This Guide Will Help You Select The Ideal Van-Life Vehicle That Is Right For You
Tumblr media
It's known as "van-life", "overlanding" or whatever you prefer. I've been doing this since the days when it was known simply as "living in your car." Over the course of many years and thousands of miles, I've learned what it takes to find a car you love. If you know what you want to search for, vans, SUVs and pickups can all be modified to fit the road-trip lifestyle.
Your daily life as a van driver will be influenced by the vehicle you choose to convert. The comfort, the volume of cargo you can carry, your day-to-day cost of living, even the likelihood of being pulled up by Karens or police officers--all are affected by your choice of vehicle.
If budget isn't a problem purchasing a van that is ready for life is, of course an easy task. Many companies now provide vans designed for endless road-tripping. But they aren't cheap. Even if they are used, for instance the popular Mercedes Sprinter will run you up to $35,000. Buy new and the sky is the limit.
We're not talking about the pre-made overlanders. Instead, I'm writing to the DIYers out there Many of them are probably working with the confines of a budget. If that's you, then let's get rolling.
Size and shape
The first thing you should consider when attempting to construct a home on wheels is how much area you'll be working with. The more room you have, the more space you'll have. On the other hand If you're living too large, you'll end up spending every penny for gas to transport the huge rig around.
It is important to strike the right equilibrium between how much space you can fit in and how little. While you might want the spacious panel van, you won't need to drive 14 miles per gallon for your car. A hatchback could be too small for long trips than weekenders, so you will need something with more elbow room.
Certain models also offer body shapes that are better to be converted. Certain SUVs may appear spacious initially, but as you begin building, you might discover that awkward angles or a small top can make it difficult to design an ergonomic camper arrangement. The more bigger the box, the better.
This is why I went with a Honda Element. While it's theoretically identical to a Honda CRV and Subaru Forester The Element is a large box when the seats are taken off. It is much more adaptable than other mid-sized SUVs. For the same reason, minivans are seeing a surge in sales to aftermarket. There's plenty of room for your family when you eliminate the child-friendly seats.
The gas mileage
youtube
While the cost of gas is always a major factor, it's now vital in the age of the six-buck-gallons. If you're embracing life on the road and paying your rent (or mortgage, if you're over 50) at the pump. A high MPG can make it impossible to live an ordinary life. It is likely that this is the reason you'll see increasing numbers of people choosing smaller SUVs rather than big vans these days.
Handling and capability
In my set-up, traveled more than 40,000 miles across North America last year. This covered all weather conditions and roads. Off-roading in Moab. Blizzards in Oregon, Idaho. Rural Mexico has bedraggled roads. Numerous rainstorms and hairpin mountain passes have been recorded. One tornado could have been in Colorado.
Overlanding isn't unusual for these kinds of driving situations. There are a lot of van conversions bouncing across the hardtop just outside Vegas, inching their way through a Pendleton snowstorm in winter's chilly temperatures, or attempting mucky dirt roads through the backcountry of Northern California.
In essence, you need the vehicle to be capable of handling the most severe road (or off-road) conditions you're likely to throw at it. The all-wheel drive feature in my Honda Element trim made it an ideal vehicle. Other reliable vehicles that you'll frequently encounter in the van-life scene include the Ford Transit, Subaru Forester, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Toyota 4Runner.
Reliability and the condition
The most obvious reason for looking for a car that's in good condition involves the human desire to ensure that you don't get a car that is broken down in the middle of the road, but an efficient conversion could have more ramifications.
Van-life was a new trend prior to the year 2020. It gained popularity because of the pandemic. Many people were looking for other travel options. Van conversions are now observed everywhere, and a lot of people who are not a fan of vans are fed up with the idea. People (or the police) who may not have been a bit irritated by someone parking on their streets for a night's rest a few years back are now much more likely to get up and make you go.
This has led to the growth of "stealth van-lifing" which is the act of parking your vehicle in a suburban or urban area and not attracting the attention of the locals. There are many techniques one can use to accomplish this, however, it all begins with the appearance of the vehicle.

