Initial Launch with Pasqal Orion Beta: OVHcloud will launch the QPU in September 2025. With its 100 neutral atom qubit capacity, this cutting-edge gadget advances consumer quantum technology. This first offering allows for more quantum computers on its platform.
The company plans to have three QPUs by 2025, signalling rapid growth of its QPU products. This fast deployment shows OVHcloud's desire to swiftly extend its quantum compute capability.
Extended European Focus by 2027: Moving future, OVHcloud wants to dramatically increase its QPU fleet. At least eight QPUs will be available to QaaS clients by 2027. Importantly, seven of these eight QPUs are expected to be European, highlighting the focus on European innovation. In addition to its growing array of quantum emulators, the OVHcloud Quantum Cloud platform is being carefully designed to enable smooth access to quantum computers when they become available.
Improved Quantum Emulator Portfolio
Along with its true QPU deployments, OVHcloud has improved its quantum emulators. The company adds two powerful emulators: Mimiq from Qperfect and Qleo from Quobly. With these projected improvements, OVHcloud has eight quantum emulators. Developers need this expanded emulator suite since it increases OVHcloud's hybrid cloud capabilities and gives more simulation tools. It helps build and test quantum algorithms before deploying them on QPUs.
Advances in Quantum Security
OVHcloud is investing heavily in quantum security since quantum computing poses new cybersecurity threats. Our main goal is to future-proof digital security against quantum computing dangers.

Why China Didn’t Need To Ban Crypto
China has just banned cryptocurrency for good and, while the move is hardly surprising given their increasingly hostile stance on the activity in the past couple of years, it is also completely unnecessary.
What Has Happened?
So China has just announced that they will be cracking down entirely on cryptocurrency by making associated activities against the law. 11 Chinese government authorities came together to announce that they would be banning all crypto mining and declaring all financial transactions involving cryptocurrencies entirely illegal. Even overseas crypto exchanges will be illegal if they involve a Chinese party.
Within minutes of the announcement, Bitcoin had plummeted 7% on the NASDAQ. Hardly surprising given that China once accounted for 75% of the world’s Bitcoin energy use.
Why Did They Do It?
There are a couple of key reasons that Chinese governments have given for the ban, and they are reasons they have been banging on about since they first expressed concerns about the industry.
Environmental Impact
The first concern China has raised is that crypto mining is extremely bad for the environment. Now, in all honesty, I don’t have much of an argument for this one, because it is.
Meanwhile, Chinese president Xi Jinping has committed to making his country completely carbon neutral by 2060. Seeing as it is predicted that China accounts for the vast majority of Bitcoin mining globally, it is hardly surprising that this is an activity he wants to shut down.
I won’t argue with this one, Xi, 1-0 to you.

