“You’re acting like you’ve never seen a person before.” Yoongi chuckles at you. You realize that you were once again lost in your own world, your eyes resting on him. You’re not sure how to feel after his introduction.

“N-no… it’s just been a while you know? Ever since this started…” your voice becomes weak and breaks off. You have completely forgotten how to speak, it feels like nearly a lifetime since you’ve interacted with another being.

“Wait… You’ve been alone this whole time? What did you do hide in one place?” He laughs slightly at the thought.

“No,” you spit back at him in defense, “I just haven’t run into anybody yet...” You shuffle your feet uncomfortably. It’s not like you were avoiding people on purpose. Life would have been so much better with someone to depend on. Suddenly the realization of what he said hits you. “You have someone with you?” Your eyes widen with excitement. Not only did you just meet another person but there might even be more.

Yoongi scratches at the back of his neck and gets lost in his thoughts for a minute as if he is considering what he should tell you. “Yeah. You could say that.” A perplexed look paints your face. What the hell does that mean?

Something rustles somewhere nearby and scares the lights out of you making you clutch at your heart. Yoongi looks startled for a fraction of a second before that aloof look paints his handsome face once again. “If you want you can come with me.” You can feel Yoongi’s eyes on you well before you meet his gaze.

“Huh?”

“I mean if you want to stand here like an idiot that’s fine too.” He turns his back and starts jogging down the stairs. Before you can even process what he said your feet are carrying you after him.

“N-no. I just didn’t think you would want me to come.” You feel yourself blushing and pray that he doesn’t turn and look at your flustered face.

“Don’t flatter yourself. I just think that there is strength in numbers.” Yoongi smirks to himself and you feel your lips scrunch into a pout. Although it kind of hurts your feelings, he isn’t far off from the truth.

“Let’s go.” His voice comes out forceful once you reach the bottom of the stairs and you just nod in response. You follow him back outside. It was somehow even worse outside now than it was when you first arrived. Your eyes begin to water, and you conclude that somehow the air quality tanked. You glance from building to building and you fail to notice that Yoongi has continued on his way. When your gaze finds his back again he is about to turn a corner. You sprint after him hoping that you don’t lose him and get stranded. It’s not that you couldn’t take care of yourself, you just were so sick of being alone, and you’re intrigued by the man you just met.

Once you catch up to Yoongi he turns around to look at you with an amused look on his face. Did he leave you behind on purpose? You’re sure you look ridiculous. You can feel the sweat starting to evaporate from your face, your hair sticking to it. Your face is beet-red, a mixture of exertion and embarrassment, and as you stand there you suddenly realize how strongly you’re panting trying to catch your breath.

“You really should work on your stamina.” Yoongi glances at you sideways with one brow arched. You pull your hands to your face and wipe away the perspiration and shoot daggers at him. He just curls his lips into a small smile before turning his back and continuing. You swear that small gesture made your heart race just as it had finally started to calm down.

The two of you continue on your way through back alleys cluttered with trash and debris. It feels like you have been walking for an hour before you find your way to a slightly less urban area of cookie-cutter houses with fenced in yards that have seen better days. You assume that Yoongi has been staying in one of these houses.

“We’re here.” Yoongi gestures towards the house you’re standing in front of. The grass is a rotten brown and bald in certain areas. The paint on the house is a dinged green but seems rather intact except for on the white door where the paint has begun to peel back and reveal the wood behind it. Yoongi walks up to the door opening it and you trail closely behind. He walks in first but holds the door behind him so you can come in.

“Hyung! You’re back!” A deep voice bounces around the house. At that moment another guy stumbles down the stairs like a puppy. He is taller than Yoongi and darker in complexion. His smile forms into a rectangle and his eyes scrunch up when he sees his friend. His shoulders were wide and his stance nonchalant, that is until he noticed you hiding behind Yoongi. “Whoa? Who is this?” The boy’s eyes widen with a mixture of shock and excitement. “Hyung! You finally found you a lady? Too bad the world had to end first.” The box smile returns to his face as he lets out a laugh.

“It’s not like that.” Yoongi practically spits back at the younger male. He lets out a loud sigh and looks back at you. “This is Taehyung.” Yoongi gestures his hand towards the other person.

“You can call me Tae. And you are?” Taehyung makes his way towards you with ease and gets extremely close. You can tell by his personality he probably doesn’t understand personal space. You look up at him and study his face. He has stark and strong eyebrows peeking through his chestnut hair. His eyes are a dark brown and you notice that he has only one monolid. Something about that makes him seem even more puppy-like.

