A Jealous Tango (The Writer and The Photographer, Harry Holland x Reader) - Chapter Five

Hi everyone! Here is chapter five sorry it took so long, but nonetheless I hope you enjoy! Also the lack of Harry gifs is disturbing... Let me know if you want to be added to the taglist! 

Summary: Harry and (Y/N) go to the mall where much to Harry’s dismay a pretty girl catches a lot of unwanted attention.

Kingston, England was on the verge of June, the warmth of the summer months beginning to stick, and Harry was happy? He felt like the word did little to sum up how he felt but everything was going well, he did not feel that gaping hole in his chest anymore. The vast black hole had seemed to vanish and the British boy had a sneaking suspicion on why.

Knocking on the dark blue door beforehand, Harry let himself into the neighbor’s flat. It had become a regular occurence, for the curly haired boy to let himself in over the past few weeks, his knocks were always drowned out by the blaring tunes. Kicking off his converse Harry tiptoed into the oddly silent house searching for any signs of life. At the white dining room table sat Hayley in a pair of sweatpants and what looked to be an old high school t-shirt, editing a book cover on her laptop. “Hey” She greeted her eyes barely lifting from the brightly lit screen.

 “Hey” Harry responded, scratching the back of his head as his eyes scanned the downstairs for a particular brunette. It’s not that he did not like the twin girls, in fact he got along with them quite well, many of the days and nights of the month of May spent over here. Harry had practically become their fourth roommate and first official British friend. It was just he had plans with one in particular today. 

“She’s upstairs.” Hayley laughed watching Harry’s roaming eyes. 

The boy spun back to face her, “Wha- I didn’t even ask where she was?” The one twin only remained silent, lifting her eyebrows into a ‘seriously’ look, a look which caused a faint blush to appear on Harry’s neck and cheeks.

 “She’s ‘writing’” Hayley added, her hands lifting from the keyboard to do air quotes as she said “writing.” 

Furrowing his eyebrows, Harry gave her a questioning look, “What does that mean?” He mimicked her air quotes. And as if on queue loud thumping was heard from ceiling, Hayley only snickering too herself. “Oh you’ll see.”

Trekking up the stairs Harry heard the faint sound of the thumping again and what he believed to be singing. At the top of the stairs were three white doors, one door to his right was cracked open slightly. He approached the door, the door that led to her room, knocking slightly before poking his head in. The humorous sight on display in front of him had Harry covering his mouth to hide his laughter. (Y/N) clad in black pjs, which to his luck included a pair of shorts, was dancing around her room wildly. Her headphones were in as she twirled and jumped around singing along to the song.

 “Ob la di, ob-la-da, life goes on, bra. La-la, how the life goes on. Ob-la di, ob-la-da, life goes on, bra. La-la, how the life goes on!” She shouted into her imaginary fist of a microphone, eyes closed and completely oblivious to the other person now in her bedroom. A malicious smile worked its way onto Harry’s face, she was practically asking for it. Quietly sneaking up behind her, Harry outstretched his hands ready to attack. (Y/N) continued on in her blissful ignorance, still shouting out the words to the song.

 Her arms shot up as the chorus came giving Harry the perfect opportunity to quickly grab her sides. A loud shriek escaped (Y/N)’s lips, eyes wide in horror as she spun to find Harry laughing and clutching at his chest.  “You fucker!” She screamed, ripping off her headphones, Harry only staggering back to fall onto her neatly made bed. (Y/N) only stood there trying to rein in her racing heartbeat, giving Harry a look that could kill. 

“The Beatles really?” 

“I hate you.” She deadpanned, ignoring his question, and lightly punching his arm. 

“I’m sorry, it was too perfect of an opportunity to give up!” (Y/N) rolled her eyes setting her headphones down onto her desk, still a bit startled. Propping himself up on her bed, Harry eyed her pajamas once again, “Did you forget we are going out today?” For the second time this morning, (Y/N)’s eyes widened. 

“Um..No?” (Y/N) grinned sheepishly at the boy, she had been attempting to get into the writing mood, but had gotten sidetracked. Harry rolled his eyes feigning annoyance but, his large smile betrayed him. 

“Hurry up and get dressed!” (Y/N) gave him a quick innocent smile before rushing into her bathroom with a pile of clothes tucked into her arms.