Cost-effective and Robust Flooring Systems for Delivery Vans
Do you have trouble working with traditional flooring systems in your delivery vans? Unidirectional movement of platters or boxes will be problematic with plywood and steel flooring systems. As a result, many delivery van users look for cost-effective and durable flooring systems to assist them load and unload their pallets or boxes safely.
ALFO Mover is a durable product that provides a professional working atmosphere. You will be able to secure your investment while also providing a safe working environment for your staff and increasing the efficiency of your vans.
In most situations, shelving, workbenches, ladders, and conduit carriers are the primary goals of van upfitting, but it's crucial not to forget the van's flooring.
Factory-direct automobiles, on the other hand, come with bare-metal flooring as standard. Racks and trolleys cannot be attached to them. As a result, if you hit a pothole while driving, you can readily visualize an overturned cart and anything else. It could also result in financial losses.
Tumblr media
Pareto Aluminum Systems LLC introduced the ALFO mover flooring system for pallet transport. With our easy-to-install transfer rollers, our ALFO "Mover" flooring platform solutions can provide them with a stable surface.
These rollers are available in two standard lengths: 128" and 157" and are designed to outlast your vans such as Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter, GM Vans, and Ram Promaster. Each transfer roller can carry 400 pounds, and each pallet can manage 7200 pounds / 3272 kilograms. This roller is made of high-strength manufactured plastic and is both light and sturdy. The integral ball bearings extend the life of the product.
When you choose an ALFO Mover for pallet transport, you can easily move pallets in a simple and convenient way. As a result, physical exertion is reduced and labor efficiency is boosted.

2020 Ford Transit review: A likable high-roof hauler
New Post has been published on https://appradab.com/2020-ford-transit-review-a-likable-high-roof-hauler-3/
2020 Ford Transit review: A likable high-roof hauler
Tumblr media
This Ford Transit comes with the medium-height roof. Believe it or not, there’s an even taller model available.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
You don’t need to pastor a megachurch or run a plumbing-supply company to own a 2020 Ford Transit van. Those are admittedly the sort of customers this vehicle is aimed at, but it’s comfortable and pleasant enough to drive that you might consider one for your small business or your family, especially if you’ve got a large brood or just want a versatile camping rig.
Like
Surprisingly agile handling
Excellent forward visibility
Potent V6 engine
Don’t Like
Awkward pedal placement
Cramped footwells
Booming interior
Ford offers a dizzying array of variants in this Kansas City, Missouri-built vehicle, from cargo- and passenger-specific models, to chassis cab and cutaway variants. Giving customers even more choice, it’s also available with three different roof heights and in a trio of lengths. The Transit pretty much covers the market, meeting the needs of everyone from HVAC service technicians to adventure seekers who want to upfit their Transit to be the ultimate overlanding machine.
My tester is Ford’s new-for-2020 crew-van model, which has both a large cargo area and seating for five people. This van also features a regular-length body and medium-height roof, but trust me, even though it’s the “midsize” offering of the family, it’s plenty big. I can stand up in it without clocking my head on the ceiling, and an air mattress should fit without issue if you dream of owning a 1970s-style custom van. Sure, it’s a bit of a step up to get into this vehicle, but it’s not that bad.
Another welcome addition to the Transit for 2020 is available all-wheel drive, which affects neither the floor nor seat height. The system can send up to 100% of available torque to the front wheels as needed, giving this commercial-grade vehicle plenty of capability. Ford even offers a couple driver-selectable modes, one for mud and ruts as well as another for slippery conditions. Predictably, there’s no sport mode, which is a bummer because I wanted to autocross this Transit. Not only would it turn a few heads snaking around those cones, it might turn in some pretty impressive lap times. Seriously, this van drives that well.