“I-I’m Y/N.” As soon as you stutter out your name Taehyung slings his arm around your shoulder pulling you close. You feel the heat rush to your cheeks and your eyes glance at Yoongi asking for help. However, Yoongi is too busy glaring at the man with his arm wrapped around you.

“Did you bring anything good back? I’m starving.” Tae uses his other hand to pat his stomach. “Are you hungry?” He looks down at you with a soft smile.

“O-oh. No, I’m fine!” At that moment your stomach betrays you and makes an audible rumble. You purse your lips as you look away and curse in silence. Taehyung chuckles and you can even hear Yoongi laughing a little.

“I didn’t get much, but I did find some ramen in one of the apartments.” Yoongi slings his bag off of his shoulder and digs in it pulling out a few cups of ramen.

“Score!” Taehyung finally removes his arm from your shoulder to throw his arms up into a victorious pose. “I’ll go grab a kettle and some water. Be right back.” Tae takes off turning to shoot you some finger guns right before he disappears into what you assume is the kitchen.

Your eyes find Yoongi’s once again and the intensity of his stare makes your mouth go dry. He just gestures for you to follow him and you do exactly as you’re told. He walks towards the back of the house and opens one of the two doors that leads back outside. You trail behind him until he gestures towards one of the many chairs in front of a small fire pit that is obviously used to cook on.

Your butt finds its way into the chair and your eyes wander the backyard. There is a small table that obviously at one point was on the patio. You assume that Yoongi moved it to put the fire pit in its place. Other than that, the yard is extremely bare and dead.

A hand lands on your shoulder for a split second before sliding back off. The culprit turns out to be Yoongi who must have been concerned. “You okay? You look a little lost.” The corners of his mouth form a frown and his eyes are laced with concern. This is not something you would expect from someone like Yoongi. Although you just met, you can tell Yoongi doesn’t like to express his feelings openly.

“I’m fine. I just have a resting lost face I guess.” You smile trying to eliminate any worry that he would have.

“Whatever you say.” Yoongi walks away and sits in the chair across from you.

Taehyung makes his way outside trying not to stumble with the kettle in his hand. After placing it on the ground he works on lighting the fire. The whole time he works he hums to himself filling the quiet night air. Once the embers light up Tae places the grate over the fire and puts the water on to boil. “Mind if I sit here?” He gestures to the seat closest to you.

“Go for it.” You shoot him a friendly smile and he relaxes into the chair with a soft sigh. You glance across the fire and see Yoongi staring at you once again. His eyes were fixed onto yours. Chills shoot up and down your spine and your skin crawls, but somehow you manage to keep eye contact for a minute before you try to make conversation. “S-So how did you guys meet.”

“We knew each other before any of this happened.” You look back and forth at the two of them with a look of confusion.

“I know it’s hard to believe, but we are actually really close.” Tae lets out a hearty laugh at the look on your face.

“You guys really don’t act like it.” You look back at Yoongi who is leaning back in his chair with his legs crossed laughing to himself. “I’m just saying…” Your voice fades off.

“What about you? Were you alone this whole time?” Taehyungs questions with a look of concern. You nod gently at his question. “Wow… that must have been so scary. I don’t know how you did it.” He gives you a bewildered look as if you didn’t do it because you had to. “I mean I get scared staying here alone while hyung goes out, let alone actually being unaccompanied...” Tae seems to get lost in thought because his gruff voice trails off and blends in with the ambient sounds.

“I guess it was easy because I stayed alone even before all of this happened. I didn’t even have a pet.” You laughed at yourself trying to lighten the mood, but you somehow made it worse. Taehyung’s normally soft expression went solemn. “Oh… I’m sorry I didn’t mean to upset you.” You put your hand on his knee to try and make him feel better. Tae forces a smile and looks at you.

“It’s okay. It just reminded me of who I lost.” Your heart drops into your stomach and as you open your mouth to apologize once again you get cut off. “She was the best thing that ever happened to me… and one day she was just… gone. We went to bed together and I woke up alone.” Taehyung stares up at the sky as if searching for what to say. You can tell that he somehow blames himself. “She was just so perfect. She was small and feisty. She was talented at basically everything she did. And God was she beautiful.” He sighs and smiles at you briefly before looking down at his hands.

“She sounds wonderful. What was her name?” You look at him and wait for him to answer.

“Wonderful doesn’t even do her justice. Her name was Olivia.” As soon as the name left his mouth his eyes filled with heartbreak. You can tell it must be hard for him to talk about this.

“I’m so sorry Taehyung.” You put a hand on his back and rub lightly trying to console him. “It’s not your fault you know... You shouldn’t blame yourself. A lot of people randomly disappeared. You never know she might be safe somewhere else.” Yoongi nods in agreement but Tae shakes his head slightly. After faking a smile, he turns back towards you.

