The first time I heard the #QahwahConLeche instrumental album by my brothers @thanksjoey & @elbles I was hooked. Representing #Syria & #PuertoRico respectively, they brought together beautiful #Arabic & #Latin samples over some hypnotically bangin drum patterns. It wasn’t long before I started freestyling to them in the car & some of y’all might have seen an iG-TV video of mine to that effect (#OmarsBarsInCars). The #SufiColada track instantly drew me in. Aside from the infectious bop of a loop they chopped up, I was loving the Abu 3antar & Husni Borthan vocal in the beginning (if you don’t know, you’d better ask a #Shami). The latter can be heard saying “where you at brother? we wanna make music!” to which the former replies “well make music then, who’s holding you back?” 💡 This fortuitously inspired Joey & I to take a musical journey digging up dozens of nostalgic sound bites & melodies from the unforgettable “Ghawwar” #comedy series we both grew up appreciating as #SyrianAmerican kids with roots in #Damascus. We met up a couple times a week over the last few months in-between my touring & Baba duties, and eventually churned out an album which I’m really excited to start sharing with you all soon. ⌛️ The energy on this cut is admittedly braggadocios / sarcastic, but for those who press rewind enough you’ll find some gems. To borrow a phrase from my favorite Brazilian emcee @nikohigh, it’s a “#rappetizer “ of what you can expect from the forthcoming album (yes he too will be featured next on it). 🍽 Much love to the thousands of y’all who’ve been streaming #YouMakeMeLaugh these last few days! #Music can be cathartic, especially in turbulent times — whether it’s a momentary escape through a catchy beat, or a deep reflection driven by poignant lyrics (& hopefully this track can give you a little of both) ...
