The camera department here is quite versatile with a 64 MP primary camera with optical image stabilisation; another rare feature in this budget. The rest of the camera department on this phone includes a 64 MP primary camera, an 8MP ultrawide shooter and a 2 MP macro camera. You get two cameras at the front (32 MP + 8 MP) to take care of portrait selfies and video calls; something that will please the selfie crowd. The phone runs Android 10 with Realme UI on top; an Android 11 update has started rolling out.

The design is similar to the first OnePlus Nord in many ways, but the textured glass back adds a lot more style. Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 review: What you need to know

The Note 9 isn’t the only Redmi phone to launch in the UK this year, as Xiaomi has also released the Redmi Note 9S and Redmi Note 9 Pro. There is also a Redmi Note 9 Pro Max floating around in the international markets but, as far as we know, it won’t be coming to Blighty. The Redmi Note 9 is the smallest and cheapest of the three Redmi phones you can buy in the UK.

It’s available in two configurations, coming with either 3GB of RAM and 64GB of storage or 4GB of RAM and 128GB storage. For this review, Xiaomi has sent us the heftier 4GB/128GB loadout. The Redmi Note 9 runs Xiaomi’s MIUI 11 operating system, which is based on Android 10 and is powered by an Octa-core MediaTek Helio G85 chipset. Like the Redmi Note 8T before it, it has some luxury features that you wouldn’t expect from a budget smartphone, including a quadruple rear camera.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 review: Price and competition

The cheaper Redmi Note 9, with 3GB of RAM and 64GB storage, has launched for the reasonable sum of £179, which is exactly the same price as the Redmi Note 8T we reviewed some months back. That variant isn't available in the UK yet, but the 4GB/128GB model we're testing here has been released in the UK with an RRP of £199.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 review: Design

Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 8T was a beauty of a budget phone, but I’m less enamoured with the Redmi Note 9. The greyish-blue colour of its plastic chassis is rather dull, although it catches the light nicely at certain angles, and I’m not a fan of the way Xiaomi has placed the fingerprint reader and quad camera into one big rectangular box on the rear.

The camera module isn’t flush with the back either, so it doesn’t rest flush against a flat surface when placed face up. The body itself feels cheap to the touch, and it’s quick to collect greasy fingerprints. That’s less of an issue on the front, where the display is protected by a smooth layer of Gorilla Glass 5.

On that note, the face of the phone has seen an improvement. The bezels surrounding the display are just as slim as those of the Note 8T, if not slimmer, and Xiaomi has done away with the central teardrop notch of the Note 8T. Instead, the selfie camera is embedded inside the upper left corner of the display. It fits in quite well and looks much sleeker than the old notch design but, if you don’t like it, you can always conceal it by activating the black notch-hiding bar using the display settings.

Although the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 is bigger than its predecessor, with a 6.53in display to the Note 8T’s 6.3in, it manages to weigh a gram less at 199g. Measuring 162 x 77 x 8.9mm, the phone definitely falls into the larger end of the spectrum, however. When holding the phone in one hand, it’s a serious stretch to reach the upper row of apps with my thumb without first sliding the phone down my palm.

Elsewhere, the design remains much the same. There is a combined dual-SIM and microSD tray on the left edge and, on the right-hand side, you’ll find the power button and volume rocker. The bottom edge houses a 3.5mm audio jack, a lone speaker and a USB-C charging port. Wireless charging isn’t on the cards, though at this price that won’t come as much of a surprise. It does at least support NFC for contactless payments, which is an essential feature in these times.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 review: Display

As I mentioned previously, the Redmi Note 9’s IPS display measures 6.53in across the diagonal and has a 2,340 x 1,080 resolution, giving it a pixel density of 395 pixels per inch. In that regard, it’s not much different to the Note 8T, which has a marginally smaller screen but exactly the same resolution.

