Some new posts up on my blog… A bit about why I’m looking forward to @prismatic.leeds tomorrow at @imaginarium_leeds and also why I’m not going to perform. This isn’t just an overview of the event, it’s more a bit of self-reflection. I’ve also written a short piece about some record reviews I’ve done recently (on the new @weapons_of_desire EP, the new one from @planetorangerecords and one a while ago on the EP by @_mazewski on @brutaz ) for @hideous.things and linked to them. An older album gets a new review from Voix de Garage!
PyPy "Pagan Day" LP, CD, Digital
"I realize while writing this column that I should not have slept during the lessons on alchemy, so I will be able to explain to you why the mixtures that we find inside the music of this group make that I find her wonderful. This one rather than another. Indie Psych Punk + danceable Post Punk + plague voice + big, clear and powerful (and… precise) sound. 7 titles for 32 mn, rather diversified with changing atmospheres. A lot of work on the voices: the female vocals being essential, but not unique throughout the songs. PyPy is the side project of some members of the prolific Montreal scene, we find mixed in there CPC Gangbangs / Red Mass and Duchess Says. But this album really sounds like a band! It's exciting, powerful, dancing (well to a certain extent). Surely the most Indie thing came out on Black Gladiator/Slovenly Rds, with the cleanest sound but with enough balls in it to treat you well! It is listened to again and again. And it's the foot!"

@offshelfdotnet gave some thoughts on the new @singinglungs LP: "'Coming Around' may put you in mind of Husker Du, the Replacements, early Soul Asylum, and bands of that ilk, and as Martha Stewart might say, that is a good thing." Read the review above or see all the reviews at @offshelfdotnet. Audio and purchase links in bio. Album Review Tom Morello: The Atlas Underground (Oct. 12, 2018) Rating: 70/100 I'm not going to be as harsh on this record as some reviewers have been. Some of the beat styles featured on The Atlas Underground were done and done better by artists like Aphex Twin 30 years ago, and the other digital effects that masquerade as music ruined potentially good tracks like How Long, Battle Sirens, Vigilante Nocturno and Lead Poisoning and weighed down the whole. That said, beyond the first track, Rabbit's Revenge was a killer tune, and while Every Step That I Take is not my cup of tea, it has a good chorus melody. The same can be said for We Don't Need You. Find Another Way with Marcus Mumford and Lucky One with K.Flay might be the best pure songs on the record, and I like the flow and style of Leikeli47 on Roadrunner. I had never heard her before, but she gives me Tupac vibes in how she delivers the lyrics. As for Tom Morello, many of his riffs and pedal sounds don't really add anything new to the equation, and it feels like we've heard all of this before, even though nothing is wrong with any of it. But he has a certain familiar style, and he sticks to it here. Fans of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, almost to the person I bet, prefer just straightaway rock without all the digital mumbojumbo that pervades much of this record and drags down the rest of it. It is possible that he is, as some have claimed, shamelessly pandering, but being familiar with Rage's music and his contributions to it, Morello doesn't seem like the pandering type, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and conjecture that Morella attempted to bridge a musical gap - admittedly, with mixed results - across generations. Whatever the case, fans of his earlier two bands can find some elements that they like in this record if they give it a chance. (I edited this for space. A link to all my reviews is in the bio.) #music #musicreview #musicreviewer #newmusic #newmusicfriday #tommorello #alt #altrock #alternative #alternativerock #album #albumreview #record #recordreview #indie #indierock #rock #rockreview (at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj0qCwMOCkx/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Kenji Kariu, Sekai (Bruit Direct Disques, 2020)
It’s not easy to come across information about Kenji Kariu. I just know he plays guitar in a band called OWKMJ, which, from what I can tell from the videos I found online, is a completely bonkers math-prog-jazz DMT trip of a band. Sekai, though, his 3rd solo album and his debut on French label Bruit Direct, has a very different vibe.
The first feeling you get is that the record isn’t even meant for you to listen, such is the intimacy and fragility that emanate from the songs. They’re all built on very essential drum machine beats and a few, sparse chords played on synths or guitars. The star of the show is Kariu’s voice here. Everything revolves around simple, almost childish, melodies that are sung in an understated, middle-of-the-night hush tone. Then there are layers of more vocal sounds, used as back up for a 60s pop vibe, or mangled by weird effects for a more contemporary and slightly eerie left-of-center feel.
The more you listen to the record, the more you realize it’s not as low-key and demure as it seems, and you really appreciate Kariu’s depth of vision: for example, “Atelier” is really an amazing pop song of the 80s throwback variety, shimmering with chorus-laden guitars and with a bassline that’s as simple as it is groovy. But then you have stuff like “Birthday”, with its very raw home recorded feeling, or “YanaKotori”, sounding like a children’s TV show theme. I can’t help being reminded of Kevin Ayers when I think about this approach.
To add to the weirdness, the record is complete with a lyric sheet translated from Japanese. I didn’t read the lyrics through the first few listens, but when I did I was really fascinated: they all seem to operate through a dreamlike, hallucinatory state (dare I say hypnagogic?) with a lot of synesthesia and sometimes funny connections: “The rabbit came out of the ATM / I left the line, I was confused / It was a good old day, I used to have a centipede.” Maybe there’s a cultural barrier there, or maybe Kariu is just a genuinely strange and very interesting guy.
Click here to listen to “Atelier” on Bandcamp or buy the record from Bruit Direct’s website.

