It’s not a coincidence that after the AMPTP hired a crisis PR firm that shows from Drew Barrymore to Bill Maher to The Talk to Jennifer Hudson are or are saying they plan to return to air without their writers. Similar language of needing to care for other workers and the WGA not being the only talent that’s important suggest a concerted effort to weaken the WGA stance and depict the writers as selfish and stubborn. And, frankly, the writers dominated the PR side of things for a long time, and losing that dominance as the AMPTP has finally brought on competent help for its own messaging is exceedingly dangerous for the WGA (which is also being positioned as fissuring from within, showrunners versus regular writers). The WGA needs to move, now, even though its negotiating power has already been eroded, before the AMPTP messaging takes hold even more.

Disclaimer: I have no inside information, but the playbook here isn’t new and the WGA needs to win what it can.

I've been a fan of Bill Maher's, and watched Real Time for the better part of 20 years. I know, I know, he's gotten more stuck in his ways and refused to change with the times, but I found him very frequently to still be humorous if not informative. And the roundtable discussions were always good. I liked the mixing of ideas, but with a dash of comedy to make it go down easier.

I've drifted closer and closer to this, but this week's episode was just finally too much for me, and I'm done with the show, and probably going to cancel my HBO subscription.

His final thoughts this week, he threw in behind JK Rowling in a big way, and saying how great she was, how brave, for refusing to bend the knee to transgender people.

He may have said more, but that's when I turned off the tv. I'm just done.

If he's throwing in so whole heartedly with an agenda that wants to see me dead or invisible, he won't have my viewership long, anyways.

Noa Tishby, Israel’s special envoy for combating antisemitism and the delegitimization of Israel, broke down the fundamental differences between antisemitism and being critical of the state of Israel during her appearance on Friday on HBO’s talk series Real Time With Bill Maher.

During the “overtime” segment of the show, Maher asked questions submitted online by fans that were then discussed by his panel of guests, which included Tishby, Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin (D-Michigan) and former presidential candidate Andrew Yang, who is also co-chair of the Forward Party. One such question was directly for Tishby, and the former actress was asked to explain how people can differentiate between “legitimate criticism” of Israel and antisemitism.

Tishby began by explaining that “anti-Zionism is antisemitism,” which garnered loud applause from the studio audience.

“There’s nothing wrong with criticizing the Israeli government, the Israeli government’s policies, politicians,” she continued, “[but] if you’re trying to dismantle the Jewish state; if you’re trying to go against the existence of the state of Israel, that’s where the line is drawn. Sadly, there are a lot of people who are criticizing Israel, and that’s totally fine, but there are a lot of people that are saying Israel is not a legitimate country. And that is unacceptable.”

And finally, New Rule: now that we're all recovered from St Patrick's Day, let's make it the last one. You know, I never understood Irish Pride or any pride in anything other than what you've actually accomplished. And as holidays go, St Pattie's is kind of malarkey. You don't get presents like Christmas or candy like Easter or joyless appointment sex like Valentine's Day. You don't even get a Peanuts special.

There's just a parade. And what rights are we marching for? The right to drink in the day? Do we still need to take to the streets in a public expression of support for Irish migrants?

Here in California, we're now segregating kidnapping. Really. California doesn't just have amber alerts for missing children, we have ebony alerts for black children and feather alerts for Native American Kids. What is that we look for them by listening on the ground?

Look, even if you like identity politics, this kind of thing is antiquated. From 2010 to 2020, the number of people identifying as multi-racial in America went up 276 percent. One in five newlyweds now are in an interracial marriage. And that number goes up to 100% in ads for Subaru.

You couldn't do a remake of "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" today because almost 100% of Americans approve of interracial marriage. Especially with rich in-laws. And 95% of white women would leave their husband to marry Idris Elba. Idris Elba who says, "As humans we are obsessed with race and that obsession can really hinder people's aspirations." Actress Raven-Symone agrees. She told Oprah, "I'm tired of being labeled. I'm not an African-American. I'm an American." She says, "I don't know what country in Africa I'm from. My roots are in Louisiana."

