Attack on downtown beauty
Brick and cobblestone medallion on Westminster Street, in Providence. (GoLocalProv.com)
Providence Mayor Smiley has smudged a frown on the beauty of downtown. He has ordered that the decorative brick and stonework at the intersection of Westminster and Dorrance streets. This is the intersection, part of former Mayor Paolino’s excellent redesign of the old “Westminster Mall” as a street in the…

Lovecraft loved watching sunsets. The windows of his final residence faced westward and would have afforded him a beautiful view of the city he loved so dearly. As the last rays of the sun coloured the skies of Providence, RI, the city of his birth, the end was drawing near. Lovecraft died in March, 1937. Because of his extreme allergy to cold we can imagine him bundled in a chair viewing nature's dying magnificence through the long New England winter even as he himself was dying. It is worth speculating that Lovecraft saw all life, human and cosmic, in decline. A final sunset is even now flaming forth in a final last gasp, a final cry of pitiful torment as all creation descends into eternal and abysmal darkness! (Exhibit 207)

Now for the last comic convention I tabled at in 2022, the finale, Rhode Island Comic Con! It happened on a weirdly warm weekend for November. I didn’t need my jacket most of the time. Chris and I even ate outside one night, without a heater or anything! By contrast, it was freezing in the convention center. I kept my jacket on 90% of the time.
Traveling to Providence is always fun. When not at Rhode Island Comic Con, I went to a large arcade bar and sang karaoke at a karaoke club! Chris and I ate at a weird restaurant in North Providence called Camp Nowhere, where everything on the menu was $4 or less. These weren’t true small plates, which almost always cost more than $4. They were just smaller servings of normal “barbeque” type food. E.g. for $3 or $4, you could order one slider-sized hamburger. To make a meal, you’d have to order at least two of these and an also small side. Even the alcohol was priced this way, and the size of the mixed drinks for $4 was quite reasonable. It was a perfect restaurant for that night, since directly before I had an early dessert and drink at an excellent bakery in downtown Providence called Sin (which unfortunately does not do the Seven Deadly Sins-themed drink and dessert pairings anymore.)
