The Harvest or Ceres and Triptolemus
Artist: Louis-Jean-François Lagrenée (French, 1725–1805)
Date: 1769
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Louvre Museum, Paris, France
Description
Few French painters of the eighteenth century were more indecisive than Lagrenée, who was capable of shifting from the flowery allegory of Harvest (1769) to the gray classicism of The Visitation (1781). The prolific Lagrenée listened to everyone, and was alternatively treated by Diderot with harshness for his lack of ideas and extolled for the "charm" of his Mercury, Herse and Aglauros. This made Lagrenée a particularly indulgent director of the French Academy in Rome from 1781 to 1787.

Allegory of Earth
Artist: Jan Brueghel the Younger (Flemish, 1601-1678), Hendrik van Balen (Flemish, c. 1573–1575-1632)
Date: 1630-1635
Medium: Oil painting
Collection: Utah Museum of Fine Arts, Salt Lake City, Utah, United States
Description
In Allegory of Earth, we see depictions of a rich and fertile landscape, and nature’s bounty in the blooming flowers and fruitful harvest. This lushness is highlighted with a celestial, religious scene in the sky. Both the earthly and heavenly beings appear set to partake: the earthlings harvesting food, and those in heaven sat down at a table. Those on earth work to pass the bounty heavenward, where the gods are prepared to feast.

Rinaldo and Armida
Artist: Charles de La Fosse (French, 1636-1716)
Date: 1686-1691
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: National Trust Collections, London, United Kingdom
Description
Rinaldo, a Christian Prince or crusading knight and Armida, a Saracen sorceress, are a pair of lovers from the Italian epic poem on the subject of the Crusades, Gerusalemme Liberata (Jerusalem Delivered) (1581) by Torquato Tasso (1544-1595). The subject here is Armida and the sleeping Rinaldo when, during his search for a magical island on the River Orontes in Syria, Rinaldo falls into an enchanted sleep. Armida discovers him, meaning to kill him, but falls in love with him instead. Rinaldo is seen lying underneath some trees with his head on a cushion, his armour and a leopard skin laid to one side. He holds a spear in his left hand. Armida, with long blonde hair and blue cloak, kneels beside him. She is accompanied by two female attendants, Phenice and Sidonie. Three putti fly above the head of Rinaldo, carrying off his helmet, shield and sword. A fourth points to Rinaldo. A landscape with distant hills can be seen at the far left.

Astrological Putti - putti (cherubim) for astrological constellations.
I'm planning to turn these into pins, many of them have already been made! And I'll be polishing them up in the future to make into stickers, a print, and maybe keychains too.

Pygmalion and his Statue
Artist: Louis-Jean-François Lagrenée (French, 1725–1805)
Date: 1777
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Sinebrychoff Art Museum, Helsinki, Finland
Description
Pygmalion, a sculptor from Amathus on Cyprus, was discouraged by the morals of women and chose to focus on his art. He carved a realistic statue of his ideal woman out of ivory and named her Galatea. Pygmalion prayed to Aphrodite, the goddess of love, beauty, and fertility, to make Galatea come to life. Aphrodite answered his prayers and brought the statue to life. Pygmalion and Galatea married and had a child named Paphos.

A Dance to the Music of Time
Artist: Nicolas Poussin (French, 1594-1665)
Date: ca. 1634-1636
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: The Wallace Collection, London, United Kingdom
Description
Although trained in Paris, the French painter Nicholas Poussin spent most of his career in Rome. This painting was created for a Roman patron, Giulio Rospigliosi, later Pope Clement IX. A circle of figures who symbolise the Seasons dance to the music played by Father Time on his lyre. Autumn, usually represented by a woman, is here represented as Bacchus, the god of wine. Two putti, one blowing bubbles and the other holding an hour glass, allude to the transience of human life; the double-headed herm, depicting the youthful and mature Bacchus, points its old head towards the dance, while its young head looks out of the composition to the future. In the sky, the sun god Apollo rides across the morning sky in his chariot, preceded by Aurora (dawn) and followed by the Hours.