For 2020, the Transit’s base engine is a 3.5-liter gas V6 that delivers 275 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque, pretty feeble figures on paper but that engine moves the Transit with shocking ease, at least when unladen. The new 10-speed automatic transmission and 3.73 limited-slip rear end make the most of every available pony. Quick to rev and unexpectedly smooth, it gives this van plenty of scoot off the line and at highway speeds. The gearbox is plenty responsive, quickly upshifting as you accelerate and easily dropping gears when it’s time to boogie, but I wish it were a touch smoother. Ford’s 10-speed auto-box isn’t always the most refined transmission. For customers who need even more performance, a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 is also offered. It delivers 310 hp and an even 400 lb-ft of torque. Models equipped with that turbocharged engine feature a different grille design for enhanced cooling. The five-cylinder diesel option in previous model years is no longer offered.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Due to the Transit’s van-like proportions, it’s hard to see, let alone access, the engine.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
As for dynamics, this house-size van is rather enjoyable to pilot, with unexpectedly crisp steering. In fact, for my money, it drives better and feels smaller than the Ford Ranger. Yeah, I couldn’t believe it either, but this vehicle feels more buttoned down, responsive and enjoyable than the Blue Oval’s own midsize truck, which can be pretty sloppy and disconnected. Empty, the Transit’s ride quality is also amazingly good, firm and a tiny bit bouncy at times, but nowhere near as harsh as you might expect for something with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 9,070 pounds and a maximum payload capacity of 3,670 pounds. Swing for the fences, and you can get a Transit with a GVWR of 10,360 pounds and with a max payload rating of 4,550 pounds. Interior noise levels are, as expected, somewhat elevated since it’s basically just a giant uninsulated box on wheels. Load this baby up with freight and it should quiet down appreciably.
Like other vehicles with a GVWR exceeding 8,500 pounds, this van is exempt from government fuel-economy ratings. In testing around town and on the highway, I averaged about 16 mpg empty, which is better than I expected. Of course, if you’re hauling anywhere near this van’s limits, expect a lot less.
Perched atop the Transit’s elevated driver’s seat, which is passenger-car comfortable and trimmed in a rugged-feeling fabric, this Ford gives you picture-window forward visibility. The expansive windshield and relatively thin roof pillars make it easy to see where you’re going. Of course, a towering ride height doesn’t hurt, either, allowing you to look down the road over the rooftops of practically every other motorist except long-haul truckers. When it’s time to back this beast up, the sharp reversing camera and large outside mirrors with convex reflectors are surprisingly helpful. A 360-degree camera is not offered.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Transit’s interior is comfortable and highly functional.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
Unfortunately, there is a tradeoff for those superb sight lines. The Transit’s driving position is as awkward as a middle-school dance though not as cumbersome as the Ram ProMaster’s seat, which is much more bus-like. Sitting so far forward means your left foot essentially rests above the wheel. This van’s front footwells are quite narrow as a consequence, and the brake pedal is on a plane far above the accelerator’s, which makes it ankle-twisting to operate. At least the brakes are beautifully weighted, with a nice, firm feel and no grabbiness at all.
As far as storage, let’s just say the Transit has cubbies and cupholders and bins galore. Its interior has no shortage of places to stash things, with large pockets on top of the dashboard and additional nooks down low. There are huge bins above the front seats and more junk-carrying receptacles on the door panels. If you run out of spots to put things in this van, you’re probably an undiagnosed hoarder. The rest of this van’s interior is decidedly workaday, constructed of coarsely grained hard plastic. Easy to clean and surely hard-wearing, but luxurious it is not. Making this blue-collar vehicle a little more refined, the Transit can be had with a power-sliding side door and even swivel seats, more new equipment for 2020. Ford also offers some fresh exterior colors and a 31-gallon fuel tank.
My test Transit arrived fitted with Ford’s Sync 3 infotainment system with navigation and an 8-inch touchscreen, an $810 option. This is one of my preferred multimedia arrays, as it’s easy to navigate, plenty snappy and supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa and even Waze. A multifunction display with a 4-inch screen is standard if you don’t feel like shelling out extra cash.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Really, this high-riding van ain’t too shabby.