“She would probably beat me up if she saw me all sad like this. She would tell me I need to pull myself together. She’s the reason I’m able to be so strong most of the time. But when I talk about her it just hurts so much…” He trails off thinking to himself.

“The water is ready.” Your eyes shoot towards the kettle which is releasing a steady stream of steam accompanied by a whistle. Yoongi hands everyone a cup ramen and Taehyung pours water in each one. Yoongi sits in the chair on the other side of you much closer than where he was before. As you wait for your noodles to cook you stare at the fire. It feels so nice. It was by no means cold outside but there was something so calming about sitting around a fire. It had a warm and inviting nature.

“Y/N.” The raspy low voice startles you and you turn towards the source. Yoongi eyes are looking you up and down but there is a softness to his stare this time. “You’re going to fall in if you aren’t careful.” He pulls your arm up softly as you look back at the fire and realize that you were subconsciously leaning forward.

“O-oh…” You sit back in your chair and grab your noodles adding the flavouring and stirring it in. You shove a large bite into your mouth smiling around the utensil. Ramen was always one of your guilty pleasures and it had been so long since you had eaten any. Yoongi chuckles behind you and you turn towards him mid-bite. When you do his laugh turns into a full-on smile which sports his teeth and gums. It melts your heart a little bit to see him like that. You make a note that you want to make him smile like that more often.

The three of you continue eating in relative silence aside from the sounds of slurping, masticating, and swallowing. After slurping down the rest of the broth you sit back and rub your stomach feeling almost blissful. Tae lets out a burp and laughs a bit at himself and you giggle as Yoongi groans. “Excuse me.”

You let out a long sigh. “I’m tired,” you try to say through a yawn. “Oh yeah where should I sleep?” You look between the two of them waiting for a reply. You honestly didn’t mind where as long as it wasn’t outside.

“You can sleep with one of us.” Tae smiles at you warmly. Your face warms up and you’re not sure if it’s the fire or the thought of sleeping next to either one of them. “There are only two beds in this house. To be fair we didn’t expect to find anyone else.” You nod at him to let him know that you’re paying attention.

“Or she could sleep on the couch,” Yoongi scoffs. “It wouldn’t kill her.” He leans in closer to the two of you. Your eyes find the ground in hopes to not make eye contact with him.

“Well if Hyung doesn’t want you to sleep with him, you can sleep with me.” Taehyung wraps his arm around your shoulder and pulls you closer. Although you can’t see it, you’re sure he’s doing that cute box smile.

“No.” Yoongi barks out. It comes out harsher than he expected. “She can sleep with me, it’s fine. I don’t trust you to not make a move on her.” Yoongi practically growls at his friend. He tightens his fingers around your wrist as he shoots daggers at the other man. Tae just laughs in response and removes his weighty arm.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about hyung. Either way, it’s up to her. What do you say Y/N? Wanna sleep with me?” You try to look Taehyung in the face but your eyes dart around uncomfortably as you try to think of a proper way to turn him down.

“N-No. I’m really okay. I can sleep on the couch. It’s definitely better than the hard ground.” You chuckle anxiously and twiddle your thumbs.

“No. Tae is right. You really should sleep in a bed for once.” Yoongi’s eyes are on you once again but this time they seem full of kindness instead of anger. “You can sleep in my bed. I’ll sleep on the couch.” This sudden offer has you a little confused. Yoongi gets up abruptly and walks in so that you don’t have a chance to argue.

You follow him inside and up the stairs to his room keeping quiet because you already feel bad enough. He was obviously staying in the master bedroom of the house. You look over to Yoongi and watch him fiddle with the raven coloured hair at the nape of his neck nervously. “Oh… Do you have anything I can change into? I don’t want to get the bed dirty…” You look at him expectantly. Instead of saying anything he just turns towards a drawer and pulls out a large t-shirt.

“Here. This should be good.” He holds the shirt out to you while looking elsewhere.

“Oh. Thanks a lot, Yoongi.” You look at his expression and you swear you see a light shade of pink flush his cheeks. You give him a soft smile as you study him a while longer. Suddenly Yoongi clears his throat.

“Well. I’ll leave you be. If you need anything I’ll be downstairs. Goodnight.” Yoongi turns on the balls of his feet and makes towards the door with haste.

“Wait!” He stops in his tracks and looks over his shoulder at you. You look down at your feet and search for the proper words to say. “I mean.. the bed is so big. It’s not fair for me to take it all.” You stumble over your words and become more flustered. “And I would just fe-”

“Okay.” He cuts you off.