The Westfield Mall was… overwhelming. Sure (Y/N) had been to the Mall of America, but that was familiar places. As she walked around Westfield, eyes scanning the stores, she realized hadn’t even heard of half of them. Harry had been showing her around, introducing her to new stores for the past hour. The two were quite simply just having fun and enjoying each other’s company.

 “So did you always write or was it something you just stumbled upon?” Harry pondered as he took a large sip from his drink. (Y/N) peeled her eyes away from the patterns on the tile floor, her eyes falling onto his. Both of their hearts leaping just a tiny bit. 

“I think I was always meant to tell stories in some way or another. When I was little, before I could even write full sentences, I would create these little books of just drawings and I would tell stories based on the images to my classmates.” Harry laughed at that, earning him that shy smile of hers that was always destroying his heart piece by piece. “When I got into my early teens, I started writing fanfiction.” Harry lifted an eyebrow at that. “Don’t you say a word!” (Y/N) giggled into the palm of her hand before continuing. “So yes, I guess writing, storytelling, was always in the works for me.” Harry nodded imagining a little (Y/N), pigtails and wide eyes telling stories to the other toothless children in her classroom. 

“Is there a music store in here?” (Y/N) questioned as she swung her bags back and forth, in between her and Harry. “Ye-” Harry’s response was cut off by a high pitched squeal, piercing through the mall nearby. (Y/N) and Harry shared a concerned look before identifying the source, two teenage girls in their school uniforms. The two girls were wide eyed gawking at them from the other side of the hall.

 “Uh-Oh.” 

Harry muttered bracing himself for the ambush. Ever since Tom had risen to fame, Harry started getting noticed just for being Spiderman’s brother. He even had his own fanbase… The girls rushed over, shoes clacking heavily against the white tile.

 “Oh my god, it’s you!” One girl gushed her cheeks burning. 

Harry went to speak up when the second girl interrupted him, “I, well we absolutely love your book!” Harry’s jaw snapped back up in surprise, looking over to a grinning (Y/N). Sometimes he forgot she was famous. 

“Awe thank you!” (Y/N) responded making the girl’s giggle at the difference in accents. 

“Your book really helped me to embrace myself and my inner crazy. It helped me realize that it's okay to be different.” The first girl added. (Y/N)’s eyes shone in admiration, she would never get over hearing how her book had helped others. The book that had taught her to heal was now helping others, it was beautiful. 

“I’m so glad, would you like a picture?” The two girls nodded rapidly, the second retrieving her phone from her purse. “Well perhaps my trusty photographer can take the photo?” 

The girls finally looked over to Harry, eyes widening even more. “Harry Holland!” The girl handed him her phone, both of their eyes flickering back and forth between the Harry and (Y/N). “Are you two friends?” The girls both smirked.

 (Y/N) moved to stand in between the two girls, a large smile on her face. “Yeah, It’s a pretty small world isn’t it?”

(Y/N) and Harry continued on heading towards the music store, conveniently located on the other side of the shopping center. “You know it’s really nice meeting fans…” (Y/N) sighed, trailing off. 

“Yeah?” Harry pushed, of course he knew how amazing it was, but he sensed there was more to her statement. 

“I-I always felt like an outsider growing up, didn’t really fit in with the crowds. Things got better after I met the twins in high school, but I was still different. It warms my heart hearing from people that I, little ol’ me, helped them accept their differences and appreciate it.” Harry offered her a small smile. 

“I know what you mean, I still struggle with feeling on the outside, especially after Tom. Everyone does a great job of making sure my brothers and I don’t feel that way, but sometimes you can’t help feeling like your standing in his shadow. But I don’t feel that with you.” Harry would never admit it, but he felt like he was standing in the blistering hot sun when he was with her, no shadows to be found.

The two split up once they were inside the music store, (Y/N) hunting down a John Williams record while Harry sorted through the CD’s. He did not pay much mind to her until he heard a deep “Hi” echo throughout the store. Harry’s head instinctively lifted searching for the origin of the greeting, finding something much to his dismay. A tall brunette worker stood in front of (Y/N), grinning down at her. Harry stood up straight, the CD’s he was ransaking through now forgotten. He watched as the guy flirted shamelessly with (Y/N), who in return only smiled back. Maybe she was just being polite or maybe she thought he was cute. Whatever the case, Harry’s stomach dropped as he continued to watch the events unfold.