Craig Cole/Roadshow
For 2020, a range of new advanced safety features are standard. Every Transit now comes with automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, automatic high beams and even lane-keeping assist. This van doesn’t really wander (at least when there aren’t stiff crosswinds), but that last item is still helpful, gently nudging the Transit toward the center of its lane should you drift too close to one of the lines. Other models come with blind-spot monitoring including trailer coverage and cross-traffic alert. Additional available features include enhanced active park assist, high-intensity discharge headlamps and even adaptive cruise control, which is smooth and attentive even if it doesn’t work in stop-and-go traffic. As for protection, the Transit comes with your standard, three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. The powertrain and safety systems are covered for five years or 60,000 miles, plus you get roadside assistance for the same amount of miles and time. This coverage is exactly the same as you get with a Ram ProMaster, and very similar to the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, though it comes with a five-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
The 2020 Transit seen here stickers for $51,420. That price includes a smattering of useful options and a whopping $1,695 in destination fees. Is this high-riding van for everyone? Of course not. But drivers in need of a rig that can haul vast amounts of cargo or a Sunday school’s worth of kiddies would be wise to consider one. This big boy is comfortable, drives well and is super versatile, especially now that all-wheel drive is available. When it comes to hauling, the 2020 Ford Transit is tough to top.

Purchase A Van For The Camper Conversion (A Beginner's Guide)
Tumblr media
The first step in your dream of owning a house on wheels is purchasing the van's panel to convert your camper. This is not something to undervalue. You'll have a van for many years if you purchase the right vehicle. If you make a purchase that isn't right you could be impacted by the cost of garage repairs and ongoing maintenance.
There's plenty to keep in mind.
The Top Tips for Buying the right used Van
Picking the Right Panel Van
A panel van that is empty is the most popular base vehicle for camper conversions. Once you've got a clear idea of what your conversion ought to be able of, you can begin looking to find the perfect van for your needs.
Here are some items to keep an eye on when purchasing a used panel van.
Are you eager to find your dream car? It's now a matter of finding the closest to a "perfect" vehicle within your budget. Keep in mind that the focus must be on the words, "closest to perfect". Because unless you are buying from a new vehicle, there is typically always going to be a flaw with every van you must be aware of prior to deciding to make a purchase.
To help you make the most of your time For your convenience, the below list of points to be considered. It is ordered alphabetically:
Bodywork
The state of the van's bodywork is usually a sign of its overall condition and the amount of strain it's suffered in the past.
You should take a close look at the van's exterior. Look for any marks or dents that are not professionally repaired.
Verify that the doors function correctly, and that the seals and weatherstrips remain in place. They are fairly inexpensive to purchase, but they will indicate if the previous owner was pleased of their vehicle.
My van was scratchy and was wearing. If the vehicle isn't worth a look from the outside, it shouldn’t be worth stealing. That's my thought. Here's hoping.
Do not buy vehicles that are rusty when you can afford it. To prevent rust spreading If you see obvious rust in the photographs, you'll have to address it once the van has been bought. Although the rust might not be visible immediately bubbles may form before the paintwork is removed. If you're in the vicinity of a van, then take a quick peek to determine if there's much rust on the undercarriage and wheel wells. The less the better and you'll eventually gain a better insight into what is considered to be excessive once you've looked at more and more vans. Rust can be particularly bad for older models of Mercedes Sprinters and Ford Transits.
Mileage
You should select the van with the lowest mileage if you plan to spend a lot of time and money on the building of your vehicle. It will make sure that the van will last for a long period of time. Personally, I was searching for a van that could reach the 100,000-mile milestone. I realized that anything ranging from 40,000 to 140,000 was the ideal range that met my (and other buyers') needs and budget. If you're considering a van, double-check the mileage.
MOT History
The results from any MOT can be found online. As long as you know the vehicle in question's registration number then you can have a look yourself on gov.uk/check-mot-history.
There are any advisories that you may have received during the transaction. Some advisories can be resolved fairly easily, but not all advisories are expensive or potentially dangerous. You should, however, try to buy a vehicle with the least amount of advisories that are passed on as you can. You might be able to request these modifications prior to purchasing the vehicle.
Through this investigation You'll also be able to determine the reliability of the vehicle been over the years. The less information that's been noted on the MOT history, the less issues the van has caused previous owners (and probably you, too, in the near future).