“Huh?” You look up at Yoongi who had made his way back over to you while you were preoccupied with the floor. He was wearing a gentle smile, something that makes him even more attractive to you. Maybe he wasn’t as rough around the edges as he seemed. As you stare up at him you noticed how truly stunning he was. He had a small mole on his cheek that at first glance looked like mud. His eyes were like dark chocolate and his nose was just the cutest thing you had ever seen, it made you want to reach out and boop it. Your eyes glance down to his small pink lips as he begins to speak again.

“I said okay. I mean who wouldn’t want to sleep with me?” His lips curve into a smirk as he looks down at you and you suddenly feel like you could heat the whole house with your face. Your heart is beating out of your chest and you wonder if he could hear it. He chuckles and makes his way over towards the drawer to pull out some sleep clothes for himself. “You can change in the bathroom right there.” You follow his finger towards the bathroom and step inside.

You look around the bathroom and jump when you see your reflection. You really are a mess. Your hair was sticking up in random places and your face looked like a tomato. You pull your hair out of the hair band you had it in and try to comb through it with your fingers. Once you’ve gotten it to semi-cooperate you change into the shirt Yoongi had given you. It was soft and oversized. It came down to your mid-thigh. You pat your face a few times trying to pull yourself together before heading back into the room.

Yoongi was just pulling on his sleep shirt as you walked in. Your eyes wandered up and down the milky, smooth expanse of his back before his shirt cut off your view. Just as soon as you had gotten yourself together you walk out to see this.

You stand there flustered for a minute before turning and making your way towards the bed. Lying there with your back facing where Yoongi was at the moment, you pull the covers up to your neck. Suddenly you feel a dip in the bed behind you and tense up completely. Yoongi squirms close to you, but not close enough to touch you.

After a while, you hear Yoongi groan behind you. “Can you relax? I won’t bite.” His voice was low and rumbled in your ears. You just nod in response, but you completely fail to do as he asked. Every season, homeowners and interior designers are kept on their toes with a shake-up in indoor and outdoor living trends. This season is no different, as patio furniture is shifting from practical to indulgent in both form and aesthetic.

This is largely due to last year’s indoor-outdoor living trend, a concept that encouraged transitional decor pieces that had a place both inside and outside the home. Using this as a foundation, 2018 has created new trends in patio furniture that allow for comfortable outdoor seating and entertainment.

We reached out to interior designers to get their take on emerging trends in patio furniture and how you can incorporate them at home.

Eclectic Materials

Step aside, plastic! This season, patio furniture is mixing organic materials to create a unique style.

Kelley Lauginiger, lifestyle blogger and digital content strategist from furniture and mattress store American Freight, suggested mixing materials, like wood, metal or wicker, for a fashionable and universal look.

“This makes it easy and affordable to update just one piece of furniture without having to overhaul the whole setup,” said Lauginiger

By using multiple materials in your furniture, you don’t have to worry about matching the materials of your patio or accessories you might add for aesthetic; instead, you can seamlessly add or remove different styles that work with the many different elements in your furniture.

Plush Outdoor Seating

The trend of indoor-outdoor living has also sparked a desire to incorporate fully upholstered outdoor seating, like sofas and daybeds.

Deborah Holt, digital marketer from Sunnyland Patio Furniture, suggested using upholstered materials to have both the look and feel of indoor furniture.

“What’s great about fully upholstered furniture is that it has the comfort of indoor furniture with the durability of outdoor furniture,” said Holt.

Make sure to shop for water-resistant materials that can also take a beating from different types of weather conditions. Holt also recommended storing cushions and pillows when not in use, extending the life of your outdoor furniture.

Colorful Cushions

After the announcement of Pantone’s Color of the Year, ultra violet, interior color schemes moved from neutrals to bold colors and complementary patterns. Consequently, outdoor decor is following suit.

Rhianna Miller, trend forecaster and in-house home and garden design expert at Rubber Mulch, suggested looking for nature-inspired palm tree prints, modern floral patterns, Bohemian patterns and globally influenced prints as well as bold, dramatic colors when it comes to choosing your cushions.

The bold colors and patterns will pop against the wood, wicker or metal seating material, making your outdoor seating brighter and more inviting to guests.

Unique Accessories

Another way patio furniture is moving away from a focus on functionality is by adding accessories to outdoor spaces to enhance both the comfort and style of the outdoor experience.

Holt suggested pulling colors and patterns used in the home into the colors of your accessories, like pillows, rugs and accent pieces.