Decentralized Finance
Let’s put the environmental aspect to the side for a second (don’t shoot me, it’s just not the topic of this blog, OK?).
The primary reason China has actually given for the crypto ban is the fact that it is based on a decentralized finance system (also known as DeFi). DeFi is a financial system through which financial products and services are run without any central authority. They are available on a decentralized blockchain network that is completely open to the public. It takes out the financial middleman (i.e. a bank or broker), making DeFi products far more accessible than their centralized counterparts.
The benefits of DeFi are predominantly in speed and cost. Without needing to wait for a middleman to approve a transaction, trades and asset movement can be made instantly and without the need to pay any additional fees. However, the system is also much safer for end-users. Under centralized programmes, banks and other authorities can manipulate the value of their customer’s savings and investments - for example, by adjusting interest rates. However, without a central authority, end-users can be sure this won’t happen. Their assets are stable and secure. Finally, the data storage technology utilised within DeFi (known as ‘Blockchain’) is far safer than those used for centralized financial products. Blockchain carefully monitors, stores, and secures each transaction made so that it can be verified and traced back to its owners. It is also managed by a whole team of devices (rather than one device, as most data storage facilities are). This makes it much harder for cyber criminals to access, change, or manipulate data in order to steal money. BUT that doesn’t mean they can’t. Because they have. Several times.
It might sound like I am on China’s side here (in which case, what’s with the title of the blog, right?) but I am not. You see, what they are failing to see is that the way crypto is run right now isn’t the only way. Instead of banning it altogether, they just need to find a better, safer way to make it work. And that already exists!
So What Is The Alternative?
Get to the point, right?
I will.
See, there is a solution out there that can help crypto to exist in much the same way it does right now, but with an added layer of cyber security keeping it safe from any malicious attack. No need to get rid of blockchain or start again with the whole DeFi process. We can keep all the benefits of decentralized finance whilst ensuring that our data (and, most importantly, our money) is completely safe.
The solution comes from a company called Arqit, which has created a cyber security product based on its own encryption technique. The technique, which benefits from some of the clever technology used in quantum computing, is known as ‘quantum encryption’.
Quantum encryption is completely impossible to decrypt because it does not rely on any type of ‘pattern’ to create its encryption keys. Instead, quantum encryption creates random and unique keys for every new piece of data transferred. This makes the system entirely unpredictable and thus unhackable!
So how does this solve the security problem that China is using as an excuse to ban crypto?
Well, it’s pretty simple.
If we equipped all crypto devices with QuantumCloud™, ensuring that the quantum encryption technique was enabled from end to end for all cryptocurrency-related data transfers, we would be completely safe from the kinds of hacks the Chinese government is worried about. No bans required.

Arqit raising $400 million with a SPAC to launch quantum encryption satellites in 2023

TAMPA, Fla. — British quantum technology encryption startup Arqit is raising $400 million in the space industry’s latest SPAC deal, supporting the launch and construction of two satellites in 2023 to protect against growing hacking threats.
The fundraising comes as the FBI investigates a ransomware attack that closed a U.S. pipeline providing a significant portion of gasoline and jet fuel to the East Coast, highlighting a need to bolster cyberdefenses.
Arqit’s merger with Centricus Acquisition Corp., a publicly traded SPAC (special purpose acquisition company), values the combined group at $1.4 billion.
That makes Arqit the first space company unicorn — a startup valued more than $1 billion — to emerge from the U.K., according to Mark Boggett, CEO of venture capital firm Seraphim Capital that invested in Arqit before the transaction.
It is the “first of many new ones to come,” Boggett added.
The corporate entity for the combined company will be called Arqit Quantum Inc, headquartered in the Cayman Islands and listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange, if the deal closes as expected by the end of the third quarter of 2021. Arqit will remain a U.K. operating and tax-paying company.
U.S.-based launch startup Virgin Orbit, which is developing an air-launched rocket, injected $5 million into Arqit’s SPAC deal.
Virgin Orbit will conduct two launches for the company to low Earth orbit (LEO) beginning in 2023. It has a history of investing in startups that buy its launch services.
Investment firms Sumitomo Corporation of Japan and Heritage Group of the U.S. also participated in Arqit’s PIPE, or private investments in public equity — a mechanism for companies to raise money from a select group of investors outside the market. The PIPE secured $70 million in total.
Arqit is not disclosing who is building its satellites, which will support quantum encryption technology it calls QuantumCloud. The startup says its technology will secure communications links of any networked device against hacking, including attacks from a quantum computer.
“This transaction will give Arqit the ability to establish itself as a leader in the encryption space – the prospect of the threat from quantum computing will serve to accelerate the broad adoption of Arqit technology,” Centricus CEO Garth Ritchie said in a statement.
“This is a deep tech company which is many years ahead of the market. Arqit has protected its IP by remaining in stealth mode whilst filing over 1,000 claims on more than a dozen patent applications.”
David Williams, previously a CEO for British satellite operator Avanti Communications, heads Arqit.
U.K. space unicorn
The startup has received funding from the British government in addition to venture capital investments while it was under stealth mode.
“Arqit’s business combination transaction represents a huge moment for the UK spacetech ecosystem,” Boggett told SpaceNews in an email.
He said five-year old Arqit will be the first U.K-based space technology company to merge with a U.S. publicly listed SPAC.
Seraphim first backed Arqit in its seed round in 2018, and Boggett said it has invested in every funding round since.
Arqit’s QuantumCloud software generates an unlimited number of encryption keys at the end point of customer devices to protect against hacks.
The system currently relies on terrestrial communications infrastructure to deliver this capability from source keys that originate in data centers.
However, Arqit plans to use satellites to create a backbone of secure keys within data centers around the world.
QuantumCloud uses symmetric encryption that Arqit says is better suited for an increasingly connected world, compared with public key infrastructure (PKI) that is used to encrypt most of the world’s communications.
Its current customers include the U.K. government, European Space Agency, British telecoms company BT and Sumitomo.
Arqit said satellite operator Iridium Communications and aerospace and defense giant Northrop Grumman are among those testing its technology.
Virgin Orbit will launch the first two satellites with its LauncherOne system, set to carry a mix of defense and commercial cubesats in its next mission in June.
The LauncherOne rocket reached orbit on its second flight Jan. 17.
Virgin Orbit said it is in talks about a further set of launches after the initial program, potentially out from Spaceport Cornwall in the U.K. where it will start operations in 2022.
Arqit’s deal comes during a challenging time for the SPAC investment vehicle, which had seen a flurry of space deals before slowing down amid increasing regulatory scrutiny.
On April 12, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) released guidance on SPAC accounting practices. Specifically, these concern the treatment of warrants, which give investors the option to buy shares at specific prices in the future, in a company’s accounting books.
The move has been adding complexity and delays for many space companies looking to use SPACs for a relatively quick cash boost to support their typical sky-high project costs.
The number of new SPACs has significantly slowed down across all industries in recent weeks as businesses and investors wait to see how the changes shake out.
Virgin Orbit had reportedly been considering joining the SPAC trend before the SEC released its guidance.
Virgin Galactic, the space tourism venture that used to be its sister company, had to delay its financial results following the new guidelines. Even though Virgin Galactic completed its SPAC deal in 2019, sparking the current trend, it still has outstanding warrants in the market.
Eight space SPACs have now announced mergers since Virgin Galactic’s 2019 deal. Of these, seven aim to close this year.

