Chapter 5: Heartbreak There are many kinds of love. And love *hurts.*

One of the things that makes me love Late by Kabudragon is the little blurb in the description. 

No I don't want to get up, no, I don't care what time it is, no, I'm not feeling better today. Go away, Dalamar.

90% of the time, Raistlin may be described as sickly and weak, we don’t actually see him be ill very often. His sickness doesn’t really feel real, which is why I think I’ve got so much anger about this. He has to stop and rest frequently, or he faints, or he coughs blood, but we don’t see the days where he’s physically unable to get out of bed.

Could you attribute this to Fistandantilus? Sure. But that’s kinda cheap. I think it would have been a bit more interesting to actually have Raistlin have days where Caramon had to carry him, while the others tried to help juggle the two men’s supplies so Caramon isn’t just a bipedal back horse. 

Raistlin falling into Crystalmir Lake by mistake when Caramon tried to get him in the boat. Raistlin being so ill the next day that they can’t hide from the draconians because his coughing gives them away.

While on watch, the others have to keep half an eye on Raistlin for fear of what would happen to Caramon if Raistlin stopped breathing in the middle of the night. Tanis, despite his unease, feeling a deep sense of dread and worry for Raistlin because Tanis can’t help but remember the skinny, stubborn teen he’d been.

Sturm being the only one at camp for some reason (other than Tas, but Tas sleeps like the dead so he’s essentially useless), and has to stop Raistlin from doing something stupid because of a high fever.

Countless interactions with other people. Raistlin being accused of carrying the plague, old hedge-witches and healing women offering bundles of herbs to a desperate Caramon for a few coppers. Raistin, on good days and bad days alike scouring the sides of the roads, and looking out for places where common herbs can be found. 

Goldmoon actually interacting with Raistlin because even though the staff won’t work (it is a consequence of FIstandantilus for the most part afterall), but because sometimes it’s better to use herbs and other medicines than going to the staff, or to a cleric later.

In Winter Night, Tika realizes the main reason that Caramon ‘has’ to stay for Raistlin, after she’s woken up by a fevered shriek of fear that Caramon can only ease.

Lot’s of little interactions that show these people all know each other, and that they’re not all just a random bunch of people who happen to be travelling in the same general direction. Character development. 

One early morning, later in Autumn Twilight, Tanis is surprised at Raistlin being awake and making breakfast. Raistlin shrugs, “Today is going to be a good day.”

Actual appearances by Lemuel and Meggin! Imagine that.

Dalamar going to the Tower in Wayreth for a semi-regular meeting with Par-Salian, and sheepishly tell him that no. Raistlin hasn’t done anything remarkable in weeks because he caught pneumonia and has been fighting it off ever since. The other mages were dubious at first, before Par-Salian reminding them of the days immediately following Raistlin’s Test. Antimodes (if still alive at this point), regaling those present about the case of pneumonia he’d been privy years ago. 

I just have lots of feels about representation of chronic illnesses, and character interaction, and stuff okay sue me.