“Adding these additional items not only makes the outdoors feel more homey, it also brightens up the space and gives it more personality,” Holt explained. “The singular flow between the indoor and outdoor rooms make the outdoor room feel more like an extension of the home and not a separate outdoor living space.”

A few pillows, a rug or even some decorative pieces go a long way, so don’t go overboard with the decor. Try adding a few elements at first to avoid cluttering the space.

Fire Pits as Focal Points

Fire pits can do more for your outdoor space than roast marshmallows; it adds a focal point to your seating area or entertainment space, creating a warm and welcoming outdoor experience.

“An outdoor fireplace, chimney or fire pit is a natural gathering spot that brings people together and extends the amount of time that you can be outside,” said Miller. “Whether you go big or small, a fire element will enhance your outdoor experience.”

Create a cozy environment by arranging comfortable seating around the fire pit, perfect for a late-night gathering with friends and family.

Large Dining Tables

Since summer is a time to break out the grill, keep the party going with an dinner table that allows you to share a meal in the great outdoors. Large dining tables are making their debut this season, allowing opportunities to entertain or simply enjoy a meal outdoors.

“Small bistro tables for patio dining are a thing of the past,” Miller asserted. “In 2018, the trend moves to oversized dining tables that fit your entire family or an outdoor dinner party for friends. Big dinners shouldn’t be relegated to the kitchen when the outdoors provides the perfect backdrop.”

If you’re looking to add more entertainment elements, a bar cart is sure to create a great experience for your guests.

Modern Ceiling Fans

If you have a covered patio or deck, Miller recommended adding a ceiling fan to the space, creating another seamless transition from the inside to the outside.

“Not only does a ceiling fan increase the homey aesthetic, it makes the hotter days more bearable,” Miller explained. “If a ceiling fan creates a more livable scenario in August, you’re more apt to utilize your outdoor area more often.”

If you don’t have a covered patio or pergola, try adding a large, colorful umbrella that complements your outdoor decor while also providing a convenient shade for hotter summer days.

A family of four that is comfortable dining in a 5-foot-long dining room will require twice as much space to move the chairs around three feet and safely bypass the table. You must reserve some green space in the backyard to achieve the “communication with nature” felt by the deck, and do not add a deck that is so large that the service becomes stunning.

To get the general idea in a physical sense, you can drag the furniture onto the patio, grill and deck chairs onto the lawn and place them the way you assumed the location on the deck. Layout a deck with a string and stakes or use a garden hose to overcome the perimeter of the proposed deck. Measure the perimeter, and then call the designer or contractor. While doing homework, you will be better prepared to discuss your needs and desires with a professional.

Plan a deck that allows enough space for your actions, as well as convenient routes between them and around them. Often these areas of use will be visible only after the furniture is installed. The far short side was another concrete tile apron that connected to a satellite seating area with a full size table and chairs for four by the “pool hut”- a three-sided slatted wood structure with a large upholstered cabana bed inside and a ceiling fan above. There was a shed attached to the back to conceal the pumps and things for the pool, house the pool cleaning equipment, and store the toys and floats. The pool itself was smaller than their old one too, at about 13m long. The mosaic tiles inside were glass bottle green, and gave the water a sort of natural look. André had to run down the “stepping stone” tiles to get to the deep end so he and Lukas could cannonball in together. Christina didn’t turn from the brand new grill range until she heard the splash. No one drowned.

André surfaced with a wet and giggling child, and then put said child in his donut float so he could “swim”. Swimming for Lukas was kicking his feet around underwater and trying to move the little inflatable tube that kept the rest of him on the surface. André looked around the yard to take in the feel of it. He liked that there was no brick wall to close it in on any side, or even a fence. There was a temporary fence around the pool for the baby’s safety, but it was pulled apart and out of the way for the afternoon. He liked that if he looked through the trees he could see the riding rings on one side, and the paddocks beyond the actual garden at the back. The garden itself was small- some very low hedges, lots of bushes, and some flowers with a distinct path through it to a tiny little pond shaded by trees with low and heavy branches. There were no fish in it, but the landscapers said that wild creatures probably used it from time to time anyway. There were some animals already trying to use Lukas’ playhouse in the yard too. Spencer and Lucky drove some furry mammal out of there one morning when the player had his coffee outside with them. They liked the freedom of the new yard too, and kept disappearing. That made Christina really nervous before she left. André said they were just off exploring the features of their new territory, and reminded her that she hadn’t even done so yet. She still hadn’t seen the garden with the pond, or walked around in the trees, or enjoyed any of the nice open feeling. Easter really was a beautiful spring day, and he hoped she would finally take in just how lush and green and pleasant their new habitat was. In London everything was grass and tall trees except for a couple of flowerbeds and the potted palms and ferns on the patio and deck. Their German property had everything. Greenery sprawled around everywhere in a natural sort of way besides the “formal” garden. The areas on the side of the house and in front were dotted with clusters of different bushes, all sorts of trees, and even some wildflowers. Everything about the layout and landscaping made the property feel more relaxed and aged, or established. There was something a little pretentious about their English estate, or an air of it having once been pretentious but then allowed to relax just a little. The stable never lost its air of aristocracy.