 “You’re American? That’s so cool!” He could not handle it anymore, he could not allow for it to get out of hand. What if he asked for her number? Harry quickly zigzagged through the aisles of music, stopping once he was in front of (Y/N). 

“Hey,” Harry pushed himself in between the tall brunette and his favorite American, “Um… your… Aunt… Jemima called she needs our help!” And with that, Harry wooshed (Y/N) out of the music store, her record hunt being abandoned. 

“Harry!” (Y/N) called in protest, but he only continued to guide her out into the main hall of the mall. “My Aunt Jemima? The syrup lady? What the hell was that about?” (Y/N) demanded once they were far enough from the store. She could almost laugh at his excuse, but she was not sure as to why he felt the need to use it. 

“I was saving you from that asshole back there.” Harry simply stated as they walked towards the exit.

 “What? Harry he was only helping me find my record!” 

He rolled his eyes at that, “Oh please! Helping my ass!” (Y/N) scoffed crossing her arms, her bags whacking Harry slightly.

 “Oh so what about the girl at the burrito place? Was she just helping make your burrito?” Harry’s head whipped over to look at her, eyebrows furrowed in confusion.

 “This is different, she was just doing her job.” (Y/N) laughed at that, head dropping back for dramatics. 

“Oh did her job include being all over you and not so subtle winks?” That silenced Harry, he did not recall the girl being over the top like that. His attention had been elsewhere… 

“I didn’t notice.” 

(Y/N) sighed once again, uncrossing her arms. “I swear on everything, I’m going to kick your ass when we get home.” Harry smirked, nudging his shoulder into hers. 

“Oh… I’m getting a little excited!” (Y/N) bit back a laugh, both of the friends returning to their previous calm and joyful moods. Neither one wanting to admit that there bickering had been about the jealousy growing inside them. 

“Stop or else I’ll have to call Aunt Jemima.”

Crawford Connection

A look back at the night my brother and I birthed a holiday tradition in Ocean Beach.  Rich would have been in the Crawford Class of '64 and I was in '63. Ron James, Class of 1963

Ocean Beach’s crooked Christmas tree a community tradition

Every year turning the corner into December, a crane is used to transplant a huge pine tree from somewhere in the area to the beach near the pier.

“The tree comes from a home in OB, and this year we moved it down on Tuesday, Nov. 29, and put it in the ground,” said Corey Bruins, president of Ocean Beach Town Council, who added, “We’re excited because it’s going to be fun to get it all decorated, a process that starts around 7 a.m. and takes into the early afternoon.”

As usual, police escorted the truck carrying the tree through the community to the foot of Newport Avenue, where a sleeve, or manhole in the sand, had been uncovered and cleaned out, especially for it.

Once the tree was settled and placed into the sleeve, it was time to put the electrical wiring in place and add the lights, topping it with a star. Soon to follow were blown-up beach ball decorations hung on the tree.

Every year on a Saturday after the tree is planted, this year on Dec. 3, children from local schools will make their annual pilgrimage there to see Santa from 9 a.m. to noon. They will add their own hand-made ornaments to hang on the tree.

The Ocean Beach holiday season kicks off this year on the evening of Dec. 3 with one of the most beloved traditions in San Diego, the lighting of the Christmas tree on the beach at the foot of Newport Avenue. Now in its 43rd year, the tree’s shining moment, its lighting at 5:05 p.m. that night, ushers in the annual Ocean Beach Holiday Parade, this year themed “Jingle All The Waves,” with more than 10,000 attendees drawn to partake in the festivities.

Bruins pointed out that the Christmas tree planting ritual in OB dates back to the five James brothers – Ron, Rich, Greg, Mike, and Pat – whose family founded the James Gang Graphics company on Newport Avenue in 1976. They were the ones who brought down the first Christmas tree from Mt. Shasta.

“At some point, we started sourcing the tree locally,” noted Bruins adding, “We have trees already in the queue that need to be cut down because they’re in a dangerous position on their property, or have a root system that is tearing up the sidewalks. We’re always looking for local trees that are going to come down anyway, so as not to have to transport it far in order to keep the cost (of moving) down.”