There are actually three display modes, or ‘colour schemes’, on the Redmi Note 9: Auto, Saturated and Standard. We tested all three using a professional colour calibrator and found that the Auto and Saturated modes offer the best experience, both covering roughly 93% of the sRGB colour gamut with a gamut volume of around 108%.

Overall colour accuracy is actually slightly better in Saturated mode compared to Auto mode; we recorded average Delta E results of 3.04 and 3.74, respectively, meaning the Saturated setting comes closer to delivering natural colours.

To my eyes, however, the Auto setting – which adjusts colours ‘based on the current lighting’ – is easily the most appealing in terms of colour reproduction. It’s the brightest mode too, producing a maximum luminance of just over 359cd/m². The Standard mode is the worst of the three by far, as it reduces the display’s brightness significantly while simultaneously bathing the screen in a warm candle-like hue.

Provided you stick to the Auto setting, this is a fantastic FHD display with a high contrast ratio of 1,132:1 and strong colour vibrancy that lends plenty of pop to on-screen images, and it’s bright enough to use outdoors without having to squint.

That’s all well and good, but how does it compare to the Redmi Note 8T? Well, the Note 8T we tested had a fantastic display that covered 95.7% of the sRGB gamut with a volume of 96.5%, so colours looked great without being oversaturated. Additionally, it had a higher maximum brightness of 482cd/m2 and a superior 1,517:1 contrast ratio. In short, the Note 8T’s display was better.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 review: Performance and battery life

In raw power terms, the Redmi Note 9 is on par with its predecessor. It’s powered by an Octa-core MediaTek Helio G85 CPU which is backed by 4GB of RAM and achieved similar single-core and multi-core results to the Redmi 8T with its Qualcomm Snapdragon 655.

The Moto G8 – which packs that same 655 chip – scored nigh-on identical results. The true champion here, though, is the Realme 6. Packing a MediaTek G90T CPU, it pulled slightly ahead of every other budget rival in our GeekBench testing, as demonstrated in the chart below.

The gaming capabilities of the Redmi Note 9 are certainly up to scratch. Since it has an FHD display, it won’t be able to hit the same onscreen frame rates as budget phones with lower resolution screens, like the Moto G8, but it’s worth the hit for that extra detail.

I was able to play demanding online Android titles like Call of Duty: Mobile without suffering any notable frame rate drops across consecutive games.It’s also able to run PUBG Mobile pretty cleanly in HD and with the frame rate set to high, but towards the end of one longer match the rear of the phone was getting toasty so I had to drop it down to medium settings. In games like these, the extra-large screen actually gives you an advantage over many players too, because everything’s that little bit easier to see.

Despite the phone’s ample display size and FHD resolution, the Redmi Note 9’s 5,020mAh battery managed to keep it going for 15hrs 44mins in our standardised battery rundown test.

That’s 51 minutes longer than the Redmi Note 8T lasted in the same test, though it still falls well short compared to the battery efficiency of the Moto G8 and Realme 6. The Note 9’s battery life is impressive nonetheless, and on a full charge, it will last you an entire day of moderate usage without needing a top-up.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 review: Camera

As you know by now, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 has a quadruple rear camera. This camera setup may have moved position since the Redmi 8T but its specifications remain much the same: each of the individual cameras has the same megapixel and aperture as they did on the 8T.

The primary snapper is, of course, that 48MP, f/1.8 monster, which is supported by an 8MP, f/2.2 wide-angle lens, a 2MP, f/2.4 depth module for taking bokeh (or blurred background) shots and, finally, a 2MP, f/2.4 macro lens for shooting small objects up close and personal.

That macro snapper is particularly impressive, as you can see from the detail it captured on the rim of a 5p coin and the soft fur of a koala teddy bear.

Due to the constraints of working remotely, I was unable to conduct out our usual office-based camera tests, so I’ve had to make do with snapping some local landmarks, such as the local yard and the houses visible outside my window.