Christina liked that. She was into order and boundaries. André was still trying to figure out if the resistance he perceived from her was about their home specifically or just the concept of it. He couldn’t tell if her lack of enthusiasm or interest in exploring the nooks and crannies, using the whole house instead of just a few rooms, or even acting like the kitchen was her domain, was because she was not yet comfortable and “at home” there or if she just plain didn’t want to be and thus prevented herself from getting better acquainted. Sometimes it seemed like she legitimately didn’t like aspects of the property, and sometimes it was just as if she didn’t want to accept that it was home now and had to act like she didn’t care about anything or like it. Another explanation was that she simply wasn’t there enough to make it her home. That was another reason to be annoyed that the rider was beginning her three-week stint between competitions by jetting off to London again. André watched her stand behind the grill and look at her phone. Another difference from the old house was that her $8000 Viking grill was the freestanding kind, rather than built-in. It sat right on the edge of the patio, far enough from the house that the smoke wouldn’t end up going directly in any of the bedrooms upstairs when the windows were open. It still had plenty of space for cooking, the same burners and rotisserie, and all the technology of the range built in outside the kitchen doors back in the UK.

“Who do you think Mommy is texting with?” the player asked his son. “Is she talking to Tom about the horses in Miami? Or Kyle about the horses next door? I’m surprised she hasn’t gone over to see Dirk yet, actually, and make sure that the new girl didn’t do anything terrible. Or is she talking to Juan about how she can’t wait to see him?”

“Daddy can you push?” Lukas didn’t care whom his mom was talking to. He knew to ask for a push whenever he was lacking impulsion, be it on his tricycle, a swing, or even his stroller.

“Where do you want to go? You want to play with the ball? You better want to play with the ball. It took me 10 minutes to blow it up.” All of the pool toys needed inflating for the season. The fire pit needed breaking in too. André hoped to get to that later. It was one of those things that made him scratch his head, in terms of his wife. She’d been saying for years that she wanted a fire pit. He thought she might want to light it and sit beside it on one of their first nights in the house. He hadn’t even figured out how to light it yet since she had no interest.

Her interest in her phone had nothing to do with her grooms or her ex. She got a Bleacher Report notification about Thibaut Courtois being out of the game against United in a couple of hours. She was checking the story on Twitter, not texting, and wanted to make sure André got his “let’s do family things outside because it’s Easter” thing out of his system in time for kickoff. He didn’t always like to watch his old team, and he didn’t always appreciate how much more excited his wife was for said team’s results compared to his team, especially since his team was her team first. Christina felt entitled to some peace and freedom to watch the crucial game, and also the Bahrain Grand Prix at the same time, because she was 100% sure he would recede into the basement theatre to watch the NBA playoffs later.

She pocketed the device, basted the kebobs with some more of her sauce, and then walked back into the house to get some towels for the boys from the closet way down at the other end, by the round room. It was pretty annoying to have to navigate through so much of the house to get there when the exterior doors were locked. The doors were an 8-second walk from the grill outside. Christina unlocked one and went back outside through there to deliver the towels near the pool and ask the boys if they wanted shaved carrot and broccoli slaw or a regular greens salad. They just wanted her to get in the pool with them.

“I can’t. I have to do the food. I’m about to put the sausage on.”

“So put them on and then get in the water instead of standing at the grill and letting them shoot grease all over my sweatshirt,” André recommended. Lukas was out of his donut and sitting on Dad’s shoulders instead.

“They only take a few minutes, and I have to make the slaw, and cut up your avocado.” What is it about guys that they don’t understand that someone has to actually cook or construct the food they eat at home, and that person can’t just play and then go sit at the table and have food magically appear, ready to be eaten?

“What’s the hurry? The chicken tastes just as good cold. Finish the kebobs and turn it off and come play with us for a while!”

“Nooooo. I’m hungry, and I want to be done cleaning and everything in time for football and Formula 1. And he’s gotta find the eggs you hid.”

“You’re dead to us,” the player proclaimed before suddenly sinking below the surface and taking Lukas with him so that the littlest Schü ended up half submerged too. At least they’re cute when they’re demanding and non-understanding, Christina thought.