ORIGIN OF THE OB CHRISTMAS TREE

Mike James, who currently is involved in Luminosity, a long-term project to find a viable high-tech alternative to launching Fourth of July fireworks from aging OB Pier, related the tale of how the community’s very first Newport Avenue Christmas tree got chosen to inaugurate the tree-planting tradition on Newport.

“One evening, in the fall of 1980, my brothers Ron and Rich were having a few beers at the Sunshine Company Saloon,” said James noting that earlier that year, Ocean Beach had its first community-supported Fourth of July Fireworks Festival. “The brothers began talking about what could be done to continue that positive community spirit for the upcoming Christmas holidays,” James said. “Rich mentioned the famous Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center (in New York City) and thought maybe OB could have its own community Christmas tree.”

Added James: “The story goes that at first, they talked about a 20-foot tall tree. Then, as more beer was consumed, the proposed tree grew, so by the end of the night it became a 60-foot tall tree.”

The next morning said James, continuing the narrative, “Rich began making phone calls to find out how someone could get a 60-foot tree. He finally found the people that supplied Disneyland with their giant Christmas tree and made an order. A committee was formed and money was  raised to pay for the tree and the lights by mainly selling commemorative T-shirts.”

“To save cost, Rich talked his friend Kenny into taking his semi truck to Mt. Shasta to pick up the tree,” said James. “They returned to Ocean Beach with a stunning 70-foot Star Pine to grace the beach at the foot of Newport Avenue.”

Which is almost – but not quite – the end of James’ story.

“A few days after the tree had arrived, Rich went to numerous bars up and down Newport and handed out kazoos to his many friends,” he said. “They then assembled in front of Pacific Shores, and Rich then led them down the middle of the street to the tree, while they hummed Christmas carols on their kazoos.” *Reposted article from sdnews.com by Dave Schwab of December 1, 2022

Oh no, my poor bunny! I’m SO FUCKING SORRY that you are dealing with this! I have BEEN there and I know how much it hurts <3 I don’t know how he’s contacting you, but mine kept finding ways to text me so i’m going with that. I’m jumping the queue with this one because it hit me right in the feels.  

This was your favourite part of being with Rick.

Sure the adventures were thrilling, and terrifying, and fun beyond your wildest dreams. You never thought you would be so lucky to explore not just space, but every facet of reality. However, it was coming down from the post adventure high that gave you the most joy. Just the simple pleasure of curling up with Rick on the couch and watching interdimensional cable while he laughed, and belched, and rested a comforting hand on your thigh.

You were both engrossed in the latest episode of Ball Fondlers when you felt your phone buzz. It was simply a reflex for you to swipe the screen and check your notifications. Your stomach dropped.

You just barely made it, locking the door and collapsing on the floor with a choking sob. Things were good now. Why couldn’t he just leave you alone.?

Tears started flowing freely.

You jumped when you heard bannging on the door.

“H-Heeey! What the - why are you s-still in there?!” it was Rick. “You know - You know I don’t just let any*ERUGGH*one watch this shit? Do-Do you know what would happen if the fucking FCC found out about this? I would -I -…” he trailed off. “Are- are you crying in there?”

“N-no! Go away Rick!” you lied, obviously sobbing.

“You - You’re crying! What - why are you crying?  L-let me in there!”

“No Rick!”

“Jesus Christ, FINE!” you could hear him rolling his eyes.

Good he was leaving.

You jumped when a neon green glow filled the bathroom and Rick stepped out of a swirling portal.

“Y-y-you..” You stuttered.

“Have a f-fucking portal gun baby. You think a locked door is gonna stop me?” he quirked an eyebrow at you, “Now tell me what the hell is wrong?”

He nodded to your phone, “Some-someone bothering you?”

“N-no it’s nothing. Really.  I’m fine.” you weren’t sure if you were trying to convince yourself or him.

Rick scoffed, “You are so ob-obviously far from ‘FINE’ that the planet you’re on doesn’t even have a word for ‘FINE’ in their vocabulary.”

He reached his hand out for the phone “Give it to me.”

You sniffled at him and handed it over.

