Despite the many new resorts and attractions located all around the country, Tagaytay has always been a short and easy drive for Metro Manila residents who long for a relaxing change of pace. It had been a very eventful 2018 for me, especially with my recent Hip Replacement Surgery and all the exciting activities I was still able to do, so I decided to start the new year right with an invigorating three-day vacation at Tagaytay’s most popular hotel.

Taal Vista Hotel has been the desired home of many Filipino families and vacationers ever since it opened all the way back in 1939. I enjoy going to Tagaytay because it is just a short one hour drive from Metro Manila (two if you are from Quezon City), so I don’t get too tired from the ride itself. Taal Vista Hotel is located right along the main Aguinaldo Highway, just beside the Sky Ranch theme park which you surely won’t miss. The parking area is quite spacious so we just parked the car right in front of the main entrance and got ready for another rejuvenating stay.

We arrived early on a Sunday, which is the busiest day of the week in Tagaytay, so we could escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Checking in was a breeze at the front desk in the main lobby so we had lots of time to explore and roam around the hotel grounds. This is my third time to stay at Taal Vista Hotel but I still feel excited each time I visit.

Taal Vista Hotel is part of the history of Tagaytay City itself. It was constructed during the Commonwealth Era when President Manuel L. Quezon decided in 1935 to develop Tagaytay into a tourist destination. He even held cabinet meetings at Taal Vista Lodge, as it was called back then, after it was built along the Tagaytay Ridge which holds a stunning view of the famous Taal Lake and Volcano. After surviving the Japanese occupation in the second World War and going through several other Philippine presidents, it was bought in 2002 by SM Investments Corporation of Henry Sy, who as a young man used to sit by the Taal Vista gardens to gaze out and dream. 2019 is a special year for the hotel as it is celebrating its 80th anniversary.

The sprawling hotel has a total of 261 rooms spread out on two separate wings. The Mountain Wing was the first section constructed and has a more serene and private surrounding. This area is a bit farther from the hotel’s public areas so you can experience a more peaceful and quiet stay. The Mountain Wing has undergone a major renovation in the past years, including most of its rooms which now come with more modern designs.

We checked in at their newly renovated Mountain View Deluxe King which comes with a magnificent view of the ridge and a partial view of the famous Taal Lake and Volcano. This is my first time to stay at the Mountain Wing since I usually book my rooms at the newer Lake Wing, but since these rooms have just been renovated, it comes with that vibrant and refreshing feel to it.

The Deluxe King room comes with a comfortable king-sized bed and includes all the necessary amenities to complete your vacation such as a flat screen TV, workdesk, refrigerator, coffee and tea making facility, and complimentary wifi all throughout the hotel.

I love the light blue and green pastel colors inside the room which perfectly blends with the amazing view outside the window. This view is what I woke up to each morning and it is really a great change of scenery from the usual buildings and traffic that I see outside my house.

The bathroom also comes with modern facilities including a heated rainshower complete with toiletries.

Taal Vista Hotel is a huge property and it is nice to just walk around the tranquil gardens and explore its many amenities. The Swimming Pool is located just below the rooms at the Mountain Wing and this is a great spot for kids and families to get together.

The Fitness Center can also be found in the Mountain Wing for those who prefer to get a little workout even while on vacation. They also have the Asmara Spa which provides relaxing massages and treatments to soothe your aching muscles.

Children will be happy to stay inside the Kids’ Corner and Game Room with its colorful toys, mini ball pit and slide plus kiddie art activities. There is also a billiards room just beside it where the adults can hang out.

The most popular area at Taal Vista Hotel is definitely the Viewing Deck with its amazing and unobstructed view of Taal Lake. This is just in front of the Lake Wing which features more modern designs and amenities, although there are usually more guests staying and roaming around these areas. The Premier Rooms at the Lake Wing come with a balcony that gives an extravagant view of Taal Lake, and this is what I booked before during my previous visits to Taal Vista. The Sky Ranch Tagaytay is just beside this area and hotel guests get an exclusive express entrance to the theme park.

You can get a closer view of Taal Volcano itself by using any of the telescopes at the Viewing Deck. Here’s a quick trivia. Do you know that the Taal Volcano is actually not that small volcano we usually spot in front? That’s actually a different hill called Binintiang Malaki and the real Taal Volcano is located behind it in that middle island. I only found out about this a few years ago after several trips to Tagaytay.