The level of precision achieved by the 48MP module is remarkable, just as it was on the Note 8T. Vegetation and brickwork come out clearly defined, even when shot from a considerable distance, and the colours look vibrant and realistic.

Xiaomi’s camera software is straightforward and shoots in HDR at 12MP by default. You need to switch shooting modes if you would rather capture 48MP images. The ‘Pro’ shooting mode is great fun to play around with, and it’s useful too, allowing you to manually tweak the focus, ISO and shutter speed to your liking.

At the front, Xiaomi has equipped the Redmi Note 9 with a single 13MP (f/2.3) camera which, on paper, sounds like a downgrade from the Note 8T’s 13MP (f/2.0) shooter. It’s good, but it does seem to flatten out detail in an effort to beautify its subjects. I ended up looking a lot less stubbly and lockdown-crazed than I really was, which I suppose was a bonus.

Video shoots in 1080p at 30fps on both the selfie camera and main quad camera. Quality is great for a budget phone and, on the rear snapper, it’s helped along nicely with some effective image stabilisation. Aspiring TikTok stars will be pleased to know that there’s a separate ‘short video’ shooting mode that captures footage in fifteen-second chunks.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 review: Verdict

Whether you buy the £179 model or the £199 version tested here, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 is incredible value for money. It has a large, good-quality FHD display, a fantastic quadruple camera setup and it delivers performance that’s on par with one of its key competitors, the Motorola Moto G8.

Up until this point, we’ve held the Redmi Note 8T up as the pinnacle of budget smartphone technology. In most regards, the Redmi Note 9 is better – or at least as good – as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8T that came before it. With that said, the Redmi Note 8T’s display was more colour accurate, brighter and had a higher contrast than the Note 9’s. Ultimately, if you have less than £200 to spend and want to get the most from your money, then you’d be equally happy with either phone.

It has a 64 MP, f/1.8, 26 mm wide main camera will give you fantastic photos with great detail in the right conditions. Though you might have a bit of noise in the quality of photos.

In low light the main camera takes wonderful photos, preserving the color while still gives you significant details in the shot you are taking. Night mode brings a boost in the shadows and it improves in the highlight retention, even though you lose on the sharpness.

Shots from the 8 MP, f/2.3, 13mm ultra-wide cameras are nice. You will notice good detail and a wide dynamic range. If you shoot with the Ultra-wide camera at night, you cannot get great photos. Their exposure is dark, even though the detail is okay.

In pleasant light, you will love the photos that you can take with the 12 MP, f/2.5, 54mm telephoto camera with plenty of detail, wider dynamic range, and lovelier colors.

The dedicated 2 MP f/2.4 macro camera doesn’t take great photos, there is plenty of noise, limited dynamic range. It seems more like an excuse for Realme to have a quad camera. Must be good for marketing.

You can shoot with the telephoto at night, and the performance is alright. The zoom-in this device has trouble focusing at night.

The Realme 6 Pro has a dual selfie, comprising a 60 MP and an 8MP ultra-wide camera. You will love capturing selfies with the ultra-wide. The HDR effect gives you smoother photos with more color rendition.

You can shoot videos of up to ultra-high definition 4k@30fps and 1080p @30/60/120fps. The video content has saturated colors and with a good dynamic range. But the sharpening is a little much, and the overall video is grainy.

As far as stabilization goes, the 4k doesn’t have any. Use a tripod if you want to get stable videos.

Infinix S5 Pro Review

Infinix has lately upped its game in the budget segment and has been launching phones with promising hardware at very competitive price points. The company has boasted of launching the most affordable phones with three rear cameras and a hole-punch display. Now, Infinix is looking to nab another first with the Infinix S5 Pro – claimed to be the lowest priced phone packing a pop-up selfie camera. The latest Infinix model also features three rear cameras with a 48-megapixel main snapper, a pixel-dense full-HD+ notchless display, and a decent 4,000mAh battery.