And you don't have to agree with that, but it's a point of view a lot of people have. It should be respected. Morgan Freeman says the way to finish off racism is, "stop talking about it. I'm going to stop calling you a white man and I'm going to ask you to stop calling me a black man."

There's even a movement now to ban racial questions on the census, and many of its leaders are people of color like Professor Sheena Mason who says, "to undo racism we have to undo our belief in race."

The liberal group moveon.org formed in 1998 to urge Republicans to move on from the Clinton impeachment. Today's Democrats should move on from identity politics. It's not working. It's not working for them or for us. Democrats are hemorrhaging the very voters they think they're pandering to.

The Financial Times writes, "Democrats are going backwards faster with voters of color than any other demographic," and suggests the reason is that, "A less racially divided America is an America where people vote more based on their beliefs than their identity." Exactly. Far-left liberals are living in an old paradigm. Americans don't fit into into neat little boxes anymore.

Who has the number one country song right now? Beyonce. Lil Naz X won a country music award, and he's black and gay. And a brand ambassador for the waspiest purse in America, Coach. The biggest new star in country is Jelly Roll who was a drug dealer, then a prisoner, then a rapper and then a face tatted country music star. Not to mention a giant middle finger to the idea of staying in your own lane.

No, in America now, you're allowed to be many things all at once and that's a good thing even when it's really stupid.

Look, we're all Jelly Roll now. We're sloppy, complicated and contradictory. Two-thirds of Republican voters support weed legalization. And 41% of Democrats own or live with someone who owns a gun. Ms Marvel is Pakistani. And the winner of the last two NBA dunk contests is white. The new Captain America is black. And Spider-Man is black and Puerto Rican, just like AI George Washington.

Latinos make up half of the Border Patrol. And the name of the coolest black dude on the planet is Lenny Kravitz. Ru Paul has a ranch in Wyoming that does fracking. Really. And has a fortified compound with a bunker to die for. And somehow the leader of the Village People was straight. Really. Je just went to the YMCA to work out. And the leader of the Proud Boys isn't an old white guy he's Enrique Toreo, an Afro-Cuban. He burns crosses on his own lawn.

Caitlyn Jenner is a pro-Trump transwoman who supports a ban on trans athletes competing in women's sports. And there's even an LGBTQ organization called "Gays for Trump." And why wouldn't there be? Gays love drag queens.

Our black president was half white. And our black vice president is half Asian. And Tiger Woods is, oh we don't even have the time.

My point is, look, you're still building your politics around slicing and dicing people into these fixed categories. Democrats need to get the memo that you can't win elections anymore by automatically assuming you're going to get every voter who's not these guys.

The more you obsess over identity, the more you ignore the bread and butter issues that win and lose elections. The real issue is class, not race, and the real gap is the diploma divide. And the real future of the party and maybe democracy depends on Democrats figuring that out.

Prediction: Trump will win, because even if the Dems wanted to change course on this identity politics bullshit, there are far too many identarians who have been elected into it on that exact basis. Look at The Squad, where every single one of them is a pathological liar who plays only by identity cards.

They can't undo a decade of abandoning their core constituency, the working class, in favor of privileged woke academic elites in the span of only six months. Even if they wanted to. Not with the wingnuts still around, doing what they've been doing for years: sucking up all the oxygen and screaming about their imaginary oppression. And there's no sign they do.

Und da soll sich noch wer auskennen? - Neues von den Streiks (nicht wirklich)

Hollywood streikt immer noch. Doch das Ganze hat jetzt offiziell einen Punkt erreicht, an dem es unmöglich ist, noch durchzublicken wer was darf, wer was will, und ob es jemals aufhört und wieder Normalität einkehrt.