There are so many Instagram-worthy spots around the hotel where you can get a great souvenir photo with Taal Volcano as a photobombing backdrop. I really liked how the Taal Vista placed all these nice and subtle objects around the viewing deck without compromising its serene and majestic surroundings.

I was happy to find out that it was still Christmas in Tagaytay! It really felt like an extended Christmas vacation with all the Filipino families and balikbayan guests at the hotel. I also saw several foreign guests checked in so it’s good that they have also discovered the beauty of Taal Vista Hotel.

I can’t believe that this garden is the same area where Henry Sy used to daydream while looking at the Taal Volcano. Now he owns the hotel itself and is the richest man in the Philippines. It’s such a romantic location so I think I’ll stay here a little bit longer while I contemplate on my own daydreams.

After walking around the hotel’s scenic spots, it’s time to have lunch! The Veranda is Taal Vista Hotel’s all-day dining restaurant which offers a wide selection of local and international cuisine. The bright and spacious restaurant has a cheerful ambiance to go along with the lovely setting. They offer weekday lunch buffets (P1100 per person) plus weekend lunch and dinner buffets (P1350 per person), as well as an à la carte menu.

We availed of their Sunday lunch buffet and started with some rolls and maki from the Japanese Station. Salads, breads, and various appetizers were also available.

Daily breakfast buffet is also served at Veranda for checked-in guests as well as walk-in customers. My breakfast routine consists of hot garlic rice topped with sardines, corned beef, longganisa, dried fish, and other Filipino breakfast favorites.

For those lazy days and nights where you don’t really want to get out of bed, there is also an option to just order Room Service! My bed was really so comfortable so on our first night, I just decided to call for room service and ordered their Bulalo, Nasi Goreng and Chicken Nuggets plus the Leche Flan with Macapuno as a dessert. This is available 24 hours a day so you can even call for a midnight snack if you wish.

For a more private and romantic dining experience, Tāza Fresh Table is the newest dining outlet at Taal Vista Hotel which offers a more secluded setting. Taken from the Arabic word Tāza which means fresh, the restaurant offers laid-back dining featuring garden-to-table vegetables and dishes.

Chef Jayme Natividad brings out Mediterranean-inspired cuisine highlighted by sustainable, natural and organic ingredients. They use vegetables from their own garden for their dishes, while getting other ingredients from nearby local farms to support local farmers. DAY 18…..Greece the First Time

Mykonos. Nothing to compare it to. Perhaps a bit like the Jersey Shore, Coney Island or Jones Beach of old. Trying to be the Hamptons, but not quite making it.

Hordes of people! More than I can describe. All on holiday. Tourism is the major industry. The only industry.

Besides the original natives, way back in history there was an influx of Egyptians and Phoenicians. There are many wind mills. Known world wide as Mykonos’ landmark.

The name of the island is Mykonos. The name of the principal town is named Mykonos, also. Unusual.

Chora is the place to be in Mykonos. It is a special area of the town. A neighborhood unto itself. Stone buildings built close together. Narrow streets between them. Very narrow. Like 3-5 feet. The buildings were built close together many years ago to protect them from the sea and its storms. Today those alleys/walkways are the playground of Mykonos. Stores, bars, restaurants and I do not know what permeate the area.

These alleys of Chora go every which way. Like a maze. Easy to get lost.

Little Venice hangs on the ocean side of the Chora. It is called such because its houses literally hang over the sea. At least the balconies do.

I find three differences between Mykonos and Santorini.

One unquestionably is the weather. The humidity on Mykonos is a killer. The evening brings no relief. Breeze. What breeze? There is little, if any. Whereas Santorini had no humidity, was hot by day and cool by night. A sweater or jacket was required in the evening. Air conditioning not used. Open a window or door and sleep comfortably under a blanket.

It is said the difference in humidity, etc. between the two islands is the height of each. Santorini is high and buildings are on top of the cliffs. Mykonos is relatively low. Hills. Gradual, however.

Only about 100 miles separates Mykonos and Santorini. Mykonos is to the north of Santorini and normally would be cooler. Though it is not.

