Falling in love is as simple as romancing the moon. It’s never constant. Every month, affection waxes and wanes. Scientists would peg this phenomenon as unreliable and requires additional testing. So why do we all implore the gods to smile down and gift us a mate? It’s considered a merciful act, but maybe it’s the opposite. Writing about love, let alone heartbreak, is never easy. It’s not usually poetic. It’s always a messy, chaotic web of emotions that cannot be charted. But while you’re quarantined, you are “graciously granted” the chance to mull over every love you’ve ever had and examine each detail on a molecular level. Or, at least I have. When it comes to overthinking, I’m your gal. Which is why my latest blog post is so long overdue. But it’s now on par with my perfectionist tendencies that I decided it’s time to showcase it. Travel has always been a liferaft when it comes to comforting broken heart. When your soul is tapped of all motivation or ambition, if everything around you appears lackluster, travel will save you. Travel isn’t a distraction for your woes. In fact, it’s the magical elixir that’s sought by even the richest kings and queens. Do yourself and favor and never stop courting travel. It’s going to be there even during your darkest hour. Radio silence has been the soundtrack at Quirky Globetrotter for the past week. In hopes to better understand the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19), I’ve been lurking on the sidelines waiting for answers. I wish I had an epiphany to share with you. Instead, I spent the last week trying to find some normalcy in my life. Within that normalcy, I needed to find a balance between my admiration for jetting around the globe and my social responsibility to remain quarantined to help flatten the curve. I’m not sure if I’ve found one, but the same message echoes: nurture your daydreams. The world isn’t all rainbows ending in pots of gold. But even when our reality seems so bleak, daydreams help us scale the ocean floors or the highest summits. I’m ready to feel empowered instead of disappointed by my daydreams. I’m not ready to let go of these life-long plans. It’s more than just countries and landmarks that live on my bucket list, it’s a zeal for life. The question is no longer how; it’s when. Do you care if you come across as a tourist? Today, I’m wearing my favorite wool sweater because it’s friggin cold in Minnesota. 🥶 (So much for spring 😂) and it’s one of those iconic Icelandic sheep, wool sweaters that tourists freak out over. I ironically found mine at a thrift store before my trip, but it got me thinking. Are you nervous to wear I ❤️ NY shirts in NYC? What about the over the top, button-up floral shirts in Hawaii? Are you afraid of defining yourself as a tourist? I used to be really nervous about coming across as a needy tourist. Which is why I never asked for directions or why I never reached out to locals. I wanted to present myself as put together and not as a cliche. I cringe when I reflect back on how I used to travel. I think of all the opportunities I would’ve missed if I decided to stay inside my comfortable, enclosed bubble. In fact, I would’ve never made it here to enjoy this impeccable view if I hadn’t talked to a local. I have since rejected the notion that being a tourist is cliche and frowned upon. Instead, I see it as a state of learning. By owning up to my shortcomings I hope to better understand the world around me instead of letting my ignorance and (sometimes) arrogant behavior guide my adventures. I try my best to not stick out like a sore thumb, but I worry more about my actions than how I’m dressed. I want to indulge in all aspects of travel, and I won’t let my current shortcomings prevent me from doing that. What do you think? Still shy about being considered a tourist or an outsider?
