I’ve corresponded with Newt’s brother who’s a very, very powerful Auror also, at the other side of the Atlantic called Theseus who’s a commander and so, I don’t know Newt but knowing his brother—initially there’s a fondness and then there might be a little bit of tension.

Something inspired by this clip please. Because the idea of Percival Graves hung over and screaming at the top of his lungs because Theseus brings out the worst in him is hilarious to me XD

Grindelwald escapes prisons and sets out to find and kill Newt. Being able to sense imminent danger saved Newt before, so in order to get Grindelwald off his tail, he fakes his own death in a relatively public place but making sure no body could be retrieved. Too bad he didn't have time to warn his brother and new friends in advance, so they actually believe him to be dead. When it's safe for him to return a little worse for wear but alive, Graves and Theseus - after almost having a heart attack - turn into protective motherhens. Bonus: Newt actually sent a coded warning but it didn't reach them in time and they never got around to read it afterwards. In the end it was better because their reactions when facing Grindelwald were genuine. Btw, for the sake of the prompt, Theseus doesn't own a wizarding clock keyed to Newt that could show that he is still alive. Angst is great, hurt/comfort and fluff afterwards is even better.

Theseus and Graves are in a relationship, but this isn't common knowledge (which means Newt and his entire managerie knows). They write regularly when they aren't on the same continent. When Grindelwald takes Graves' place he keeps replying to the letters but - being unaware of the relationship (the letters don't reveal it) - Theseus quickly works out that Something Is Wrong. 

Which is how it came to pass that two Scamander brothers got off that boat to New York. 

Bonus: Newt is quiet and awkward ...except with his big brother because siblings are always siblings and "you stole my toy hippogriff when I was six" "you stole a real one" is a perfectly reasonable conversation to be having while runnign for your life.

After the Grindelwald incident MACUSA and MoM are holding a dueling competition. Originally Newt only came to be support for his older brother and his new american auror friends. He's not comfortable at such events. Some asshole who wants to take revenge on Theseus for humiliating him the year before, thinks ge can get it by challenging Newt to fight in front of everyone. Anything goes. Before Graves can intervene, Theseus smirks and accepts the challenge for Newt.

Newt procceeds to wipe the floor with him by using apparation, martial arts and an impressive list of spells, leaving everyone who was worried gaping. Theseus, proud and protective older brother that he is, admits on being responsible for the latter two.

or: five times Theseus set Newt and Percival up in some strange matchmaking scheme and one time Newt actually appreciated it.

Newt immediately knows the Graves at MACUSA isn't the real one, because Theseus has been setting them up for years.