The Fortnite store now allows players to buy merchandise with cryptocurrency. To many people’s surprise, it’s not Bitcoin but Monero (XMR). At the moment, Bitcoin payments are not accepted because of growing privacy concerns.
There is not a public announcement shared from Fortnite yet. The reddit post which announced Monero is now accepted in the Fortnite store however, was met very positively. Monero users say this is a positive development for all cryptocurrencies. If the most popular game in the world with more than 200 registered users is leaning towards crypto adoption, the rest will have no choice but to adapt and follow.
Fortnite is indeed incredibly popular. The Fortnite store’s currency “V-bucks”, was preferred by American teenagers over both cash and gift cards. Riccardo Spagni also shared the excitement by tweeting:

The project lead for Monero, quickly explained that the Fortnite store made its decision due to the lack of privacy. There are however, currently ongoing debates on whether or not to use Lightning Network as it restores “some” privacy to Bitcoin.
Spagni shared that Fortnite is also very interested in Lightning Network. He also said that Monero is doing their best to assure them to add it to the list. At the moment, only Monero is enabled despite the number of options at their disposal.
The Fortnite Store has done well to watch out for scandals with privacy
There is no doubt with the recent developments involving social media giants like Facebook, that privacy has become a huge priority. After many reports of user data being stolen/sold by Facebook users and developers are now very careful on how they deal with issues regarding privacy.
This shouldn’t come as a surprise. Facebook and other social media giants were revealed to sell users’ personal data for years and people are right to be outraged. This is why cryptocurrencies like Monero and Zcash are highly preferred among regular crypto users. The high level of anonymity for both users and their transactions is something very important in today’s day and age.
Of course Big Brother is already on the case as last month, the US Department of Homeland Security announced the development of a monitoring framework which will be used to track both Zcash and Monero transactions. This will be done by a blockchain-based forensic analytics program.
According to the United States government, the move is done in order to ensure cryptocurrencies are not used as money-laundering, tax evasion and terrorist funding.