The brand, owned by Transsion Holdings, is also jumping onto the Android 10 bandwagon with the Infinix S5 Pro. With the grand ambition of taking the fight to popular Chinese smartphone makers such as Xiaomi and Realme, does this device have enough substance to actually emerge as a solid alternative? We find out in our review:

Infinix S5 Pro design and build quality

Infinix S5 Pro’s rear panel is made of plastic and attracts dust particles really quickly

Big and bold – these are the two words that first came to mind when we took the Infinix S5 Pro out of its retail package. The frame and rear panel of the phone are made out of plastic, but the build quality is good. We noticed minor flex, especially in the middle of the rear panel and along the edges, but not enough to be noticable with day-to-day usage, and much better than the flimsy Infinix Hot 8 (Review). The rear panel is curved on all four sides and meets the frame without creating any sharp edges.

Infinix has done a good job of giving the rear panel a glass-like finish, and thankfully, the phone is not too slippery. The colour options are both rather garish, and won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. The Violet colour option that we had for review has a strong pink undertone that gradually darkens and looks purplish towards the edges, including the frame. The glossy rear panel has a mirror-like finish and is extremely reflective. The other option is Forest Green which is equally bright.

This look might appeal to people who like vivid colours and drawing attention. Unfortunately, the Infinix S5 Pro is only available in these two colours, and if you are looking for a more subtle option, you are out of luck.

The phone has a large notchless display that is crisp and offers good viewing angles

The rear camera module creates a large bump and makes the phone wobble when placed on a flat surface. Also, the design seems very similar to that of the Vivo V15, down to the shape and placement of the fingerprint scanner and the physical buttons. The volume and power buttons are within reach and offer a clicky response. As for the pop-up front camera, Infinix says it has been designed to withstand 150,000 lifts, which translates to 50 cycles each day for over eight years. However, we noticed that dust easily accumulates around the pop-up module.

The Infinix S5 Pro doesn’t look like a budget phone from the front, thanks to the notch-less display. However, it is stuck with a Micro-USB port, which is disappointing since rivals have now moved on to the modern USB Type-C standard. The phone has a triple slot tray for two Nano-SIMs and a microSD card, which is a sigh of relief since there’s no hybrid solution. The fingerprint sensor was not accurate in our experience, which was a huge annoyance. It failed to recognize our fingerprint in one go almost every time we tried to unlock the phone.

Infinix S5 Pro specifications and software

The Infinix S5 Pro has a 6.53-inch full-HD+ IPS LCD display with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio, which makes for a 91 percent screen-to-body ratio. The panel has a pixel density of 403ppi and Infinix has used 2.5G curved-edge NEG Dinorex glass for protection. The phone does not come with a pre-applied screen protector.

Infinix S5 Pro has decent build quality, but one-handed usage is a bit difficult

Infinix’s latest offering relies on the MediaTek Helio P35 SoC paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage, which can be expanded by 256GB. The phone is equipped with a 4,000mAh battery, but fast charging is limited to 10W. Connectivity is handled by 4G LTE, Bluetooth 5, and Wi-Fi 802.11ac. There is also a 3.5mm headphone jack at the bottom, sitting alongside the mono speaker.

The Infinix S5 Pro’s triple rear camera setup is headlined by a 48-megapixel OmniVision sensor with an f/1.79 aperture. There is also a 2-megapixel depth camera and a dedicated low-light sensor. Interestingly, the company markets the Infinix S5 Pro as a triple rear camera phone, but only one of the three sensors is actually capable of taking photos on its own. The pop-up module houses a 16-megapixel front camera with an f/2.0 aperture. Camera features include AR emojis, Portrait HDR, and wide selfies.

The Infinix S5 Pro runs Android 10 with the custom XOS 6.0 UI. Our review unit was stuck on the dated November 2019 Android security patch. Aside from a native dark theme, the Android 10-based iteration of XOS does not bring any notable new features to the table, and its design also remains unchanged. There is a tonne of bloatware; both first-party and third-party. Notably, Kika keyboard still ships as the default on the Infinix S5 Pro, despite having being booted from the Google Play Store because of ad fraud.

