2023 JANUARY 12 Thursday
"Don’t lose heart, I beg you, and don’t close your eyes to the hope of good for fear that what happens to people who don’t love God should happen to you. For it is not the great number of one’s sins that leads the soul to despair but disdain for God."
~ Rabanus Maurus, Three books dedicated to Bonosus, Bk 3, 4 ; PL 112, 1306

Build a (Magical) Lesbian (Poll 9)
Between working on the design and being sick, sorry this took so long! As you can see, she's a higher-middle class medieval girl. Her clothes come from an illustration of Rabanus Maurus' De Universo and her pipe thing is based on actual Ancient Egyptian incense holders.
While I finish up the color version, choose her profession.

Hl. Rabanus Maurus
gefeiert am 4. Februar
Hl.

8 November
The Octave Day of All Saints
<Salutis Aeternae Dator>
Giver of Life, Eternal Lord
By St Rabanus Maurus (776-856)
Lauds Hymn for All Saints
Giver of life, eternal Lord,
Thy own redeemed defend.
Mother of grace, thy children save
And help them to the end.
Ye thousand, thousand Angel hosts,
Assist us in our need.
Ye Patriarchs, with the Prophet choir,
For our forgiveness plead.
Forerunner blest and thou who still
Dost Heaven’s dread keys retain.
Ye glorious Apostles all,
Unloose our guilty chain.
Army of Martyrs,
holy Priests,
In beautiful array;
Ye happy troops of Virgins chaste,
Wash all our stains away.
All ye who high above the stars
In Heavenly glory reign,
May we through your prevailing prayers
Unto your joys attain.
Praise, honour,
to the Father be,
Praise to His only Son;
Praise, Holy Paraclete,
to Thee,
While endless ages run.
Amen.
St Rabanus Maurus (776-856)
Benedictine Abbot and Bishop, Theologian, Poet, Writer

Early Christian Hymns
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Early Christian Hymns were published in 1908 after many years of research and translation by Danial Joseph Donahoe. The book contains translations of the most notable and best religious songs of the Latin Church from the early and middle ages. Some of these poems and hymns are more than a thousand years old. The book has texts by philosophers and monks such as St. Hilary, St. Damasus, St. Ambrose, Prudentius, Sedelius, Elpis, Fortunatus, St. Gregory the Great, Eugenius, Paul the Deacon, St. Paulinus of Aquileia, Theodulphus, Rabanus Maurus, Pierre Abelard and others including a large collection of hymns by unknown Christian writers.
Latin poems shaped themselves into an English form
The hymns can be enjoyed for their beauty, both in poetry and religious feeling, no matter what religious branch the reader belongs to. From the introduction: The attempt to turn these glorious songs of the Church into something fairly representative of the thought and feeling of the original has been a labor of love during the past four years. The translator has always been an ardent lover of the Latin hymns, but the idea of making English versions of them came about as if by accident. While reading the Veni Sancte Spiritus, the "golden sequence," as it has been called, one Sun day afternoon in April, 1904, the words and melody of the hymn shaped themselves, as it were, into an English form, without any apparent effort, a form which seemed to give an adequate representation of the original both in thought and feeling.
