So it’s been a while since I talked about this on Tumblr, so a lot of my current followers may have no idea that this is happening.

For the last several years, Ryan Kopf (who runs a number of conventions including Anime Midwest, AniMinneapolis, Kanpai!Con, QC Anime-zing!, Anime-ZAP!, Meta Con, Anime Halloween, and Liberty City Anime -- and has a financial stake in more) has been suing me for defamation over a couple of articles I wrote on my website Nerd & Tie.

These days Nerd & Tie is better known for our family of podcasts like BS-Free Witchcraft and Hex Positive, but covering fandom convention issues has always been a part of our core mission.

This lawsuit has gone on for over five years, and needless to say this gofundme hasn’t even begun to scratch the surface of our current costs. If you can contribute, I’d really appreciate it.

why you shouldn’t attend a con run by Ryan Kopf

TW: Sexual Assault, Pedophilia

Ryan Kopf is the head of Chrono LC, which is a company that hosts several conventions such as Anime Zap, QC Anime-Zing!, AniMinneapolis, Anime Midwest, Meta Con, Domo Con, and Anime-SPARK!

He is also

a pedophile (acused by many sources)

an accused sexual assaulter, abuser, and rapist

running unsafe cons

a general creep.

From what I understand, the original allegations were deleted due to harrassment. This information is gathered from secondhand sources.

Kopf has been accused of creeping on underage girls at his cons. He assaulted a minor, apparently, and there is a police report (more on that later). Many of the attendees at his cons are minors, so he has ample opportunity to prey on girls. His volunteers are also underage.

In 2013, there was a police report filed from a girl claiming she was raped by Kopf. It was proven real and in the report, she goes into detail on her injuries and the event. There were photographs attached with matching images. She decided not to press charges. Kopf’s ex-girlfriend came forward with a statement about abuse, claiming during their relationship he would harm her. Another attendee’s girlfriend was recognized by another attendee as “the girl who was screaming ‘no no no’ as she was dragged into Ryan’s hotel room’. Kopf has blacklisted people from his cons for bringing up these topics.

Since his events are “for profit”, Kopf tends to cut corners on expenses. One way is through hiring volunteers, which in itself isn’t a bad thing, but he hires teenagers as young as 14. This is unsafe for attendees, for these volunteers make up the vast majority of his security staff. An adult or anyone remotely strong can take down a child and if anyone’s in danger, security can’t intervene. If the con is crowded, which his are, security might not even be able to find someone in danger. By the time they call security, a victim or even the staff could be injured from an attacker. Also, since he’s a pedophile, these volunteers may be subjected to his interest. The girl who was raped was a volunteer.

To reach other girls and children, he created an amine dating site, MaiOtaku, which he used to pair himself with young girls and make himself seem like the perfect choice. He also started a videogame cafe, marketted towards a younger audience, even though it was never even close to turning a profit. The cafe shut down within a couple of months. There was very little reason to start one, considering their most profitable era was the 80’s.

Since these allegations surfaced, he’s been highly involved in a new, illegal company to run cons under, Black Materia.

Besides being followed around by an annoying af relative, Anime-zing was pretty fun! c: I still maintain that the last Homestuck panel was some fever dream or something.

Mom had fun too; she spent most of the con stalking Eric Stuart. It's good to know where I get my dumb fan-ness from. :P

For anyone trolling around the tag looking for people, I was Terezi (or FLARP!Terezi) all weekend. uwu The one with the sweet-ass dragon cane, the too-dark grey makeup on Friday and Saturday, and the Kyuubei backpack on Sunday.

I am proud to say that I will be your host for cosplay chess at QC Anime-zing this year and I’m so excited! I’ve been putting work to make this year more interesting and much smoother then last year. All right, we are a month away from QC Anime-zing now. So I think now would be appropriate to post my cosplay line-up. I’m also feeling so old, this is Brea’s and my fifth year at Zing and their tenth year. I’m super excited and while I’m not prepared with the costumes I need to finish, I cannot wait for the next month to go by really fast. We are back to more cosplays that need a binder (Kris, secret, Lala, and Ryuji) vs non-binder (Sakura, Futaba). This year, I am also proud to announce that I will be hosting not just one but two panels this year! Friday, I will be hosting my annual Cosplay Chess panel at 9:00 PM in Panel Room 1. Nothing new this year except we do need to make sure we end in time so that Greg Ayres’ panel can start on time, but I will be posting an information document on that soon. I will also be hosting Voice Acting at Home for the Beginner (or Hobbyist) on Saturday at 9:00 PM also in Panel Room 1. This panel will be a bit rough but we will try. Amber Lee Connors is hosting her Online Voice Acting panel earlier in the day and if I knew that I wouldn’t have applied because I feel like we’re gonna have the same stuff. (I would have totally let her cause she would be better then me.) But we are scheduled so we’re gonna go ahead. Depending on how many people went to Amber’s, we will either stick with our original plan or recap a bit and go for other areas that aren’t directly voice acting.

First off happy third year Undertale! I honestly ignore the toxic part of the fandom but I love Undertale so much and it has a special place in my heart. Not only was it a good coping mechanism in my final semester of college (not to mention a big distraction from my final Religion and the Arts paper, whoops) but I've met so many good friends in the fandom.
