Customer service is a choice
Customer service is a choice https://seths.blog/2024/01/customer-service-is-a-choice/ It’s either part of your strategy or you’re paying for your mistake. 800 numbers changed the way large brands dealt with the public. Instantly, and for free, a consumer could contact a company about a product or service and they would work to make it right. It was more than fodder for an infinite number of New Yorker cartoons. Some brands made it a part of their marketing strategy (Zappos, for example) while others saw it as a bottomless expense and did as little as they could (Google, for one.) The successful companies in the no-support group spent the money they saved on user experience, working hard to make it so you’d never need to call them. Both are defensible choices. Great customer service is expensive, but it’s also free. It’s free because delighting a customer who has an issue is the single cheapest way to not only keep that customer, but have them spread the word. Building a new car company is difficult and expensive. Rivian has adopted the strategy of being the most honest, diligent and responsible car company in history. They answer the phone in one ring, a helpful person actually helps, and they work overtime to make things right. If you meet someone with a Rivian, just ask them. A much smaller company, Discourse, supports their software with a community approach that’s human, interactive and effective. It’s not as expensive as having a car towed away, but it supports customer loyalty and decent margins. Delightfully, great companies like PSAudio are following their lead, using Discourse to help customers become connected and find support. It provides a layer of insulation that other companies struggle to keep up with. On the other hand, Firstbase, a new company aiming to service founders of new companies, has completely lost their way. They take as long as five business days to respond to a query, their UX is terrible and they generally don’t care, or at least act like they don’t. Unlike Google, who decided to build a customer-facing product that didn’t need support, Firstbase is simply in cost-cutting mode. It’s broken and they know it. You can’t cost cut your way to greatness. Consumers have been trained to expect that companies will engage. Even if you’re a soloist, the availability of instant communication means that if you choose to do a lousy job on support, you’re going to be judged accordingly.

Nick Drake "Bryter Layter" LP. This will be the first LP I listen to on the Sprout with my trusty, but ugly as sin Koss Pro 4AA headphones. While I haven't been an active headphone user since my high school days, awhile ago I realized I should have a decent pair of stereo headphones to have available. The reason I mention this is because of the many reviews I've read about the Sprout over the past 2 years, almost all mention how good the thing sounds with headphones. With that said, I figured I'd try my favorite Nick Drake album. It is nicely recorded, has strings on some songs, jazzy tunes, and sparce singer-songwriter compositions as well. Specifically, I was really listening carefully on "One of These Things First", the title track, and my all time favorite Drake song, "Northern Sky". While I can't say it was like hearing the songs again for the first time, I doubt I've ever heard them sound better. So that's pretty cool. The song "Fly" stood out as the most spacious and different sounding than on other mediums I have enjoyed this album on over the years. If I listen to another album tonight, it'll be a rocker, for headphone comparative purposes. #LP #Vinyl #Records #NickDrake #BryterLayter #Folk #PSAudio #Sprout #Headphones #KossPro4AA

More wires stuff.
I found some cool blah blah on the PSaudio website. The boss / owner has a Vlog where he riffs on things he cares about. He does care which is why he does what he does. PSaudio makes some nice stuff. They are one of the builders in the thrall of ICE Power Class D. Interesting that they feed the ICEpower module in some of their amplifiers through a thing they built to "voice" the sound of the unit. So much for straight wire with gain.
Anyway one of the things he talked about in a Vlog was interconnects. Those are the little wires run between components as from preamp to power amp or from CD player to preamp. He very honestly and clearly described how his team used to make them with thin wires and masking tape. These things were really good he says. For fun I ordered up some wire and RCA connectors to play with that. Easy and cheap.
You may recall if you looked at some my old stuff I am ambivalent about wires and interconnects. Here is this story again, maybe the third time.
Years ago I read in a high end mag about this guy listening to a CD. He was comparing interconnect wires and only with this specific brand could he hear this very subtle sound on this specific CD. He took that as proof that that wire was superior. It was freaking expensive too. His CD player and other stuff was expensive high end gear. My problem is I had that CD. I could hear that sound. My CD player and its wires and the preamp it was plugged into was less expensive than this wire. So it was not the wire was it? He was right and wrong. So many things like that in high end audiophile stuff.
I believe he heard these things but he was wrong about the wire. What goes on here? Time for some Science.
Wires of any description have very basic physical properties. The famous electrical ones are resistance, inductance, and capacitance. Resistance is simply the resistance of flow of electrons just like a pipe flowing with water. Bigger pipe less resistance. It is not that significant unless you have really thin crap wire and bad connections.
Other things like cryogenic crystals and skin effect are snake oil and make no difference at audio frequencies. Maybe microwave, but that is truly weird stuff.
Inductance is the effect of an electric current producing a magnetic field that can interact with another magnetic field and the current it was caused by. Physics aside it is a thing that as frequencies go up it creates more resistance. It has no effect on constant direct current flow.
Capacitance is the effect of the electric charge field interacting between two conductive surfaces. DC current cannot pass a working capacitor it has infinite resistance to DC. As frequencies increase resistance drops. That is the opposite of an inductor.
My big black amplifier has a capacitor in the front of the signal path to block DC from any source and only allow the signal through. That is a good thing for stopping DC. It is impure from the philosophy of direct coupling. It also has an inductor at the output. That is to stop radio frequency from passing out (or back in) as it is invisible as far as audio goes, but is a wall against ultrasonic and radio signals which have no business in an audio system.
High end designs often avoid those things as they are impure. Both affect the bandwidth of the device and limit it. My black box has a bandwidth of from 8 Hz to 35 kHz at one db down. 8 Hz is not Bass it is a weather front. 35 kHz only interests bats and dolphins. No human can hear that and that is only one FN db down.
So what if you left those out like all the really expensive stuff does. Well they can then get unstable. That means the device can oscillate or vibrate electrically at who knows what frequency depending on to what and how you hook it up. The wires in and out may form a resonating network with the device and well bad things can happen. Unshielded wires will pick up RFI at either end of the device. The least offensive thing is it may alter the sound by taking power away from part of the audio band. The most is melting of parts and smoking of others.
If you have a stable unit then interconnects are less an issue.
The real question is your equipment stable or not? My ARC SP 14 is direct coupled (no input capacitors) in the phono section. It has capacitors to block DC in the line level going in and out. That makes sense as there are some freaking high voltages in the power supply rail. The SP14 may have an issue with the TT leads, or the phono cartridge, but that is even more complicated. Could it have a bad match up say in the CD player? Maybe there could be a high frequency oscillation. If the interconnects have an unlucky match it will have an effect.
So it is not one set of wires being better, it is one set having a better match of parameters for a given piece of equipment. What works for me may not work for you. Visa Versa of course.
I have no patience for snake oil stuff. If there is a difference I want to know why. So I am going to play with this masking tape thing that reduces inductance and capacitance by keeping the wires farther apart. I may also braid some as that has the conductors crossing at almost right angles which also stops inductance and confuses capacitance. It may make my equipment happier and sound better and its cheap!
Oh and I also listen to music.

The late Arnie Nudell's final prototype. Nudell was the founder of both Infinity Systems and Genesis Technologies. Dual servo-controlled woofers, mid-bass coupler, ribbon line source for mids, and line source of spiral ribbon tweeters for the highs. A wonderfully palpable yet rustic and sound. It was a true honor to be able to hear his final reference system. #loudspeakers #prototype #highendaudio #allaboutthemusic #ribbontweeters #psaudio (at Rocky Mountain Audio Fest) https://www.instagram.com/p/BpSjxD6HR2r/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=lcirrh5668g1
