tell me about the relationship between the Horns and their rat freak!!! 👀💕
All right, so first of all, this ratthing is Alchimancer Phlunq, or commonly known as Phlunq Blighthorn!
Tumblr media
His particular brand of weird is that he's kinda dead--specifically, after a happening during a visit to Grenth's Door alongside Sieran of the Durmand Priory in which he hears a voice, and an incident on a research trip to Orr (instigated by Inquest) that does result in his death.
Until he wakes up in Inquest custody, being subjected to experiments. By his own knowledge, he was being spoken to the entire time--as if overhearing half a conversation while asleep--and upon waking (and freeing himself from the slab they've left him in) goes on a bit of a killing spree. And raises the dead as Risen. His time to bask in the conversations of the dead is cut short when the Pact raids the facility, and he winds up a prisoner member of the Commander's entourage.
Background aside: the gang loves their rat! Plunk has a bit of a complicated attitude that makes him hard to get along with, and a tendency to release toxic fumes if he's inattentive (or too attentive). But at the end of the day, Plunk acknowledges the risks Horncleaver's taken with offering him protection and freedom, and although he's very much something of a loose cannon, he does enjoy the social aspects of being in the warband, even if his circumstances and personal inclinations result in a lot of clashing. However, this is slightly eased by the fact that there is a second asura in the warband, @somekindofweasel's Pyromancer/Magiscientist Kudo (Pyrehorn). And by 'slightly eased' I mean they have a bitter, romance-rivalry which takes the pressure off of everyone else.
Tumblr media
He's a former researcher who was focused on trying to better the lives of others via alchemizing adaptation, and wound up a casualty of the Inquest and a pawn...or asset of Zhaitan, and has inadvertently wound up with a lot of power and responsibility. The Horns have been a big part in assisting in his acclimation and teaching him responsibility, as he's present for many important story beats and having his own part in the ongoing dragon conflicts and the like.

people and by people i mean targ stans mythologising aegon's conquest and the way torrhen stark bent the knee as he saw the devastation that are dragons and, well, the north does not have the resources to follow up the war when WINTER IS COMING and your house is bound to keep the wall and the ice horrors away south the wall, so you make a tactical decision to avoid bloodshed and fire horrors from the south.
(meanwhile dorne and house martell has hating targaryens and dragonlords imbedded in their DNA, it is an imported good that arrived on nymeria's ships and you honor your legacy, and you keep being unbent to the dragon or die trying. which kudos to you divas)
meanwhile, the goddamn moment show starks nope put of bending the knee anymore they're compared to kkk (oh you know the moniker) and it annoys me so much, because house that almost 300 years later got so much devastation from the south and from the fire horrors (not the dragon fire per se but pyromancer's fire) and the rebellion and actively going south and involving themselves in the politics was their fall and rlj this and that but to people not interesting in prophecies or question was it love or not it is an abductions and is remembered by everyone is a crime. and the north remembers. and idk it annoys me so much to miss this nuance especially that robb's title as king in the north was all about norther independence and is this so bad that at least one sibling decided to keep up honoring their brother and his will? and honor northern lords' agreemement to not be ruled by southerners who bring nothing but devastation in thier region.

Weeds in cracked pavement, brick wall moss, chainlink fence vines, and other small plants living in the city share wisdom more blunt and honest than the long winded poetry of ancient oak.
Druid: Let me commune with the flora, perhaps it knows where our rogue pyromancer fled.
Potted plant: [Guurl, it is hot out here 🔥🥵. I am glo-bal war-ming.]
Druid: [Mama kudos for saying that, for spilling]
Druid: The pyromancer is nearby, follow me.
Fantasy setting where the main druid of your party is from the city would be a fun way to spice things up. Can't control trees or large animals, but can beckon urban vermin and small plants to devastating effect that wild druids can't.

| I sincerely hope that whoever celebrated anything today had a great time. | Meanwhile I need to go to sleep. Timezones, yadda yadda. | Have a desert sorceress picture that I couldn’t find here on tumblr so I had to manually post her here. The artist is ‘Vempire’, as the sign says at the bottom-left corner. | Funny how her ‘desert’ clothes can be easily modified for a certain holiday.