He unlocked it with his finger print (of course he had given himself access to your phone!) and started scrolling through your texts, his frown deepening.

When he had finished he looked back up to you. “Who the fuck is this creep?”

“My ex” you whispered.

“Wellll I can seeeeee why! Shit what a desperate fucking lo*ERUGGH*ser!” he waved the phone at you. “He - does he do this to you like a lot?”

You nodded at him, not trusting your voice.

Rick frowned and went back to your phone, tapping the screen and mumbling to himself.  He grunted in satisfaction and whipped out his portal gun and shot a green vortex into the bathroom wall.

“Back in a sec, babe!” he chirped as he stepped through taking your phone with him.

“Wait Rick, I—” you started, but he was gone. You just stared into the empty space where he had been a few seconds ago. After a few more minutes had passed you stood up to run some cold water over your puffy face.

Ten more minutes and the bathroom glowed green again and Rick returned. He was dusting off his lab coat and you could hear… Crying?… pouring out of the portal behind him before it closed.

“Well,” he ran a hand through his spiky blue hair, “That f-fucker won’t - won’t  be bothering you any more!” he tossed your phone back to you.

Your lower lip trembled, “Thanks, Rick.”

“Shiiiit,” he shot you a lopsided grin, “Comere, babe.”

You went to him and he enveloped you in his arms, tucking your head under his chin, and rubbing soothing circles on your back. Your breath hitched, more tears threatening to return.

“Shhh, shh, shh.” he hushed into your hair, “It’s alllll good, baby.” He kissed the top of your head, “Next - Next time something like t-this happens, you tell me. Got it?”

You nodded into his chest. “I will.”

“G-good!” he gave you another squeeze before letting you go. “Now let-lets go watch TV!”

OCR World Championships 2019 3K Report

Last year’s OCR World Championships saw some of the most glorious weather you could hope to see in October. Could we be that lucky 2 years in a row??!! In a word...No. It was colder, wetter and muddier than last year and those elements combined to make this a very different race.

With the injury plagued season I had last year I had worked hard on my pre-hab and very slowly increased my mileage across the year. Following the 2018 World Championships I’d been experiencing shoulder pain which limited the amount of hanging work I could do. In fact it hampered many elements of my training and was finding it hard to bench press or bicep curl without pain. This turned out to be a mixture of biceps tendinitis and rotator cuff instability. It took roughly 4 months of physio and rehab to sort this. Everything was going great until knee pain reared its ugly head again around July. With no chance to take time out to properly sort the issue I agreed with my physio that damage limitation was the key, I needed to go into the event with as little knee pain as possible. This meant very reduced running mileage which I made up for in functional obstacle training over longer periods and walk/run/bike sessions to get ‘time on feet’.

The 3K was a short but obstacle heavy course. It was certainly more technical than last year’s 3k. Before my race I managed to watch some of my wife Jo’s race. Seeing many competitors struggling with some of the obstacles in the rain was worrying me but I needed to focus. I’d been out on a walk of the course with Team UK the day before so I knew my race plan and how I was going to attack each obstacle.

With the 3k each age group are set off in waves of  around 10 competitors to ensure the course doesn't get any queues. Having agreed to film the pro waves for the official live stream a short time after my finish I wanted to be near the front. I stood in the start pen next to my good friend Stuart ‘El Capitan’ Neail who had cleared the final obstacle at the same time as me the year before. 

This year there was little pre-amble from Spartan Phil and we were off. The first few obstacles were designed to drain you and spread the field. A set of ditches into a tyre pit and then Monty’s Hurdles. These are a set of wooden hurdles around chest height that you have to go over and ensure your feet touch the ground in between each hurdle. There are around 10 of them and they take it out of you! 

Next up was the first technical obstacle, the first Force 5 Rig .

This was a fairly simple obstacle with some pivoting holds and rings to swing across but a nice obstacle to warm up on. After another Nuclear Races obstacle ‘La Gaffe’ it was a little run up through the woods to meet the first proper rig -The Nuclear Nitro Rig. This was a a rig of various holds and ropes. It wasn't particularly difficult or grip sapping but it was fiddly and I’m not sure there was a graceful way of completing it. I got it done going for safety rather than speed.

