When I woke my youngest son this morning he grabbed my hand and said, "Mom, sit down and let’s pray for our country.” My heart melted and I sat beside him, his red hair mussed from the pillows, his eyes looking earnest. We held hands and took a precious moment for America. We live in a very politically-charged region, where facts can sometimes be pushed aside for causes and opinion can rule. At heart, I am a peace-maker, one who’s always looking for what we have in common rather than what divides. This photo from our visit to the #reaganlibrary with the gentle peach hues of the sunset behind such an emblematic part of the #berlinwall pictures my hopes for this week. Yes, current events are very important. Yes, I so long for truth and righteousness to come forward, not just an agenda. But most of all, let’s remember what we have in common. What’s really worth fighting for - freedom and against human injustice. For beauty and the ability to appreciate it. For an end to slavery of minds and hearts and new beginnings rimmed with hope. For those who chose to paint a butterfly on the worst Soviet Communist symbol of separation and pain and control, who visualized hope and joy in the darkness. I don’t really want to see your politics, I want to see your heart. Your struggles and victories. How our friendship can build bridges over what may separate us. How you are unique and special and have a divine purpose in life. Facing death radically and permanently changed my priorities. When we lost everything we owned years ago in a wildfire, I chose the butterfly on our dishes and our artwork and in little places as we slowly bought mugs and everyday-objects. I wanted to be intentional about not focusing on what was lost but on the possibilities, the hope, the day we’d spread our wings again. I don’t like to see divisiveness rule the media and the agendas. I want hope to prevail. Will you join me in praying as my son did when he awoke for truth and unity to rise anew?
