BOOKS I READ IN 2019 → Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo
“That was what magic did. It revealed the heart of who you'd been before life took away your belief in the possible. It gave back the world all lonely children longed for.”

I received an advanced reader copy of The Lovely and the Lost from Disney Book Group via NetGalley, in return for my honest opinion. The Lovely and the Lost by Jennifer Lynn Barnes is a story about survival and coming to terms with our past. Cady and her kids, Jude and Kira, train dogs for search-and-rescue missions. Cady no longer actively participates in search-and-rescue missions. Not since she rescued Kira- a small, orphaned child lost in the forest. When someone from Cady’s past comes to her for help looking for a missing four year old in the Sierra Glade National Park, she can’t say no. Kira is sure if she can find the missing child, she’ll no longer be broken and her past will no longer haunt her. Kira’s dog, Saskia, can be a bit unpredictable, but Kira is sure that she’s up for the task. Now that Cady has returned to the place she once ran from, will the secrets from her past be exposed? Will Kira’s past help or hinder the search-and-rescue mission? I devoured this book, it was a fast enthralling read. I loved the unique story line. The Lovely and the Lost, will be available tomorrow, Tuesday, May 7, 2019. BOOKS I READ IN 2019 → Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin
“I loved her. Despite everything. Despite the lies, the betrayal, the hurt. Despite the Archbishop and Morgane le Blanc. Despite my own brothers. I don't know if she returned that love, and I didn't care. If she was destined to burn in Hell, I would burn with her.”

BOOKS I READ IN 2019 → Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim
“Above, the stars faded behind the misty sky, and the sun fanned its light upon us. We melted into each other until the dawn slid into dusk, and the sun paled into the moon, and the stars, once lost, became found again.”

BOOKS I READ IN 2019 → The Raging Ones by Krista & Becca Ritchie
“People are satisfied with their deathday because they’ve accepted the fact that it can’t be altered. They’ve never seen hope or been given any. The minute you tell a person there is a way to live longer, their outlook will change. They will fight for a chance to see tomorrow when they thought they had none. No matter the consequences.”

I received an advanced reader copy of The Girls with No Names from Harlequin/Park Row via NetGalley, in return for my honest opinion. The Girls with No Names by Serena Burdick is a story about resilience and self discovery. Luella and Effie Tildon are sisters living in New York, in the 1910s. Luella is the outgoing one, their parents have high hopes for; while Effie is the one they’re always worrying about. After discovering a family secret, Luella becomes outspoken and starts pushing the limits with her parents- until one day, when she’s gone. Effie is sure that their parents sent Luella to the House of Mercy – a local home for immoral girls that promises rehabilitation. Effie hatches a plan to get herself into the House of Mercy to rescue Luella. But Luella’s not there, and now Effie doesn’t know how she’ll ever get home. Mable is one of the girls at the House of Mercy when Effie arrives. Mable’s upbringing was much more difficult than Effie’s privileged childhood. Mable also knows the harsh reality of being a young woman during this time. Both girls long to escape, can they learn to trust each other to save themselves? This was an excellent story filled with many characters to cheer for. Like Before We Were Yours the afterword sheds insight on actual events that brought this book to life. This was a charming story filled with fun, quirky characters. The Girls with No Names is available today, Tuesday, January 7, 2020. I received an advanced reader copy of Don’t Forget Me from Amazon Publishing UK via NetGalley, in return for my honest opinion. Don’t Forget Me by B. C. Schiller is a story about overcoming your past. Five years ago, Olivia Hoffman’s husband and daughter disappeared. Olivia has never stopped looking for them, due to work and taking care of her dad, she’s not making any progress. Now a patient of hers had died and the police say he murdered a girl, Lisa Manz, five years ago. Olivia doesn’t believe this and sets off to clear his name. Levi Kant was the lead investigator, five years ago, on the Lisa Manz case. Due to a horrific injury, Levi was sidelined and unable to solve the case. Levi is no longer an investigator, but finds himself pulled back to the Lisa Manz murder now that her killer has been found. Levi and Olivia have teamed up to discover if Olivia’s patient is Lisa Manz’s killer. This was a short, quick read that leaves you wanting more. This book was recently translated so parts are a bit choppy but overall an interesting plot that keeps you intrested. Don’t Forget Me was released December 12, 2019. I received an advanced reader copy of Her Dark Heart from Bookouture via NetGalley, in return for my honest opinion. Her Dark Heart by Carla Kovach is a story about running from long buried secrets. Susan Wheeler and her husband, Ryan, have recently separated, yet he’s still surprised when Susan doesn’t pick their daughters up. Susan’s mom, Mary, is certain that Susan wouldn’t willingly leave her kids, but Mary has been too preoccupied with Susan’s sister, Clare, to notice if anything was amiss with Susan. DI Gina Harte is grappling with her past, when she’s called in to investigate Susan’s disappearance. Harte is pretty sure both Mary and Ryan are hiding something, then a body is found. How is this body related to Susan’s disappearance? Will DI Harte find Susan before it’s too late? Will DI Harte be able to uncover Mary and Ryan’s secrets? Her Dark Heart is the fifth installment in the Detective Gina Harte series- though this book reads well as a standalone. This was a great, fast read that pulls you in right away.