After a little A frame it was into the huge tent for one of the new signature obstacles, Valkyrie. This was a a set of rings going up and down that you can only traverse with your hands. Watching the earlier waves I noticed many missing out rings on the way down so this was my plan as well, my thinking being the less time spent hanging the better. This is largely a strength based obstacle but good technique can make it easier. I flew up and missed a couple of rings on the way down as planned. Damn that was fun!

Being a short course there was no let up now, following Valkyrie it was straight into another new signature grip obstacle, the wonderfully named Sabretooth. This was a set of monkey bars that went up and down twice and it was long! Earlier in the day it had rained and I'd seen many racers struggle with this obstacle. I decided on using a side on technique on the incline sections for safety. This meant I could clamp my hands on either side of each bar which meant there was less chance of slipping off. Thankfully the rain held off for my wave and I sailed through.

I knew this section would be intense but wow! Straight in to another rig! The Force 5 Rig 2 had a variety of T-bar attachments which pivoted and a spinning wheel to finish. I’d been planning my approach since I’d seen some photos of this obstacle a week or so before. The key element was the flat T-bar before the wheel which swung towards you. My plan was to reach to the furthest part with my stronger hand and pull it towards me. Then once I had a firm grip I’d 2-tap (quickly grab with my other hand) before grabbing the wheel with an alternating grip. No hesitation, just go! Swing, swing, swing, grab the wheel, hit the bell, ding!

This section was always going to be demanding with so many grip obstacles in a row but I was feeling good. I’d managed my heart rate in the run up to the village to ensure I was in a position to hit each obsatcle running. With barely 10 seconds of running it was into another new obstacle, the Force 5 Low rig. Last year there were complaints that the low rig was far too easy, consisting of a bar to ring to bar. So this year they upped their game by bringing a more technical low rig. This was a lot of fun. I’d decided to go head on the whole way which worked out well but required some real core strength to keep my legs from dropping to the ground on the final transition.

Next up was the new obstacle everyone was talking about in the run up to the event. The Gibbon Experience. This consisted of 5 swinging metal holds where you had to move along using 2 dowels that fitted into each hold. Essentially like keeping hold of monkey bars and placing them in each hold. This was a totally new obstacle that no one bar those at the North American Championships (where this had debuted) had attempted. Not wanting to try this for the first time in a race I’d ordered a set from obstacle builder Foz Sug. This was a tricky obstacle as it involves hanging on a single arm on a bar that can twist. This causes your hand to open up and your grip to fail quickly. So over a 2 month period I’d been practicing hanging on a single arm from one gibbon hold until my grip failed. Once I felt confident holding onto a twisting bar I worked on my technique. It became clear that swinging like you usually would on monkey bars wouldn’t work, it puts too much force through your hanging arm. So the key was a very controlled movement to place the bar into the hold with light fingers. Watching the footage from the North American Championships the majority of racers used a technique that has become known as the ‘Chicken Wing’. This involves hooking your elbows over the bars rather than hanging from it by your hands. This allows you to complete the obstacle if you don’t have the grip strength but it hurts so I had no plans to use this unless absolutely necessary.

I approached the obstacle and took a moment to collect myself. I really wanted to nail this first time. I took two wooden dowels and placed the first one into a hold. I swung out and placed the next one first time. So far so good. I then swung to the third hold but just missed it. I was left hanging on one arm, not where I wanted to be! I stayed calm as I prepared for this scenario. I tried again and got one end of the dowel in the hold. The other end was precariously placed on the edge of the hold but not properly seated. One wrong move and it would fall out and I’d be likely needing to drop and start again. Thankfully I managed to manoeuvre it into the hold. I seated the 4th first time which left one final hold. I decided to get a good swing and reach for the bell from the 4th hold, missing out the final one. Ding! Success!

Next up was another new obstacle Force 5 over and Under. This was a very simple idea but made for an enjoyable obstacle. The premise was simple, start on top, go under and end up on top.

Then it was into Triumph, this was 2 dragons backs into an under and up net climb. The Nuclear dragons backs are nice and close together and you only really need to lean out to grab the bar (although if you are afraid of heights that’s easier said than done). This one had a serious gap to jump, add to that the fact that the bar was pretty low and this was more than just a mental obstacle to overcome. 2 leaps of faith and a crawl under and up the cargo net and ding, the bell was rung.

