Then practice farther, losing farther: places, and names, and where it was you meant to travel. None of this will bring disaster. I lost my mother's watch. And look! my last, or next-to-last, of three loved houses went. The art of losing isn't hard to master. 

I lost two cities, lovely ones. And, vaster, some realms I owned, two rivers, a continent, I miss them, but it wasn't a disaster. 

Even losing you (the joking voice, a gesture I love) I shan't have lied. It's evident the art of losing's not too hard to master though it may look like (Write it!) like disaster.

That post from the other day about the sense of foreshortened future mentioned not getting in relationships, because why bother if you’re not going to be around? And that got me thinking - like, I’m sure some of my issues with relationships is other #trauma stuff, and some of them are just being some flavour of aro, but... yeah, there’s definitely also the feeling of, well, why even invest the effort when you can’t promise anyone a future?

My attitude to relationships and mushy feelings and things is basically, well, I often love people more than is appropriate for a friendship, and I can’t actually stop that from happening, so I kinda have to live with it. On the other hand, I can never love the right people, so it’s not really worth focusing on or thinking about or bringing up ever; you just kinda go, okay, well, that sure is a feeling, and put it in a box and try to forget about it.

That’s a difficult knot to unpick. To some extent, it’s just true; I am bad at making myself have feelings for people I don’t like, or not have feelings for people I do. To some extent, it’s also probably because I can’t really imagine anyone caring back; that’s just not how life works. I’m always second - or, more realistically, tenth or fiftieth or whatever - to people I care about, if they even know I exist. That feels like a law of nature to me; it’s almost certainly not, but it’s very much a Life Experience(tm) thing. If something always goes a certain way - well, it always goes a certain way! What’s the point of expending effort just on the offchance that it won’t? (When I was younger, I saw this as a law of nature even in friendships: the people you like will never like you, and the people who seem to like you are not the people you like. I’m getting better at closing this gap nowadays.)

And to some extent it’s definitely also that I feel like I don’t really have much to offer. I’m disabled, I have a hard time taking care of myself let alone trying to care for an entire other human, I don’t feel like I have a future and trying to secure a present is difficult enough, I’m fucked up and have weird stupid reactions to stuff - theoretically I know that people work this shit out, but yeah, that definitely affects some of my thinking.

(This also absolutely mixes in with the whole #QueerFuturity stuff - like, the futures that are available and visible for us, two lesbians with high-powered careers and a picket fence and a dog, really don’t include me. Don’t get me wrong - it’s great that we can advance at least that far. But we still have a ways to go.)

I think I would be a lot more panicked about moving to Japan if I had any felt sense that the future is real.

Rationally, I know that the future exists and I plan for it, but I have no gut feeling that it will actually happen, if that makes any sense.

(This is 100% a trauma feel related to coping with living in wildly volatile situations for most of my life, but at this point it’s very irritating and also getting in the way of my #queerfuturity aesthetic.)
