do you have any book recommendations that go with the aesthetics of the toothsome tv universe?
hmm this is a great question! honestly i don’t read as much fiction as i used to so i don’t have a ton of recs.
i think house of leaves by mark z. danielewski is a no-brainer.
there are books associated with the the shows in the toothsome tv universe as well, chief among them being the secret diary of laura palmer and my life my tapes (dale cooper’s autobiography).
the king in yellow by robert w. chambers is somewhat inspirational of true detective (carcosa), but that’s more high cosmic horror.
i haven’t yet read the books the terror and sharp objects are based on (by dan simmons and gillian flynn respectively) but i’d bet they’d bear fruit!
i don’t know if i can recommend the thomas harris novels that hannibal is based on, but that is the source material (i’ve only read red dragon and it was alright)
but! i think grotesque stories are always worth it so:
perfume: story of a murderer by patrick süskind
rabbits by kanai mieko
anything by southern gothic queen flannery o'connor
i will have to think about your question more tho!
Edit: i should have added jorge luis borges’s works to this. his collection of short stories, particularly The Aleph and Other Stories is very much in this vein!

so about that comic i was talking about a while ago if ur interested im kinda done
not mcyt related! just my own project, an adaptation of a japanese short story that i really like
tw blood, other tw will be on the second page (i’d say rated mature)
comic
the plot is not the priority im more focusing on a kind of vibe but if ur interested its basically how a girl’s family (with the exception of her dad) disappeared one day and this father daughter combo was a weird one because they’d butcher rabbits and have feasts that get weirder and weirder without going to work or school they’d just stay home eat sleep eat sleep then the father got a heart attack the girl became the butcher and the cook and she started to descent into madness: she started to kill rabbits in a very sensual way and get sexual pleasure? she starts to bathe in blood and wear their fur and skin before finally became a... rabbit furry, i guess
anyway uhhh its a weird story called Usagi by Kanai Mieko, shes super wacky, writes in like a kind of reverse magical realism?? super raw stuffs she produces... but again im into very weird stuff so ehehe
i’d love to hear your thoughts but its fine if u just dont have any. the short story is not in english so uh yea this is a passion project so i didnt really have any thoughts besides having fun with it
thats it, i probably will delete this later :D

Kanai’s story “Rabbits” exfoliates the surface of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, not gently but with a piece of glass. It scrapes up the meat of the tale: the young girl’s rage, her isolation, her savage artistry ... “Rabbits” is about becoming a writer. I love the first sentence, especially in the amateur translation I found online, made by a student of Japanese named Olivia. She read the story for a class and decided to translate it, trying it on like skin. “If you’re planning on taking credit for my work,” warns Olivia on her blog, “it could all be completely wrong.” The sentence: “So long as writing, including the act of not writing, is writing, then perhaps inevitably, writing is my fate.”

Rabbits by Kanai Mieko
We read this in my favorite college course: on the grotesque
it’s a sensual short story about a girl who kills and cooks rabbits for her father and herself. she does it for the sheer gluttonous pleasure of it
tw for graphic depictions of eating, killing rabbits, gore, and incestuous subtext

Alice is immortal. The wife of Hargreaves in the photos will age, as that brief passing moment of the transient form only, but now more than ever she continues to live and play a hundred years later as the bright shining eternal shojo, ignoring all those others in the children's books. Yes, and, as that poet in Looking-Glass Land time and again asks of us, if life is nothing but a dream, is it not also precisely as a dream that the life of this world exists?
Yagawa Sumiko, "Fumetsu no Shojo (The Immortal Shojo)" translated by Mary Knighton in "Down the Rabbit Hole: In Pursuit of Shojo Alices, from Lewis Carroll to Kanai Mieko"