Calling All Gamers: Razer Wants You to Mine Cryptocurrency Using Idle GPUs
Razer, the multi-billion-dollar gaming equipment manufacturer, released a new program that allows gamers to easily utilize their idle GPUs to mine cryptocurrency. The catch to this seemingly simple program, however, is that users don’t actually get to keep the cryptocurrency they mine.
Razer Releases Cryptocurrency Mining Software Called SoftMiner
The new program, called SoftMiner, allows PC users to utilize their expensive GPUs while they are not using their computers, whether that be while they are at school, sleeping, or at work, and in exchange Razer rewards them with something called “Razer Silver.”
The San Francisco and Singapore-based tech company announced the program in a tweet earlier this morning, marketing their new program as a way to earn rewards for doing “nothing at all.”
“Have a gaming rig on idle at home? Here’s a new way to score Razer Silver: launch Razer SoftMiner on your PC and start racking up Silver—one step closer to the reward you want, for doing nothing at all.”
Once the software is downloaded, it will automatically activate the PC’s GPU when the computer is not in use and will disburse Razer Silver rewards depending on how much cryptocurrency is mined over a set period of time. Razer has not specified which cryptocurrency will be mined.
A Good Deal for Razer, But not a Good Deal for Users
Although SoftMiner seems like a simple way for users to obtain rewards points that can be exchanged for “coveted Razer rewards like our latest peripherals, games, discount vouchers, and more,” users could run mining software themselves and cash out their cryptocurrency for fiat currency.
Razer claims that with the proper set-up, users can generate up to 500 Razer Silver credits per 24-hour period, which basically amounts to $1.67 per day worth of rewards based on a $5 Razer reward costing 1,500 credits.
The comments on the Razer SoftMiner announcement on Twitter signal that nobody is too excited about this new program.
One user wrote “Seriously? This is an early April fools joke right?” While another user referenced the high cost of electricity incurred while mining cryptocurrency, saying “I’m just going to need to forward my electricity bill to you [Razer] every month and have you pay it.”
Another user criticized the “trade deal” Razer is offering users, calling it the “worst trade deal in the history of trade deals, maybe ever.”
Asus and Quantumcloud recently released a similar program that allows gamers to mine cryptocurrency using their idle graphics cards, although their program allows users to cash out the proceeds (minus a fee) to either their PayPal or WeChat accounts.
Although it is clear that SoftMiner isn’t the best deal for users, it does signal a growing trend for tech companies who are looking to generate additional income through mining cryptocurrency.
Programs like SoftMiner and the one being offered by Asus may also introduce more people to the crypto markets and could act as a gateway that leads gamers into the world of cryptocurrency mining.

The Daily: Asus Wants to Turn Gamers Into Miners, Wyoming Advances Crypto Bank Bill
In today’s edition of The Daily, we look at the effect of cryptocurrency on video gaming, banking laws and popular media. A leading PC manufacturer wants to enable gamers to mine, a U.S. state has passed a bill to create dedicated financial institutions for cryptocurrency startups, and Bitcoin is on TV again.