Someone my muse is Jealous of
If you asked me this a few months ago, I’d say no one. But after having met Loala Addington he does have a bit of a jealousy towards her. It’s super petty really, But he’s jealous of her little Ember. For a couple reasons.First off, Ember is such a unique familiar. A flame lashling is such a good fit for a Pyromancer so like (OOC kudos for that Lo) it’s just such a perfect expression of her power and interest and stuff. again it’s kind of petty, but he wants a familiar.
Now I know what you’re thinking, “But Percy has 4 standing contracts as well as temporary summons of imps and felhounds and probably a secret Doomguard” Yeah that’s fine and dandy and they’re fun and he’d be hung if he summoned one in the city for any reason less than absolute necessity. So outside of like super private drabbles and if I ever do combat RP again, they don’t get a lot of RP use. Which sucks because they all have unique personalities and I adore writing for all of them. So that brings me to reason two, Ember is a safe little pet to have stroll around in the city and play with and interact with and shower with affections.Percy, and honestly I, really miss interacting with his demons. being able to boss around his imp. Or scratch his Felpuppers belly. Flirt with his succubus, Or butt heads with his Felguard. So yes. Percival is a little jealous of Loala.(( @littlelady-lo ))

❓🩹🗑️ for Gaius~
Ask Game
❓: Estranged family/relatives they've never met
Gaius is the oldest of his sire Oryen's brood, but because of his dam's escape with him to Iron when he was 2, he's unaware of most of his siblings prior to IBS, and even Oryen himself really, with a few notable exceptions.
🩹 : Someone who was a source of trauma
Among his family, the World's Freakiest Dad award goes to Oryen. Technically speaking, he doesn't know much about him personally prior to Citadel of Flame, but knowing your sire is a war criminal shaman is typically more than enough, growing up. Coupled with the understanding that Oryen is the cause of his dam's Final Patrol (abstractly; Gaius remains unaware that Oryen is also literally made her do it) all of this shaped Gaius into who he is at the start of Personal Story.
🗑️: "It's complicated"
Among his siblings that he knows, some of the more complicated relationships go to his brother Wrygle Lifedrinker, younger by 3 years, and his sister Artificer Lucasta, younger by 32 years.
Wrygle is a complicated situation because he is the start of their sire's "project" to breed a better shaman, and is by Oryen's open and vocal measure, a failure--something Wrygle has been reminded of his entire life. He finds himself simultaneously envious of and disgusted with Gaius for how his absence has shaped his life.
Lucasta, meanwhile, Gaius has known since she was 12, when her dam, an Ash Legion spy, pulled a similar escape to his own, getting her daughter out of Flame before returning to her own mission. For a period, Gaius is her primary guardian while she struggles to adapt to the Iron Legion fahrar, trying to support and instill Iron-typical values in her in much the way he had to find for himself. When she goes missing, he may or may not have looked for her. When she returns some two years prior to Personal Story, pushing 16, a member of the Priory, and with an asuran scholar in tow, he seems plenty content to resume his mantle and see how willing she is to adapt now, and failing that, he'll teach her rat in her stead.

1, 2, 17, 19 and 33 for the Horn warband :D
Ask Game
Which Legion does the warband belong to?
The Horns are a proud Iron warband, though most if not all of its members have ties to other legions (and there's even some non-charr members).
2. How and when was the warband formed?
The Horns were formed by Gaius in 1325 during his Personal Story for the sake of clearing his name after he'd been charged with a series of murders. The original members of the band included himself, Oberon Furyhorn, Sigmund Shieldhorn (later Brighthorn), and Augustus Silverhorn. Later additions include Terang Bulan Shorthorn, (Pyromancer) Kudo Pyrehorn, and (Alchimancer) Phlunq Blighthorn.
17. Have they ever gotten in big trouble with superiors?
As a warband, technically no. As individuals, yes, multiple of them have. Gaius being a centurion at the start of Personal Story puts him and the band in a position of slight advantage that allows them to get away with a lot more than your average band would, but also, Gaius is genuinely rather straight-laced and keeps them all honest.
19. What's the overall social dynamic in the warband like? (chill and friendly, harsh and hierarchical, like family, etc)
Gaius runs the Horns the same way he does his subordinates, as a centurion and as commander, which is to say that he trusts everyone to do the jobs he sets for them, and will generally allow individuals to employ whatever means they deem necessary as long as the work is done when and how he needs it. In particular, when recruiting Oberon, this was a big point of interest because of Oberon's history as violent and more than willing to challenge and kill superiors he disagreed with. Gaius approached him with conditions for recruitment and assured him that if things were done as needed, they'd work well together, and Oberon, with no reason to argue with guidelines so clearly placed, has worked out with little issue. Being that the Horns are mostly an administrative warband, this isn't usually a huge problem, but overall the point is just that Gaius is an attentive commanding officer who does good research when recruiting folk, and also is willing to meet people halfway. Respect and discipline are expected because of what exactly it is they do, but again, as long as the job gets done, do it how you want.
33. Bonus question: trivia time!
Currently, the warband acts as Horn Gladium Outreach based out of the Black Citadel, which is a business that does effectively what it sounds like. In the time after IBS, Gaius went to reorganize and establish an office in the Citadel where Iron gladium could go to seek assistance with being reassigned within the Legions, or alternatively, seek advice on finding a place outside the Legions. The operations quickly expanded, as Gaius acts essentially as a therapist with helping gladium come to terms with their circumstances and find healthier places of mind before seeking work. Oberon and Sigmund in particular develop prostheses for those in need.