A second difference is the number of people visiting each island. Mykonos is jam packed. An avalange of people arrive daily. Every nationality visits and works on Mykonos. I would describe the crowd last night in the Chora area as being just slightly less appearance wise as Times Square on New Year’s Eve.

Santorini has significantly fewer visitors. Comparatively speaking, I would estimate Mykonos has more visitors than Santorini by 30-1.

The final difference is in the atmosphere. It is in the air. Everyone whoops it up on Mykonos. Party time till the wee hours of the morning. Santorini is in bed by 10. The streets are totally empty by 11.

Life begins between 10 and 11 in Mykonos. Last night as I was walking to my hotel away from the Chora, tons of younger people were walking in the opposite direction. Towards the Chora. The ladies dressed. Dressed! Like in minis, knee length and other size dresses. Heels. Tall. Made up for a night on the town.

I felt sorry for the ladies. The humidity was so heavy I could see their make up starting to run.

By the way, I was walking up to my hotel at 10 while the younger ones were going downhill into the Chora to begin their evening. A difference between the generations.

I had dinner last night in the Chora. Overlooking the sea. The restaurant was Antonia’s. Just like in Key West. Key West’s Antonia’s puts out a better product, though I did enjoy my meal. A lamb casserole.

After dinner, I was off to find the Montparnasse. It is a piano bar. The only piano bar in Mykonos.

Donna and Terri suggested I stop there. Terri sang there at one time. They told me the owners were a Judy and Nikko. Terri said tell them of our relationship and be prepared to be treated royally.

I never did. I could not find the place. It is in one of those alleys I described earlier. I asked three knowledgeable Mykonos citizens where it was. Each knew. Each sent me to a different place. Each was wrong. By this time, the humidity had gotten to me and I said screw it.

Bobby Peaco, who played and sang at the Keys Piano Bar, is playing at Montparnasse now. I was looking forward to seeing him again. I was also looking forward to boozing it up a bit. Did not occur because this man could take the heat no more.

Perhaps tonight.

The stones constituting the walkway in the Chora alleys interested me. I was told they have been there forever. They reminded me of the stones making up the Apian Way. Thirty years ago when in Rome, I visited the Apian Way. The roads were constructed of larger stones than in Mykonos. The same stones which the Roman chariots traveled over. Back before the birth of Christ. The Mykonos and Appian Way stones were similar, except in size.

Mykonos is definitely a tourist town. The prices 25-50 per cent higher than Santinori. Gin on the rocks was 50 per cent higher. For Gordon’s! I did not find this gouging on Santorini.

Today the Super Paradise Beach. I have been assured by many it is one of the world’s finest beaches. I am looking for to experiencing it.

The bottom line is Mykonos is a terrific vacation place. For many from all over the world. It is not my cup of tea, however.

The Greek election is Sunday. Very significant! The result will have world wide impact.

I compare this election to Governor Walker’s recent recall election in Wisconsin. I thought surely he would have been beaten. He was not. Walker has now set the trend to be followed for the next ten years at least in the United States.

In Greece, the issue is the euro or back to the drachma. From what I have experienced in Athens and Santorini, the populace wants back to the drachma. Except for my friend and recent landlord Nikos. He wants to stay with the euro. Nikos represents the affluent. The others I spoke with the more common people. A Wall Street / Main Street battle all over again.

No one is talking politics on Mykonos. The locals are too busy making money. The tourists too busy having a good time.

Sunday will tell the story.

Joanna is my savior! Her grandfather built the hotel I am staying in some fifty years ago. Her uncle now owns it. She manages the place.

Joanna is some place in her twenties. Industrious. Charming. Ever so helpful. You have to understand my cell phone is down, wi-fi does not work that often here, and Louis needs a computer to do his blog.

I explained my problem to Joanna when I checked in. She said no problem. You will use mine as long as you are here. So here I am, sitting at her desk, punching away.

An international hotel chain should look at Joanna. Her experience is in the blood. She would make a great acquisition.

The impeachment trial is winding down today. The guilty/not guilty vote will be taken.

Trump will be exonerated as in the first impeachment trial. He is teflon. Nothing sticks to him.

I listened to this morning’s closing arguments. One observation. Trump’s lead counsel (whose name I cannot recall at the moment) from Philadelphia is a slime. One lawyer to another.

