Not what I was expecting
Tumblr media
My old house still has its original cast iron radiators. Which are wonderfully efficient when it comes to heating the house – when you take care of them.
Last September, I was getting the radiators ready for winter. It’s a once-a-year job that takes less than a minute. But it requires a special tool, called a radiator key. And I couldn’t find mine anywhere.
After a few days of fruitless looking, I gave up, went online, and bought one. Only it was backordered. They said it wouldn’t be available until sometime in late October.
So, I was really surprised when it was delivered 3 days later.
That didn’t match up with what I was expecting. But it was exactly what I needed. And I was happy to have it.
Today’s Gospel is all about expectations. And how easy it is for you and me to become lost in our expectations. To become fixed in our expectations.
This is what Jesus is hearing from his critics. They have become set in their preconceived notions about how things have to work. They know how it has to happen. That’s the only way that it can happen. End of discussion.
And doing that is having the same effect on them that it has on you and me 2,000 years later when we do it.
When you and I become fixed in our expectations, we close ourselves off to other possibilities. Making us miss what God is doing in our lives.
Keeping us from the joy that comes from receiving God’s grace.
Because it doesn’t match up to what we were expecting.
Even though it’s exactly what we need.

Commission for @foxgirlchorix of two of her sonas: Meissa the Mechanecological Angel Robot Doll, and Pulcherrima the icy super-earth with oxygen lakes.
Image ID:
Digital art drawing. An angel-like robotic figure in front of a brown and white icy planet with rings. The figure, Meissa, is a mechanical girl with doll-like joints, four arms, two CANADARM-like grapplers, and large angel-like wings which are glowing red as radiator panels. She is smiling broadly with conical teeth. Her head is styled with a sculpted mohawk and headset with three Radio Plasma Wave Science antenna coming out of the right ear and an Apollo LM communications disk on the left ear. She is wearing a gold and silver foil dress made of the stuff used to insulate the Apollo LM. Her feet-shoes are small ion engines, with blue glow. Her eyes are glowing purple. The planet is off-white with a thin blue atmosphere and dark red-brown landforms, with a few scarce impact craters, most of which are multi-ring basins. There are some gray striations and splotches--oxygen lakes, with thin rivers running into them. The planet has rings and two pluto-like moons.
End ID.

Water Bags for the Radiator
Doubtful young people would know what these are or what they were designed to do.
I do remember crossing the desert between Phoenix-Yuma-San Diego when I was a kid and we would have these bags on the front of the radiator to help keep the engine cool. We always left home at the crack of dawn so we could make it across the deserts before the worst of the afternoon heat. San Diego was always a welcomed sight!
Vehicles have changed a lot, like many things.

magic system where “dark magic” and “light magic” are literal terms - dark magic consumes photons, making an area around the spell visibly darker, sometimes to an Extreme extent, and light magic releases photons.
because of this most dark mages tend to work in very brightly-lit areas (either artificial light or outside in the daytime) to fuel their spells and wear and use lightly coloured clothes and tools so that they’re easier to see in the dimness their spells create, whereas light mages wear heavy, sometimes leaden robes (depending on the work being done) and the magical equivalent of welding masks to protect themselves from what can be an extreme amount of light, and sometimes other kinds of electromagnet radiation!
needless to say this is incredibly confusing for anyone unfamiliar with the culture
