speaking of secret alternate options, with thanks to @ratcreature and @blue--dreaming :

if retying your shoelaces is something you double knot them in order to avoid? wrap the lace twice, not once, between making the loop and pulling through to make the second loop. it's only a little harder to tie than the ordinary shoelace knot, it stays tied much better than the ordinary shoelace knot and only a little worse than tying the loops of an ordinary shoelace knot in a second knot, and it's vastly less annoying to untie than that double knot.

Nearly a week since we were lucky enough to be screened at the oh-so-delightful Jane Austen International Film Festival, and take hoem the award for best lgtbq+ drama! Thanks to the organisers for the great photos!

I was talking about this on a discord and @ratcreature said "suspension of disbelief doesn't cover nonsense" which is a genius summary of the issue. and that's it exactly. I've agreed with the author that in this story, there are wizards with laser swords or people with a fuck-or-die switch built into their biology or whatever, but I did not agree to complete nonsense that fails to proceed from the premise!

Genuinely don't know what it's called but there's a particular way of violating reality that doesn't work. For example, I am willing to accept an omegaverse university AU of nearly any fandom you care to name (except, for some reason, Sherlock, because I have an inexplicable hatred for unilock). However, a lot of Star Wars university AUs specifically fail on this aspect: they make Anakin an engineering PhD student and Obi-Wan something like literature or classics, and then they make Anakin his TA or GA.

You can't do that. Absolutely not. Anakin is unqualified for that and a university would not do it in any case. A university would literally hire a junior or senior undergraduate workstudy student to do as much of that work as possible first. They would do NOTHING other than do that and make the prof do all his own grading.

Is there a name for "I will accept [wild fantasy premise] but not [ordinary wrong thing]?" Please tell me there's a name for this. Probably someone who studies lit will know? I'm a systems person I don't know from lit theory just like Anakin

Hey! I just found your blog when surfing the LIW tag and I had a question for you! I missed the boat on a lot of the Iconic LIWs (with the exception of Green Gable Fables) and I was wondering if you knew of any that are currently airing or are about to begin? Or am I completely too late and doomed to rewatch my old faves and be sad that I wasn't able to live through them when they started forever?

Hi! Always glad to welcome new people!

Well, the last episode of Public History is about to air, and I highly recommend watching the whole show. It’s an adaptation of David Copperfield, and there are two seasons. Other than that, I don’t think anything else has been airing for a while and probably won’t anytime soon due to the pandemic and all. HOWEVER, if you haven’t already, you should definitely go watch season one of Rational Creatures cause we’re going to get the rest of the story as soon as the creators can make it happen.

Maybe if we ever get a post-pandemic world (sorry for the pessimism), we’ll get some more LIWs. I have and Iliad adaptation I’ve been trying to make for... two years now? So if it ever actually happens I will talk about it here. Generally, though, I feel like this community needs new people and new ideas or it’s just going to die.

If you want to get involved in a new LIW thing, I’m gonna plug the podcast Jules of @quipmodestproductions and I recently started called It’s Super Important where we’re watching or rewatching LIWs and discussing them. We just finished Elinor and Marianne Take Barton and now we’re watching Jules and Monty, and after that we’re planning to dive into some of the more popular/iconic shows, so at least we’ll be rewatching them together and not alone! You can listen to that on Spotify or wherever else you get your podcasts.
