When I started, I told myself that I was going to stay general and not chose specific species of bug but. well. I changed my mind.

(Carolina mantis, Arizona wood cockroach, dog day cicada, virile crayfish, flannel moth, red-legged purseweb spider) Bugs are all found in America and don't correspond to the guys' places of origin, due to the "teleportation accident" premise.
I might have to make a new Soldier design with a more specific fly in mind... I'm thinking maybe a screwworm or greenbottle.

!!! your Spider!Merlin is amazing! Feel like sharing your hcs about Snow's role in the Spiderverse AU too? Do her Red Shoes also make her a superhero of some kind (another Spiderperson perhaps, a la the Red Legged Purseweb or Pink Toed Tarantula?), or would she be a civilian?
I think Snow would be a regular person who gets caught up in the F7s shenanigans! Maybe she's looking for her dad and asks them for help, that's how they would meet.
The F7 are the Avengers of this universe, each one of them being a different type of superhero.
Merlin got bitten by a radioactive spider first, then got the electric upgrade sometime later. He claims he got struck during a thunderstorm but every one thinks he just fell into a pool with eels. Arthur loves teasing him about it
The lightning shaped tear in Merlin's costume was a random damage, he kept it like this bc he thinks it looks cool
At one point Merlin is nearly defeated by a bad guy, but Snow punches them
He asks her if she has been a superhero all this time
Her response is just. gym.

Japanese Mythology
Kamaitachi - Sickle weasel
In their usual depictions, Kamaitachi are weasels with nails as long and sharp as sickles. As described by Negishi Shizumori in the Mimibukuro, their fur is thick and prickly, like that of a hedgehog, they have a bark like a dog, but they fly through the air like a bird. They are carried by the winds in the mountains, and when they pass their nails leave deep cuts in their victims. However, these cuts don’t bleed, nor do they cause pain.