Previous Owners
youtube
You can find information regarding previous owners at the garage or dealership where you purchase any vehicle. This information is important and could help you to make an educated guess about the vehicle's prior use.
If the car is described as "ex-fleet" then you're fortunate. It is a sign that the vehicle was previously owned by a firm and maintained properly. Ex-fleet vehicles are better for conversions into campers. Specialist vehicles like ex-AA and ambulance vans that are ex-issued are worth considering since they nearly always have been taken care of.
If the owner currently cannot determine who they were before, then at the very least, determine what the van's annual mileage has been up until this point. This can be identified with an MOT checker. The average annual mileage is thought to be about 10,000. If the vehicle is driven for more than 25,000 miles per year then this isn't an acceptable option, but rather a potential warning sign.
Service History
A "service history" is typically a paper documenting any maintenance or repair work that has been carried out on the vehicle. It is not illegal to sell or possess an automobile without one. Therefore, many service history books can disappear between owners.
When purchasing a van, it is crucial to confirm that the vehicle has a complete or, at the very least, a partial, service history. If there is no record of the work that's been done, it would be difficult to know how well maintained the vehicle is and what maintenance work might be required in the near future.

7 Reasons Van Shelving Is the Ultimate Van Upfitting Idea
Tumblr media
If you have a commercial van in your fleet, you appreciate how crucial this workhorse is to your business. Whether you are a plumber, electrical contractor, roofer, locksmith, caterer, or a distributor, this van offers versatile and convenient storage.
Most of the newer van models on the market come with ample cargo space to handle all your cargo handling needs.  However, it is not easy to optimize this open space for cargo handling. This is where American van shelving units come in handy. If you are looking for the best outfitting idea for your van, you should start with high-quality van shelving.
This guide explores some of the benefits of installing van shelving on your commercial vehicle.
1. Space Maximization
Some of the most common vans on the road from the Mercedes Sprinter, Nissan NV, Dodge RAM, to the RAM ProMaster come with expanded cargo space. This allows business owners to haul as much cargo as they want. However, using this open space is tricky and inefficient.
It is not easy organizing such open space and you end up wasting a lot of room. By installing the best van shelving on the market, you will maximize the space available and transport more cargo.
Utilizing this storage system frees up more space for cargo storage. The tools that would previously lie loose on the van floor will get organized storage space on the shelves. You will have more room to store larger tools and equipment. This also leaves you room to work in if you wish to convert your van into a mobile office. Your crew will also find space to assemble their tools and check them before taking them out of the van.
2. Enhancing Safety
Safety is a major concern in any working environment and this includes your work van. When you have sharp tools cluttered on the van floor, there’s a greater risk of injury. Such injuries can lead to loss of work hours, and in extreme cases, workplace injury compensation claims.
Van shelving can solve this problem as you will organize all your tools and other items on the shelf system. This reduces the risk of accidents inside your van. Storing your tools on these storage systems can also prevent accidents during transit. Instant breaking might send these tools flying from the cargo area to the driver’s cabin. This can cause injuries or even fatalities.
3. Boosting Productivity
Workers waste a lot of time sorting through messy vans to find specific tools and other items. A disorganized tool affects the workflow of your crew as work has to stop to find some tools. When you outfit your van with neat shelving, this will no longer be a problem.
Your workers can easily find tools from the labeled shelves. This, in turn, boosts efficiency in their work and productivity. You will manage to do more work within a shorter time. Van shelving reduces time wastage and helps your crew work more effectively.
4. Professional Image
The service industry is highly competitive with so many contractors and tradespeople competing in the same area. If you want to stand out from the crowd, you have to go beyond offering the ordinary services. You have to present your business as a professional entity.
Using van shelving is a simple way of showcasing your professionalism to potential clients. If you run a plumbing business, your clients might want to peek inside your van when you visit the site. A cluttered cargo space might discourage them from working with you.
According to the client, a disorganized plumber will most likely offer poor services. O the other hand, if you have outfitted your vehicle with plumbing van shelving, this will send a good first impression. An organized service provider will most likely offer efficient services.
