Lifetime Achievement in Education Leadership: Achyuta Samanta
Having born in Kalarabank, a remote village in the Cuttack district of Odisha, Samanta was one of the six children of an employee at a steel plant. Samanta, along with his siblings experienced acute poverty after his father died in a train accident in 1970. In his interview to EducationWorld that published a cover story on KISS/KIIT in April 2012, Samanta said, “It had become a routine for us in those difficult times to have one square meal in a couple of days. My mother did not have a second saree to change into after having a bath at the village river.”
Tumblr media
Continuing his education at the village school, Samanta went on to earn a scholarship to the SCS College in Puri in 1984. During the course of his study, Dr. Achyuta Samanta also supported himself by delivering private tuitions. His self-studying of 18 hours every day while surviving on Rs. 200 per month, reaped results in 1987 when he got a Masters in Chemistry from the Utkal University. This accomplishment landed him the job of a lecturer at D.K. College in Jaleswar. After contributing to the college for a duration of 4 years from 1987 to 1991, Samanta moved on to Maharishi College, Bhubaneswar. In 1993, despite suffering societal indifference and public ridicule, Samanta started promoting KISS or Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences. Since that time, KISS has successfully graduated 3, 248 Class X and 2, 241 Class XII tribal children, thus transforming Eastern India and more importantly Odisha into one of the fast-track industrial regions and states in India.
Tumblr media
Samanta started promoting KIIT or Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology in 1992 and the university introduced its first undergraduate programme in 1997. Since then, the institute has laid the foundation of 23 professional education schools that offer courses in medical, nursing, dental, law, business management, rural management, fashion, film and media sciences, spiritualism, yoga and bio-technology. Currently, the KIIT boasts of 1, 200 faculty members and 2, 300 support staff offering their services to more than 15, 250 students. The KIIT also features 19 world-class campuses spread over a built-up area of 8 million square feet, covering 350 acres of land across Bhubaneswar.
KIIT ranks among the top 100 non-IIT engineering colleges in India and has contributed 11, 957 graduates, 7, 914 postgraduates and 61 doctorates to the Indian society. KISS that offers free of cost undergraduate and K-XII education to 15, 000 first generation students speaking 30 tribal dialects, is an even greater achievement of Dr. Achyuta Samanta. Featuring a 50 kw solar power unit; fully mechanized kitchen that serves 45, 000 meals every day in a dining hall with a seating capacity of 10, 000 and an RO water filtration system that supplies 100, 000 litres of potable water regularly, KISS is the largest boarding school in the world. It covers a built-up area of 600, 000 square feet with 15, 000 students residing in its 10 dormitories well-equipped with 11, 000 2-tier and 3-tier beds along with 800 toilets and 800 shower-bathrooms.
For such amazing contributions towards the upliftment of Indian education and the tribal children, Dr. Achyuta Samanta has been presented the Lifetime Achievement in Education Leadership 2013 Award by the Board of Directors and Editors of Education World.

Tumblr media
The QS Star Ratings System is the wing of QS Quacquarelli Symonds Ltd., and is considered to be one of the best educational recognition to any institution around the world. KIIT, bagging a straight 5 stars have made it the first college to receive such a remarkable rating in India. No other institution has been able to achieve it. The ratings are based on high quality and an extensive research done by the independent agencies who study various aspects of the institutions they are going to review and rate.
There are 8 major categories on which the ratings depend on. These are Teaching, Employability, Online Learning, Academic Development, Internationalisation, Innovation, Computer Science & Engineering and Inclusiveness. KIIT received 5 stars in four of the categories and 4 stars in the rest. Thus, it's overall average stood at 5 stars, the maximum any institution can be granted with.
KIIT has also achieved a rank of 201+ globally in Times Higher Education Impact Rankings in 2021, a few weeks back. The back-to-back ratings have taken KIIT to one of the top positions in the all time best institutions in India. Odisha to have a Covid19 hospital in each district
New Post has been published on https://apzweb.com/odisha-to-have-a-covid19-hospital-in-each-district/
Odisha to have a Covid19 hospital in each district
Odisha is racing to become the first state in the country to have a dedicated Covid19 healthcare facility in each of its 30 districts with a combined bed strength of 6000. It is expected to announce six new hospitals on Monday.
Less than a month ago, on 27 March Naveen Patnaik’s government signed two MoUs with city based hospitals, one with Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences and one with SUM Medical College for a combined 1000 dedicated beds. In less than ten days both the facilities, albeit set up in existing unused buildings, were declared ready.
State minister for health, Naba Kishore Das expects 36 Covid19 hospitals ready covering every single district before the end of the month. It is important to note that these facilities are being set up largely parallel to existing hospitals.
Patnaik’s government has been working round-the-clock to get the state’s healthcare infrastructure – that under normal circumstances leaves much to be desired – pandemic ready. As of Sunday Odisha had reported 61 positive cases but from just 10 districts. Most of these are from Khurda in which capital city Bhubaneswar is situated.
On Monday, the CM is expected to declare operational six new facilities in Angul, Bargarh, Jagatsinghpur, Nabrangpur and Sundargarh. Union minister for petroleum, Dharmendra Pradhan and the Das will also participate via video conferencing.
“About 20 Covid19 hospitals are already operational and five more are being dedicated tomorrow. By the end of this month we should have a hospital functional in every district,” Das told ET. He stressed on the fact that these would not be mere isolation centres, each district would also have at least 10-20 ventilators and oxygen supply. piped or through cylinders, to ensure treatment of patients with serious respiratory conditions.
Various models have been adapted: public private partnership, upgrading existing district hospitals and in some cases rushing steel companies to deliver on their long-pending commitments. The running of the first two Covid19 hospitals, at SUM and KIIMS, are being funded by Coal India’s Mahanadi Coal Ltd (MCL) and Orissa Mining Corporation respectively.
SUM will manage a 150 bed hospital housed in the newly constructed building of MCL’s Mahanadi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in Talcher. The state miner is also extending its existing facilities at Lakhanpur area in Jharsuguda district.
The district, which is also the health minister’s constituency, has picked an old district headquarter hospital and converted it into a Covid19 hospital. According to reports, Vedanta which has its smelters there, has committed Rs 2 crores towards ventilators and other expenses.
At Kalinganagar in Jajpur, the 150 bed Tata Steel -Medica Hospital is for now a Covid19 hospital. While the steelmaker’s yet to be operationalised hospital at Sitalapalli near Berhampur has been equipped with beds, ICUs and ventilators. Nalco is sponsoring the 200 bed facility in Nabarangpur, Paradip port Trust is pitching in for 100 beds in the port town in Jagatsighpur.
The government’s farsighted move to be ready to tackle a community spread of the outbreak has been widely lauded. However, the challenges of trained manpower, or doctors, and a shortage of PPEs cannot be wished away said healthcare experts, speaking on condition of anonymity. Conscious of the fact, Odisha announced it would enlist final year MBBS students and called for retired doctors to volunteer. Walk-in interviews have added 600 pharmacist, 1000 laboratory technicians, 200 radiographers, 609 nurses. Another 1250 staff nurses for government medical hospital, 108 ayurveda and 66 homeopathy medical officers have been hired on short term basis. Of the 1040 MBBS graduates recently handed appointment letters, 1403 have joined work, said Das.
