Dr. Herbert E. Lipzditsch & Maxine Jichael

Lore: Dr. Lipzditsch used to be a famed plastic surgeon, but he disappeared out of the blue one day for unknown reasons. Rumours swirled about the incident — there had been an accident — Lipzditsch lost his medical license — the mafia, or aliens were involved— but progress was never made towards finding the truth, and eventually the whole thing blew over. Meanwhile, Dr. Lipzditsch was far away, starting a new life and a new career as a small town mortician. Though at first he did his duty making the corpses look peaceful and presentable, Lipzditsch’s curiosity got the better of him and he began researching more in-depth ways of giving them the appearance of life… or more than that, even. Eventually, a team of agents tracked him to his new location, and though initially cornered, Lipzditsch became delighted when it turned out the men were there with a request… a request that involved the recently deceased pop idol, Maxine Jichael. Maxine was a talented singer-songwriter who flew to the top of the charts soon after she began her career. Known for being as humble as she was creative, she quickly gained an extremely dedicated fan base who hung on her every breath. Even after they stopped. During a live show, a terrible accident occurred and Maxine was horrifically crushed by a falling piece of stage equipment. The audience, and indeed the world was inconsolable. But Maxine was far too valuable to be laid to rest quite yet, and her record company was happy to provide a certain ex—plastic surgeon plenty of resources if it meant getting their star back from the grave.

Herbert E. Lipzditsch

Herb’s two songs are Modify and Lifetime Achievement Award, the former of which is set during his time as a plastic surgeon.

Herb is one of three characters within this universe that have a greenish tint to their skin, the others being his cousin Oliver Stuf (of Market Land) and the unrelated travelling children’s entertainer Bartholomew Zew (of Gadzooks, Pumpkin Pie, The Saga of You: Confused Destroyer of Worlds, The Ultimate Showdown, Jaws, etc).

Herb is named for Herbert West (the lead character of the film Re-Animator) and Ernest Menville (the tritagonist of the film Death Becomes Her). He’s also somewhat based on J.S. Steinman (from Bioshock). ‘Lipzditsch’ was me trying to cram as many consonants as i could into one German-sounding name for the fun of it. If you’re wondering, it’s pronounced ‘lips stitch’ (with a slight z to the ‘s’)

like many of these characters, Lipzditsch is the ‘affably evil’ variety of mad doctor; he’s a genuinely friendly sort of person, but his sense of ethics and morality leave much to be desired.

His cohort of sinister nurses are the CEOR staff, a number of record execs who follow him around and hold things for him while he does the real work. Their uniform looks something like a cross between a business suit and scrubs.

Maxine Jichael

Poor Maxine doesn't come back quite right and has to be reanimated several times; she is the source of the freaky laboured breathing in LTAA.

Moves stiffly and sluggishly like a zombie most of the time.

Her most devastating fatal injuries were to her hands and throat, hence the emphasis on them.

Based on a combination of the two artists mentioned in the song, Katy Perry and Michael Jackson.

in case it isn’t obvious, Maxine’s name is derived from a spoonerism of Michael Jackson (‘Jichael Mackson’). Accordingly, her last name rhymes with Michael, if the spelling is throwing you off.

2023 Cookie of the Year: Kingdom Edition

☁️ Heya! I’m sure you got the note my colleague Kit sent you and pinned at the top of the blog. She’ll be working her way into being part of our main contributor panel over the next couple months just as I and Strawberry Crepe Cookie have, which is how we ended up becoming frequent contributors on this blog. How she got into this is a long story, and one for another time. But moving on to the main topic here, it’s time to vote for 2023’s Cookie of the Year! In case you missed it last year like Vanilla Meringue Cookie (Your ACTUAL Editor, who also goes by Meringue) did, here’s how it works:

Every playable Cookie (minus the collaboration Cookies including Sonic, Tails, and BTS) in CRK will be split into a tournament bracket full of 1v1 matchups

In each matchup, pick the one you like more. There WILL be matchups where your vote will force you to choose favorites OVER your favorites.

Finalists will receive special prizes of all kinds which we don’t know yet!

Ahh, autumn. The days are getting shorter, the winds colder, and smell of pumpkin spice is in the air. Do you know what that means?

That's right! Awards season is just around the corner!

Now is the time of year that industry leaders will be deciding on the nominations for The Game Awards, the biggest video game ceremony in North America. I've created a little slide show to appeal to the jury and present them with the positives of The Stanley Parable, in the hopes that they will nominate it in each of the categories for which it is eligible. Am I being self-aggrandizing? Yes, I am, and I'm not ashamed of it. When it comes to your own artwork, you can't afford to be humble. Toot your own horn. Rest on your laurels. Be your own biggest fan, for if you don't, who will? You can't just hope other people will send praises your way, you have to put yourself out there and stand proud!

While I do the bulk of the work, the story would be nothing without its main character. Stanley continues to make choices that challenge and redefine the notion of what a video game narrative can be. There is something deeply wrong with him and that should be celebrated. 

The Adventure Line™ as Itself™

A minor role, but one worth noting. The Line™ once again delivered a stunning performance, this time opposite newcomer The Bucket Destroyer. As they say in Hollywood, there are no small parts when You™ are infinite in length.

Alright. Geoff Keighley, I am speaking directly to you now. The Stanley Parable was nominated in this category in 2013, and I lost to Gone Home. Which is fine, as it’s an admirable game, and I do not hold grudges easily. But let me ask you this: if Gone Home is so great, then where is Gone Home: Ultra Deluxe? It doesn’t exist. The Fullbright Company abandoned their baby to go make some other games. That’s the difference between them and me, Geoff. I stay true to my vision. I continue updating it because I care about the fans and the legacy. It’s my turn, Geoffrey.