Joro-Gumo - Spider Woman
A horrific fusion of a woman's torso and with the lower body of a spider. Ensnares humans in her sticky threads, then devours them alive. In spite of her giant size, can freely climb walls and ceilings. Her arachnid legs are covered in a thick shell, making them highly resistant to damage.
Tumblr media
Teke Teke - The sound of her walking on her hands
A Japanese urban legend about the ghost of a young woman or schoolgirl who is said to have fallen onto a railway line, where her body was cut in half by a train.
Tumblr media
Gashadokuro - Rattling skull
Skeletal giants which wander around the countryside in the darkest hours of the night. Their teeth chatter and bones rattle with a “gachi gachi” sound, which is this yokai’s namesake.
Tumblr media
Katakirauwa - One eared pig
Katakirauwa is a malicious spirit of a piglet with one ear and red eyes. They have no shadow and most often have black skin. They can steal a person’s soul by running through their legs. To avoid this, you have to cross your legs.
Tumblr media
Aka Manto - Red cloak, red vest
Aka manto is an urban legend related to toilets—particularly those in elementary schools. This phenomenon is known all over Japan, with countless variations on the same theme. It usually takes place in a specific stall in a specific bathroom in the school. Usually it is an older or seldom used bathroom, often in a stall with an older style squat toilet.  Often the fourth stall is the cursed one, as the number four is associated with death.
Tumblr media
Tsuchigumo - Ground spider
The tsuchigumo, known as the purseweb spider in English, can be found all over the Japanese islands and throughout much of the world. Long-lived tsuchigumo can transform into yokai, and grow to a monstrous size, able to catch much larger prey (particularly humans).
Tumblr media
Kekkai - Blood clot
Kekkai are a kind of sankai—childbirth monster—from Saitama, Kanagawa, and Nagano prefectures. They are small and ugly, resembling a monkey. Their hair is said to grow in backwards, and they have two tongues: one red and one white. They are sometimes born from pregnant mothers instead of human babies.
Tumblr media
Oshiroibabā - Face powder hag
Oshiroi babā are ghastly old hags who appear in mountainous areas near the end of the year. They are accompanied by a telltale jara jara sound, as if someone were dragging along a mirror as they hobble through the streets. Their backs are hideously twisted and bent like an old woman’s after a lifetime hard work. They carry a cane in one hand, and a sake bottle in the other, and wear a broken straw hat. Their most defining feature is their wrinkly old face caked with thick, sloppy, white face powder.
Tumblr media
Ittan-Momen - One tan (about 28.8 cm by 10 m) of cotton
Ittan momen is a long, narrow sheet of cloth normally used to make clothes, but reanimated with the spirit of a tsukumogami. They are native to Kagoshima, and can be seen flying through the sky at night, occasionally attacking people.
Tumblr media
Isonade - Beach stroker
Isonade are mysterious shark-like sea monsters which scour the rocky coastlines searching for boats to scuttle and fishermen to snatch. Their bodies are enormous, and their fins are covered with countless tiny metallic barbs, like a grater. They use these to hook their prey, dragging it deep into the water to be eaten. They are said to appear when the north winds blow and the sea currents change.
Tumblr media
Bake-Kujira - Ghost whale
Bakekujira are animated whale skeletons which sail near the surface of the sea, rising as they did in life when they would have had to breathe. They are followed by a host of eerie birds and strange fish. They appear on rainy nights near coastal whaling villages.
Tumblr media
Hyōsube - Written with characters connoting warfare
Hyōsube are squat, hairy humanoids found mostly in the southern and western parts of Japan. They are cousins of kappa and garappa, but much more savage and belligerent. They are short, with bald scalps, sharp claws, and a mouth full of sharp teeth which are prominently visible due to the malicious smile they wear. They are covered with a pelt of thick, greasy hair which gathers dust, oil, and dirt, and constantly sheds wherever they go. Their name is said to come from the “hyo- hyo-” call that they make; however, when written in kanji, the characters used have a martial connotation.
Tumblr media
Kuchisake-Onna - slit-mouthed woman
The spirits of the dead who were killed in particularly violent manners – abused wives, tortured captives, defeated enemies – often do not rest well. One such spirit is kuchisake onna, the ghost of a woman who was mutilated, come back to wreak vengeance on the world. Her name comes from the deep, bloody gash which runs across her face, grinning from ear to ear. She appears at night to lone travelers on the road, covering her grizzly mouth with a cloth mask, a fan, or a handkerchief.

Red-legged Purse-web Spider (Sphodros ruphipes)
Top photo taken by me on 9/26/2012, Silver Springs State Park, River Trail. Bottom photo from https://bugguide.net/node/view/792619
If you are observant enough when hiking down the River Trail here at Silver Springs State Park, you may be lucky enough to spot what appear to be twigs about 12″ long leaning vertically against some tree-trunks.  If you didn’t know what they were, you’d simply walk on by.
But for those of us who do know, it is a chance to show a remarkable “death trap”, set by the fascinating “Red-legged Purseweb Spider”.  This twig is actually a silken tube, spun by the 1.5cm long spider, who is lurking inside. When it senses a careless creature such as a caterpillar, spider, or lizard crawling on the outside of its tube, it feels it’s way up through the inside of the tube until it is directly behind it. Then it bursts through the tube, grabs the unsuspecting victim with very formidable fangs, and drags it inside, where it is consumed.
The male has a black body and vermilion legs, while the female is all black.

Red Legged Purseweb Spider (Sphordos rufipes)
...a species “Atypical Tarantula” (Atypidae) which is native to the southern United States, but has been recorded as far north as Indiana, New Jersey, and even Massachusetts. Like other members of the family Atypidae, S. rufipes will spin a tunnel of silk against the side of a tree (or other hard surface), and wait for a potential prey item to land or climb on the side of the tunnel. S. rufipes will then bite through the silk and pull the prey inside for consumption!
Classification
Animalia-Arthropoda-Arachnida-Araneae-Mygalomorphae-Atypidae-Sphodros-S. rufipes
