So here's some things I've recently done as part of my permanent move to the beautiful Pacific Northwest:

Looked up some lab jobs and failed to get any actual "biting." Failing meaning I've received call backs for jobs that are either part-time (I'm only looking for full-time) or is too far (more than an hour of commute time; Seattle traffic is notoriously nightmarish, second to L.A. traffic).

Started a Python boot camp course at the behest and guidance of my sweet cousin who's a professional in the I.T. field. It's a secondary industry I have a lot of secret love and adoration for.

Listening to irresponsible people letting off fireworks despite them being banned in multiple communities/counties in Washington State. Why you ask? Well, one, we are currently coming off of a heatwave. At the highest, the temperatures here ran up to an unbearable 102+. For anyone who lives down South who's going to mock people for ensuring that and being "too pussy," kindly eff off. Because Washington State is very green, like, surrounded by a ton of tall redwoods, it is very prone to forest fires. As is Oregon. As is California.

Brings me to my next point...

According to the local news, we are expecting impending forest fires. As a precaution, the local wildlife department and forestry departments are urging people to not light up fireworks or sprinklers. They are urging people to please not burn firewood for camping purposes this 4th of July weekend. They are urging people to not burn their fire pits and hold off until the forest fire season passes.

As an FYI, forest fire season extends all the way thru August. While we will not be experiencing record high temperatures for the rest of THIS summer cycle, we will be increasingly prone to forest fires.

So what does that mean for people who do not live in the PNW or are not familiar with the quality of life in this otherwise bearable and beautiful region of the U.S.?

Also, there is a risk with smoke and smoke inhalation, particularly when it concerns the elderly and young kids. It also has adverse effects on wildlife and the surrounding forests. So yeah, dealing with that. We'll see what happens in the coming months.

In addition to the coding boot camp, I'm also cooking dinner and working on getting everything paperwork wise in order. There's a lot of moving parts with moving and especially moving in with another person: changing phone plans, changing addresses (did this once and I'll have to do it again), changing phone numbers so that you have an area code that reflects your new residence, finding a place to live with that person, finding a new job (this being the biggest one), lol, and one unique one for me is learning how to pump my own gas. New Jersey has gas attendants, one of the few states to my knowledge that does. So a learning curve for me is pulling up to a gas station and doing it myself. It's very easy though.

Anyway, this is just a brief check-in. I don't typically make update posts all that often. My mutuals know this. When I move with my partner again successfully and everything is rightly in order, aka my landing a job and whatnot, I'll check in again.

Oh! One more thing, obviously getting married is also on the agenda. This is something else my partner and I have to plan for. Very exciting developments indeed.

Procedure: It is important to note the wide variety of variables (see section on measures below) and income statistics among the different countries in the Gapminder data set. In this assignment, it is not possible to detail the procedures adopted to measure all the different variables in the data set. Instead, I choose to detail the procedures adopted for measuring just one variable: HIV Prevalence rate among ages 15-49. In high-income countries, HIV is mainly found among persons who: (a) use drugs intravenously, and/or (b) sex workers and homosexual men. In these countries, the HIV rate is reported using (1) reporting of new HIV cases by labs/clinicians, and (2) by HIV testing in risk groups. This process of recording new HIV cases does not work well for for low and middle-income countries, presumably because of lack of good governance and available public health resources. In these countries, the HIV rate is calculated by using repeated surveys of different population groups, especially for groups at risk for higher levels of infection. One typical method to estimate HIV rate is to survey and estimate the percentage rate of infection of intravenous drug users. This rate is then multiplied by the estimate of the total percentage of the total population that engages in intravenous drug usage. IT is easy to see that the first part (obtaining the rate of infection among intravenous drup users) is more easily done and accurate than the second part (estimating the fraction of the total population that engages in intravenous drug use). There is a danger that the intravenous drug users who are easily found are typically already infected. Thus, there is a danger of overestimating the total HIV rate in the general population. Another way to estimate HIV rates in such countries is to monitor HIV prevalence rates among pregnant women. These estimates are then extrapolated to the whole population. Another (but more expensive method) is to test a representative sample of men and women of different ages and in different geographical areas, using "two-stage cluster" sampling techniques. These sophisticated and more expensive methods of HIV estimation have led to revising downwards the HIV estimates.

Measures (Variables): The Gapminder data set is an extraordinary collection of data points from across the globe. The (http://www.gapminder.org/data/) current data set lists 519 different variables. The Gapminder data set provided in the codebook made available for this course lists 15 important variables.
