire transformation. Gaskins’ Instagram post on Saturday night was a statement of apology. She wrote: “in NO WAY did I intend to trivialize the Star of David or disrespect what happened to millions of people. that is not who i am & what i stand for. my intent was not to exploit or make a profit. my hope was to share my genuine concern & fear, and to do all that i can to make sure that nothing like that ever happens again. i sincerely apologize for any insensitivity.” Twitter users aren’t buying it.

Transforming African economies to sustainable circular models

The impact.

The World Economic Forum is playing a crucial role in spurring Africa’s transformation to a circular economy that delivers economic growth, jobs and positive environmental outcomes.

Conceived by the World Economic Forum and the Government of Rwanda in 2016 and then launched in 2017, The African Circular Economy Alliance (ACEA)[1] is a country-led platform, that aims to lead advocacy projects, undertake policy research and support high-impact circular-economy projects.

Co-chaired by the environment ministers of Rwanda, Nigeria and South Africa, with 10 member countries from across the African continent, the ACEA[2] has given rise to a multi-donor trust fund with initial capital of €4 million. The Africa Circular Economy Support Programme (ACESP) will fund circular economy entrepreneurs and circular economy activities in countries that have joined the alliance.

What’s the opportunity?

In a circular economy, all resources are used to their highest value and reused continuously rather than being thrown away.

The size of the economic opportunity from rethinking how resources are used is vast. For example, there is 100 times more gold in a tonne of smartphones than a tonne of gold ore, but many phones are not properly recycled, wasting these resources. Accenture has valued this global opportunity at $4.5 trillion.

Africa is well placed to profit from this opportunity. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)[3] reports that there are 200 million people aged between 15 and 24 on the continent. This number is expected to double by 2045, providing a potential demographic dividend for fast economic growth if enough jobs are created.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA)[4] calculates that for every 10,000 tonnes of used goods, putting them in landfill would create six jobs, recycling them would create 36 jobs, and reuse and repair could create up to 296.

Our approach.

The ACEA was first conceived in collaboration with the Rwandan Ministry of Environment at the World Economic Forum on Africa in 2016. Rwanda has long been a leader in circular economy and was one of the first countries in the world to ban plastic bags. At the World Economic Forum on Africa in 2017, South Africa and Nigeria joined the alliance as co-chairs and ACEA was born.

The Forum used its multistakeholder platform to bring the parties together and continues to provide financial and in-kind support. However, the ACEA is a country-led programme fully governed by the co-chairs. It is supported by a number of strategic partners including the Forum, the AfDB[5], the Global Environment Facility (GEF)[6], UN Environment Programme (UNEP)[7], the Government of Finland and the Platform for Accelerating the Circular Economy[8], with financial support from the Danish and Finnish governments and the Nordic Council[9].

The ACEA secretariat has already begun researching how circular economy approaches can aid sustainable economic growth across Africa and the findings will be presented to all environment ministers as part of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment in 2021.

How can an organisation get involved?

One ACEA project is a collaboration with the Forum’s Regional Action Group on Africa and the Africa Plastics Recycling Alliance, a coalition which includes Diageo, Unilever, The Coca-Cola Company and Nestlé. This collaboration will spark collaboration between companies and policy-makers working on building a PET bottle-to-bottle recycling industry on the continent, which will reduce waste and also create jobs.