Asus Teams Up With Mining Startup
Asus has announced a new strategic partnership with Quantumcloud, a startup that wants gamers to use their idle graphics cards to mine cryptocurrency. The graphics card maker can leverage its large user base of clients as a distribution partner for the app.
Quantumcloud claims to be different than other mining apps by focusing on data security and ease of use. It promises to protect user data and comply with the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) regulations. It does not require users to create new accounts for the app, as they can log in with their existing accounts on Paypal or the popular Chinese messaging app Wechat. Wallet management, cryptocurrency mining mix, currency conversions and fiat transfers are also integrated into the back-end of the software.
Wyoming Adopts Crypto Banking Bill
Members of the Wyoming State Legislature have passed a bill that sets the stage for the creation of dedicated financial institutions to provide services to cryptocurrency companies. The legislation is meant to help with the establishment of crypto companies in the state, as they often struggle to secure financial services from traditional banks.
The bill talks about creating “special purpose depository institutions,” as news.Bitcoin.com reported when it was drafted. They could be licensed as money transmitters in Wyoming and provide exchange services for both cryptocurrency and fiat funds. Each institution would have to open a branch in the state and operate within the federal banking system. Clients would be obliged to maintain 100 percent cash reserves to match their digital money accounts, and hold a minimum balance of $100,000 in fiat or cryptocurrency.
Cryptocurrency Featured on Jeopardy
Bitcoin is appearing more and more in popular culture outside the news media, including references in rap music lyrics and TV shows. The latest example is the inclusion of “Cryptocurrencies” as a category on a recent episode of trivia game show Jeopardy. According to commenters on Reddit, the Jeopardy contestants waited until the end to pick the category, but all of them answered correctly.
If you want to test your basic knowledge of the subject, the clues were: An altcoin is any unit of cryptocurrency other than this original one; A lawsuit from this rapper killed off the Coinye currency; Each transaction is a “block” connected in these digital ledgers that enable cryptocurrencies to work; This three-letter chat app created its own currency, the very similarly named KIN; In 2018, this South American country launched the Petro, a currency backed by oil reserves.

Governments ally for federated quantum encryption satellite network

TAMPA, Fla. — The United States and five other countries are banding together with the United Kingdom to develop a satellite-based quantum technology encryption network.
The Federated Quantum System (FQS) will be based on the one British startup Arqit is developing for commercial customers, using quantum technology breakthroughs to guard against increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks.
But while that network is on a managed services platform run by Arqit, FQS will be closed off in a way that enables interoperability between allied countries.
Fighter jets and other military units and command and control centers would be able to share communications more securely across a sovereign-controlled network.
The governments of Japan, Canada, Italy, Belgium and Austria are also partnering on the initiative, which includes companies from each country to design and test the system.
Those commercial partners include British telco BT, U.S. aerospace giant Northrop Grumman, Japanese investment firm Sumitomo, Italian technology group Leonardo and Austrian quantum technology startup QTL.
The Canadian and Belgian subsidiaries of aerospace company Honeywell and defense technology firm Qinetiq, respectively, have also joined.
The cost of the project including an initial satellite in 2023 is expected to be more than $70 million, funded by the consortium’s government and commercial partners.
They will also have the option to buy a dedicated version at a cost of around $250 million over 10 years.
Arqit is lining up Virgin Orbit to launch the first FQS satellites in 2023 from the U.K., after it orbits a pair of spacecraft for its commercial counterpart that year.
Virgin Orbit, an air-launched rocket startup nearing the launch of its first payload for commercial customers, earlier invested in Arqit as part of the quantum venture’s merger with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC).
Arqit expects to raise $400 million from that deal once it closes in the third quarter of this year.
The startup plans to make the first version of its QuantumCloud software available in July.
The software generates an unlimited number of encryption keys at the end point of customer devices, and will rely on terrestrial communications until its satellites are launched.
Arqit says using quantum computing technology for symmetric encryption is more secure than systems based on public key infrastructure (PKI), which is used to encrypt most of the world’s communications.
Another conflict?
It is unclear what the European Union will make of Italy, Belgium and Austria’s participation in Arqit’s FQS.
The three countries — and all EU members apart from Ireland — have signed up to plans to develop a European quantum communications network called EuroQCI.
Airbus said May 31 it secured a contract from the European Commission to lead a consortium to study the quantum technology-powered network for Europe.
Leonardo is part of the 15-month study group, along with accountancy firm PwC France and Maghreb, French telecoms giant Orange and Italy’s CNR research council and NRiM meteorological institute.
Telespazio, a joint venture between Leonardo and French aerospace group Thales, is also part of the group.
An EU official recently suggested there may be a conflict of interest arising from French satellite operator Eutelsat’s $500 million investment in OneWeb in April.
Eutelsat is part of a separate consortium that has been studying a new satellite broadband constellation for the European Union since December.