She decided to save making cheeseburgers for later since they had plenty to eat with the other stuff, and she managed to coax André and Lukas out of the pool before everything got cold. They ate outside at the glass table and chair set from their patio at the old house- a first at the new one- and talked about the horse show and the bus attack. The rider gave a more in depth account of her second-place finish in the Grand Prix and her team’s fourth-place in the GCL, and the player filled her in on the well-reasoned and explained working theory among authorities and journalists that the attack on his team’s bus was staged by right-wing extremists hoping to frame radical Islamists. That was actually sort of consoling. Neo-Nazis and the like scared Christina a lot less than ISIS, and it sounded like they did such a poor frame job that they might be fairly easy to catch. André wasn’t sure if he preferred to be the target of people willing to use him and his colleagues to set up another group, or the target of indiscriminate terrorists. His wife made the case that it wouldn’t have been indiscriminate, and that it would be a lot scarier if a group like ISIS made a strategic decision to encourage followers to go after sports teams. Those people didn’t care if they died or got caught, she asserted. Right-wing terrorists were less likely to be that self-destructive. They would lay low and not try to do the same thing again, she thought. All that real world was too much for him. He persuaded her to go on a walk with him and Lukas to check out the pond and anything else interesting in the little garden after their late lunch and after she helped their son find the hidden eggs. He had to trade clean up duty, but it was a worthy tradeoff.

“Look. Frog.” The “animal person” of the family crouched down to Lukas-level to show him a green frog with some black spots up ahead, right in the middle of a slate stepping-stone. The slate pieces made a narrow walking path through the shrubbery and trees. The garden was essentially a square with a zigzag route to the pond, which was surrounded on two sides by the densest of the trees and plantings.

“Is it alive?” André questioned. “Do they sunbathe on the stone piece, or did he get stuck there in the sun and die?”

“Babe,” his wife groaned admonishingly. “Of course he’s alive. He’s probably on his way home from the pond. It’s breeding season.” Lukas finally figured out what he was supposed to be looking at, and then made a break for it. The frog hopped away before he could get to it, and totally blew his mind.

“Mommy! Mommy!” He stood on the slate previously occupied by the mysterious creature and pointed in the direction that it escaped into a bush. Mommy went over to console him.

“It’s a frog, Munchkin. Do you remember “frog”? You have some stories about frogs. Remember when I read you the one about the frog that turns into a prince, and I told you Daddy used to be a frog?”

“Hey. I may be able to jump pretty high but I was never a frog,” the resident Prince Charming protested.

“Roggy?” the child asked, surprised. He had his pony with him, and his sweatpants pockets were full of Hot Wheels cars. He was in a new phase with his toys. He knew them all by name, or by what he used as a name for them, and he often wanted to take as many as possible with him wherever he went, instead of just needing Dave the pony, or Dave and Koke the polar bear. His mom let him bring anything he could be responsible for himself, so if he could fit it into his pocket and not drop it and forget it, he could take it with him. If he could put something in his backpack and not give up wearing the backpack, that was fine too. He was learning that the backpack was a little like a smaller, more convenient version of putting all of his things in his wagon and dragging it around with him. “Roggy”, as in “Froggy”, was a hard plastic frog that played learning games with him and sang songs. Christina worried for a moment that he would get upset because he thought of a toy and didn’t have it with him, or that he’d just hopped away and would be gone forever.

“No, a different frog,” she assured him. “A wild frog. He lives out here. Let’s keep walking. I bet we see more frogs. They’re making big frog families right now.” André took his hand to help encourage him to keep moving, and he leaned over him to smooch his girl’s cheek.

I wish there was some person in my life who could convince me everything is fine and I don’t have to worry or be upset, just because she says so, he thought. Mausi gets a couple of words or a certain look from her and he goes back to being trouble free. Actually, I wish SHE had someone who could do that for her. On some things there is just no convincing her. I know Mausi has tantrums sometimes and nothing changes his mind either, but it’s usually because he’s too tired. Even on her best days, in her best moods, she doesn’t have anybody she trusts completely enough to just take their word- not me, not Juan, not her trainers. For Mausi it’s like, “Oh, Mommy says it’s okay so everything is fine. What’s next?”

“It’ll probably be really pretty in here in another month,” Christina remarked. “I’m glad we were able to fit the paddocks back there without having to take this out, or having to fence it in and put it in a paddock.”

“I think it would be funny to go out to get one of the horses and see that he broke in and was standing in the pond.”

“Yeah except for when the pond freezes and the horse tries to walk on it and falls in.”

“It’s only a few feet deep, I think.”

“So in summer it’s just going to be a large mosquito puddle.”