Next up was an improved version of Skitch. Skitch debuted at the Worlds last year and consisted of 2 handheld hooks that you hang from and traverse along a bar which has a chain attached to the middle where you need to unhook each hook and transition to the other side of the chain. They clearly decided that this wasn’t hard enough so this year added a second transition. Thankfully I had practiced this and managed to clear it first time.

Not more than 30 seconds of running and it was into Skull Valley. This was a new version and arguably easier than last year’s obstacle. It had a really fun flow and was really enjoyable to complete.

After smashing the Ninja Rings there was a short run through the wood to the next obstacle, the aptly named Snaked Pit. This took a page out of Hang-on Run’s book in that it was lots of ropes. I missed out every other rope and remembered Coach Scotty’s advice to get as high as possible on the rope traverse to ensure I didn’t end up sitting on the knot of the next rope.

A short carry and then it was onto a new balance obstacle which was simple enough. A weaver and some tubes to slide down and it was over the final wall to the finish line. I crossed in 56th place out of 189 which put me in top 30%. Could I have pushed harder on the running between obstacles? Possibly, but would I then have cleared each obstacle first time? That’s the balance of obstacle course racing. In any case I felt strong on all the obstacle and most of all, I enjoyed myself!

3weeks in NYSC Orientation Camp seems like such a long time, but it can feel way longer and unbearable when you arrive unprepared.

Now you are done with registration and your call up and state of deployment has been released. These are the actual things you will be needing.

Things you will need

3 pairs of white shorts: this is because when you arrive camp, NYSC gives 2 extra shorts. (If you are really plus size , then buy 5 or 6 comfortable white shorts before you arrive. This is because NYSC gives 2 pairs of uniform free size shorts. I am a size 12 and mine was just as fine as it was on a size 8, maybe firmer and shorter, but it worked

3 pairs of white round neck T-shirt: 2 extra will be given, but it's better you buy your preferred texture of white T-shirts.

A pair of white rubber canvas: There is always an activity going on and most are mandatory, rubber canvas is easier to clean and good for any weather. Notwithstanding, Nysc will also give you white tennis shoes when you arrive.

Disposable underwear: Washing isn't the problem, drying is. Save yourself the hassle and buy 4 packs of sets of 6 to be safe.

Sanitary towels: Either pads or tampons. Remember you will be on white most times, so purchase your safest and most trusted option.

Sunscreen: lectures, parade, sports and other activities. All these will be performed outdoor. Our nation is a tropical region so no matter the state and season, the sun will be out to play from time to time. It is important that you strap yourself with some sunscreen to protect you from sunburn.

Antiperspirant, Deodorants: your 3 weeks in camp will very active. Buy antiperspirants to keep you feeling fresh all day long.

Towel and toiletries: soap, sponge, toilet paper etc.

Sun shades: to protect you from the sun.

Money- 40,000 - 45,000: This amount will cover your laundry, feeding and indulgence.

About Registration: if you are reading this post, don't go ahead and join the queue and rush on the first day. Chill till the second day, the people who love being early would have been done and registration will be easier and faster.

About feeding: as much as I did big girl and never had food from kitchen, if your stomach isn't very sensitive and you notice the food is edible, join the crowd and save money ( I'm a sucker for saving these days).

About friends: don't go ahead and start being an unnecessary social butterfly because half of the people you chill with in camp will be posted to local governments far away from you, so choose a few productive friends for network sake.

About health: if you have any medical condition. Whether major or minor, bring a medical report. I hate to be doubted when I complain, so I had to suck in a pain under my feet just because I didn't have any evidence.

About relationships: don't go to camp with the aim of meeting your husband to avoid getting used. Make healthy friends and let the wind blow.

About laundry: There will be ladies rendering laundry services in camp, it is better to patronize them so your clothes won't get missing or mixed up when you wash. And they deliver quickly for 50 naira per item and 100 naira for khaki.

 Things you should do

Join a faction : Red Cross, taekwondo, OBS, security committee, sport committee, parade, these are a few groups you could join when you arrive camp depending on your interest.

Play a sport: if you are not the sporty type, that's fine. If you are , don't sleep walk through the 3 weeks, there will be football, volleyball and track events as well as sport competitions.