Infinix S5 Pro claims to be the most affordable phone with a pop-up selfie camera in India

The preinstalled Palm Store and AHA Games apps act as Play Store alternatives, but the quality of apps they offer is poor. Some of the preinstalled apps send spammy notifications, but this can be turned off. XOS 6.0 also shows a carousel of instant apps at the top when you pull up the app drawer. These are essentially online apps that don’t need to be downloaded and installed, but they are also inundated with ads, which can be quite frustrating.

On the bright side, XOS 6.0 also offers some useful features. We quite like the convenience offered by the Smart Panel, which allows quick access to frequently used apps and tools. We also noticed that navigation gestures are more reliable compared to XOS 5.0 on older Infinix phones. The Social Turbo feature is pretty interesting, and lets you record WhatsApp calls, apply automatic face beautification in video calls, and see messages that have been recalled by their senders. Infinix has said that this has been developed in collaboration with WhatsApp and users’ security and privacy have not been compromised even though Social Turbo has full access to your messages.

Infinix S5 Pro performance

The screen of the Infinix S5 Pro is crisp, and viewing angles are acceptable. Colours are punchy, but there is a distinct bluish tinge to the display which makes everything appear a little cold. Unfortunately, there is no system setting to adjust the colour profile or the temperature of the display.

Infinix S5 Pro runs XOS 6.0 based on Android 10

The brightness is adequate, and we did not have to struggle while using this phone outdoors under direct sunlight. However, a minor annoyance is that the display is quite reflective, which is especially evident when the UI’s dark mode is enabled. Also, despite its full-HD+ resolution, this phone is only Widevine L3 certified, which means you cannot stream HD or higher resolution content on platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

Coming to actual performance, the MediaTek Helio P35 chip proves to be reliable, as long as you stick to common tasks. The phone handled multitasking between apps with ease, and did not resort to aggressive RAM management with 10-15 social media and productivity apps running in the background. However, gaming is where the MediaTek Helio P35 starts to struggle.

Casual games such as Mario Kart and Alto’s Odyssey ran fine, but the phone struggled with graphics-intensive games. PUBG Mobile ran at the Balanced graphics setting with the frame rate set to Medium, while COD Mobile defaulted to the Low graphics preset. Even so, we noticed frame drops and occasional stutters every now and then. Synthetic benchmark tests also narrate a similar story.

Infinix S5 Pro benchmark scores compared against Redmi Note 8 and Realme C3

The Infinix S5 Pro scored 187 and 1,070 in the Geekbench 5 single and multi-core tests respectively. Coming to the more graphics intensive benchmarks, the phone reached 449 in 3DMark Sling Shot Extreme and 822 in the 3DMark Sling Shot tests. It is quite evident that the Helio P35 is weaker than the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665, which can be found inside phones in the same price bracket. Also, it performs significantly worse than the MediaTek Helio G70, which powers the Realme C3 which is priced even lower at Rs. 6,999.

Coming to the cameras, the layout of the default camera app remains unchanged. All the camera modes including Video, AI cam, Beauty, and Bokeh Effect, among others, are located in a row at the bottom, while the HDR, flash, scene mode, and settings icons are at the top. Notably, there is no Pro mode in the camera app, and you also can’t take photos in 16:9 aspect ratio. Another quirk is that despite having a dedicated low-light sensor, there is no Night mode.

The Infinix S5 Pro is severely undercut by rivals that offer more versatility in the form of wide-angle and macro cameras, but what it lacks in versatility, the Infinix S5 Pro tries to make up with raw image output. Daylight photos turn out really well for a phone priced under Rs. 10,000. The images are crisp and retain a good amount of detail. There is good contrast, and dynamic range is decent as well. We quite liked the fact that the Infinix S5 Pro does not overprocess photos, and colours look natural. However, the phone occasionally struggled with white balance under harsh sunlight and produced washed-out landscape shots.