Scabbing-Vorwürfe und gegenseitiger Hass haben den Streik ja praktisch schon von Anfang an begleitet, und man darf nicht vergessen, dass die Drehbuchautoren inzwischen schon seit Anfang Mai läuft und zu diesem Zeitpunkt alle geskripteten Live-Shows aus Solidarität heraus ihre Produktion eingestellt hatten, obwohl das eigentlich nicht notwendig gewesen wäre. Seit dem stehen diverse Leute, die nichts mit dem Streik an sich zu tun haben, von Regisseuren, Kameramänner, Make-Up und Hair-Department-Mitgliedern über Beleuchter und PAs ohne Einkommen da, und das obwohl sie alle nicht mal streiken. Zum damaligen Zeitpunkt habe ich ja schon darauf hingewiesen, dass die Autoren mit ihrer Aktion ihren Kollegen schaden, doch diejenigen, die am lautstarksten online vertreten sind - nämlich die Schauspieler - haben alle auf Liebkind mit den Autoren gemacht, vor allem deswegen weil ihre eigenen Verhandlungen bevor standen und man ähnliche Anliegen wie die Autoren hatte, und wir wissen ja, was daraus wurde - drei Monate später fingen auf die Darsteller an zu streiken, und seit dem kennt sich eigentlich niemand mehr aus, was erlaubt ist und was nicht, weil der einfache Gedanke "Schauspieler tun halt nicht schauspielern" nicht zutrifft.

Da ist ja etwa die saumdämliche Klausel, dass sie weder vergangene noch gegenwärtige Produkte der bestreikten Firmen bewerben dürfen, aber zugleich reden immer alle über zukünftige Projekte, für die sie unterschrieben haben, denn offenbar dürfen sie zugleich streiken und neue Verträge für zukünftige Arbeit für die Firmen, die sie gerade bestreiken, unterschreiben. Auf Cons dürfen sie zwar gehen, aber dort dürfen sie nur über gewisse Themen sprechen und eben nicht über die, wegen denen sie eingeladen wurden. Weswegen ich zum Beispiel momentan keinen Sinn darin sehe mir Karten für die Vienna Comic Con im November zu kaufen, wenn die angekündigten Entertainment Gäste nicht über ihre Arbeit in den Serien, deretwegen sie eingeladen wurden, sprechen dürfen. Worüber sollten sie dann im Panel reden? Und wieso sollte ich ihnen Geld für ein Autogramm in den Rachen werfen, und wieso werden sie überhaupt für ihr Erscheinen bezahlt, wenn sie genau den Grund warum sie eingeladen wurdne nicht besprechen dürfen? Zugleich gibt es Sondererlaubnisse Independent-Filme zu drehen, oder Serien im Ausland für die bestreikten Firmen zu drehen, oder sich als großer reicher Star durch quasi Bestechungsgeld freizukaufen um auf Filmfestspiele oder Premieren von egal welchen Filmen zu gehen, Hauptsache man bezahlt genug, während die kleinen Stars, das aber nicht dürfen, obwohl ihre Filme gar keine großen Studio-Produktionen sind.

Jetzt haben wir ja schon öfter besprochen, dass tatsächliches Brechen des Streiks zum Ausschluss aus der Gewerkschaft führen würde, aber das wohl eben nur die tatsächliche Tätigkeit wäre, welche von der jeweiligen Gewerkschaft vertreten wird (also Schreiben für die WGA oder Schauspielern für die SAG).

Und das führte diese Woche zu neuer Verwirrung als die Rückkehr von sowohl der "Drew Barrymore-Show" als auch "Real Time with Bill Maher" ohne Skripts angekündigt wurde. Denn, zumindest Drew Barrymore ist definitiv ein Mitglied der SAG, wieso also darf sie wieder arbeiten? Weil Moderation scheinbar nicht unter schauspielern fällt, denn es gab schon einige Schauspieler, die sich als Moderatoren für diverse Dinge in der Streikzeit hergegeben haben (etwa zu einer Jubiläums-Feier von "Star Trek"), doch natürlich ist in Zeiten von Voraufzeichnungen nie klar wann irgendetwas aufgenommen wurde, es war also unklar ob die Moderationen durch Schauspieler seit Beginn des SAGs-Streiks nicht alle schon lange zuvor aufgezeichnet gewesen waren.