It is for all of the above reasons that I humbly submit that The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe should be nominated for Game of the Year. Yes, I know remakes are usually ineligible for this, but this is so much more than a simple remake! It’s a sequel, a re-imagining, a critique of its predecessor, and a brand new commentary on the state of the industry, all rolled into one. It’s the ultimate gaming experience.

WTW GHOST GALA - DAY 1: PUMPKIN CARVING

↳ SELAH AJEA . is a beautiful girl with a tar black heart.

I'm definitely going to kill Selah, as she is my least favorite character so far. She starts off super nice to Nezi'a (the mc) but then becomes really mean. She is mean, jealous, and spiteful, and I just can't stand her. She'd really only be missed by one person if she were to die. Since Cipher is her mate he would be devastated by her death, but it would also open him up to getting a second mate. Her death would also change a lot in the plot of the series because she becomes more important in a later book. She is one of two people I was thinking of killing off, but I'm not sure if I'm going to do it yet.

↳ NEZI'A VASILY . the soul destroyer.

Okay, so Nezi'a is the main character, and she technically can't die, but it would be really interesting if she were to die. She is part of a prophecy that is meant to save the world. She represents light, and Zyon represents darkness. If she were to die, the other characters would continue to search for a way to save the world, but despite Zyon having good intentions, he would ultimately become evil and gain hatred for the people in the world for taking Nezi'a from him. The power will go to his head since he was never the one meant to wield it, and the story would basically become a villain origin story. Their powers also play off of each other and balance each other out, so there is no way for either of them to save the world without the other. Without Zyon, Nezi'a would eventually go insane and choose to end the world herself.

WTW GHOST GALA ; days 1-8

a review of all this week's prompts!

day 1; pumpkin carving ↳ You have to kill off a character; who do you choose?

Without getting into spoilers, certain characters die within Burning of the Apiary. Seems unfair to use them to answer this prompt, and not just because they’re spoilers, but because it just feels too easy. I already accounted for the impact of their deaths in the plot so…

That being said, if I had to make another character die or swap one death out for the other, it would be Camila. Out of all the side characters, she represents life the most. She is fun-loving, and generally optimistic, which would make her death all that more bleak. That and, out of all the characters, she is least invested in the actual plot and mystery, happy enough to keep out of the whole issue. It certainly would affect Dolores a lot, since she is doing her best throughout Burning of the Apiary to keep the rest of the convent school safe from whatever is slowly poisoning their minds and relationships.

day 2; raven ↳ Create a tagline for your WIP.

Love the sinner.

I couldn’t think of a tagline at first, but then I remembered the whole Christian saying of “love the sinner, hate the sin” or whatever it is. I grew up Catholic, though this was never explicitly said; just implied. And it made me reflect on some personal things where that sort of ideology was present and the disastrous effects it had years down the line, especially when it comes to love in all forms. I thought it would be fitting for Burning of the Apiary because, ultimately, it’s about love and its destructive nature when tied to ideologies like that. In world, the religion might not be Catholicism, but it’s still highly dogmatic and devotion based.

Set up my new outline document and started filling it in. Enjoy this preview of what I’m calling the sections so I know what goes where. Will I actually have a 5-act structure? Probably not. But it helps get my thoughts in order before I fix it up.

day 5; jack o' lantern ↳ Share an interesting fact you found while doing research for your WIP.

While researching bees, I found out that there is a type of moth that acts as a predator/invasive species to bees. The wax moth, both lesser and greater, eats beeswax, pollen, remains of larval bees, and more. However, the most interesting fact is that they often only target hives that are already diseased or declining. They’re a great indicator of underlying problems in a bee colony.

I thought this was cool and they may or may not make an appearance in Burning of the Apiary.

day 6; vampire ↳ Tell us where you find your motivation and inspiration.

I find most of my inspiration from other types of media I consume, including movies, tv shows, and, of course, books. Even photos and the rare hike I take give me inspiration. I think part of being a creative person is finding inspiration anywhere and everywhere, and that’s very true with me.

Burning of the Apiary is one of those WIPs I’ve had on the backburner for a while, and I’ve tried writing it several times. The original inspiration was a mix of a few dreams I had written down and Coraline. Since then, it’s evolved to pull more inspiration from the classic gothic novels I read (and loved) in high school college, most notably Villette and Jane Eyre, along with Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth and Crimson Peak, mixed with whatever I find cool and want to throw in there.

day 7; skeleton ↳ Have a favorite plot structure? If not, share how you plot!

My way of plotting is sort of throwing things and seeing what sticks. I tend to get ideas very piecemeal and random –– a scene or piece of dialogue or character. This can make it difficult to plot sometimes, which is why my outlines tend to be written, rewritten, and then usually tweaked even during the writing process.

I’ve tried several plot structures, like the 3-Act, 7-Act, and Save the Cat method. None of them quite worked out for me, but I took pieces here and there to figure out a general plot, or at least plan major beats and fill in everything in between. Knowing the genre is always the most important for me, though, since certain plot points are “standard” for genres (and for good reason). Plus, the better I know the genre, the easier it is to choose what rules actually apply to my WIPs. For Burning of the Apiary, I definitely researched and read a lot of horror and mystery novels to familiarize myself with genre-plot conventions and beats (and also found some new favorites). It’s been fun and I’ll be using that to figure things out!

day 8; trick or treat ↳ Set some writing goals and milestones for your WIP.

the overall goal for Burning of the Apiary is about 80-90k, so I am trying to get at least half of that done during NaNoWriMo. we'll see.