The phone also impressed us with its close-ups, which retain a healthy amount of detail and have punchy colours. Another strong area of the Infinix S5 Pro is portrait shots. The phone did a good job of subject separation and the depth effect was acceptable. Edge detection was also decent, except with hair when the subject in focus was a human.

Low-light photography is definitely not this phone’s forte. Despite packing a dedicated low-light sensor, night shots turned out grainy with minimal sharpness and contrast. We tested the low-light sensor’s effectiveness by physically covering it, but couldn’t spot any visible difference in photos except for a slightly higher ISO. The phone would have produced better results by combining multiple shots captured at different exposure levels using a Night mode.

Selfies captured by the 16-megapixel front camera look pleasing and skin tones were natural, but there is not much to resolve in terms of detail if you zoom in. Infinix has toned down the aggressive skin smoothening that we have seen on its previous phones, which is a welcome move. What we didn’t like was that the background is overblown in selfies shot outdoors under sunlight. Portrait selfies look decent, but the background blur is flat.

There is a wide selfie mode, but the results were almost always distorted. There is also an AR emoji feature, but the animated face avatars look more like bad 2D masks. Head movements are captured smoothly, but eye tracking could have been better.

Battery life was just about average. With regular usage that involved day-long Internet connectivity, up to three hours of music playback over Bluetooth headphones, and around an hour of gaming and social media usage each, the phone had 20-25 percent left in its battery at the end of the day. Playing a graphics-intensive game such as PUBG Mobile for half an hour consumed 10 percent of the battery, and the phone didn’t get too hot.

In our HD video battery loop test, the Infinix S5 Pro lasted 15 hours and 42 minutes before the battery fully discharged. The bundled 10W charger is quite slow though. It took 61 minutes to charge the 4,000mAh battery up to the 50 percent mark, after which the charging rate slowed down and it took an additional 1 hour and 53 minutes to charge this phone fully.

Verdict

The Infinix S5 Pro has a few things going in its favour. The notchless full-HD+ display and pop-up selfie camera are impressive for a phone in this price bracket.The performance, however, is just middling, and when compared to equally priced rivals, this phone leaves a lot to be desired. The main camera performs well in the daytime, but despite packing a dedicated low-light sensor, night photography output is sub-par. Battery life is also barely average, and it takes almost three hours to charge the 4,000mAh battery.

If your primary concerns are style and standing out, and you can make a few compromises in terms of functionality, the Infinix S5 Pro could be a decent pick for Rs. 9,999. On the other hand, if you want the maximum value for your money, the Redmi Note 8, Realme 5S, and Vivo U10 are better than the Infinix phone in almost all key areas.

The week past had its fair share of personal technology headlines, from WhatsApp finally gaining a dark mode (albeit in beta) to Samsung launching two of its ‘affordable' premium smartphones in the country – the Galaxy Note 10 Lite and Galaxy S10 Lite. The Oppo F15 – a mid-ranger from the Chinese smartphone company – went on sale in India this week, while Qualcomm used India as the setting for the launch of its new budget and mid-range smartphone processors. Xiaomi and HMD Global's Nokia brand also made headlines this week when the two companies cut prices of popular smartphones in their lineup, namely the Mi A3, Redmi K20 Pro, Redmi Go, Nokia 7.2, and Nokia 6.2. Read on for all the top tech news of the week past.WhatsApp dark mode finally availableFacebook-owned WhatsApp this week launched its ‘dark' theme, the much-awaited new feature. In a world where most apps now offer a dark mode, WhatsApp was one of the holdouts, despite being used by more than a billion people globally. Apart from being easier on the eyes in low-light environments, a dark mode would also be useful in extending battery life of your device if it features an OLED display panel.In a beta build for Android, the company has introduced the dark theme within settings. To use the feature, you will need to install the Android beta via the Google Play Beta testing programme. If you're unable to register for the programme, another method is sideloading the latest beta via APK Mirror. The feature was first spotted this week in v2.20.13, but dark mode can be observed in later beta builds as well – such as v2.20.16.We can expect WhatsApp dark mode to make its way to the stable Android app soon, apart from the iPhone app soon, and WhatsApp for Web. To use the feature in the previously mentioned Android beta builds, you'll need to visit Settings > Chats > Display > Theme. Here, you will find three options – System Default, Light, and Dark. The first, System Default, will switch between light and dark themes depending on what your current system-wide setting is on Android 10. vivo U20 Review - The Budget Phone You Cannot Miss!

