the sea was quiet that morning as the sun peaked through the windows of the little attic in france, illuminating the pages of christine’s newest storybook.

father had picked it up in town a few days ago and presented it to her yesterday after supper, and she had spent all of last night restless with excitement, eager for raoul to come over so that they could read it together.

there were pirates in this one, and they both enchanted and frightened her with their villainous deeds.

when she confided as much to raoul, he jumped to his feet and swore that he would take up a sword of his own to fight with if a pirate ever tried to come for her. christine thought that he was an awfully silly boy, for there were no pirates in perros-guirec, but he told her that his brother philippe always said it was important for a young man to be prepared for anything.

christine had met philippe before, and he was quite grown up, so it made sense that he must be right, for grown ups always knew so much more than children.

she wondered if she might learn to fight with a sword as well, as it seemed a rather exciting thing and she should quite like to be able to fight pirates for herself, and raoul promised her that when he started taking lessons he would share with her everything he knew.

from the room below them rose up the lovely notes of father’s violin, and as raoul picked up reading from where christine had left off, she thought that life could never be more perfect than it was right now.