He was a disaster the first day. Came back yesterday. Disgraced himself today.

The Republican Senators were laughing at times during his delivery. Not because of the quality of his presentation. Rather, because of the manner of his attack on the Democratic Managers.

In a real court room, he would not have gotten away with it. The judge would have cut his testicles off immediately.

Don’t let me hear I am a Democrat and a poor loser. Not the issue. The attorney was an embarrassment to his profession. Garbage is garbage.

The funny thing is the attorney did not have to conduct himself in the fashion he did. It has been obvious from day one that Trump could not be convicted. The votes were not there.

Great golf this weekend. The Pebble Beach Golf Tournament.

Pebble Beach consists of three courses. One is closed down for repairs. The other is Spyglass.

I have played Spyglass, also. A tough round. Not as difficult as Pebble Beach itself. However bad enough.

Spyglass is like playing golf in the woods. Narrow fairways. Woods all around. Tall thin trees with branches almost to the ground. A mishit and a player is in the woods in bad shape.

I am impressed with Jordan Spieth’s play. He did well in last week’s tournament. He was leading a the end of the third round. Didn’t have it on the final 18.

He was leading yesterday at the end of the second round with a -12.

I hope he can continue the excellent play. He has had a couple of bad years.

Islamorada is in the mid keys. A 1 hour 45 minute drive from Key West. Old. Fun places, however.

The motels are generally old. Vintage 1950s. Clean. Located right on the ocean beach.

It is the bars and restaurants that make Islamorada a place I enjoy. For lunch, Loreli. On the gulf side. Great sandwiches and people. Pleasant atmosphere.

Dinner in the evening The Islamorada Fish Company. I sometimes go two evenings in a row. On the gulf side also. Stone crabs the specialty of the house. Enjoyed with a great vista view from a huge round deck sitting out over the gulf.

Islamorada is also known as the Fishing Capital of the World. Real fishermen go there to enjoy the sport.

Islamorada is a typical Key. U.S. 1 running down the middle of the Key.

Traffic over the years has obviously gotten heavy. People seeking many of the keys south of Islamorada. Crossing U.S. 1 from one side to the other can be dangerous. Patience required. If you have any smarts, you wait till crossing is easy. Many deaths and bad injuries the result of those who do not. Accidents are many.

The State decided an overhead bridge was required for pedestrian travel in order to avoid accidents from occurring. The Islamorada Council did not want it. The State announced it was cancelling construction.

Everything will remain as it was.

Baseball great Ted Williams was an avid fishermen. In the early 1960s, he purchased a magnificent home on the ocean side. The fishing boats are on the gulf side. Most everything is on the gulf side.

Williams sold his home in 1988. He said at the time that he decided to sell it when he had to wait to cross U.S. 1.

Traffic has always been problem. Worse today, of course. However with a bit of patience, not a problem.

May Johnson’s diary entry was not in the Citizen this morning. Has final publication arrived? Seems so. Hopefully her further diaries will get “translated” and we all will have the plea sue of following her again.

When better tech means more focus

Excuse for me the love letter to Apple, but I’d kind of missed it these past 18 years.

I used to be a Mac person. Through and through. (Other than that brief affair with a lovely Commodore 64 in the early 1980s, I mean.) Mac was all I would work on. I find the interface easy to navigate, almost instinctive. Yes, I do realize that’s how they’re designed and built, but as you’ll know if you’ve ever tried using the Canada Customs app at Pearson Airport, not everything that’s designed and built to be instinctive and user-friendly actually is, you know, instinctive and user-friendly.

Mais bon, passons.

Mac, then. That was my brand. I would do everything on it, including building websites in the early 1990s. Yes, sir. In old-fashioned HTML that was as clunky as it was inelegant. But we persevered, and - you’re welcome. Progress has been made, and not just a little.

But marriage intervened to ruin my blissful relationship.

The fellow I married was - and still is - a Windows enthusiast. Why, for a while there he even owned a Windows phone. Not for very long, because they didn’t work worth beans, but he gave it as good a try as anyone would. When I moved in with him, in late 2000, I had two Macs. A laptop and a desktop, and I won’t bore you with stories about how long and cumbersome it was to keep my files synced. Because I kept an apartment in Montreal I left the desktop there and brought my laptop to his place in Ottawa. But eventually, because we wanted to be able to share computers and files between same, it became necessary for one of us to switch.