Pity the Fool
Horncleaver’s office was sparsely decorated and immaculately organized: this hadn’t changed in years, even after it had become the headquarters for Horn’s Gladium Outreach, even after the legionnaire–no, centurion, Terang Bulan corrected himself–had spent days fretting and cub-proofing the place. He’d insisted that they couldn’t be apart from the Black Citadel, even while the vast majority of its occupants glared steely dismissal and icy indifference down at them like hail and rain, and Terang Bulan had to admit that he had been right. Though it’d been slow at first, the trickle of charr looking for (or ready to accept)  help eventually became a near-steady stream on a daily basis, and their work had been recognized; the old man’s promotion had been sudden, but welcome.
“How long has this been going on?”
Terang Bulan stood at attention as Horncleaver glared at him. It was rare that such ire (or any expression aside from mild annoyance or confusion) was directed at anyone within the warband; that hurt more than the numerous bruises that had formed which he hadn’t had the chance to heal.
“Since the rally, sir.”
The shame burned hotter as Horncleaver sighed. He didn’t know what was going on in the older charr’s head, but the disappointment was obvious enough. The two of them, alone for the first time in months–mostly alone, as Gloryana was curled in the crook of her sire’s arm, auburn on auburn like a puzzle piece, watching him with alarming blue eyes not unlike her sire’s–and it was about this. His fists clenched at his sides as he prepared to be shouted at, demoted, really the possibilities were endless now that he’d made Horncleaver upset.
A look crossed the old charr’s muzzle, but it was gone before Terang Bulan could identify it. Horncleaver’s free paw massaged his temples; Gloryana’s attention was caught by the shimmering light refracted from her sire’s glimmering horns, and the office was quiet save for the ambient sounds of the Citadel alive around them. Terang Bulan had never liked the view of the Citadel from these windows, because more often than not the charr below, cogs in the machine of the High Legions, reminded him more of ants milling around a corpse.
“Cub,” Horncleaver cleared his throat. “I’m not going to say I understand how you feel; I’d prefer not to belittle you, and I know you’d appreciate the same.”
Terang Bulan nodded, and the centurion continued, “However, I need to know what you’re thinking before I can help you.”
The situation, honestly, wasn’t even that serious; fights were commonplace in the Citadel, and neither Terang Bulan nor Kudo had pulled a weapon on the other. Rather, he was aware, the real trifle was that the Horn warband didn’t generally get involved in situations like this, least of all Horncleaver’s pet outcast and the asura boyfriend of his favorite cub. Terang Bulan’s tail lashed, and he continued to stew in silence as his throat began to tighten. When it was clear he wasn’t going to answer, Horncleaver spoke again.
“I told you, years ago, to mind her boundaries. What made you think fighting him would help things?”
Terang Bulan didn’t have an answer that made sense even to him, let alone one that didn’t make him come off like an idiot creep, so again, he didn’t answer. If he was honest, the fact that he couldn’t rightly answer Horncleaver made him almost as ashamed as the fact that he’d lost the fight, and that only made his throat close up more.
“All right. Well, you’re being fined.” Horncleaver lifted his paw before continuing, “I’m going to handle that.” Then he shifted his daughter, scooting her into his other arm.
The frustration in Horncleaver’s features melted into something Terang Bulan recognized easily as the other charr continued to watch him: a mixture of affection and sadness tugged at the corner of Horncleaver’s eye.
“I want you to take a leave of absence. I want you to focus on yourself,” Horncleaver said. “I want you to be able to talk about… anything. This is your warband, you should rely on us as much as we rely on you. I’m your legionnaire, Terang Bulan. Is that understood?”
Terang Bulan choked on his assent, and instead nodded.
“This isn’t meant to be a punishment. I didn’t notice what you were dealing with,” Horncleaver grunted. His deep voice was resounding in the office, and Terang Bulan was momentarily distracted by the thought of how it must rumble like a distant storm in Gloryana’s ear before he could force his attention back to his centurion’s explanation. “I’m sorry for that, cub.”