Doch die neuen Folgen von der "Drew Barrymore-Show" und "Real Time with Bill Maher" wurden definitiv nicht vor Beginn des Streiks aufgezeichnet, und obwohl es online Scabbing-Vorwürfe von den ach-so-lieben Kollegen gab, gab es keine offiziellen Schritte gegen sie. Und es ist verständlich, dass Drew Barrymore und Bill Maher an ihre Mitarbeiter (bzw. Angestellten) denken, die unverdienter Maßen seit bald einem halben Jahr ohne Ende in Sicht arbeitslos sind. Doch das sieht keiner, nein, man will während ihren Dreharbeiten laut live demonstrieren um klar zu machen was für böse Menschen sie doch sind, und sie müssen Entschuldigungsvideos drehen, weil sie es wagen wollen neue Folgen zu moderieren. Man wirft ihnen vor den Streik zu verlängern, weil ihre Beispiele die Studios ja denken lassen die Streikenden würden nachgeben. Und das obwohl die WGA selbst die Studios dazu aufgefordert hat einzeln mit ihnen zu verhandeln und auf ihre gesammelte Vertretung zu verzichten, was im Grunde genau die gleiche Strategie anders herum war. Ausgewählte AMC-Serien dürfen aus irgendwelchen undurchschaubaren Gründen drehen, obwohl AMC sich nicht mit den Gewerkschaften geeinigt hat, aber das ist okay, doch Live-Shows ohne Autoren zurück zu bringen ist es nicht? Obwohl in den Vorarb-Statements immer betont wurde, dass die neuen Folgen weniger gut sein werden, und es vielleicht eine gute Sache wäre den Leuten zu zeigen wie diese Shows ohne Hilfe ihrer Autoren aussehen würden.

Aber wie gesagt in dieser ganzen Schlammschlacht wurde kein einziges Mal gesagt, dass die Stars ihre Shows wegen des SAG-Streiks nicht drehen dürften, was dann wohl doch etwas merwürdig ist, zumindest für die Gehirne von Normalsterblichen. Denn entweder darf man überhaupt nicht für die Bestreikten arbeiten, oder man darf nur nicht für sie schauspielern - das sind die beiden Möglichkeiten, die es gibt, aber keine von beiden trifft offenbar zu. Und da soll man noch durchblicken?

Der Chef von Fox hat die Woche erkannt, dass die aktuellen Seasons der Network-Serien nur dann wie gewohnt stattfinden können, wenn die Streiks noch in diesem Monat enden. Passieren wird das wohl eher nicht. Was bedeutet, dass es vielleicht gar keine Network-Staffeln für die 2023/24-Season geben wird. Was den Leuten erst jetzt klar zu werden scheint.

Unterdessen plant Warner stur "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" im Dezember ins Kino zu bringen. Offenbar denken sie, dass sie nur einen großen Blockbuster für 2024 brauchen (nämlich "Dune II"). Was immer man da hinein interpretieren möchte.

Im Grunde kann man als normaler Mensch an dieser Stelle nur noch den Kopf schütteln, Hollywood abschreiben und wieder mal bestätigt bekommen, dass jeder immer nur an sich selbst und seine Bedürfnisse denkt. Richtig lustig wird es, wenn noch wer zu streiken beginnt. Vermutlich wird es die neu gegründete Gewerkschaft für Special Effects bei Disney sein. Und dann ist Hollywood endgültig tot, aber offenbar ist das ja genau das was alle Beteiligten wollen, abgesehen von denen, die weder Schauspieler, noch Autoren, noch Produzenten oder Studiovertreter sind und einfach nur gerne ihren Job tun würden. Aber die sind ja schon im Mai allen egal gewesen und werden immer allen egal sein.