That one of us was me, because he was too invested in Windows. He had more expensive programs that only ran on this platform - at the time, it was the wonderfully quaint Windows 95, which was way better than Windows 2000 and only marginally inferior to Windows XP. We eventually got through Windows 2003 and Vista then Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 and ultimately Windows 10, which works reasonably well to be fair about it.

But. Now that we don’t share computers or files or a life anymore, and especially now that most of my work is in the cloud using apps and programs that aren’t platform-specific and sync files all by themselves… you see where I’m going.

I’ve been working on a Microsoft Surface Pro 3 for the last four years. Again, to be fair, it’s a great little machine. It lets me do all sorts of stuff, including editing heavy video files and what have you. But it’s four years old now, and a few months back I started to think about what I should get as a replacement when the time came. The Surface was still working quite well, but you know how these things go and I didn’t want to get stuck without a working machine and/or having to make a decision super quickly because suddenly I was computer-less only to regret it later.

I thought and researched and looked around at just about all the options. I don’t do a lot of video editing these days, but I wanted a machine that could deal with that, just in case the bug comes back. I do, however, use Lightroom every day to edit my pictures. Photoshop too, sometimes. And I write lots. The rest of my work is web-based and pretty routine.

One of my favourite features about the Surface is that it’s light and eminently portable. I wanted that again because laptops are so 2012. Touchscreens are pretty much mandatory, too. I like to be able to use a pen because I have delusions about one day being good enough a visual artist to justify drawing and sketching on the screen. OK, so the pen is not strictly speaking necessary. But I like it.

There are tons of options out there, as you’ll know if you’ve been outside the house at all this year or browsed Amazon, but nothing seemed worth the effort. Except for getting a newer Surface Pro, I guess. The price is right, and the machine works well.

I was in the process of slouching towards that lukewarm decision when, on a shopping trip with Eldest, we went to the Apple Store for no good reason at all, which is of course always the best reason to go there. I saw the iPad Pro and oh my, love.

I’ve had iPads in my life, starting with an original purchased wayyyy back in 2010, an iPad 2, and an iPad mini. I’ve also had nothing by iPhones for the last dozen years or so. But this Pro machine was different, as it promised to be as powerful as a computer but as light, convenient and portable as a regular iPad. It’s more expensive than a regular iPad, but in the same general price range as the Surface.

Made for me, you could say.

It doesn’t have USB ports (my files are on external drives) or the ability to use a mouse, which almost triggered an anxiety attack, but other than that it’s about all I ever wanted. Could I transfer my files to a different form of storage? No doubt. I’ve got iCloud and it’s working fine. Could I live without a mouse? Maybe…

I played with it a lot in the store, and slowly warmed up to it. What really got my attention was that - as with the phone - you can add a keyboard in French and type in French using a QWERTY keyboard. On Windows if you switch to the AZERTY layout, which is too much for my brain and fingers. I want to write in French without switching back and forth between keyboard configurations. Over the years I’ve had to kludge my way to bilingual sort-of happiness using shortcuts for French accents and ignoring the spellchecker going insane, or sometimes just using my iPhone to write something in French. This iPad Pro would be like my iPhone except much bigger with a real keyboard.

I was sold. But my computer was still working… I waited very patiently until it started misbehaving in weird ways a few weeks ago and I am now convinced its impending doom is not too far away. Time to purchase. I did this week, and it’s a beautiful little tool (NOT a toy) I got myself.

Of course, like a phone or regular iPad, it’s mostly app-based. And multitasking is less convenient than on a computer especially when you’re a wiz at mouse handling like yours truly and take perverse pride in handling 16 open tabs in three different browsers at a time. But you know what? Within hours of using the iPad Pro I noticed something weird. I wasn’t multitasking nearly as much. And I noticed something else, too: That not multitasking nearly as much was a wonderful thing indeed for my concentration and focus. Probably for my productivity as well, but the sample study is too small right now to be sure of that.

So anyway. Not that Apple needed my endorsement to stay in business. But wow am I glad I’ve resumed my love affair with it. So long, Windows.