Vivo had recently launched the second phone under its U Series – the vivo U20. It’s the successor to the vivo U10 which received quite a nice response and feedback from buyers and now, the vivo U20 comes with further improvements. It is now powered by a more powerful processor and packs a huge 5000mAh battery. However, the pricing is still very humble as the phone starts at Rs. 10990. As per the specs sheet, the phone should be a good deal for most people but is it really worth paying for U20 when there are competitors out there? Let’s find out.

Design & Display

The vivo U20 features a 6.53-inch In-cell LCD 2.5D display with an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. It is a Full HD+ display with a pixel density of about 394 PPI. There are minimal bezels around the display. The display is bright, sunlight visibility is also good. The colors are vibrant and texts look quite sharp.

There is a waterdrop notch above the display which houses the 16-megapixel camera and above the camera, there is an earpiece, but, there is no notification LED. On the right edge of the phone, there are the power button and the volume rockers whereas the dual SIM card slot and the dedicated microSD slots are placed at the left edge. vivo has opted for a triple slot instead of two separate slots for microSD and SIM cards. The bottom of the phone houses the 3.5mm audio jack, microphone, micro USB port, and the loudspeaker grill.

The back of the phone is quite packed with cameras. There is a triple camera setup placed at the left edge which houses three cameras vertically. There is the 16-megapixel Sony IMX499 sensor with f/1.78 aperture, 8-megapixel 120° wide-angle camera with f/2.2 aperture and a 2-megapixel macro lens with f/2.4 aperture. Below the three sensors, there is an LED flash. The camera module has some sort of ring going around it and it protrudes out a bit. There is a fingerprint sensor next to the camera module, placed symmetrically in the middle.

The back has a gradient look and it’s quite glossy. It looks premium but attracts fingerprints quite easily. We have the Racing Black color version, and the phone also comes in Blazing Blue color with a clear case right in the box, and using it makes the camera bump less noticeable. The phone is a tad heavy to hold in the hand, due to the huge 5000mAh battery. In terms of design, looks and display the phone is quite good actually and despite being a bit heavy, most people who are looking for a phone with a great battery won’t complain including me.

Camera

vivo is a brand that has been emphasizing the camera at a lot for its smartphones and the vivo U20 is no exception. At the launch of the phone, the company had given a lot of importance to the camera. On paper, the camera department looks quite good on the vivo U20. There is the 16-megapixel Sony IMX499 sensor with f/1.78 aperture, 8-megapixel SKHynix Hi-846 sensor 120° wide-angle camera with f/2.2 aperture and a 2-megapixel GalaxyCore GC2375 sensor with f/2.4 aperture for macro shots. On the front, the vivo U20 sports a16-megapixel camera for video calls and selfies. However, we can see the presence of an LED flash only on the back but not on the front.

The camera UI is quite good – Simple but with toggles the most used features like flash, HDR, filters, aspect ratio, and the camera settings on top. A button in the camera UI for camera settings is something new here and it’s a well-thought implementation in my opinion. At the bottom, there are the options to switch between ultra-wide camera and super macro. Beyond that, outside the viewfinder, there are those classic scrollable camera modes and there are quite a few of them-Night, Portrait, Photo, Video, along with an option opens up more modes like Panorama, Live Photo, Slo-mo, Time-Lapse, Pro, AR Stickers, Jovi AI and Doc mode. Below that there is an image preview button on the left, shutter key at the middle and the toggle for changing between the front and rear camera on the right side. The vivo U20 supports Camera2 API by default, but it doesn’t support capturing in RAW.