Crate Digger’s Corner: A String Of Albums, Waylon To Rosenwinkel
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Crate Digger’s Corner…by DJ Musically Rich
Today in Crate Digger’s Corner, I’m going to string another series of albums together for you that will give you another set of albums to check out during these times while stuck at home! The journey starts out in Nashville, TN with an album from the mid-‘70s Outlaw Country movement. From there, we will go to California, hop over to Jamaica, and take a detour through England before coming back to America for some hip-hop and jazz.
Waylon Jennings- I’ve Always Been Crazy > Jimmy Buffett- A White Sport Coat And A Pink Crustacean- Waylon puts out another classic Outlaw Country album with a set of Nashville’s best sidemen. Jimmy Buffett’s second album still has him focusing on a folk/country sound with a set of players that also include some top notch players including Steve Goodman and Memphis-born Reggie Young who plays guitar in the backing band on both of the above albums!
Buffett > Old & In The Way- s/t- The one notable player I didn’t mention above in Buffett’s band is the carryover to Old & In The Way, fiddler Vassar Clements. The great bluegrass fiddler joins the supergroup including Jerry Garcia, John Kahn and Peter Rowan for a great, one-off live, bluegrass album (2 later albums came out that contained 2 full shows that went into the creation of this album).
Old & In The Way > Peter Rowan- Reggaebilly!- Peter Rowan goes from Old & In The Way to his solo album, Reggaebilly!, which combines reggae and bluegrass in both the musical content and the players!
Rowan > Lee Perry “The Upsetter” presents- Roast Fish, Collie Weed & Corn Bread- One of the reggae artists that were part of the Peter Rowan album is extremely well-known guitarist, Earl “Chinna” Smith. He is one of the most recorded reggae musicians ever and was also on Lee Perry’s album “Roast Fish, Collie Weed & Corn Bread”, which also contained drummer…
Lee Perry > Peter Tosh- Bush Doctor- Sly Dunbar. Best known as half of the duo Sly & Robbie he also played drums for many other reggae artists and on a ton of albums. That includes the album “Bush Doctor” by Peter Tosh. This album was made shortly after Tosh befriended the Rolling Stones and had The Stones down in Jamaica for the making of the album which is how it included guitarist…
Tosh > Keith Richards- Crosseyed Heart- Keith Richards. Obviously, best known as the guitarist for The Stones, Keith Richards played with Tosh and I’m following that with one of his recent solo releases “Crosseyed Heart”. This album also features some backup vocals from…
Keith Richards > Q-Tip- The Renaissance- Norah Jones. She not only is working with Richards, but she also shows up on Q-Tip’s “The Renaissance” singing the hook for the song ‘Life Is Better’.
Q-Tip > Kurt Rosenwinkel- Heartcore- Q-Tip is the holdover into my final album on this trip. He is going from his solo album here to produce the amazing jazz guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel and his album “Heartcore”. A laid back album, overall, Q-Tip shows that he can venture far away from the world of hip-hop and dives headlong into a jazz album from an (at the time) young and upcoming guitarist who has sense proven to be one of the best modern jazz artists we have.
I hope you have the chance to check out some of these albums and find a new favorite or two!
Enjoy the music!

Thanks so Adam Baruch for your words! Szmanda / Nubiola / Mazurkiewicz – “Ten Plagues” This is the debut album by a trio consisting of Cuban (resident in Poland) saxophonist Luis Nubiola and Polish bassist Jacek Mazurkiewicz and drummer Krzysztof Szmanda. Percussionist Philip South guests on a couple of tracks. The album present five original pieces co-credited to the participating musicians. The very short total playing time (under half an hour) makes this an EP rather than a full album. Nubiola, who is usually associated with Cuban / Latin Jazz, fits perfectly with the two veteran improvisers, creating an interesting series of spontaneous free pieces, which sound natural. His wonderfully worm saxophone tone is a nice twist, and manages to create just the right kind of interplay with the rhythm section. The music is completely improvised, but has a strict melodic sub context, which makes it easily accessible to a wide range of listeners. It is also quite minimalist and subdued, which creates a delicate, emotional mood. All three musicians play wonderfully, being veterans of the trade, and the intimate setting enables their individual contributions to be heard clearly. Overall this sounds like a friendly experiment, which hopefully will lead to a bona fide full album soon. In the meantime we can enjoy this short foreteller and wait for the next one. http://www.adambaruch.com/reviews_item.asp?item=106401 #AdamBaruch #RecordReviews #MusicCriticism #Jazz #PolishJazz #CubanJazz #ImprovisedMusic https://www.instagram.com/p/CDRcKW3HnXI/?igshid=1uqng2g4evve3

SPITTING IMAGE “Full Sun” reviewed at Maximum Rocknroll / issue #481!
Black wax, limited cream colored, or cassette:
SPITTING IMAGE "Full Sun" LP by SPITTING IMAGE
“Great collection of snaky, noisy post-punk jams from this Reno, NV band. Instrumental opener “Intro” gives a table of contents of sorts with strummed indie guitars that build with shimmering distortion and chiming, atonal layers à la SST-era SONIC YOUTH. This is punk, but it’s been soaking in psych, desert-dirge country, and deathrock, and left in the sun to bake. “Spirit Trouble Flash” builds and releases heavy guitars along syncopated drum beats until the chorus hits, and it really hits. Tracks like “Not This, Not This” and “Devil’s Bloom” pound a menacing bass and drums cadence until serpentine post-everything guitar lines creep in and hover over the sound like dripping icicles. “In Menace Meadow” takes us to the dunes with clean strums and slide guitar twang. Check this out when you’re in the mood for expertly produced dark, knotty punk.”