Van shelving promotes a professional image for your business. It might make a big difference between success and failure for your business.
5. Cost Savings
If you rely on your work van for cargo transportation, you need to maximize space available to save on cost of operations. You can buy a smaller van and outfit it with a customized shelving system to handle large volumes of cargo.
There’s no need buying a more expensive large van when you can maximize the cargo room in a smaller vehicle. For a startup, such cost-savings might be all you need to survive the tough initial years.
Many businesses in the service industry fail in the first years due to cash flow issues and you can avoid this through creative thinking. Your small van will handle all your cargo transportation needs and the saved money can go to other business operations such as marketing.
6. Protect your Tools
Work tools are expensive and you should go to extra lengths to protect them. When you leave tools cluttered on the van floor, there’s a high risk of damage to delicate power cutting tools. You can prevent such damage by safely storing them on van shelves.
Installing van shelving will not only enhance safety in your van but also protect your work tools. This also saves you repair costs for such tools or replacement costs.
7. Protect Your Van
Most vans come with a floor mat but it is not the best quality. With time, the sharp tools cluttered on the floor will damage the floor mat and ruin the van floor. These tools might also damage the van roof which necessitates costly repairs. Storing your tools and other cargo o van shelving thus protects your work van and increases its lifespan.
Final Thoughts
Looking for a great van upfit idea? With van shelving, you have a storage system that serves multiple functions. This upfit protects your crew against accidents on the van floor, boosts productivity and gives you the best first impression.  Van shelving also protects your van and saves you a lot of money in the long run. This is the ultimate van upfitting idea. It is a great idea to boost your business and get a competitive edge on the market.

Volkswagen California XXL Concept First Look
Let’s manage expectations right up front for the rabid aficionados of vintage Volkswagen campers—this baby ain’t slated for production, and even if given the green light, it’d be a long shot to be exported to the States—even the state it’s named for. That’s because VW has yet to climb on the Transit/ProMaster/Sprinter bandwagon and homologate the Crafter Transporter commercial van chassis this concept is based on. But the thing is so cool and filled with such clever space utilization features that it captured our attention on the Frankfurt show floor. Note also that this is not a Westfalia product, springing instead from VW’s own internal design department, some members of which must live in tiny apartments and hence be well acquainted with the multipurpose furniture biz, as it’s chockablock with clever touches aimed at doing more with less. Although it’s tiny as a house, it is B-I-G as a vehicle, based on the Crafter lineup’s middle (143.3-inch) wheelbase. Its pano-sunroofed ceiling measures taller than the standard Crafter high-roof, at 114.2 inches. It also features a permanent bump-out at the rear, cantilevering the rear bed about 10 inches beyond the rear bumper (drivers might want to parallel park this one with a spotter). Climb aboard through the sliding side door, and you’re in the kitchen/dinette area, which features a pop-up table that the front seats can swivel around to face. The kitchenette features two 1.8-cubic-foot fridges and gas range burners that recess to be flush when not in use so that the area can be used as a work surface. A spice rack holds jars magnetically to reduce rattles. Dividing the dinette from the bedroom is a clever bathroom with a fold-down sink over a toilet. You enter by pulling the inboard wall out along with its own floor—like a drawer—then sliding a pocket door closed behind you. The whole space becomes a shower if you like, using water heated by an onboard boiler. The big side windows in the back open and offer integrated slide-up screens and slide-down shades. A picnic table folds up and stows in a slot under the dinette floor, sliding out of the step as you enter. Two folding camp chairs stow behind the rear-cargo-compartment hatch. The space inside that hatch is also accessible from under the bed inside. Come bedtime, the missing section of mattress in the back deploys from its stowage spot under the section behind the bathroom to form a bed that measures roughly 6.5 feet by 4 feet. A couple of kids can sleep up above the front seats and dinette area by sliding the back half of the mattress rearward on tracks and installing a small extender that gives one taller kid a bit more headroom or legroom. The main bed here measures just over 5 feet by 4 feet. A decidedly modern touch is the tablet and app control of all the interior ambient lighting (including closing the skylight shades) and the infotainment systems, which include a projector TV in the back bedroom. The California name originated on a line of VW-based, Westfalia-upfitted camper vans starting back in 1988 and continues today on VW-produced campers built off the T5 Multivan platform—itself a descendent of our late, lamented Eurovan. (DaimlerChrysler purchased Westfalia in 2001, marking the beginning of the end for VW-Westfalia campers, and Chrysler wriggled free of Daimler before building the Routan for VW, which might explain why we never saw pop-up camper versions of that van.) Probably about the best we Yanks can hope for is that Mercedes and Westfalia are taking notes and planning to deliver us something equally cool to look at and use based on a Sprinter van. Keep on trucking: Maintaining lawn care fleets
Inspect to protect It’s important to perform regular maintenance checks to keep trucks in tiptop shape. (Photo: Lush Lawn)
Trucks are a major expense for lawn care operators, and many begin each day ensuring their investments are well cared for.
