While this intimacy between the diaspora and the mainland is alien to the displaced Indentured Tamils, the narrative presented in the mockumentary form a parallel with the descendants of wealthy Tamil Hindus and Christians who may still bear strong connections to the Tamil lands.

This contrast is also important to note between Tamil Muslims and the Indentured Tamils because it reveals the plurality of both the Malaysian Tamil community, and the contradictory contexts of migration, which have never been linear. While this comparison is between these two distinct but related communities, the narrative however, introspects upon other Tamil Muslims who do not have a transnational link to their ancestral village in Tamil Nadu. The narrative ruptures this hegemonic view of the connections between the Tamil Muslim diaspora and Tamil Nadu, by expressing that to bear no link doesn’t completely uproot one’s identity, consciousness, and culture.

Shafie notes that the insistence within the community to inquire and investigate the roots of another Malaysian Tamil Muslim does not come merely from an innocent sense of curiosity but arises through the need to access how they would need to treat the other person and how they should relate to the other person. In the micro-series, we witness how a character simply stating that his native is Ampang causes dissatisfaction within others, who continue pestering him about his roots. To this annoyance, the simple yet piercing line of “oorachum mayirachum” is delivered; it interprets not just a retort against annoyance but also an affliction against the idea that a person can be reduced to land he bears severed connections with. It iterates that the connection to land alone cannot encapsulate both the dialectical consciousness of man and his ancestral soil.

Born of an immense degree of both soul-searching and woodshedding, Shakti emerged in the early 1970s – shattering the barriers between Eastern and Western music with an ecstatic, soulful hybrid that knowingly embodied both traditions while setting out for uncharted musical terrain. Shakti’s catalyst was the meeting of guitarist and composer John McLaughlin and tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain. Both had already achieved a certain degree of notoriety in their musical domains. John, through his association with Miles Davis and his immensely successful group The Mahavishnu Orchestra: Zakir through his amazing classical work and his collaborations with the California music scene. Hussain and McLaughlin had become friends in 1969 and met musically one evening at the house of the late great Ali Akbar Khan. To quote McLaughlin, “It was a revelation playing with Zakir”. McLaughlin subsequently began studying the Vina with Dr. S. Ramanathan and through him met with Dr. L. Shankar himself a head at the South Indian Music department at Wesleyan University and by 1973 had brought Zakir, violinist L. Shankar and the head of the percussion department Ramnad Raghavan playing the mridangamfor the very first time. It was at once, a marriage of the tonal and rhythmic intricacies of classical Indian music with the immediacy and soul of Jazz. This first formation of Shakti recorded its first live recording in 1975 and released in 1976. Their unprecedented music awakened subsequent generations to the rich, untapped potential of such pan-cultural fusions and helped to create what is now known as “World Music.” While the initial lineup of Shakti disbanded in 1978, Hussain and McLaughlin have periodically resurrected the Shakti group for live performances and concert recordings – but have not released a new studio album since 1977’s Natural Elements…until now. “Mohanam” – available for streaming/download – is the first new studio music from Shakti in more than 45 years. Drawn from the upcoming album This Moment (to be released on CD and vinyl in the summer of 2023 by Abstract Logix), the track glimmers with optimism and wonder as it moves with unhurried grace through a series of instrumental movements that acknowledge Shakti’s formidable legacy while proposing new routes. “‘Mohanam’ is a joyful piece,” explains McLaughlin, “and joy is the inherent nature of the Shakti group.” The lineup featured on “Mohanam” – McLaughlin (guitar) and Hussain (tabla) are featured alongside vocalist Shankar Mahadevan, violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan, and percussionist Selvaganesh Vinayakram (son of original Shakti ghatam player T.H. “Vikku” Vinayakram). On “Mohanam,” Hussain and Vinayakram are also featured on konokol – a traditional and demanding form of Indian vocal percussion.

India’s political controversy! Congress ‘gave away’ an island to Sri Lanka!!? Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently disclosed that, as per documents acquired by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) through a Right to Information (RTI) request, the Congress party allegedly, in a manner deemed 'callous' and unlawful, relinquished control of the island of Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka back in 1974!

For those who may not be familiar, Katchatheevu island, situated amidst the waters separating India and Sri Lanka, holds significant value among the local populace due to its abundant fishing resources. Historically, the island was encompassed within the Ramnad zamindari and was officially annexed into Tamil Nadu in 1947, further underlining its regional significance.

Nevertheless, Sri Lanka, known as Ceylon at the time, disputed this claim, leading to conflicts and violent confrontations among inhabitants from both regions. This dispute persisted for several decades before a resolution was reached, resulting in the eventual transfer of control to Sri Lanka as part of a negotiated agreement.

Here’s where the issue soured. As per the documents, both lawmakers and residents vehemently opposed the transfer, labeling it as illegitimate due to the absence of parliamentary approval. Additionally, the Opposition criticized Indira Gandhi's administration for failing to counter Sri Lanka's persistent and provocative assertions regarding India's sovereignty over the island. There was also news of a hidden deal between Indira Gandhi and her Ceylonese counterpart which could be why neither side did anything despite the protests! Today, the BJP has slammed both the Congress and DMK for being untrustworthy, caring only for their families, and betraying the people of India! Congress has hit out claiming that it was to ‘build friendly relations’ while claiming this was BJP’s latest attempt to weaken the Opposition!! What do you think?