Join a SAED(skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development): SAED is an activity created to help corpers learn a skill. There will be ICT , leather works, Ankara bag making, dress making, makeup and more. SAED classes are held for a week so be wise enough to join something you are interested in or curious about and try to grab as much as you can, so you can enroll for a more professional class at a cheaper rate.

Obey the rules: if you violate any camp rule, you will be decamped. Meaning, you can be suspended from participating in NYSC for 1 to 2 years.

Smile: it might be tough or sometimes stressful, be sure to smile through it all because a lot of people pray daily to be in your shoes.

With these few tips, you are set and ready to enjoy this beautiful one time experience.

The Day Six, Seven, and Eight: UNIVERSAL STUDIOS !!! Wake up at 8am will be enough .. fault. The freeway gets freaking jammed, we're in finish line hour later, we pay another 25 bucks, and we squeeze ourselves in the elevator that doesn’t want to close from a parking lot. The new world, the world of the scene, the actor, the special effects, and the homegrown trained dogs, open on the surface. Look, a first rollercoaster! That was great! Declared everyone. Hey another one! But one of us isn’t going, he looks sick of rollercoasters. We overtake the whole 25-minute queue in the Czech-Slovak style and take a nice fit sit in the seat. 3D racing and roller coaster conjures smile of joy and nausea in our faces. It's a great experience to see all those places, the faces, the buildings, and spots from movies and series. Atmosphere is bombastic. I could tell and spoil all of this, but it is better to see this place in your own skin! We leave satisfied with the feeling of a high quality day in Universal Studios, and the expensive ticket turns into a great choice for spending money. Los Angeles downtown, one big disappointment! The streets are broken, the houses are cracked, homeless in the streets, the smell of urine, filthiness and garbage, the shops owned by the Mexicans as well as the Vietnamese in Czechia, out of about 10 skyscrapers and one nice street there is absolutely nothing !!! You could be shot during night and dogs and rats of the stinky sewers of Los Angels will feed on you.

Advice for you all: Los Angeles downtown isn’t worth for barely look, don’t even go there, save your time!

The beaches, however, are quite a different story, story of the sun, the warm sand, the piers, the greedy seagulls, the beautiful ocean, and the playing in waves. We behave as children in the waves and we’re laughing when shorts float from nowhere, DAMN these are my! The wave punches me right in the face. A short thematic walk around Venice Beach, where street entertainers attract the watching people around to their shows and make douchebags of them, it's fun to pop out, NO, don’t take me! The last day in LA should be fast, we go to the Hollywood sign, a few pics again, but nothing special. Just Hollywood sign! For a few days we have wanted to go to an Asian restaurant but we are finally going today. What's that?! It is weird looking restaurant by the gas station, bars on the windows and door. We enter inside and there is a woman with the smile and look of Yoda. Elderly stooped lady chooses place to sit to us .. we hesitate, but we sit anyway. We order food ... HOLYSHIT it's fantastic! Vietnamese in Czech, shy! This old lady would put all of you in her little pocket, and you know what ... the best Asian lunch in LA in the middle of Hollywood!

About laundry: There will be ladies rendering laundry services in camp, it is better to patronize them so your clothes won't get missing or mixed up when you wash. And they deliver quickly for 50 naira per item and 100 naira for khaki.

 Things you should do

Join a faction : Red Cross, taekwondo, OBS, security committee, sport committee, parade, these are a few groups you could join when you arrive camp depending on your interest.

Play a sport: if you are not the sporty type, that's fine. If you are , don't sleep walk through the 3 weeks, there will be football, volleyball and track events as well as sport competitions.

Join a SAED(skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development): SAED is an activity created to help corpers learn a skill. There will be ICT , leather works, Ankara bag making, dress making, makeup and more. SAED classes are held for a week so be wise enough to join something you are interested in or curious about and try to grab as much as you can, so you can enroll for a more professional class at a cheaper rate.

Obey the rules: if you violate any camp rule, you will be decamped. Meaning, you can be suspended from participating in NYSC for 1 to 2 years.

Smile: it might be tough or sometimes stressful, be sure to smile through it all because a lot of people pray daily to be in your shoes.