Jason Zielesch, production manager for Lush Lawn in Grand Blanc, Mich., says before technicians leave the lot, the company requires they complete what it calls a “three-minute 360.”
The three-minute 360 is a full inspection of the truck to check fluids, tires and general maintenance items. Technicians handle any minor maintenance in the shop before they head off for the day. The inspection details are kept in an Excel checklist and reviewed regularly.
Lush Lawn is an $8 million company with five locations in southeast Michigan. It provides 70 percent lawn care and 30 percent tree care to a 90 percent residential customer base, and counts 40 trucks in service across all five branches — Ford, Chevy and GMC 3/4- and one-ton pickup trucks as well as RAM ProMaster 3500 vans.
Upfittings and equipment, including spray rigs, are checked and maintained just as often as the trucks, Zielesch says.
The crew checks all hoses and straps for fraying or breaks and the fluids and oils for any motors or pumps on the equipment. Spray tips are checked for clogs and proper flow.
Aside from the daily maintenance check, the company performs routine maintenance every 3,000 miles.
For Lush Lawn’s more extensive truck repairs, the company negotiated an agreement with a national auto shop chain, and all Lush Lawn branches receive the same pricing on repairs and maintenance at each auto shop location.
Even with regular maintenance, lawn care trucks have to be retired at some point. Erik Hutson, branch manager of Lush Lawn’s Grand Blanc location, says vehicles are often phased out around the 10-year mark. After a review of the truck’s maintenance logs, which include tracking the price of ongoing repairs, the company analyzes whether it makes more sense to purchase a new truck.
Protecting the inside and outside
Mark Utendorf, owner of Emerald Lawn Care, says his trucks undergo a biweekly inspection that includes a visual check of the tires, oil level, brake lights, turn signals, undercarriage, warning lights and hitch and rider racks.
Emerald Lawn Care is based in Rolling Meadows, Ill., and primarily provides lawn care services with some perimeter pest and tree and shrub care for a 99 percent residential clientele. The company has 13 employees and runs eight trucks — Chevy 2500s, Chevy 3500s and Ford 250s — which range in year from a 1999 model to a new 2018.
A little more than two years ago, Emerald Lawn Care moved next door to an auto shop, which it uses for all truck repairs the firm can’t handle in-house.
As for the exterior of the truck fleet, Emerald Lawn Care’s pickup trucks feature a spreader rack on the front, so technicians can easily move a push spreader on and off the vehicle without having to store them in the back of a truck and maneuver them around the Permagreen equipment. This setup does have some drawbacks, however.
With a spreader rack on the front, fertilizer prills may blow out of the hopper and end up wedged in the trucks’ radiators, he says. His crews back flush any fertilizer out of the radiators with a regular hose — not a power washer.
Loose fertilizer is not permitted anywhere in trucks, and if there is a fertilizer spill, the truck is emptied, blown off and washed immediately.
Emerald Lawn Care also applies Boeshield, a specialty lubricant created by aerospace builder The Boeing Co., to trucks to offer another layer of protection.
“We put it on all the body panels to offset any potential damage from fertilizer,” Utendorf says. “And if we think that it needs it, we’ll undercoat trucks.”