Now, in terms of the actual performance of the camera, pictures taken in broad daylight are quite nice, macro shots are also quite good, and the wide-angle camera gets the job done. There is no dedicated depth sensor or a telephoto, so the software processes the portrait shots. The portrait shots are great most of the time, but not the best as sometimes it messes up the edge detection. The photos taken in low light are decent, but the situation can ben improved a bit using the Night Mode.

The front camera on the vivo U20 is good. It comes with AI-based beautification which improves shots for many, but well, I’m not a fan of beautification so I turned it off right away. Overall, in terms of pictures, the vivo U20 is quite nice for the budget and will not disappoint! In terms of videos, it can record in 4k 30 fps and 1080p videos at up to 60 fps. The video quality is good and EIS works fine, although EIS works only for 1080p videos. You can also record full HD videos using the ultra-wide camera and the phone also supports slow-mo and time-lapse captures.

Performance

The vivo U20 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 64-bit octa-core processor built which has got two Cortex A76-based Kryo 460 CPUs clocked at 2GHz and other six Cortex A55 Kryo 460 CPUs, clocked at 1.7GHz. It comes with Adreno 612 GPU and 6GB LPDDR4x RAM. The actual performance of the phone is quite good. There were no issues with regular usage like browsing, watching videos and multitasking. Even during intense gaming, I didn’t notice any frame drops or lags, especially while playing PUBG with settings set to medium. I tried a couple of games on the phones and well it handled everything quite nicely. So, performance-wise, there aren’t any compromises for the price you pay, I would say. However, if you’re a gamer and if you have the extra budget, you may look for alternatives but at this price, this is one of the choices out there for gamers as well. And for normal users, the performance is beyond the limit they can push.

Software

In terms of software, the vivo U20 runs the Funtouch OS 9.2 based on Android 9 Pie. I saw that the phone is having the security patch for November and small updates are always rolling out, which is a good thing in terms of bug fixes as well as for keeping the phone safe. As of now, there are no words from vivo regarding the Android 10 upgrade.

FunTouch OS 9.2 is quite improved. There are navigation gestures by vivo which I am a fan of works great but ultimately I feel comfortable more with the navigation button. There are many features packed into the software like Smart Wake, Smart Turn On/Off for the display, One-handed Mode, App clone and a lot of other features.

There is the Game Cube, which is quite handy while gaming. There is Flashlight Notifications Option that blinks for incoming calls, messages and event alerts. In terms of bloatware, there are quite a lot of preinstalled apps – Facebook, WhatsApp, Gaana, Amazon, Dailyhunt, Opera, Paytm and WhatsApp and of course, users can uninstall these apps anytime, so that’s not an issue you may be bothered about.

Battery

The vivo U20 packs a huge 5000mAh battery and the phone can easily last for two days under moderate usage. I could easily get through one and a half days after I fully charged the phone. The phone supports 18W fast charging and as per my observation, the phone takes just around 50 minutes to get charged from 0-50% and for one full charge, it takes around two hours. There is also support for reverse charging so that you can charge another phone by connecting it to the vivo U20. In terms of battery life and with that reverse charging, the phone reminds me of the Zenfone Max series from ASUS. After the Zenfone Max series, this is the first time, I have seen any phone performing this well in terms of battery. I’ve been able to get 6-7 hours of Screen-on-time with around 2-3 days of standby which includes lots of battery-intensive gaming & video streaming.

Final Verdict

The vivo U20 is a really promising phone and it’s worth spending the amount on it. The overall performance is good, the camera is promising & battery life is killer on the device. U series devices by vivo compete against budget devices of Redmi & Realme and for the overall experience & quality, I would recommend buying U20 over those.