“I liked it better when you said you liked the garden.”

“I like the garden.”

“Good. If it’s nice tomorrow, do you want to go for a walk around the property? Or up the road to see our neighbors’ land?” André inquired with enough hope in his voice that Christina couldn’t possibly decline. She was curious about the neighbors anyway. The first thing on their road was a subdivision of pretty nice, big, new homes for upper middle class families working in the city but wanting the comfort and space of living a short commute away. Then there was the Schürrle property, separated by a fence and a fairly dense tree line. On the other side of their place was actually a riding school. It was nothing fancy, but offered lessons and boarding, and lots of dirt turnout. The world champion who moved in next door had only really seen it via pictures online, and a drive-by when she and André did their initial visit to the neighborhood. Beyond the riding school was a more spaciously laid-out group of modern-ish mansions for the wealthy, including a couple of BVB teammates, and that was the end of the street. The opposite side of their side road was just forest, and according to Google Earth, there was a big grass field beyond that, and then another small neighborhood, and some sort of farm. The whole town was kind of like that- a mix of new and old, suburban and rural, people who moved in a generation ago or earlier, and people just migrating in. Forest separated the hamlet from the nearest major highway to the north, and from a river to the south and east. To the west was a similar town, with a few more businesses.

The closest significant point of reference was the Dortmunder Golfclub, to the northeast and near the junction with that highway. The second most notable thing was a restaurant just two minutes from the house. It was supposed to be cuisine from the Iberian Peninsula. Christina and André alike thought a Dortmund suburb was a strange place for a heavily Mediterranean seafood influenced menu, and for Spanish tapas. They planned to try it out soon though. Apparently Jürgen Klopp went there all the time when he lived in Ahlenburg. The Thai restaurant near the main road to the highway was kind of a surprise too. Another place on André’s list of attractions was an 18th-century hotel with a nice restaurant and miniature golf. That sounded like a nice relaxed weekday date night thing to him. He was encouraged when his girl shrugged agreeably about the walk.

“Yeah, I guess. I’m trying to ride in the early afternoon, when it’s warmest. We could go after.”

“Or you could take one of the horses on the walk. It’s not like there is a lot of traffic on our road. You ride, I push Mausi in the stroller.”

“Maybe,” she shrugged again, her expression thoughtful. “We’d have to lock the dogs inside though. They’d want to follow us, and I don’t want them walking to the gate and then going outside it. I don’t want them to even know it’s possible.”

“Roggy!” Lukas broke free from his parents’ hand-holds and ran after another common frog.

“This is going to be his new favorite thing,” Dad smiled.

“Not for long. They probably only come out in the daytime during their breeding season, which is probably like, a month or something.”

“How do you know? This is like the iguanas in St. Barths. You have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“It’s common sense, just like it’s common sense that you weren’t going to find any iguanas by holding after dinner mints out in your hand by the bushes.”

“Yeah, yeah.”

“Can we walk faster? I need to unpack my laptop and find my iPad or get the other computer so I can have the match, the Sky F1 stream, and the timing app all on different screens.”

“Why don’t you watch down in the basement? You should put the race on the big screen. I bet it looks amazing on there, with the surround sound and everything. We’ll go down with you,” the BVB man offered as they rounded the final turn to the pond. Lukas was already at the edge, bent over to poke a finger into the water. The player cringed because he knew Christina was going to cringe about him touching stagnant pond water full of bugs and frog eggs. “After I wash the pond scum off Mausi.”

“Yeah, you got that right,” she shot back, quickening her step so she could stop the curious little blonde from just walking right into the pond. The prospect of pond scum prevented her from asking him if he was suggesting she watch the race on the TV and the match on her computer because he wanted to sit on the big beanbag with her in the theatre but didn’t want to have to see Chelsea. His club earned a comprehensive and cathartic win at home on Saturday but they were far from being on a good run of form. They were in real trouble in the Champions League and even a tiny slip in the league could put them out of that competition in the coming season. Everything was still great at Chelsea. Juan couldn’t play and even he was still in a pretty great way in terms of football. Having a good chance at a league title could do that. André didn’t have that luxury.

“Is he contaminated? Do we have to cut off the finger?”

“I think he’s going to survive the green slime. I’m holding onto Dave though because if Dave ends up in that water...” Christina trailed off ominously.

“Think of the Halloween party we could have. We could have a swamp monster.”

“Or I could push you in and then you’d be a swamp monster.”

“If you ever try to push me in that water, I will hold your face in it until you inhale frog eggs and get tadpoles hatching in your stomach.”

“Ew. You’re right. You’re not Prince Charming at all.”
